The Bear Paw Published by The Class of 19L9 BOX ELDER HIGH SCHOOL I BOX ELDER, MONTANA O MAY, NINETEEN FORTY-NINE v I 7 This annual repgesents the revival of a tradi- tion that had been for- gotten for many years at Box Elder High School. We seniors feel that this book will in a easure chronicle the even s that make up a part of our school life. Perh ps its greatest value will come in later years when our classmates will recall with varied pleasure the time spent in school. Some might exclaim 'Did I really look like that! or 'How oddly horrid . were the styles then'. ' Perhaps this book has its short comings and surely it isn't as com- plete as it might be, but our hope is that you will cherish the remembrance that this 'Bear Paw W brings you. It is in a small way an expression-of our appreciation of all he had done for us, our school and our community. 'Nick' as he is affectiam ately called, has been a friend and counsellor. He had made our school life pleasant. His first concern has been for our welfare, We know that Mn Fouarge has given us fine examples of good citizen- ship and respect for our school. The senior class of l9L9 entered the Box Elder High School in the fall of 1945 with an enrollment of seven. As green freshmen we were subjected to many embarassing experiences that supposedly constitute initiation. We got through that with flying colors and recovered without any mishaps. Later in the year we lost one member when Delia Crosswhite withdrew from school. As sophomores, we started with five members only to lose Earny Faechner who joined the Army. Our sole activities that year con- sisted of initiating the freshmen and sponsoring several mixers. The next fall found us entering our junior year with many plans for the social events annually sponsored by the junior class. Agnes Faechner did not return for her junior year, but the addition of two new members, Freda Turner and Lewis Dielman, increased our number to six. Sarah Rosette was married before the end of the school term and left us minus one more. How as 'Mighty' Seniors with a class of ten, we are looking for- ward to the Junior Prom, Sneak Day, the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Commencement Exercises. We are proud of the fact that our class will be the largest that has graduated from this high school in many years and we are looking to the future with many hopes and varied ambitions for future success. --Wilma Nolan and Eileen Hobbs nnuaf Sfaff EDITOR-in-CHIEF --------------------- Eileen Hobbs Assistant Edit0P ---------------- P Mary Ann Cgrgqrgn Business Manager .--..-........-..-- - .Wilma Nolan Athletics -------- - - - - - -Russell Hoffman E Bert Corcoran Activities ---------------------- Bernice Sangrey Humor ------------------ - ------ Lewis Dielman Typists -------- Freda Turner, Bernice Sangrey and Eileen Hobbs Advisor -------------------- Miss Evelyn Mansfield CEEBEQSS tlfyvoqcfgecylb While I was gazing out of the window of my down town office in New York, I kept thinking about Box Elder High School and my form- er classmates. The last I had seen of them was in l9L9. A lot of things can happen in eleven years, so I decided since this was the time of the year when I usually took my vacation I would look up my former classmates. The first place I went was Havre, Montana where I found Wilma Nolan who was now Director of Nurses at the Nolan Santuary, a new hospital that was erected in her honor, I spoke to her about having a reunion dinner and she obligingly off- ered to have it at her home. While Wilma and I waited for the others to arrive we discussed our personal affairs and, just as I was about to tell Wilma that she had changed a lot in the last eleven years, Eileen Hobbs walk- ed in looking radiantly happy. She told me she was doing quite well. While we were 'making with the conversation' Freda Turner, Lewis Dielman, Maxine St. Pierre, Lucy Parker, Bernice Sangrey, Russell Hoffman, and my brother, Bert came in and each told of his success. kugy Parker is now a laboratory tech. at Mayo clinic in Rochester, inn. Freda Turner who was always quiet and shy in school is now a pri- vate secretary for John Powers of the Powers Model Agency. Maxine St. Pierre had become a dental nurse and is now a lieuten- ant in the womens' nursing corps. Bernice Sangrey who was always musically inclined is now on the teaching staff of the Julliard Institute. Lewis Dielman had attended an agricultural college and is now man- ager of an experimental station. Russell Hoffman had joined the Navy after graduation and is now an Admiral on the U.S.S. Montana. Bert Corcoran who always had a knack for basketball is now playing professional ball with the New York Knickerbockers. --.Mary Ann Corcoran HIGH POINTS OF THE YEAR When five pep club girls went to Hingham and came home bruised but happy. During our sophomore year Jack Brownell, Brian McBride, and Bob Pullin joined us, but only Bob finished the year, then he joined the Navy during the summer. At the beginning of our junior year we started again with a class of six. The new students were Martha Mitchell, and John Lorin Mit- chell. Our social activities this year consisted of sponsoringtheThank giving Dance and the St. Patrick's Dance. Upon returning to high school and their sophomore year in l9L8, they added five new students to their class, thus making their number eleven. Just before the end of the first semester they added one more to their number so that the class was composed of Bonnie Hobbs, Ruth Hobbs, Bert Williamson, Olive Parisian, George Rosette, George Skinner, Kay Hepworth, Anna Parker, Martha Beck Diane Allen and Kristin Smith. Some of the girls have joined the Glee Club and all of them are in the Pep Club. They were Mary Agnes Gardipee, Alice Mitchell, Walter Denny, Johnny Corcoran Charles Rosette, Burke Allen, Mary Jane Boushie, and Clara Faechner. The eight freshmen, who were looking forward to initi- ation found that the ten speedy sophomores had planned it very well. The sophomore sponsor, Mr. Hess, did very well in seeing that the freshmen carried out the orders of the sophomores. The freshmen felt slightly ill from the lunch the sophomores fed them, but they recovered and were in school the next day. The second week in school they gave a mixer for the sophomores in return for the initia- tion party. During the first semester, Pat Burnside of Wisconsin joined us and Walter Denny, Mary Agnes Gardipee, Alice Mitchell, and Mary Boushie left us to go to school in Rocky Boy. That leaves us a total of five members, who are looking forward to initiation next year when they will be giving the orders. --Clara Faechner ITIES 2 The Box Elder Bears ended their season successfully under the coaching of Harry Hess. The line-up for the season was as follows: center, George Rosette, forwards, Captain Bert Corcoran and Bert Williamson, guards, Charles Rosette and Clement Hobbs, substitutes, Johnny Corcoran and Russell Hoffman. Regardless of the fact that there were only seven boys out for the season, the Bears made a good showing at the Hi-Line Tournament placing third. We were eliminated in the District Tournament after losing the first two games. The high point man of the season was Bert Corcoran, with 300 goints. Bert was also high on free throws with an average of 0.L per cent. The Bears played 17 games this season, winning 10 and losing 7. They scored 895 points to their opponents 89h points. The boys wish to thank all their loyal rooting section ad everyone who has cooperated in making this a successful season. --Bert Corcoran and Russell Hoffman WTHE BEAR PAW' 'The Bear Paw' is the Box Elder high school paper published by the juniors and seniors every month. The students consider it one of the best ways of getting publicity for the school and also for ad- vertising school events and explaining to our parents and the pub- lic just what is happening in school. Be- cause of the smallness of the group we have been content with singing biggest for the program venture only in two parts, alto and soprano. The group made their contribution of the year when the sang several numbers Christmas program. The volume of the numbers sang for the was increased by the addition of several boys who dared to into the spirit of Christmas. But their adventurous spir- it lasted only so long and after the beginning of the second semes ter they, along with several of the girls, dropped out. The glee club's present membership is eight. They are as fol lows: altos, Ruth Hobbs, Kay Hepworth, Pat Burnside and Wilma Nolan soprano: Beverly Prather, Clara Faechner, Diane Allen and Eileen Hobbs. We have been practicing several numbers for baccalaureate ser vices and the graduation exercises. Miss Haynes is to be thanked for her sincere efforts to guide us, and her help in making this a successful year. --Eileen Hobbs. The membership of the pep club was as usual composed of all the girls in high school who cared to take part. At the begin- ning of the basketball season the girls held a meeting to elect officers and cheerleaders. Cheerleaders elected were: Mary Ann Corcoran, Agnes Stewart and Eileen Hobbs. Officers were: Bonnie Hobbs, president, and Laura Williamson, secretary and treasurer. It was decided to purchase new uniforms for the cheer- leaders, but the cost of made-to-order uniforms was prohibitive, the girls bought royal blue material and made skirts to which they added white sweaters to complete the snappy outfit. The girls gave a dance January 29 to raise money for the Hi-line Tournament and to pay for the uniforms. They made a profit of 327. Another social event of the year sponsored by the club was a Basket Social held February 12, to raise money to attend the district tourney. This was successful to the tune of 528, tax free, and enough to see the girls through 'till the end of an- other successful year. --Eileen Hobbs. .Exif .Mew it .. Two students were assigned to each concession and all of the booths were attractively decorated by the students in charge of it. Bingo, dart throw, basketball throw, baseball throw and penny toss were just a few of the many booths in operation. As an added attraction to this year's carnival, a carnival queen was elected from among four girls. There was one girl nominated from each class. Senior candidate was Eileen Hobbs, Junior candi- date was Laura Williamsong sophomore candidate was Bonnie Hobbs and the freshmen were represented by Clara Faechner. At twelve o'clock that evening Eileen Hobbs was elected the win- ner and was crowned by Bonnie Hobbs, runner-up. Philip Lee Gaudet was crown-bearer and Jo Anne Williamson was flower girl. The carnival was a great success and despite the hard work put into making it one, the students enjoyed it and planned to make it an annual event. JUNIOR PROM The most gala social event of the.year, the Junior Prom was held April 9th. he juniors worked hard on the decorations and prepara- tion for it and it proved to be worth every bit of the effort. The theme, 'Easter Parade', was carried out very effectively in decorations which featured painted silhouettes of couples on the walls, faced as if they were strolling toward the stage. The win- dows were hung with streamers of orchid and yellow held back by flowers. The backwall of the stage was covered with streamers also in yellow and orchid, and featured a treble cleff design with musi- cal notes and 'Easter Parade' written below it. The ceiling was decorated with streamers of orchid and yellow weaved back and forth across the gym to form a low ceiling effect. The grand march was at 11:30 and was led by Laura Williamson, junior class president and Bert Corcoran, senior class president.
