Love is at the heart of all MPrecious Moments creations. They express heartfelt sentiments. Since a yearbook is designed to be a compilation of all of the spe- cial events of the school year, it seemed very appropriate to choose as a theme, :Precious Moments . lt was with great trepidation that l sent off a letter to Mr. Sam Butcher asking permission to use not only his trademark, MPrecious Moments but also to incorporate his wealth of drawings into the Apogee's theme. My fears were soon allayed, however. Not long after my letter was sent, l received a personal phone call from Mr. Butcher's son, Jon. He relayed the message that his father was pleased that we wished to use Precious Mo- ments as the theme for our yearbook. Not only were we given permission to use the title but we also were allowed to reproduce any of his work. The caring and love which he generously offered his time and his talent to create an original drawing depict- ing Bowsher's mascot to be used on our cover. Words cannot adequately describe Sam Butcher's artistic talents. His work speaks for itself. lt is also impossible to satisfactorily express the grati- tude which the Apogee staff would like to convey to Mr. Butcher and his associates for allowing us to use his talents to depict the special moments in the lives of the students and staff at Bowsher High School. On behalf of all of us at Bowsher, I siinply say thank you Mr. Butcher - for caring and sharing for helping us depict our special 'Precious Moments. . H P - ia ii .' The porcellain bisque figurines were introduced eight years later. Since that time, many other times have been produced bearing this unique style of artistry such as plates, cups, bells, stationery, calendars, and dolls. Mr. Butcher applies his artistic talents to turn ev- eryday situations into meaningful messages about life. And, since home life is so important to Mr. Butcher, his work concentrates on family oriented events and circumstances. He says that he has been blessed with a large and loving family whose members furnish ample reference for Precious Moments subjects. Perhaps the most personal ex- pression ofthe carryover from family to artwork is shown by the Precious Moments dolls. They rep- resent some of the immediate family members of Sam Butcher and his partner, Bill Biel. Mr. Butcher and his wife Katie, also a skillful artist, combined their talents to create the dolls which depict the off- spring of the artists. He styles them and she designs the body and clothes as well as stitching the fabrics for the originals. Mr. Butcher resides in Carthage, Missouri where he and members of his family work together with his associates to create items which express senti- ments about li.fe's very Precious Moments.
