How do you celebrate life? We're all so different Mixtures of races in our cups of happiness And culture wise . . . all so contrasting. So tell me about your life And l'll share mine with you Teach me, and l will learn, l'll also accept you. Juha Koski is a junior from Vantaa, Finland. He tells us that there are many differences between American schools and schools in Finland, where students follow a different schedule every day. In Fin- land schools, classes are 45 minutes in length and there is a full 50 minutes between classes. There is a mandatory 9 years of schooling after which a student may enter a specialized high school and then college. Juha is interested in cars, sports, and especially in photographic art. After he serves a year in the army, he hopes to enter an art college. Juha will return to Finland in June. You may have felt alone at first But now you can talk to me About where you were born And how you lived. l'll laugh with you, not at you And though our skins contrast And likewise our backgrounds lt's all the better for you and me. Foreign Exchan e Students V' .. 1 lg. 4,2 js I lg. f Y How would you describe America? Senior Hallvard Almestad says big and flat . Hal is an exchange student from Volda, Norway. He finds the people of America to be open and friendly, although the rules of the home he finds to be more restrictive. School in America is easier, Hal says. ln Nonlvay, schools have more subjects, including religion. Hal has no trouble communicating with Americans as he took seven years of English before he came to America. Hal has many interests. He plays soccer and the guitar and he enjoys fishing from his 22 foot boat. After graduation, Hal will join the army in Norway. After the army, he hopes to make a careeer in the media. Hal will return to Nonrvay in June. 26 X Rebel Life Girls, cars, and chocolate cookies are the things senior Jean Wendorff likes best about America. Jean is an exchange student from Stuttgart, West Germany, who is experiencing America until June. His favorite American food is Little Caesar's pizza and his favorite American band is Boston . Water polo and swimming are among his interests. After high school, Jean plans to make a career in the Ger- man military service. When asked about the major differences between Bowsher and his school at home, Jean remarked that students do not move from classroom to classroom, but the teachers, rather, circulate. ln Germany, Jean says, school is adjourned at 1:00 p.m. However, students sometimes attend school on Saturdays and are in school for thirteen years instead of twelve. Jean is enjoying life in America butwill return home to Germany in June.
