S. one hundred and seventy-five strong., and dhose at 'the first of their career an 'able man, Elmer Hoke, to lead' them. Caterpillar: Yes, Elmer was a great ole boy and we in Vfonderland greatly ad- 'mired him but just look at the influence of his leadership on the various mem- bers of the class. Frog: Wliy, yes, the nmost outstanding event of the early winter was the Eng- lish theme Written by their most promising author-Bill Cashwell. It read: A geese is a low, heavy set boid which is mostly -meet and feathers. His 'head sits on one end and he siits on the odher. A geese can t sing :much on account of dampness of the .moisture. He ain't got no between-his-toes, and -he's got a ilittle balloon on his stomach to keep him from sinking. Some geeses when they 'gets big has cu-rls on their tales and is called ganders. Ganders don'.t haff to sit and hatch, but just eat and loaf, and go swimmin'. If I was 'il goose, I'd rather be a gander. ' Historian: However, you must remember that finally these babes in the Wood finished their Freshman year with flying colors. Frog: Oh. yeah? Historian: Yes, in one last romlp. They won field day from the upper classmen. Caterpillar: They may have been able to run fast on field day, but when it ca-me to getting to class in a hurry, they were as slow as the Mock Turtle. Turtle: And you have to suffer for being slow. If the hours that the pupils stayed in for being tardy had been bricks, they could have added two new wings to B. H. V Histor-ian: And so this class embarked in the boat of learning, choosing as its mighity consellor, Burns Beaver, to guide the skiff 'to another victorious field day. Walrus: That year they -were wise fools : that's what they were-and- Horse: They 'threatened blloody murder to that most honored and revered of all patriots-Julius Caesar-and- Gryphon: They called down all sorts of vengeance on the head iof that illustri- ous smart guy, Pythogoras-and- Historian: Please, please calm yourselves and 'let me go on with the history of this famfous' class. These faults you have mentioned were childish ones and were quite overcome in later years. All: Boooo-Booo-etc. ' Historian: fYelling loudlyj Quiet! Quiet! I will have quiet. Giraffe: Look at her!! Look at her! That's the way fthe class of l'33 acted. They were so wild and caused so much com-motion that the most! illustrious Pro- fessor Knox was called upon time and time again to Warn them of their mis- behavior. All: Here! I-Iere! Historian: Yes, that's all true, but this was only practice for the inter-class de- bate in which their debaters, Marguerite Morrison, Burns Beaver, and Frances Garrett walked off with first honors. Now what have you to say to that! fSilencej And to further 'their already very worthy ability.in their Junior year, Russell Kerr and Carolyn George made Boyden High's 'affirmative tri- angular debating team. XValrus: That's all very nice, but by close observation the teachers of the Junior Class found out that their students were well versed in the art of casting their eyes about the roo.m and gaining information from different papers. Historian: That's not true! Five imernbers of that class were elected to the Na- tional Honor Society, namely: Caroline Lauchman, Frances Garrett, Carolyn George, 'Margaret Thomason, and Sarah Peeler. Frog: What of the low average in citizenship- D ? fSarcasticallyj Isn't that good and we -also know that they developed the art of giggling and acting smart- to the nib degree. Historian: And lest ye forget, let your incapable minds dwell on the elaborate banquet at which the Juniors gave the Seniors a good time. Gryphon: Being Seniors certainly made you all conceited and snooty. You should see the schnozzles that some have developed from 'snooting under- classmen. Historian: That's natural, though, isn t it when it was proved they were sup- erior? Remember -they won Color Day, and it certainly took superior minds to select Nell Choate as president. Walrus: I thought Fd die laughing when the would-be-adult seniors marched in with those baibylike dunce hats perched on their heads.f We've noticed 'how child-ish they acted all year. i i31l Historian: But surely you canit condemn the actions of the cast in All, of a Sudden Peggy. Giraffe: It was easy enough for those girls to act: they practice put-ting on all the time. And it was natural for them to wear all that paint, 'cause 400 compacts were used during the year. Historian: You creatures would .misrepresent these people with your talk of paint and powder. How about some facts for the other side? The most out- standing squadmen on that year's victorious football team were men of the class of '33. Herald: Is that all your evidence? Historian: As well as I can remember that completes the history of the class of '33. Queen: Off with her head! All: Yes, yes, off with hor head! King: fTo juryj Give your verdict. Frog: This radical, representing the class of '33, who calls himself Senior shall on the morrow die. Senior: No, no, we meant no harm. Herald: Not yet, not yet. By careful calculation I found that the average height of the class was 5 feet 8 inches. Giraffe: Yes, I know Daddy Miller was most as tall as I am. Caterpillar: And Peggy Wallenborn was only 1 foot 2 inches. QLaug-hterj King: Order, order. Statistician: The average weight was about 140 pounds. 4 Humpty: How could that be possible with fat and sassy Harvey Bernhardt with his several tons and Franklin- Gryphon: What .about Rachel Crowder and her several ounces? Statistician: And the shoe size was number 7. Horse: There's some mistake: Charles Chase's feet alone would make it more than that. Statistician: The average finished school after four years strain, but some were influenccrl to stay on 'longer to play footwball. Also this class was abou-t even- ly balanced with blondes, and brunettes. Eyes were from azure blue 'to 'jet black mounted by penciled black eyebrows. MUSIC DEPARTMENT This year the -music department has doubled its participation in school activities and has enlarged on all its various bra'nc'hes, thus making .music a :more animate part of a student's life. N 1 The band -has made excellent progress, taking part in zitlrletic events, school programs, community concerts, and parades, while the orchestra, supported by the quality of work -done, 'has increased its popularity -and made qui-te a name for itself. Bo-th of these organi- zations entered t'he State Music 'Contest in Greensboro vsfhere tlhey made a good showing against strong competition. The vocal division of the -music department is one of which the school may be justly proud. The Girls' Glee Club,l1a selected group, was awarded first place in the contest. During the year 'this group has greatly profited by repeated 'pub- lic appearances on community and school programs. More members and -added spirit have resulted in unusual accomplishments for the Boys, Glee Club. A umixed chorus of ninety voices has been formed by the union of the Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs. An opera-tfta pre- sented by this group 'proved a decided success, While mile-h attention has been accorded them due to the active part they have taken in school prbgraims and the state contest. In the small field of ensembles, the Girls Trio has attainedfthe distinction of winning first place in Greensboro. This group along with the Mixed Octet has appeared on numerous programs. l ps 'A I 9 r .isa o , , ' .1- . 'if' , l A 5.1 K.. ff-c 'NN -L, s. gs. -N ,X , I , , I B-. I I-s. - ,,, as ,x .
