the young things though The damsel rn the next dryer came out for arr and of all people rt mas Hope Wrllard She told me she was on the radio now and was doing very well for herself She sa1d for me to be sure to see Pat whrle I was here on my vrsrt but dashed out before saying vthere I could find her In the telephone book the nearest thing I could find to Frazier was Watkins The address was nearby and I rushed over Sure enough there in the outer office sat Pat Frazier and Mary Frances Harkey the very busy secretaries of General P I Watkins and Admrral I D Porter The officers were in conference Just then trying to decide what could be done about the streets of heaven which were guarded by the U S Marines As proof that sailors were much better qualified for the Job Admrral Porter called in som shrnlng examples Bill Mc Daniel Paul Morgan and lack 'trmer General Wat kms had shining examples of hrs own though Tommy Lrngle Harold Rufty and H C Sells A Cauble lack Boyd and Iames Clement put up therr usual valiant defense a decision could not be reached Finally a compromise in the form of female Coast Guards settled tne question of who should guard the streets With a lone male Coast Guardsman Odell Nassar in charge four SPARS took over LaVerne Cauble Betty lean Earnhardt Helen Frye and LeVada Hansell A I stood there admiring their uniforms two angels lack Kepley and Harry Kluttz flew rn to tell me that my time was growing horter and that I must soon return to my normal lrfe on earth Then they offered to be my guides For a whrle I accepted and had one of the most pleasant experiences of my whole adventure They showed me Heavens High School Yes they have one there for high school IS really a pretty wonderful place It looked surprisingly like Boyden on the outside but entering and exploring I found some changes had been made New addr trons to the faculty rncluded Iors Brown Patty Zimmerman and Martha Dell Purvis Edrth Mc Pheters was teaching music Frances Park had taken over Mlss Mabel Lippards place as Dean of Grrls In the gym Katre Sue Holshouser and Ruth Carter were in charge of the grrls whrle M1 Culton was still killing the boys I found Anne lunan trying ago Dorrs Russells little boy was there Both of the Wyrrcks Robbie and Iune had girls Florence Estelle Yarborough was really represented She had twlns' Anne Hubbard was rn cha ge of the French class and exchanging notes Rachel Reavis and Omena Gaskey were at another desk Just typing away At still another were Hazel Holshouser Frances Frsh Rachael Fesperman and Irene Gaskey All thrs wa explained to me by Ruth McDaniel the girl rn charge The place is practically a correspondenc school The door of the prrncrpals office opened and more secretaries filed out Lucille Allgood and Mary Beaver I walked rnto th office bumped into two more Margaret Cranfield and Rowena Donkle and finally found myself face to face with the principal Miss Edna Bankett She was face to face with her personal secretaries the Wagners trying to decide which was Mary E Martha Lee and Just plain Peggy Soon we were talking and rt didnt take us long to get on to the subJect of men She told me Tommy Hudson her When the student body voted to change their organization to the Victory Corps for the duration of the war, the old student council was changed to the Victory Corps Council. ln addition to carrying out the usual duties and activities placed on the governing center ot a student group, the Victory Corps Council introduced a number ot new activities which they thought would help the war effort. The Traiiic Committee Went to work turning oft lights, in the halls, when not in use, and they kept all the outside doors ot the building closed. This helped to conserve electricity and heat at a time when there was a shortage. Several campaigns or drives were sponsored. ln a Victory Book Campaign, 102 books were collected for men in service. The school participated in a scrap paper drive as well as a drive ior all other scrap. One of the most important committees of the Victory Corps Council is the one that handles the buying and selling of War Stamps and Bonds in the school. Stu- dents started out with a goal of S10,000, raised it to S25,000, and reached the last goal before the end of the year. As a summary of the work they had carried on, the council gave a radio and P.-T.-S. A. program in March, explaining activities. Also, when they were observed by the Evaluation Committee when it visited the school, the Victory Corps Council members were commended highly. Backs, left to right: J. D. Porter. Co-captain Bob Weant, Grady Shue, and Bob Gore. Here are Co-captains, Bob Weant and Pete Watkins, who led the Yellow Jackets through a very successful season, standing beside Head Coach Bill Ludwig, Both boys played stellar ball in every game. Pete, rangy end, was placed on the mythical All-Conference and All-State teams and was also a member of the North Carolina All-Star team which defeated a similar team from South Carolina in the Shrine game at Charlotte. Bob, who called signals from his quarterback post, received honorable mention for All State and was on the second string All-Conference team. ddwn Slum' Behind beautiful interfer- ence Fullback Bob Weant plows right through the big hole in the Barium Springs line. They ranged from hot to cold throughout the season and at its termination, the local quint had compiled only a mediocre record. According to prefseason dope, the lackets were odds-on favorites to cop the conference crown. The squad was knee- deep in talent, with tive lettermen and a host ot players with limited experience returning. Coach Bob Culton's charges promptly lived up to these speculations by grabbing the iirst two tilts from a green Barium Springs team by scores of 34 to 20, and 44 to 25. Local patrons were further pleased when the lackets upset the highly favored Salisbury All-Stars 48 to 4l as Center Tuck Gudger got Zl points. Next came High Point's Black Bison, who kept right on goingfstraight to conference and state titles. After losing a thriller to High Point's Zoot City Five by a score ot 44 to 38, the home boys coasted to victories over Reynolds and Lexinge ton. The two games with the latter were rough, to say the least, and lett the Cultonmen in poor shape for the two games with Greensboro that followed. ln the series with the Gate City team, the locals turned trigid and apparently got stage fright, tor they dropped both encounters: There, 23 to 25, in an extra period: and here, 26 to 36. The next opponents tor the oft and on lackets were Rey' nolds CTom Browns boysl and once again, the revenge seeking All-Stars. Both bowed to the Black and Goldwp Reynolds by a score ot 27 to l9, and the All-Stars, to the tune oi 29 to 27, The curtain rang down on regular season play with the Zoot City boys soundly trouncing the Yellow lackets 46 to 22 in tlie furniture city. All in all, it wasnt a poor season, tor the Boyden boys had their big rriltnents: beating the All-Stars twice, taking Gas- tonia tor a ride in the tournament, and Harlan Gudgers making the All-Conference team, and Tucker McDaniel's making the second team. They didn't Win the championship, nor all their games, but they gave 'ern all a fit, and never lost that spirit that marks all Eoyden High athletic teams, d57a.4lLQf,6a11'l Quigaxf C A Clllihon Coach WQMG K awe, T115 Umwl cz -WEE H3141 lmf- YG!
