rowan public library SALISBURY. NC c £ £j Given in memory of Ella Swicegood In September . . . rowan public library SALISBURY, NC . . . we looked forward to this year at Boyden With mixed emotions. Some of us were glad to see familiar faces. Others longed for summer ' s fun. Seniors thought of coming graduation. Juniors of participation, and Sophomores of feats to conquer. 2 3 4 The reading of English literature with a French brain, Very complicated instructions, An irritating itch on the end of your nose, A penalty which seemed unjustified, A half completed banner, Caused us to be bewildered. 5 Seeing the final seconds of a losing game Tick away, Practicing forever for a big night, Trying to get a superior to see a point, Having the slaw and chili fall off Your hot dog. Not understanding a comment from a friend, Forced frustration upon us. 6 7 Sharing a joke with a close friend, Witnessing the frightening events of a Tense game. Hearing a witty remark during a dull class, Boosting spirit in the stadium, Waiting for tickets to a championship match, Made excitement prevalent in daily life. 8 9 Being the target for water bombs, Waiting for that all-important decision, Striving to sink the basketball, Almost grasping the answer to a question Not knowing the outcome of a big match Discovering the entrance requirements of c Favorite college, Filled our minds with anticipation. 10 11 12 Crowded aisles before an assembly, The unending wait for the last bell, Instructions that never seemed to come. Tense emotions of pre-game practice, Prod uced the maddening feeling Of restlessness. 13 Playing an instrument with frozen fingers, Going the extra mile during football Practice, Giving your all in the physical fitness test, Painting the top of the goal post. Studying long and hard for an exam. Demanded determination. 14 15 Dedication Coach Turney has turned wrestling into the sport at Boyden. After hard and diligent work, our Jackets have become one of the greatest wrestling teams in the state with 63 straight wins. The 1967 Echo Staff proudly dedicates this annual to Mr. Jack Turney and all his wrestlers who made these victories possible. 16 ECHO 1967 BOYDEN HIGH SCHOOL SALISBURY NORTH CAROLINA Volume 47 Table of Contents Theme Introduction 1 Features 86 Activities 18 Classes 100 Academics 50 Directories 160 Athletics 62 Theme Conclusion 177 17 Generating Enthusiasm Booster ' s Club . . . led by Frances Faust ... re¬ flects school spirit . . . sold football and basket¬ ball season tickets . . . sponsored Let ' s Go Week . . . Jackets Rise to New Prominence The 1966 Yellow Jackets started the season with their past record on the wrong side of the ledger, but the coaching of Pete Stout and the leadership of Captain Ron Raper brought the team to the close of the season with a 6 - 2-2 record and an opportunity for the 4A playoff. The campaign opened with a dousing at the hands of Kannapolis. As the team ironed out the wrinkles, they were tied by North Rowan, and built momentum to defeat South. Taking a thorough trouncing from Lexington 38-13, BHS was then ready to return to the victory trail. The campaign resumed at West Forsyth. The Jackets, with a total team effort, had their first real taste of victory 27-7. Quarterback Bill Leonard threw three touchdown passes and ran the other six points himself. The outstanding stats are: West Boyden Forsyth Rushing 217. .113 Passing 122.106 66 The Jackets, finally ex¬ hibiting the talent they possessed, romped to an impressive 13-7 up¬ set over previously un- beaten Greensboro Smith. Highlighting the win was a 44-yard gallop by Steve Furr. Boyden Smith Rushing 192 100 First Downs 10 .7 Unleashing a devastating ground attack, the Jackets continued their onslaught on the Central 4A by overpowering the Bison of High Point 14-7. Proving this statement is the fact that Boyden was never forced to punt. Boyden High Point Rushing 218 123 Passing 31 13 Managers: Dorman McGowan, Bobby Safrit, Scott Hoffman, Fletcher Cauble, John Turner. Trainers: Tim Smith, Scott Carter. 67 Heart-stopping action was prevalent as the Jackets outscrapped the Mustangs of Parkland. Sheer desire and brute strength gave BHS a 21-19 victory in the annual Homecoming affair. The story in numbers: Boyden Parkland Rushing 201.95 Passing 101 44 Truly the height of the season was a trek to Winston-Salem to do battle with the Demons of Reynolds. For the first time in a decade, the possibility of first place loomed near. BHS pulled out a 13-13 tie causing them to continually fight back. The outstanding play -— a blocked punt by Hillard carried over for the TD by guard Steve Corriher. D , D . , Boyden Reynolds Rushing ... 1 68.145 Passing 56 .44 First Downs 12 .6 Desire Pays Off in Number Two Spot Combining a crushing offense and a tenacious defense, the Jackets snatched a playoff bid from North Forsyth with a resounding 19-13 victory. Resulting from the bruising defense were a Viking broken helmet and ankle. Although not experiencing their most successful campaign in recent years, the Boyden cogers proved that they were still a team to be reckoned with. Many suspense-filled contests dotted the schedule as the quintet threw scares into most of the Central powers. Pre-Christmas the Jackets were again in the winning groove. With double victories over North and West the Yellow Jackets exhibited strength at every position. Outstanding wins over Park¬ land, Lexington, Reynolds, and High Point in the Central 4-A tourney were achieved. While not gaining a winning season, the Jackets displayed a respectable brand of basketball. 72 First Row: Horvey Evans, David Grim, Ken Eagle, John Earn- Boutilier, Clarence Harris. ' s blazed to an 18-2 record to end the season with possession of the conference championship. Their victories were fashioned through a ter¬ rific amount of teamwork in¬ stead of individual skill. The B.H.S. fans have a lot to look forward to when the varsity uniforms are turned over to this highly progressive team. The still unbeaten wrestlers of Boy- den marched through their fourth consecutive season undefeated, untied, and unmatched. Highlighting the year was the sixty-first win over arch-rival High Point, 42-3. The Bison had earlier fallen by a slim margin. Notable also was the 55-0 whitewash of Central Davidson. Coach Turney has obviously done a superior job molding a fantastic 63 and with the spirited support of the students, he and his grapplers should easily fashion another. Honors Achieved in Wrestling: Fourth place in state finals-—Ross Rim- mer, Gerald Loflin. Wrestling Coaches: Jack Turney, Charles Little. 78 Golf Losing only one man via graduation, the golfers expect to soar to new zeniths. Returning for another year are Jake Alexander, who brought BHS recognition in the state tournament, Bill Killion, who also participated in the same event two years ago, and a host of other standouts who vision an outstanding season ahead. 1 79 Track 80 BHS ' s cindermen expect to have an outstanding spring with many lettermen returning to action. Among them are Pat Hillard, David Boutilier, and Kyle Black. Coach Stout has high hopes that his boys will represent Boyden to the hilt. 81 Tennis Anxious to better last year ' s great record, the netmen underwent plans to perfect their game. Lead¬ ing the team will be state finalist, David Post. 83 i Baseball Identical to the other spring teams, the baseball squad greets a multitude of players coming back for another sea¬ son of varsity baseball. Ex¬ perience coupled with desire should bring the school an admirable record. 84 Senior Athletes First Row: Dan Kesler, Francis Fogner, James Poe, Bob Brady, Rick Beattie, John Heilig.
