THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF BOX ELDER HIGH SCHOOL BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH PRESENT THE 1962 Boomerang EDITORS Dave Carlquist Rita Palmer STAFF Kenny Anderson Alaine Hailing Carolyn Hansen Marcia Hillam Sherry Jensen Margaret Mason Carol Morgan Pam Rawlins Kaye Tingey PHOTOGRAPHER Larry Riddle SPONSOR John A. Wayman lithographed by COMMUNITY PRESS Orem, Uteh Margaret Mason Studentbody Secretary Stuart Curtis Studentbody Vice President 2 Roland M. Gourley Advisor We the editors of the 1962 Boomerang dedicate this book to student government and the students and faculty members who worked for it. During this year of great transitions there was a group of students who devoted much of their time and efforts to the furthering and strength- ening of Box Elder High school, new traditions, and student government. This group was the execu- tive council. Leading the executive council were three very capable officers — Alvin Anderson, stu- dentbody president; Stuart Curtis, studenlbody vice president, and Margaret Mason, studentbody secre- tary. These three students with the help of Mr. Gourley, their advisor, worked hard to please the majority and make the year the success that it was. In times past, as the school year began, the studentbody was asked to vote on whether they wanted student government or not. This year was no exception. As discussion of the pros and cons concerning government by the students began, a wonderful and enlightening thing happened. Many of Box Elder's conscientious students began to exer- cise their democratic rights and voiced their objec- tions to student government as it had been in the past. The resulting controversies were so great that the administration stated that the upcoming vote would be the last one. Therefore the students were faced with either accepting student government for good or else eliminating it from Box Elder for a number of years. After serious thought the student- body accepted student government by a large ma- jority, and it will remain as the main form of rule at Box Elder High school until further evidence war- rants another vote in the future. Facing East toward the rugged Wasatch Mountains, Elder High School reflects the ever changing hues Tn its coloring. ' As the folded slopes turn from a rolling green, to light ..brown, v a gypsy-red and finally to an ermine white as the canyons and pea are filled and frosted, the students flock through the doors for nine exciting months of learning and laughter. This sprawling school is as modern and new as its environment. The doors swing wide to welcome many races, creeds and colors. Inside, there is a warmth and friendliness as enduring as the everlasting hills. 4 5 Circumstances placed the 1962 seniors in an interesting position. They could claim allegience to two high schools. They stood as the link between the old and the new. Reaching back they embraced those traditions shared by hundreds of Box Elder High graduates; reaching forward they helped form standards others will follow with pride. They were the last class to decorate and present a Junior Prom at the school which has now become a junior high. Always ambitious, their theme, Kashmir, Land of Romance' 'transformed the gym into plush Oriental splendor. Their Purple and White dance, signifying the first senior dance at the new Box Eider High set a pattern for others to emulate. Another first, that of being the first grad- uating class, ended a year that could have been bewildering, but instead was exciting and rewarding in school associations and achievements. The class of 1962 will never be just another class, but a special class, dubbed by fate to initiate a whole new beginning for themselves; to be the seniors not only in fact, but in spirit; to understand the complexities of change and support it; and to bring to a successful conclusion the first year in the new Box Elder Senior High School 13 CLASS PARENTS: D. A. Olsen, Christine Richards. The class of 1962 has been endowed with the mem- ory of many class parents. Richard Capener and LaVoyle Stenquist started with the class as the sophomore parents. When Mrs. Stenquist took a leave of absence, Karen Anderson, now Mrs. Forest Hansen, teamed with Mr. Capener to serve as the Junior class parents. At the beginning of the senior year the class was adopted by two new people, Christine Richards and D. A. Olsen, who gave their willing assistance and wise guidance cheerfully to the end. All five of these people are truly appreciated by the class. We, the staff, feel privileged in pre- senting them to you, the students of 1962. 36 Personality His name is Gary Nay, and if you want to wrap his personality up in one word you could rhyme it with Nay and say gay! Then after that you could add friendliness and loyalty to school and studentbody. Gary was Boys' League president and a B'lver vice president. Personality Alvin Anderson, better known as Abbott, has truly deserved the honor of being one of our yearbook personalities. Behind those twinkling blue eyes and that warm smile is a real leader. As Studentbody president he has hurdled his problems with as much ease as he played football and wrestled his way to state champion. As a B'lver he was tops, too. Forever bubbling and always full of pep and energy is our little cheer- leader, Vicki Larson. Although small, she is as full of spirit and get up and go as anyone twice her size. Wherever you go you can be sure Vicki will be one of the first to give you a friendly “Hi there! Personality 39 Personality Charm, grace, intelligence, and motivation comprise the well rounded per- sonality of Jean Ball. These outstanding qualities were appreciated by the students who elected her twice in a row as junior class vice president in 1960 and senior class secretary in 1961. She is a loyal B'Ette and has also found the time to do an excellent job as a page editor on The Bee. 40 Underneath the earnestness of our studentbody vice president, Stuart Curtis, lies a great abundance of friendliness and cooperation. He has been a guiding influence in all manner of school affairs. Stu was also able to survive the initia- tions of the B'lvers and become a member. Personality Personality Dave Carlquist, co-editor of the Boomerang, senior class president, B'lver, and exchange student to Finland, is every inch a personality. His lively interest in school affairs is equal to his interest in people. A willingness to tackle or better any endeavor is a characteristic well known to all of his associates. Charming, gentle and always a lady is our studentbody secretary. But do not be deceived, she is also capable, reliable, and always dependable no matter what she is asked to do. She has also served faithfully as a B'Ette and as a mem- ber of the Boomerang Staff. An air of friendliness and an abundance of sincerity combine to make Margaret Mason one of our most loved personalities. Personality 43 44 Personality Vivacious, enthusiastic, and full to the brim with friendliness is our own Jane Sumida. Jane's charming smile and welcoming Hi make her a real choice personality. Jane was selected as homecoming queen, and has been one of our cheerleaders during the past two years. Besides being a football, basketball, and track star, B'lver member, and senior class vice president, Harold Thompson is a also a personality star. Harold, also known as Dewy, always has a friendly smile and an appealing grin for everyone he meets. Personality Personality David Smoot and Box Elder High went together from the beginning. He lettered in wrestling as a sophomore, was the only junior to receive The Player of the Week award in football, and as a senior has been prominent in helping shape new policies for our new school. Bright-eyed and enthusiastic Kathy Claybaugh devotes most of her talents to campus doings. Acting as head cheerleader, Kathy has had many responsibilities and duties, but you can be sure whenever she was asked to do something it was done and done right. Ka hy has, and always will be a B. E. personality. Personality 47 Personality Unassuming Rita Palmer is also sharing the honor of being one of our year- book personalities. We all know her as one of the Boomerang co-editors, junior class secretary, B'Ette treasurer, and a darling girl to be associated with. We'll always think of her as a charming beauty with a head full of neat tricks and ideas. 48 Not only have Kathy, Eileen, Vicky, Peggy, Jane, and Carol supported the team and led the student body in cheers; but they have also supported all of the other activi- ties of the year and participated in most of them. They have been very good cheer- leaders, and as a student body we are proud they represent us. Stupid zipper! Went to buy a ribbon? Not trench-mouth! Dynamite comes in small packages. Plain Jane My prayers weren't answered. 50 Yes, we Juniors will have to admit it's been an event-filled year. It's been a year of wonderful and treasured memories. Memories that will ring in our hearts forever. We can easily say, we've worked mighty hard to make our past two years a success. Even back when we were Sophomores we lit the BEE so good, it continued to burn all during the Homecoming game. Then pride filled within us as we presented our first real task, Frost Fantasy, our Christmas assembly and dance. All of a sudden we found ourselves looking toward our Junior year. Soon it was time to plan for our Peach Day's float. We used the theme of Deep Fanta-Sea which won a first place rating. Shortly after our float success our long awaited painting of the town was upon us. And did we ever paint it! Our thoughts then turned to our biggest task of all, our Junior Prom. Yes this was our big prom and we were determined to make it one of the best proms ever. When the big night finally arrived we knew all of the hours of work that we had put in it, had resulted in a wonderful success. Although we now look toward our Senior year with big ideas and high hopes, we will never forget how proud we were to say, Yes, I'm a Junior. 53 CLASS PARENTS: Arlee Laird and Lloyd Hust We the Juniors of Box Elder High School have learned to appreciate, honor, and respect our faculty; but there are two members who are very special to us because they served as our class parents. We will always remember and look up to Mr. Lloyd Hust and Mrs. Arlee Laird. Building our Peach Days float and painting the town just wouldn't have been the same without them. We are glad that they helped and encouraged us with our prom and assembly so that we could create some- thing we will always be proud of. We are very grateful to our class parents for the many things they have done for us, and we hope the juniors of next year will appre- ciate them as we have. 54 % President Dennis Yamasaki 55 Our prize winning float. This year has been a year of differences and unusualities in many of the school activities. There were more than half of the assemblies held in the gym because the auditorium was not finished. When the auditorium was finally finished, one of the biggest pro- ductions in the history of Box Elder was presented to the stu- dentbody and the public. Rhythm Route, under the di- rection of Fontell Messervy, dis- played the talents of over 350 students. This year as before there was a variety of kings and queens chosen. The F.F.A. and F.H.A. presented their annual Harvest Ball. The Juniors made a success of their prom with Green Leaves of Summer. Sadie Hawkins came and went with the usual amount of laughs. Mr. Cheney, despite many cancellations and set-backs was able to produce a school play, and he also initiated for the first time in the school a group of debaters and legis- lators. The Top-Ten scholars were chosen from the senior class, and many other students were honor- ed for their outstanding achieve- ments on award assemblies dur- ing the year. Can you see, Bobby? We've worked day and night. It's time for a rest. The time and effort we spent on our scenery paid off. {Junior Prom Qreen Cemies of Summer When the class officers finally pick- ed the Prom theme and committees were chosen, excitement about the Prom was already mounting. The Green Leaves of Summer was the intriguing theme which sent members of the junior class on a large scale search for green cloth. The familiar gymnasium slowly lost its true identity as the juniors dili- gently turned the basketball court into a lovely southern plantation with all the necessary atmosphere. There was the usual secrecy about the theme, and the tenseness and frantic last minute details of lighting. As Friday, March 25, arrived the halls were alive with anticipation of this first Junior Prom to be held in the new Box Elder High School. The last leaf was in place and this was it. The seniors and sophomores were invited guests. They danced under trees hung with myriads of green leaves. They viewed the large stately mansion surrounded by a beautiful fountain. They marveled at the chande- liers, three in all, which lent a note of dignity and authenticity to the en- tire scene. All too soon the orchestra, the Scotsmen of U.S.U., was playing the strains of the last dance and another Junior Prom was added to history. The juniors of 1962 may well be proud of their Prom and that the Green Leaves of Summer made their appearance earlier than usual. We couldn't have accomplished it without the help of tome of the teachers. Mr. Hust, class dad; Mr. Westenskow; Mrs. Laird, class mom; Mr. Larsen, and Mr. Hyde. Isn’t this a picturesque entrance for our promenade Notice our elegant fountain. Class officers and dates snapped in the promenade line. Even the background for the orchestra was beautiful. After many hours of hard work, the Prom was a tremendous success. David Gilmour Valedictorian '62 Zop Zen Mr. Nielson congratulates David. David Gilmour was named valedictorian of the Class of '62 on the annual scholarship assembly in April. Along with David the nine other members of the Top-Ten were also an- nounced. Out of a possible 160 points Gilmour attained a total of 151. This represents an average grade of better than an A minus average. The members of the Top-Ten were chosen by the members of the graduation committee. This committee is headed by George A. Nielson, and their purpose is to check the credits of the seniors and rank the upper third of the graduating class. Jane Braegger Don Bickers Linda Barker Carma Houghton Margaret Mason Keith Melton Carolyn Munns Reese Nielson Jean Peart Each year athletics is awaited with excited anticipation and enthusiastic pride. This section summarizes the athletic activities of football, basketball, track, tennis, baseball, swimming, wrestling, and golf. We will never forget the mem- ories we had at football season. The team and the pride we had for them even in rain and snow. This year in basketball we not only went to state and beat the region champions twice, but we took fifth place and received a beautiful trophy, the first in basketball for 14 years. Box Eld- er was really represented well too, with colorful pom-poms, purple pennies, banners and large purple signs. The boys who participated in these activities grew and matur- ed through hard work and keen competition and also aimed for good sportsmanship at every game, win or lose. We can always be proud of Box Elder's athletic endeavors. 85 Front row, loft to right: A. Thompson, B. Buland, C. Billings, F. Rees, H Thompson, R. Taniguchi, M. Burbank, C. Card, D. Brightenberg, L. Vice President When the Sophomore class of 1962 graduates from Box Elder high school in 1964, they will be the first class to have gone all the three years in the Hew building. When they first filed into the auditorium to take their places on the south side they filled the downstairs and upstairs sections approximately 320 strong. They made their way, mistakes and all, to become an important part of the school and its activities. They lit the B and sponsored the Christmas dance. Their Christmas assembly was a spectacular production with over 300 partici- pants. Like a colony of efficient Bees, the sophomores worked hard to blend into the traditions and wavs of their new school; and succeeded. CLASS PARENTS: Fern Gardner and Delmont Beecher. There are the Boomerang and Bee Staffs, the B'Ettes, Rockettes, B'lvers, Key Club, Boys' League, Girls' League, Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, Future Teachers of Am- erica, Art League, Science Club, Girls' Athletic Association, Choir, Band, and Orchestra. Often the question arises in the minds of many people con- cerning the value of these groups in our school. Do they really help us or do they really detract from our education? Do they add to the spirit and happi- ness in our school, and help pre- pare us for the social side of life? It is strictly a matter of opinion whether they hinder or aid The Bees, but there is enough evidence to assume that they are an asset. The Rockettes, B'Ettes, and Pep Band certainly add to the quality of an athletic meet by their half- times, and the B'lvers and Key Club help by ushering and per- forming other service projects. The Boys' League and Girls' League have very informative and interesting meetings, and the F.F.A., F.H.A. and the F.T.A. prepare young people for their life as adults. The Art League Choir, Band, and Orchestra teach the students to appreciate fine arts. The Science Club gives the up and coming scientist some- thing to do and participate in, and the G.A.A. gives girls who are interested in athletics a chance to participate in them. 123 Mr. Wayman Sponsor 124 From behind the solid Birch door of room 201 during any seventh hour, you could hear a variety of whisperings, impreca- tions, and roars. Just what went on in there no one will ever know for certain. The only tangible object to emerge from that maze of prints, dummy sheets, and negatives, was the 1962 Boomerang. As the year progressed the one and only supporting strength was that of Big John, our un- shakable sponsor At his side was Larry, our faithful photog- rapher, the only other sane per- son on the entire staff. In spite of our definite handi- caps, we still managed to meet our deadlines, and put out this annual We the Staff of the 1962 Boomerang hope that you will receive as much enjoyment from reading this book as we have from assembling it. For the first time THE BEE was published bi-monthly. As a staff we have grown to love Mrs. Morris. She has always been willing to help and guide us in all our undertakings. Although Bruce had his prob- lems with the staff, he was still a good editor with unlimited ideas for improving the paper and giving us more work to do. His best innovation was the Newsletter. For the first time in the history of the Bee Staff we had a for- eign editor, Paul Eubel, who served as our columnist. When we finally moved into our own room in the new school building the year was almost half over, but we made up for all the lost time by enjoying the room twice as much. We certain- ly hope that all the Bee Staffs to follow will appreciate this pri- vate domain as much as we have. 126 Jean Ball Editorial Editor Paul Eubel Columnist Lorraina Yamasaki Exchange Editor Marilyn Bingham Librarian Joal Hust Sports Editor Mike Ohman lawrenca Riddle Photographer Photographer 127 Nancy Morell and Arlea Laird Sponsors OFFICERS: Vice President, Kaye Tingey; President, Lynda Packer; Secretary, Sharon Tsushima. Wayman Gary Schofield Robert Wendel Darold Simmons Owen Westenskow So, here is the end . . . and the beginning. The year has been unusual and exciting. We read Hamlet, and there was enough water To drown Ophelia and all her petticoats . . . We held assemblies on the patio, And in the gym. We didn't have the circus, But we have had clowns of another sort. We had sack lunches and workmen in our rooms. We had choir and band in the salad bowl. We began new traditions and eliminated others. We had our first Junior Prom in our big gym. We grew each day. We had our problems. We laughed . . . We yelled . . . We cried . . . We compromised. We worked cooperatively — Students, administration, and workmen. The year of the unfinished building is finished. But, the end? No. Only the beginning. 153 Nam Andersen, Darrell .. ..
