BASKETBALL Boyden High’s spirited Yellow Jackets, under the able guidance of coaches Graham and Pharr, played outstanding basketball and ended the season with a fine 16-7 record. The team finished second in the stiff and rugged Central 4-A Conference and thus gained a berth in the State 4-A Basketball Tournament at Greensboro. Co-captains Fred Cooke and Bill Gribble paced the squad. Both boys were selected to the all conference team for the second straight year. The Jackets opened their season against North Rowan and showed everyone that they were a team to be reckoned with as they romped to an easy 65-47 victory. The team then went on to maul West Rowan twice and North Rowan once again before school was dismissed for the Christmas Holidays. The BHS “Roundballers” were managed by Scott Carter, Johnny Turner, Johnny Simmerson, and Tim Smith. Head varsity basketball coach Don Graham and assistant coach Bobby Pharr guided Jackets to another State Tournament. During this vacation period the team met its match, as it fell twice victim to tough Greensboro Page in non-conference events. After the holidays, however, the team rebounded with two fine victories over West Forsyth and Lexington, but then lost momentum and dropped two successive games to Greensboro Smith and High Point. The Jackets suddenly came alive and dis¬ played their real potential by easily downing five opponents in a row. Throughout this surge the Boyden defense shined as the offense continually burned the cords. The highlight of the season came during this spree with a 87-37 massacre of West Forsyth. Defeat then caught up with the team as they were upset 48-46 by Lexington. The Jackets, knowing that they must finish no lower than second in the conference to capture a State Tournament berth, quickly regrouped and finished the regular season with four crushing victories. 34
