She intro¬ duced idea afte: idea: a theme, action shots in the class sections, an index, a faculty directory, outstanding seniors, etc., etc. Her sincere interest in your year¬ book can be noted by her personal initiative. She was the first to have the Echo professionally criticized. Each summer she attends a yearbook symposium in Chapel Hill. The magazine drive reached a record goal under her leadership this year. It is with great appreciation for her tireless work as advisor that the Echo staff dedicates the 1965-66 Echo to MRS. Hard running backs, great passing, brilliant receiving, stout defense, great desire and a 41-2 romp over North Rowan: these are some of the memories we will all hold for our 1965 football season. Co-captained by tackle Mike Surratt and all¬ purpose back Mike Hillard, the B.H.S. gridders got off to their best start in years. Bouncing back from a 13-6 loss to Kannapolis in the opening game, the Jackets unleashed their fury on North Rowan to grab a 41-2 non-con¬ ference victory. The performance of the Yellow Jackets in that game proved that they were a team to cope with in the General 4-A Con¬ ference. Mike Harrison, a hard runner, scored four touchdowns in the North game in leading the B.H.S. squad to their overwhelming victory. Boyden Football Coaches: Charles Hellard, Ken Bum¬ garner, Mac Brawley, Charles Little, Frank Saunders, Don Graham, Bobby Pharr. f Managers and Trainers: Giles Goodman, Vic Shive, Jimmy Pope, John Turner, Doug Shelton, Steve Cornelison, Robby Gill. The Jackets captured their second victory in the next game against a strong South Rowan. Led by the running of Harrison and the passing of quarterback Fred Cooke to ends Jim Alex¬ ander, Willard Pleasants, and Mike Hillard, they stormed to a 26-13 victory over the Rebels— sweet revenge for their loss the year before. After suffering a setback at the hands of a strong Lexington eleven, the Boydenites bounced back with a gratifying 19-6 win over conference foe West Forsyth. Again Harrison, Hillard, and Cooke led the offense, with Mike Surra tt, John Millspaugh, Jim Kelly, and Daryl Presson shining on defense. Boyden’s Butch Brown bursts around end for long gain against North Rowan. At midseason the Jackets were riding on a comparatively good 3-2 record. Then, after a heart-breaking homecoming loss to Greensboro Smith by a score of 13-12, a plague of injuries hit the team. Early in the High Point game, Mike Harrison was put out of action for the rest of the season when he dislocated his shoulder on a bruising tackle. From then on, it was all bad luck for the Jackets. Despite the offensive efforts of Cooke, Hillard, Alexander, Pleasants, Bub Carlton, and Kyle Black, Boyden was un¬ able to play effective football. The Jackets dropped their last five games in a row, ending the season with a 3-7 record. The disappointing last half of the season was due to the many injuries. Seldom was there a time when all the starters were in good phy¬ sical shape. And, yet, all was not lost. Valu¬ able experience was gained by the sophomores and juniors on the team. With a little bit of luck, and fewer injuries, the B.H.S. gridders for next year can give Coach Bumgarner a winning season. Jackets romp North 41-2 Kyle Black dashes through the line for a good gain before being downed by a host of Reynold’s Demons. 30 A spectacular catch by end Willard Pleasants gives Jackets six against West Forsyth. Fine internal line blocking releases Jacket back for good gain. The team finished second in the stiff and rugged Central 4-A Conference and thus gained a berth in the State 4-A Basketball Tournament at Greensboro. Co-captains Fred Cooke and Bill Gribble paced the squad. Both boys were selected to the all conference team for the second straight year. The Jackets opened their season against North Rowan and showed everyone that they were a team to be reckoned with as they romped to an easy 65-47 victory. The team then went on to maul West Rowan twice and North Rowan once again before school was dismissed for the Christmas Holidays. The BHS “Roundballers” were managed by Scott Carter, Johnny Turner, Johnny Simmerson, and Tim Smith. Head varsity basketball coach Don Graham and assistant coach Bobby Pharr guided Jackets to another State Tournament. During this vacation period the team met its match, as it fell twice victim to tough Greensboro Page in non-conference events. After the holidays, however, the team rebounded with two fine victories over West Forsyth and Lexington, but then lost momentum and dropped two successive games to Greensboro Smith and High Point. The Jackets suddenly came alive and dis¬ played their real potential by easily downing five opponents in a row. Throughout this surge the Boyden defense shined as the offense continually burned the cords. The highlight of the season came during this spree with a 87-37 massacre of West Forsyth. Defeat then caught up with the team as they were upset 48-46 by Lexington. The Jackets, knowing that they must finish no lower than second in the conference to capture a State Tournament berth, quickly regrouped and finished the regular season with four crushing victories. 34 The Jackets then journeyed to the conference tournament and gained revenge on Lexington before being eliminated by Burlington in a close 65-58 contest. The team then traveled to face Myers Park, the Southern 4-A champs. The Jackets lost to Myers Park by a score of 68-55, but the squad never gave up. Perhaps this never-give-up attitude was the key to the fine triumphs and successes of our team. Each and every Boydenite can be proud of our 1965-66 Basketball team. The Jackets playmaker, Scott Brittain, drives around defender toward the basket. Guard Shelby Bassinger picks his way through the defense and lays it in for two points. Led by undefeated Captains Brown, Reynolds, and Rufty, the grapplers blazed through the regular season with a perfect 15-0 record, lengthening their three-year win streak to forty- six straight matches. After posting two non-conference wins over East Rowan and Goldsboro, the Jackets began Proud coaches Turney and Little watch a match. their conference string with a 31-12 victory over highly regarded North Forsyth. After consecutive victories over Lexington and West Forsyth, the Jackets faced their toughest test of the year - unbeaten Greensboro Smith. Performing beauti¬ fully before a home crowd of 800, Coach Turney’s crew coasted to a 32-13 victory and gained sole possession of first in the conference. High Point and Parkland were next to fall prey to the stinging Yellow Jackets. Then they faced tough Reynolds High in Winston-Salem. Down by the score of 21-12 with five matches to go, the Jackets rode the shoulders of their middle and heavy weights to a 28-21 victory. Then they rolled over North Forsyth and West Forsyth before again facing Greensboro Smith. Without the services of Bruce Rufty, who was unable to wrestle most of the season, the Jackets found themselves down 24-20 going into the heavyweight match. But Big Mark Hart, a 260- pound muscleman, came through with a pin to give the Jackets a 25-24 decision and preserve the winning streak and conference lead. Closing out the season with victories over High Point and Parkland by 40-10 and 43-6, the Jackets entered the Central Sectional Tournament in Winston-Salem with high hopes. Due to the individual success of nine wrestlers, the Boyden team won the meet out of a field of sixteen teams. Four Boydenites were District champions in their respective weight classes: Boyce Stevens (95), Bruce Rufty (112), David Troxler (138), and Butch Brown (165). Rick Reynolds (145) and John Kesler (197) were runners-up, and Gerald Loftin (120), Bub Carlton (133), and Mark Hart (unlimited) placed third. 38 Captains Reynolds and Brown. First Row: Don Clement, 127; Boyce Stevens, 103. Middle Row: Benny Hopper, 133; David Troxler, 145; Gerald Loftin, 120; Jack Hinson, 112; Charlie Leonard, 95. Back Row: Bub Carlton, 138; Rick Reynolds, 154; Butch Brown, 165; Rick Beattie, 180; Mark Hart, unlimited; John Kesler, 197. Outstanding Wrestlers: First Row: Bruce Rufty, 112, and Boyce Stevens, 95. Other: David Troxler, 138; Gerald Loftin, 120; Rick Reynolds, 145; Mark Hart, uni; Bub Carlton, 133; John Kesler, 197; and Butch Brown, 165. Rufty, Stevens, Troxler, and Brown hold individual championship trophies, while Reynolds and Carlton hold District and Conference team trophies. Three of these boys went on to do well in the state wrestling tournament held here at Boyden. Rick Reynolds placed 2nd in the state, and Butch Brown and Mark Hart each placed third. This was certainly a great year for the Boyden wrestling team. The success of the team was largely due to six seniors - Bruce Rufty, Bub Carlton, Dave Troxler, Rick Reynolds, Butch Brown, and Mark Hart - who together won 77 matches while losing only 5. But Coaches Turney and Little expect to have a good team back for next year. Juniors Boyce Stevens, Gerald Loftin, Don Clement, Vann Saleeby, Rick Beattie, Benny Hopper, Denny Bennent, and John Kesler all wrestled on the varsity. Jack Hinson, a sophomore, and Charlie Leonard, a freshman, also lettered this year, and can be expected to do a good job in years to come. Wrestling has certainly become the most successful sport at B.H.S., and Coaches Turney and Little hope the Boyden wrestling team will remain one of the powers in North Carolina high school wrestling in the future. 40 V GOLF GOLF TEAM First Row: David Grim, Mike McAdams, Bill Killion, Rick Reynolds, Norman Goodman. Second Row: Bob Selby, Steve Kirchin, Don Selby, Don Clement, Jake Alexander, Denny Bennent. Third Row: Giles Goodman, Eddie Kennedy, Terry Blyth, Fred Cristman, Mike Faggart, Jim Heilig, James Poe, and Coach Don Graham. Coach Graham’s golfers had a fine season this year, highlighted by the play of the under¬ classmen members of the team. Of the six lettermen returning, only one, Rick Reynolds, was a senior. Bill Killion, Mike McAdams, Norman Goodman, David Grim, and Steve Kirchin, all lettermen and all under¬ classmen, were dedicated linksters and greatly helped the team. The team played in seven matches, one being here at the Salisbury Country Club on March 31. Bill Killion, who finished fourth in the conference last year, is considered by Coach Graham to be one of the best high school golfers in the state, and his competition in numerous tournaments prepare him for a fine career as a B.H.S. golfer. The golf team, with only one senior out of eighteen participants, should provide some excellent competition in the Central 4-A Con¬ ference in the future. Golf Schedule - 1966 March 24 at R.J. Coaches Bumgarner and Little, hopeful of a great track season. 42 Mike Harrison, last year’s most outstanding cinderman, exhibits “Greek” form in the discus throw. Bolstered by seniors Harrison, Hillard, and Julian, the cindermen are considered a threat in the Central 4-A Conference. Harrison, named the most outstanding trackster last year, is a terrific sprinter. Hillard is an outstanding sprinter and highjumper. Julian won the conference in the mile last year, and he hopes to set a new Central 4-A record in that event. Behind these three seniors, the track team should have an excellent season. Mike Fuller springs off to an excellent broad jump. 43 BASEBALL V.arsity Baseball coach Jack Turney and Junior Varsity coach Charles Hellard, looked for winning seasons from their hustling Yellow Jackets. The Varsity, with five lettermen returning and with a veteran infield, hoped to better their last season’s record. The team, sporting good hitters and fine defensive play, expected to finish high in the conference standings. The tennis team this year was basically young and inexperienced. With only five letter- men returning and with only four seniors on the squad, the Jackets had to mature quickly. The valuable experience gained by the underclass¬ men this year should make the team a strong conference competitor in the future. David Post smashes a hard serve over the net. Intramurals give the students of Boyden an opportunity to play and to compete in various sports without having to participate in varsity athletics. The boys take part in football, basket¬ ball, ping pong, and softball while the girls enjoy soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and archery. Intramurals are a valuable part of school life because they help the students become well-rounded individuals. 47 Sarah Smith, chief; Pat Phillips, assistant chief; Wayne Caraturo, Gail Eagle, Marcia Mattox, Susan Parks, Sharon Spires. Organized for only two years, the Junior Varsity cheerleaders have become an integral part of B.H.S. spirit. By performing duties for the Junior Varsity teams similar to those of the Varsity Cheerleaders, these freshmen and sophomores greatly aroused the spirit which had been absent at many of the J.V. contests in the past. After practicing for three weeks in the summer, the J.V. Cheerleaders are prepared to lead the cheers at all We rode in the Homecoming Parade. the J.V. games. In addition, they perform other spirit-raising functions, such as making posters and giving out “Support Your Team” ribbons. They also make cookies for the players to eat after the games. The J.V. Cheerleaders have certainly added much to the spirit as well as the athletic program of Boyden. Through the experience they gained cheering this year, they will inevitably strengthen the entire cheerleading program. Junior Civitan, one of Boyden’s major service clubs, has contributed a lot to the school and community this year. They have sponsored such pro¬ jects as: car caravans to football games; Pep night; made welcome sign for stadium and goal post banner; printed basketball schedules; members participated in morning devotions; painted Coburn Memorial Methodist Church scout hut; sold popcorn and programs during Christmas parade. Though competition is high among Boyden’s service clubs, the Junior Civitan’s goal was not to just win an award, but to be of service to the faculty and students of Boyden and the citizens of Salisbury. 54 First Row: Treasurer, Steve Fuller; Corresponding Sec¬ retary, Katharine Murphy; Vice President, Linda Earp; Secretary, Jennie Goodman, President, Chuck Hoover. Disregarding finances, the Yellow Jacket staff proved itself successful. Gene Caraturo, photographer; Susan Dedmon, art editor. Chuck Hoover, assistant sports editor; David Post, sports editor. Our Exchange Student From Holland This is the family I adopted; Mother Nash, Father Nash, and Sister Lona. American teenagers are not as bad as some people think, to me they are just wonderful! I like that the teen¬ agers come so often together in club- meetings, hayrides, slumber-parties, or just after school at the drugstore. In this way it is possible to make many friends. Something that was new to me and what I enjoyed very much were the football games and especially the pep rallies were fun! Typical American things like bermudas, hamburgers and hotdogs seem to have become so much a part of me, and Dm thinking about introducing these in my country! Yu’all were so kind to me and so willing to help me with everything. This made this year wonderful and unforgettable to me. T , . r . . Traditionally, the senior class has elected from among its ranks a group called superlatives. They are given credit for being “The Best Looking”, “The Wittiest”, and the like. Because the ECHO staff feels that a well rounded image of Boyden’s graduating class is not depicted by such a group, the staff has made an addition to the yearbook. First, the seniors themselves elected a boy and girl most exemplary of the qualities of leadership, scholarship, and school pride. The departments were then asked to select on the basis of grades, the students most capable in each phase of the curriculum. These outstanding seniors are pictured throughout the senior class section. The superlatives are featured in the senior directory in activities that warrant their recognition. Graduation Day ... The long journey is over. Boy, these four years flew by fast. I’ll never forget them, the greatest years of my life. 185 -A- MR. AUBREY L. ATKINSON, JR. University of South Carolina, A.B.. B.S.
