Knowing little, lacking nothing, wanting but the best We sought to learn our lessons and be better than the rest. Passing on to the Sophomore class, we continued to climb the ladder Thinking of the day when we'd be seniors, not knowing we'd be sadder. Enjoying ourselves while we were young and wishing to be older. Adding friends and honor and courage to each and every shoulder. Accepting a more prominent place in the school and receiving higher praise, Working hard and winning hcmors and gaining with the days, Learning through lessons and socml experience, we came to know many things, Finding ourselves and learning the lessons that living and loving brings. Finding ourselves at the end of the road, a sob escapes unseen, Throbbing in our hearts are memories poignant and keen. Thanking our teachers, parents, and friends for their help throughout the years We bid farewell to Boyden with a million thanks and tears. Standing here at the open portal facing a beckoning life, Praying for love and brotherhood, hating pain and strife, Looking toward the future, bright with hopes of the morrow We the Class of '50, leave our school with pangs of sorrow. -BONNIE MCRAE Ez., vs f x if l O g' x fe 'L sr-B if SENIOR CLASS CCNFIFICCIERS First Row, left to right: Sylvia Siebert, Secretaryg Mrs. Minnie Gaston, Adviser. MASCCUT iiiii '00 1 P IISTURY As we, the Class of 1950, reach the climax of our high school days, we turn our faces to many heartening memories which are the links between the beginning and the closing chapters of our lives in Boyden. On a bright September morning in the year of 1946, we, the members of the class of '50, entered Boyden as freshmen. After being properly initiated, we quickly became well acquainted with the school, teachers, and upperclassmen. Our scholastic ability was soon recognized as a large number of the class were on the honor roll for the first quarter.. As our class leaders, we selected Jim Justice, president: Margaret Peeler, vice-president, Mary Coleman, secretaryg and Jerry Kincaid, treasurer. For our class meetings, different home- rooms had programs, these gave us a variety consisting of speakers, plays, and movies. Although we did not give much thought to the speakers then, we realize now that their messages have helped guide us through our high school career. As dignified sophomores we quickly adjusted ourselves by participating in more activi- ties and becoming more sociable. This year we selected as our class leaders Jerry Barger, president, John Buford, vice-president, Margretta Thompson, secretary, and Don Godwin, treasurer. To improve our recreation program, a concrete playing area was constructed behind the shop. This made it possible for us to enter into more intramural sports. Also, this year saw two outstanding students, Linda Thompson and James Coggin, make a new school seal. The school motto, Always Faithful, was changed to To Succeed as Citizens. As juniors we welfcognized to be one of the outstanding classes in Boyden. Carl King was elected to lead our class, other officers were John Rendleman, vice-presidentg Linda Thompson, secretary tlater moved out of town? was replaced by Billie Parkerg and Don Godwin, treasurer. Our first objective this year was the magazine drive, which was sponsored to help pay for the annual. We were very proud of ourselves, as we outsold the seniors in subscriptions. In January of that year many juniors participated in the annual Colle Day which was sponsored by the seniors. As juniors, it was our duty to be hosts at' ,Junior-Senior Prom. We looked forward to that night. The gym was beautifully rated, the theme being the Cinderella Ball. The lights were dim as every- one danced to the sweet music of a local band. It was a big moment in our high school career and we will always remember it. As the school year drew to a close, Carl King was chosen president of the Student Association for 1949-1950. Other officers were Bill Greene, first vice-president: Bunny Link, second vice-president, Mary Coleman, secretary, Bob Foil, treasurer. Peggy Brady and Bill Greene were elected co-chief marshals with Bonnie McRae being selected as editor-in-chief of the Yellow Jacket. When school opened in the fall of 1949, the juniors had become seniors. We were in our last year, the year that every student looks forward to. We elected Bob Gardner, president: Murray Burke, vice-president, Sylvia Siebert, secretary, and Jimmy Justice. treasurer. We had traveled a long, hard road, had faced many problems, had overcome difficulties and were recognized as a most outstanding rising senior class. During this year we have lived up to our reputation. We have been outstanding in the Key Club, Hi-Y, Letterman's Club, Y-Teen, Student Council, National Honor Society, and many other organizations. Perhaps one of the biggest events for us was the dedication of our new stadium and athletic fleld-something everyone has looked forward to. Also recognition of the success of football and basketball teams brought honor to us, to our flne coaches, and to Boyden. The Sociology Council, composed of seniors, is to be con- gratulated on its many projects, undertaken and faithfully executed. These included deliv- ering Thanksgiving baskets to the needy families of Salisbury and sponsoring Career Day to help us choose our vocations. And now after four years in Boyden High School, we, the Seniors of 1950, must take our diplomas and travel toward our goal, to become leaders in the world of tomorrow. Some of us will go to college, many will go directly into the business world. All will face life and the problems it brings. Now for the entire Senior Class of 1950, I bid you, one and all, an affectionate farewell. BOB FOIL, Historian I L zz ' STATISTICS After being delegated Statistician of the greatest Senior Class of Boyden High School, I secured the facts and figures and began working toward a conclusion. Equipped with statistic sheets and one adding machine I, Carl King, after much deliberation, present these astounding facts concerning the Class of 1950. From the 19,445 pounds of graduating seniors I found the average female tipped the scales at 122 pounds, the average male weighed 153 pounds. Dell Ketchie and Wayne Leazer raised the boys' average considerably by boasting a cool 200. The weight of the class is due mainly to their favorite foods, which are steak and french-fries, with chocolate milk, their favorite beverage. Sara Hubbard prefers wild onions and corn-bread. If everyone told the truth, most of the class of '50 is 18 years old and sees the world through brown eyes. Dick Arey says his are bloodshot. In addition to the majority having brown eyes, brown hair is prevalent. It is not too popular, however, because about 3070 of the hair around Boyden changes with the seasons-yellow in the summer, streaked in the fall, and natural again about the turn of the year. Dave Shuler says he will be bald before he graduates. The average height is only 5'5 but do not blame Dub Kluttz and Patty Vogler for that because Jerry Kincaid wasn't in school when the statistics were compiled. Bill Bibb and Tommy Johnson surely are cut out to be policemen, they wear shoes size 12 and 13 respectively. The class can thank Jane Beard's size 4 for bringing the aver- age down to 795. ' 4 The graduating class chose as its song of the year I Can Dream, Can't I and Frankie Laine their favorite vocalist. Vaughn Monroe's band was first choice. The Dreamers were also quite popular. After having a heart-to-heart talk with Love Bug, I obtained the following information. Seventy-three seniors have definitely been bitten. Several seem to have infected bites. Thirteen do not know whether they are in love or not, and fifty-five give a definitely negative answer. About 8472: of the class plans to get married. The others have not decided about the fatal step. When married, the majority of the class plans to settle in other towns. This great Senior Class is filled with very modest scholars. Bill Gaskey and Rogers Staley do not want to use up what little knowledge they have acquired before being gradu- ated. The boys prefer gym and mathg that is excluding John Buford, whose favorite subject is Billie Parker. The girls prefer sociology. Eighty-four students plan to further their education by attending inwtions of higher learning. Forty-three do not plan to go to collegeg 14 are still undecided. ' ' Mrs. Minnie Gaston was crowned teacher of the year, but Miss Elizabeth Jones and Mrs. Addie Morris were very close contenders. We all love those dear hearts and gentle people. The beach is the favorite vacationing spotg quite a few seniors, however, prefer the mountains. The most popular place for dates is the movies and then to Mooney's. It is an estab- lished fact that if any one wants to find a member of the Senior Class after 9:30 on Saturday night he should look either at the Club or Mooney's. Dating is first on the list of pastimesg eating between meals is second. Shooting pool ranked high as Jerry Kirk's favorite pastime. The class of '50 couldn't decide on its favorite movieg Hamlet , Johnnie Belinda , and Prince of Foxes were all favorites. Shan Thornton refuses to go to the show unless Buggs Bunny is on. Sports from golf to chess were listed as favorites. Football led the list while basketball and baseball followed. I must congratulate the teams and coaches for our excellent record in athletics this year. The Senior Class chose to ride around in a new Pontiac with a radio tuned to Red Skelton, as the favorite radio program. Gerald Adams insists that his Ford is the best yet. In the comic section the Seniors immediately turn to Dick Tracy or Denny Dimwitt. Jerry Rufty insists that his favorite is Donald Duck. The saying, You don't know, do you? and that's not good fella were acclaimed the most popular expressions. We have hidden talent in the field of musicg Cliff Owen claims he can play anything with a comb and paper, Henry Grogan can really make a tune on his moonshine jug. If that's music, then the whole class is musical. Don Godwin insists that he is the most musical, he can masterfully play the radio! With the established fact that we all have enjoyed our time spent in fun and work here at Boyden, I affix my signature to the statistics of one of the greatest classes ever to graduate from Boyden High School, the Class of 1950. CARL KING, Statistician THE LAST WILL and TIESTAMIENT We, the members of the Boyden High School Class of 1950, being of sound minds, strong bodies, and weak consciences, wish to bestow our undying qualities of honesty, dignity, and intelligence upon our most deserving underclassmen, in full view of the fact that it will be impossible for them to achieve greater success than did the Class of 1950. Realizing that we have come to the end of our high school career and that we have acquired an unusual amount of knowledge, we, the Class of 1950, must leave to the underclassmen some of these superior traits in order that they may be able to uphold the standards set by this and preceding graduating classes. Therefore, we do make this, our LAST WILL ANTD TESTAMENT. FIRST: To our parents who have loved us, cared for us, and guided us in our prepara- tions for our life's work, we give our deepest love and dearest thoughts. SECOND: To Mr. J. H. Knox, our superintendent, to Mr. J. H. Nettles, our principal, and to members of the faculty, we leave our lasting gratitude and sincere appreciation for all that they have done to make our high school career a happy one. More and more responsibility will be placed upon you. Grow so that you will be able to meet your obligations to the school. TWENTY-FOURTH: To the juniors: You have only one more year at Boyden. It is up to you to take the initiative in all undertakings of the school. Merely pattern your lives by the examples set by the class of SO and you will be your best. b In conclusion: As the time draws near for us to depart from this beloved institution, we look back over the fruitful years, we, the class of 50 , have had in Boyden. Now that we have well established ourselves as the best class in the history of Boyden High School, I do affix my signature to this, our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. Paornncr x As the streamlined bus of the Don Creason bus line entered the north boundary of the City of Salisbury on this hot June lst in 1970, I turned to my traveling companion, Clyde Taylor, the well-known New York multimillionaire, and commented on how much the home town had grown since we left it back in 1950. I gazed out the window at the scenery flashing by and thought happily about the pleasant time I was going to have on this vacation. Soon, we had crossed the Yadkin River and were approaching the main business sec- tion. It seemed that Salisbury had swallowed up all the surrounding countryside, but at one place we saw politician Bob Morgan on a soapbox, demanding that the north ward be renamed Yadkin. On both sides of the road there were many signs bearing familiar- sounding names. Honest John Buford's Used Car Lot-We Specialize in 1927 Chevrolet Parts especially attracted my attention. Futher along there was one that read, Andrews' Fine Fertilizer Corporation, Frankie Lowe Andrews, President. Far to the right we spot- ted the 500-foot tower of WHAM, Keith Furr's 50,000-watt A.M., F.M., and T.V. station. Then the bus pulled into the ultra-modern terminal, which I was told was designed by Ed Chambers, architect, and erected by the Delmar Ketchie Construction Company. At the nearest newsstand, we were able to buy copies of Today in Sports, edited and published by Murray Burke and Doug Young. The front page picture was of Robert Brink- ley and Don Dedmon, who were playing pro basketball for St. Louis in the Dixie League and had been voted the most valuable pair of forwards in the lea.gue's history. Another story that caught my eye was the one saying that Jerry Barger and Jerry Kincaid had signed 5-year contracts to serve as backfield and line coaches, respectively, at Notre Dame. Still another story told of Kathleen Thomas's winning the Women's Open Golf Champion- ship. Then Clyde left me because he said he had to go to Catawba University to see the baseball team, coached by Travis Stokes, play its last game of the year. Milling about in the bus station were several folks I recognized. Bonnie McRae was back home on her second furlough after spending 15 years as a medical missionary in Africa. Nearby were Marion Sowers and Dolores Fleming who had just come back from their third trip around the world together. There were lots of celebrities from New York: Marcia Zachary, co-starring with Fred Astaire, Jr., in Broadway's biggest hit in 50 years: Bill Bibb of television comedy fame, and Sylvia Siebert and Mott Honeycutt, famous models. Needing some air, I went out on the sidewalk. Just then a big Cadillac pulled up to the curb and Shan Thornton offered me a ride. She had inherited the Thornton Dis- tributing Company and was making quite a bit of money. She confided in me that this was because of the large amount of business her former classmates were giving her. At the square we ran through a red light, but policewomen, Doris Anne Cooke and Betsy Brown, let us off easy when they recognized us. Halfway down the block, we saw a riot. It turned out to be just a fistfight between Delma Austin, managewsf Kress's, and David Cassady, manager of Woolworth's. ' After that, I just walked around to see what I could see. First I stopped in at the A 8a P and visited with the co-owners, Arch Kennedy and Jimmy Stout. Shopping in the store were several lovely housewives: Martha Simpson, Doris Trexler, Betty Van Poole, and Betty Trexler. At the City Motor Company Heywood Miller was washing a brand new Ford. He owned the place but his help was out on strike, he explained. Down at the Second National Bank, L. J. Eller was presiding over a meeting of the Board of Direc- tors which included Johnny Gobble, Bill Gaskey, Carroll Rabon, Rogers Staley, Alton Merritt, Paul Kiger, and Norman Kluttz. I saw Patty Vogler and Sara Hubbard standing nearby. They said they were waiting for a ride to Monroe, where they were going to be flower girls in a wedding. Suddenly, I heard a terrible roar nearby. Upon investigating behind a nearby wall, I found Adrian Smith, Henry Grogan, and Dick Arey, each testing a streamlined passenger car designed by Cliff Owen. Bill Mabry was standing by to check the engines after the tests. Then, Don Godwin passed on his way home after a hard day selling lightning rods. A little behind him was Jim Whitler who worked even harder charging the rods with a little machine invented by George Yarbrough. By this time I figured I'd better pick up my baggage and check in at Earl Holt's new hotel. Up in my room, I turned on my radio and heard Joyce Mills announce that Jimmie Peacock, Dick Owens, Becky Julian, Grace Burkett, and Betty Bell would be featured in the opera which was to follow. I switched the radio off and went to supper at Eugene Cauble's downtown cafe. That night I went to the commencement exercises at my old alma mater. Mayor Bob Gardner of Salisbury introduced the speaker, U. S. Secretary of State, Carl King. Offstage, I noticed Secret Service Agent, Charles Whitman, who was accompanying Carl. After the speech, Don Potts, Boyden's principal, gave out the diplomas. I noticed many a tear in the eyes of women from the Class of '50 as they watched. Elaine Elium, Hazel Leazer, Peggy Ballard, Nellie Sink, Jo Alsobrooks, Nellie Cauble, Barbara Mills, Betsy Murphy, and Anne Ross Boyd all had children in the Class of '70, In one section of the auditorium, I spotted several Boyden teachers I knew. There were Page Lyerly, coach: Ronnie Beaver, band director: Margretta Thompson, physical education coordinator: Betty Lee Lesley, piano teacherg and Jo Ann Cothran, art teacher. On Saturday afternoon while strolling through the park, I saw Olin Miller and his 3' eleven boys Cthree sets of triplets and one pair of twinsl practicing football. Nearby, Bob Ritchie was watching jealously. He had hoped to do the same thing, but instead he had been blessed with seven girls who were learning to be cheerleaders. That night, I decided to take in a movie at Rudy Butler's National Theatre. The main feature starred Jim John Rendleman and Jo Anne Hall: one of the short subjects was a Jack Smith specialty. Then, bright and early Sunday morning, I attended the Baptist Church where Rev. David A. Staley was now pastor. I was lucky enough to be ushered to a seat beside Betty Jean Plyler, church secretary. After the service I talked to deacons Jerry Kirk and Jimmy Justice, who, I learned, were both influential lawyers. Monday, I did some shopping uptown. In Bob Foil's book store, Tommye Barker was autographing copies of her latest book, which was banned in Boston because of the insist- ence of Lloyd Ennis, president of Harvard University. Looking up, I saw Mary Coleman hurrying down the street. When I caught up with her, she told me that she was organizer for the A. F. of S., American Federation of Secretaries. Members of the local union that I knew were Jeannette Harviel, Dawn Summitt, Levene Mcl-Iargue, and Grace Manson. When Mary went into the Wallace Building, I tried to go, too, but I learned to my surprise that Margaret Peeler, Joan Bumgarner, and Jane Beard had bought the building and no men were allowed inside of it. Reading the signs on the upstairs windows, just out of curiosity, I found that Araminta Little had a dancing studio. that Margaret Fisher had a research laboratory on the second Hoor, and that Lillian Valley had a dramatics school on the third floor. While my neck was craned back, I noticed a plane flying mighty low up Innes Street. It did a barrel roll and I saw Billie Parker inside calmly flying blindfolded. This completely unnerved me, and I caught the next bus out to the Rowan Memorial Nurses' Home for treatment by former classmates. I was rewarded by getting to talk to Peggy Brady, Ola Dixon, Claudeene Eury, Peggy Loflin, and Coreta Randall. Then, by way of Jim Epting's Hamburger Haven, formerly Mooney's, I went on out to the University to see the exhibit of paintings by James Coggin, Susan James, Peggy Mof- fitt, Bernie Joe Nance, and other nationally famous artists. Incidentally, James' paintings were of the modern variety. I learned that they were done by attaching a paint brush to the end of his baton and painting while he was directing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While there, I saw Nancy Goodman, coach of the Catawba girls' basketball team. There to see the exhibit also was1 Tommy Johnson, famous cattle raiser, and Harry Spry, wealthy manufacturer of shortening. . To refresh me after the tiring exhibit, I decided on a swim at Broken Bottle Pond, formerly Crystal Lake, run by Jerry Rufty. Picking up the phone, I recognized the voice of Doris Boger, who informed me that Dollie Seaford was also a telephone operator. I asked for one of Jim Parks' taailgnvvhich sported the slogan, Park in a Park with Parks. Arriving at the beautiful resort, I saw Burt Guthrie, Marvin Finney and Bob Plyler, whose businesses had made for them great fortunes, and Gerald Adams who had married an even greater one. Swimming in Rufty's rosewater pool, engineered by Rupert Leonard, were Betty Propst, Betty Moore, Joan Walton and other members of the social set. Bill Peeler, who had been Mr. America for four years, was the lifeguard asleep on the diving tower. Inside the clubhouse, l heard children playing and when I went in, I found Mar- garet Roseman managing the nursery. After a delightful swim I decided to stay for the dance that night in the Orange Bumblebee Evening Supper Club managed by Don Williams. During the evening I saw several members of our class employed there. These were Lois Brown, cigarette girl, Harvey Williams, bouncer, Mary Anne Beaver, pianistg Betty Bost, Doris Boulus and Lib Feeney, waitresses. The lovely dance was broken up by Officer Dave Shuler and Sheriff Mary Shuping, when the number done by the torch singer, Pat Jacobs, caused a riot. After resting comfortably in jail in a cell, shared with the famous musician, Wayne Leazer, we were shown wonderful hospitalitQ:by Judge Ben Thompson, who fined us each S50, and by cops Bob Cauble and Bob Corriher. Neither of us had the necessary funds to pay the fines, but Duke Hoffman, prominent Concord business man, was willing to help clear up the embarrassing situation. Leaving the jail, I ran into Anne Councill, successful career woman, who had just added to her famous line of cosmetics a skin cream called Atomic Balm. Then I glanced at my watch and realized I would have to hurry to get back to New York on time. Soon I arrived at the station, ready to leave, and boarded a streamliner. Some of my fellow passengers were David Fesperman, traveling salesman extraordinaryg and Mary Koontz, Margie Morgan, Ann Hoffman, and Alice Hess, officers in the Woman's Air Corps. Walking into the club car I found Betty Rose Benson, hostess, and Jerry Honeycutt, con- ductor, lounging comfortably. At the next stop, Ben Harrison, a very successful planter, got on, and he and I talked all the way to New York about the price of cotton. After this enjoyable week-end of renewing old acquaintances, I returned to my work refreshed and happy. V BILL GREENE, Prophet ' W in 5541151-A,,w Zigi s 1. Q. Every player. from the largest-Bruce Rendleman--to the smallest--Don Godwin--gave everything he had toward winning each game. The team received two severe setbacks during the season when both first string tackles were injured. During the first part of the season. David Staley was lost be- cause of a brain tumor. Later Jerry Kincaid was sidelined with rheumatic fever. However, despite these weakened positions. the boys came through with a record of seven won. two lost, and one tied. They came out second in the rugged Western AA Conference, right behind Burlington's Bull- dogs, who could gain only a tie with the Jackets. The only Conference loss was to High Point: this was regarded by most experts as a stunning upset. After the season ended, the team received a bid to play against Childrens Home in the Piedmont Bowl Game in Winston-Salem. This was a hard-fought battle with the Orphans being victorious by a slim margin of 7 to 6. Giving a post-season summary of the Jackets' sea- son. Horace Billings. Sports Editor of the Salisbury Post. called the Yellow Jackets the fourth best team in the state. SCHEDULE AND RESULTS Sept. 16-Boyden 13.. ...... ..,....
