It is these things and many more that they will cherish in their memory a few years from now. Underclassmen, too, have had much to remember about this year. Through this yearbook the 1962 Echo staff will try to present an accurate description of some of these memories of our school life. Varsity Club V X c ' ira S ] rU J ' IF Wm By monitoring in the cafeteria, work¬ ing at the concession stand during bas¬ ketball season, and helping the athletic department whenever possible, this club was a great benefit to good ole Boyden. The G. A. A. is an association for girls to promote an interest in athletics. Most of the girls in the club have a letter or are working for one. By participating in intramurals, they acquire points. One hundred points are needed to earn a letter. G. A. A. The club this year was very big, but not a single girl neglected to do her part in their projects. They worked hard and made this year a very successful one for their club. Boyden opened the 1961 season at home by facing a determined Kannapolis High School football team. In a hard fought game the Jackets played the Little Wonders to a 0-0 tie. Sparked by David Wood ' s spectacular 80 or 90 yard run, the Jackets scored their first victory of the season over Lexington High School 7-0. After a series of defeats to Myers Park, Charlotte Garringer, R. J. Reynolds, and High Point, the Jack¬ ets played well the rest of the season. In the last four games they defeated Winston-Salem Gray, lost to Greensboro, tied a favored Burlington team, and ended the season with a sensational one-point victory over Greensboro Page. 150 Varsity Football 1961-62 COY HUMPHREY Front Row, Left to Right: Cal Butler, Don Weinhold, Johnny Spencer. After their first loss to Myers Park, the Jackets bounced back and closed the pre-Christmas season with two wins. COACH JACK TURNEY COACH LUKE LIVINGSTON Boyden ' s baseball chances look good before the start of the season under Coach Jack T urney. After a week filled with hard work and exuberant spirits, the 1961 Boyden High School Homecoming was underway as the parade began at 3:00 Friday afternoon. The sophomore float—Stomp the Whirlies —was victorious. Our team did a great job and we were certainly proud of them. During the halftime performance our new queen, Mary Frances Carrigan, was crowned by last year ' s queen Sara Lou Thomas. Queen M. F. and king Butch Martin, along with her court, were honored at the Homecoming Dance sponsored by the cheerlead¬ ers. As the clock struck 1:00 and Donnie Thompson ' s Combo hit the last note of Shout, the magic night was over—only to be held in our memories forever. 169 Boyden was quite proud of Bill Busby this year for winning one of the coveted John Motley Morehead Scholarships, which will give him an expense paid education at the University of North Carolina for the next four years. We would like also to congratulate three other outstanding Boyden boys who won scholarships after the annual went to press: Ike Brisson, who won a National Merit Scholarship and will go to North Carolina State College; Bill Hight, who won an Angier B.
