Football Summary The '44 Iackets started their season with a bang as they broke three records in beating Lexington 2240 in their first game of the season. They handed Lexington the worst defeat that group had ever suffered: also they were the first team to hold Lexington to no first downs and were the first team to beat Lexington three years in a row. Boyden then journeyed to Gastonia where the Green Wave took advantage of their breaks to win. The Gaston county boys led by Charly Pearson, and Bob Frye, came out with a l2-7 verdict. Bob Martin, Bob Reeves and the entire Boyden line turned in good performances in this contest, The jinxed Iackets lost to Albemarle in their first home appearance. Again Martin was the outstanding back while Fred Fisher paced the Boyden line. Coach Richards' boys came back strong the following week to defeat the Black Demons of R. I. Reynolds in WinstonASalem. Bob Surratt showed some good running in this contest and the line play of Iohn Frazier, Bill Taylor and Bert Gillespie was great. In their second home game the Yellow lackets lost again, this time to a powerful High Point aggregation. The line backing of Martin and Taylor was good, but the Bison had too much power. The Iackets struck fast to score three touchdowns as they defeated Burlington. The lighter Bulldogs were unable to stop Martin and Ray Honeycutt, the power boys. Bob Surratt played a good game and the entire Boyden line looked good. The lackets met the powerful Purple Whirlwinds of Greensboro in their next appearance and came out on the short end of a 20-6 score. Greensboro's speed and power and their tricky double wingback play kept the locals baffled until late in the contest. Martin ran well and Fisher played a good game in the line. Boyden defeated Barium in their last road game: they got a lead in the contest and never slowed down. Dunham played one of the greatest games of the season and did some nice pass receiving. lim Rudolph also did some nice running, in fact, the entire line played good football throughout the game. In their last contest, the Yellow Iackets played their best game of the year, but lost to Charlotte. Willett and Barringer played well in the line while Martin again spearheaded the offense.
