Reinert and Mr. Chester W. Rohrbach. These students find the Good Groom- ing Club, band, orchestra, library club and airplane club among their favorite organizations. They were very help- ful in aiding the Red Cross drive and in stamp and bond sales. The seventh grade students can be seen gazing at the upper classmen, wish- ing that they could hold dances and join in activitiesg but these things aren't too far off. They have held parties for special holidays such as Hallowe'en and St. Valentine's Day. Some of the students in the sections of 7-2 and 7-3 have put on plays for the assembly programs. A comedy en- titled Mother Walks Out was pre- sented by the 7-2 section and the 7-3's composed a play from a book they read entitled Ichabod Crane. There are 7-C-Front Row, L to R: W. Swavely, J. These pupils have very decided ideas of what they like and don't likeg on the whole they agree. When these pupils finally become seniors they will remem- ber their first year at B. H. S. as one of their best. The more the merrier they always say, and the old saying surely was true when it comes to the eighth grade of Boyertown Junior High School. In the eighth grade there is a total of 99 pupils, which is a record attendance. There are 59 rural students who make up more than half of the entire eighth grade population. The eighth graders participated in numerous special school activities. Dur- ing the winter there was an inter-mural basketball tournament, in which the 8-2 boys got top honors. The girls were not left out of sports activities either, Eighth Grader and the red team Won the championship of the girls inter-mural basketball tournament. 8-C-Front Row, L to R: G. VVelsh, J. Fleming, Warren O. Fry, and Daniel A. Rohrbach, opened the season with three consecutive wins. In the curtain-raiser an aroused pack of Bears rallied in the last quarter to nose Royersford, 7 to 6. The following Saturday, the locals broke a 7 to 7 halftime deadlock to trounce West Reading, 34 to 7. Next the Norco Wildcats underwent an 18 to 0 trampling. The Boyertown Bears finished the 1949 football campaign on the credit side of the ledger with a record of five wins, four losses. In non-league competition the Bears defeated Spring City, but were outclassed by the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Thanksgiving Day, 1949, saw the Bears, with thirteen seniors finishing their high school football careers, lose a hard-fought ballgame to East Green- ville by a 7 to 6 margin. The Boyertown attempt at the extra point was good but had to be rekicked because of a holding penalty. On the second attempt the ball fell short, strongly reminiscent of the Shill- ington game of 1948. In this department under the capable guidance of Miss Ida Reinert are the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs selected by Miss Reinert and the Junior Choral and Senior Chorus, which are voluntary. To join these clubs the students must be able to sight read well, and to maintain a part. These pupils are given the opportunity to study standard part songs and to present them in an artistic manner. They try to develop good tone quality and enunciation and a feeling for expression. Simple breathing ex- ercises and the singing of the vowels Simfy-f11'n on a given pitch are used to develop a free production of tone. All junior high school pupils have a period each week of vocal music in which they study operas, listen to arias, do sight-reading, and listen to records. An outstanding pupil in the seventh grade is Carol Ann Sweinhart who has an excellent soprano voice. Many of the senior high school stu- dents are taking advantage of this sub- ject as an elective. For an assembly program the Junior Choral did the calendar of holidays. In May the annual Night of Music was held in the high school auditorium, in which these groups participated. Boys Glee Club M. Young Mon with Horns Fill all Seasons with Melody Boyertown High School is very for- tunate to have as head of its instru- mental music department Paul S. Hangen Jr., composer, conductor, cellist, and educator. Under the guidance of Mr. Hangen there is a tenth grade harmony class, a string trio, band, orchestra, dance band, music appreciation class, and instrumental instruction for students from grades four to twelve. The string trio has played for the public several times. The band plays for football games and assembly pro- grams. The orchestra also plays for assembly programs. These two groups presented their annual winter concert in February and paiticipated in the annual Night of Music in May. A newly organized group this year Sixty-four was the music appreciation class, a group of twelfth grade students. The first semester was devoted to the forms: Passocoglia, Basso Ostinato, Variation, Suita, Sonata, Concerto, Symphony, Symphonic Poem and Opera. The second semester was devoted to the lives of composers and styles of com- position, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Wagner, Debussy, Hanson, Villa-Labas, and Shostakovich. Another musical group is the dance band which played for the dances and the gym exhibition. Last October Mr. Hangen was elect- ed by interested players to be conductor of the Pottstown Recreation Orchestra. Sylvia Miller, a member of the junior class, plays second violin in this orchestra. Jazz Band The ever-popular dance band plays at many of the school dances. They were a great hit at the Variety Show. Front Row, L to R: M. Specht, C. Moyer, C. Hartman, J. Gra- ver, G. Bohn, D. When the spring of f'49 arrived the task of rebuilding another track team began. Four lettermen returned and with a group of enthusiastic boys the spring training began under the guid- ance of Coach Francis D. Sell. After several weeks of practice, the Bears first met Lansdale and were de- feated by an overwhelming score. A few days later it became apparent, however, that the team had a future when they finished second in a triangu- lar meet with Muhlenburg and Potts- , Y. We came in second only 315 points behind while Pottstown finished third. As the season progressed the Bears made many fine showings, but the out- standing meets were the Lebanon Relays, the Penn Relays, and the Lan- caster District, 3 Meet. At the Lebanon Relays the B. H. S. thinclads ran away with three trophies and two records. Barrie Fisher, Foster Del Grosso, George Unger, and Russel Miller set a new record of 3:55.13 in the one mile Medley Relay. The same evening Don Beckley, Bill Seasholtz, Barrie Fisher, and Del Grosso also shattered the two-mile relay record in the com- mendable time of 8:-19.7. The team tied for first place in the meet with Susquehanna and Wyomissing with 15 points apiece. The team's greatest triumph was at the Penn Relays when Miller, Seasholtz, Del Grosso, and Fisher won the first mile 1'e- lay trophy since 1934 in that meet.
