Deviibiss scored early and held their lead throughout the game, with the Rebels scoring their only touchdown in the final seconds. The half-time activity was highlighted with the crowning of the 1971 Homecoming Queen. Mary Ann Loucks was crowned by last year ' s queen, Janet Grimm, and escorted by Gail Rice, Her court consisted of Carolyn Hochmuth, Lynn Pioterek, Betsy Smith, and Bonnie Zawodny. Nine of the past ten queens revisited Bowsher for the occasion. They were Anne Moore (1962), Carolyn Krause (1963), Cyndi Sloan (1964), Judy Harper (1965), Shari Dukes (1966), Amy Kopfman (1967), Ann Hersland (1968), Randi Roberts (1969), and Janet Grimm (1970). In float compietition, the seniors came in first with the theme Head ' Em Off. Queen Mary Ann reigned over the dance, Autumn Haze, that was held in the cafeteria that evening. Zawodny, queen Mary Ann Loucks, Carolyn Hochmuth, and Betsy Smith, The cast consisted of Ron Fourn.er, Marsha Goettmg, Kevin Kandik, Andy Klein, Bill Orwick, Sue Vick, Doug Lucas, Gayle Stanton, Carol Beaverson, Brent Nicholson, Carol Sinkey, and Jim Paulson. Any Number Can Die With only four weeks of preparation, the Junior Class produced its first play. Any Number Can Die. The twelve cast members made their debut on April second and third, under the direction of Jim Kellet and advi- sors. Miss Mary Sheets and Mrs. Laurina Morrison. The comedy-mystery was a take off of the mystery plays of the late Twenties. Set in 1928, the play involved the recovery of a lost fortune, but took many twists before the for- tune was found. The discovery was delayed by the appearance of a mysterious hooded figure, three ingenious murders, the classic storm, and some unexpected arrivals. Two el- derly detectives set out to solve the case, Hannibal Hix (Brent Nicholson), and Aga- tha Winters (Carol Beaverson). At the con- clusion of the play, they solved the riddle and recovered the fortune behind a secret panel. The culprit, Roger Masters (Andy Klein), was arrested, and the lovers. Carter (Doug Lucas) and Sally (Gayle Stanton) were be- trothed. Cotter Vocational Program marks second year ROW l: Mat Nowakowski, Jerry Kmotorka. Dave Friess, Doug Barris, Gary Sniegowsk,, Doug Deszell. ROW 2: Mark Sherwin, Dave Stravo, Pat Stamm, Bruce Herman, Chris Waitc, and Mark Shafer. Cotter is a vocational school started in Septennber of 1969, because the Toledo Board of Education thought that young men needed training in carpentry, masonry, and industrial maintenance. It is a two year program and the members do the work of an actual apprentice. After graduation they are made apprentices within their area of concentration. Applicants for the program should have an interest in in- dustrial trades, be 16 years of age, have at least a junior class rank in high school, and an accumulation of six credits. Bowsher has 17 students presently attending the school. Juniors attend from 8:35 a.m. till 11:25 and seniors from 12:10 till 2:55 p.m. Gary Sniegowski from Bowsher is the president of the Toledo area seniors attending the school. 230 The prime function of Bowsfier ' s Secret Spirit is to promote school spirit; to get the students to support their school. These Spirits, dressed in silly costumes, take their job very seriously. They work at night making signs and putting them up; supporting athletic con- tests, school programs and activities. The Secret Spirits also recognize outstanding services provided for the school by the administration, the faculty, and the coaching and janitorial staffs. The Society is presently trying to start a Teacher of the Week program to give special attention and recognition to one teacher every week. The society has twelve mem- bers this year. Spirit advisor is Mr. James Vogelsang. Secret Society rouses spirit I All Aboard On board the oceanliner, the S. S. Bess, the 19V1 production of Rehelees took place. Aunt Gertrude (Chavonne Goolsby), Jody (Peggy Rimer), and Beth (Jennie Doriot) were all headed for France to reunite Beth and a childhood playmate, Scotty (Mark Howell). Gertrude had the whole trip planned and was very dismayed when Beth started to show interest in a stowaway on board ship. Not that the stowaway didn ' t care for Beth, but he was also interested in Aunt Gertrude ' s ring. The plot re- volves around the ring, the curse that an old family diary claims is on it, and how the stowaways intend to steal it. Included also for entertainment on the voyage were the talent acts. The junior and senior Rebel- ettes were also in the spotlight. Miss Papps, student director, Eric Enis, and general chairman JoAnne Bailey, helped to obtain a winning performance. The stage technicalities were handled by Mr. James Burns and Russ Miley. . -Tr ) 232 Vml -TTr T ' ■ ' ' - ■ - ■ ' it. Qongs and Qleighbells The first snow of the year arrived just in time for Bowsh- , er ' s annual winter dance, Songs and Sleighbells. Co-spon- ■, sored by the Senior Class and Student-Council, the couples at- tending danced to the music of the Highlighters. Softly lit by candles, the cafeteria was transformed into a winter scene with greens, tinsel, and a sleigh. Debbie Ash was crowned 1971 Snow Queen by last year ' s queen, Cheryl Moan. Included in the court were attendants from each class; Julie Zimmer, freshman; Eileen Perry, soph- omore; Chris Tamlyn, junior; and Nancy Abodeely, senior. Queen Debbie escorted by Tom Aberl, reigned over the dance. 234 No Mother to Guide Her or More to Be Pitied Than Censured SEATED: Brent Nicholson, Carol Bcavcrson, Jackie Tocco, Andy Klein. STANDING: Darrcll Holt, Cay Frobase, Judy Meyer, Steve Starkloff, Becky Day, Rich Lininger, Carol Sinkey, Sandy Youngs, and Chris Rudey. The Senior Class selected a different type of play tfiis year, the first of its kind to be presented on Bowsher ' s stage. The play, No Mother to Guide Her; or More to he Pitied Than Cen- sured, was an oldtime melodrama. Situated in a stately man- sion in the late 1800 ' s, the set was done in rose wallpaper with heavy old-fashioned furniture. The heroine, Becky Day, wore a long, fluffy pinafore and the evil villain, Andy Klein, a long black cape with a scarlet lining in which he cowered when challenged by the hero. Rich Lininger. The two pianos, played by Becky Spoerl and Carol Swift, intensified the mock- serious mood of the play. The melodrama stressed audien participation in the form of booing the villain and cheeri the hero, and the audiences in Bowsher ' s auditorium read: complied. Student director of the play was Jim Kellet, a: the CO- advisors were Miss Mary Jim Sheets and Mrs. Lauri Morrison. 237 ROW 1- Janna Spang Marsha Tillman. Jan Jacobs, Jim Vernier, Joanne Leech. ROW 3: Chris Potts, John Zidarm, Jen Maines, Mike Smith, Ann Frisk, Chavonne Goolsby, Mark Howell, and Cathy Martin. Everybody ' s Crazy Using a futuristic setting, the Junior Class presented Jay Tobias ' Everybody ' s Crazy on February 25 and 26. They moved the play to the year 2252 on the planet Orta. ' To achieve this atmosphere, the set was designed with florescent paint and black lights; the characters wore body stockings, bright imaginative costumes, psychedelic makeup, and space age hairstyles. The play concerned three college students. Herben Stanley (Jay Jakabowski), Tommy Wilkins (Leonard Tolson !. and Elmer Sneed (Mark McGovern), who bought an old hotel and circulated fantastic tales about it to solicit guests. Their stories attracted various types of guests, from a nervous hyp o- chondriac to an old bachelor who had nightmares. Helping shape the play were Student Directors Cathy Max- tin and Mark Howell, advisors Mrs. Laurina Morrison _and Miss Mar ' Jim Sheets, Mrs. Carolyn Goforth, student teach- ers Pat Masters and Mariorie Readinger, and stage crew mem- bers Vince Davis, Chris Potts, and Mike Smith. 239 REBELEE8 1972 What ' s Brewing? The 1972 student production of Rebelees, What ' s Brewing?, became intriguingly complicated, beginning with the en- trance of two young rogues who had been traveling through Europe. Quite by accident, these fellows found themselves in a tangle of events arising from the Keischler Brewing Com- pany — events intertwined with romance and festival excite- ment. Student Director Brent Nicholson, General Chairman Carol Sinkey, and Technical Director Bob Hay were aided by advisors Mr. James Burns and Miss Elizabeth Papps. The 1972 Rebelettes kicked to Applause, and were guided by choreographer Debbie Pierce and her assistant, Bonnie Za- wodny. The Rebels also retained possession of the Drum as the gridders dominated the battle against Start winning 16-7. All City honors went to seniors John Boles, Dan Brown, Mark Albright, Scott Howland, Bob Krist and juniors Jerry Pilewski, Bob Hendricks and Dave Baymiller. Members of the Scholastic Team were seniors John Boles and Mark Al- bright. FRESHMAN AND JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Freshman Football Team under Coach Gil Short ' s leadership held the city championship title for their second consecutive year. The Little Rebels remained undefeated and ran up a 7-0 record. Mr. Short ' s freshman teams have never been defeated in the last two years. The Junior Varsity gridders under Coach Tom Rousch had a trying season after capturing the city championship as freshmen. Several of the losses, however, were decided with only seconds remaining. If the players can rally — next year ' s season should prove more impressive. GIRL ' S VARSITY TENNIS The 1971-72 girl ' s Varsity Tennis Team was lead by the strength of Senior Mary Beth Yosses. The team suffered somewhat however, because of the inexperience of many of its members. The ability of Freshman Ann Wetherill should provide incentive for next year ' s team. VARSITY BASKETBALL Dean Moffett ' s Rebel Roundballers accumulated a total of 3 victories in 17 starts last winter. The young lineup included two sophomores Terry McClean and Kevin Reilly. Mr. Mof- fet hopes the starting sophomores and a strong Junior Varsity team will provide the depth and strength for next year ' s team. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Despite the loss of two players to the varsity squad and nu- merous injuries this season, theJ.V. basketball team posted a 9-8 record. Their experience should enable them to improve the Varsity ' s record next year. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL The Freshman Basketball Team carved out a 5-9 record in the 1971-72 season. Four of their losses, however, were the re- sult of a ten point margin by the opponents. Coach Johnson had a very balanced squad. Startmg different lineups every game, he substituted players freely. The Freshmen also partic- ipated in a tournament at Whitmer losing their second game by only one point in overtime. 286 TENNI9 WRE9TLING Coach Tom Rousch, aided by senior captain Mike Dinardo led the 1971 Rebel netters to a 9-6 record. Craig Christian placed second in the city in second singles. The Rebels dupli- cated their 1970 city league record by again placing fourth. Mike and Craig finished third in the district tournament in doubles. GIRL9 ' BA9KETBALL The 1971-72 Bowsher Grapplers compiled a fine 7-2 record under coaches Schlievert and Flanagan. Their season was highlighted by the first dual meet victory over Rogers in Rebel history. The Rebels finished fourth in the first annual Bowsher Invitational Tournament and also fourth in the City League Tournament. City Championships were won by jun- iors Dave Hendricks and by Sam Rayner. Sam was voted the outstanding wrestler in the city tournament. The 72 season for Girls ' Varsity Basketball proved to be a most exciting year for the young sport. The highlight of the season was the confrontation with Central Catholic High School. After a spirited first half, Central was able to control the ball in the final seconds and squeezed out a narrow victo- ry. The senior captains Jan Mowka and Mary Misavage led the Rebelette Roundballers to a winning season. BA9EBALL Seniors Chris Fisher and Keith Lowe, who led the Rebel baseball team, were also top hitters in the city league. Seven seniors provided experience but with the returning potential of Jeff Kneisley and Paul Jaehn, next year ' s team will hope to better the 9-8 record of the 70-71 season. The three returning pitchers will include the team ' s only seniors Nick LaPorte and John Mandler. TRACK Coach Ron Schlievert ' s Varsity Track Team compiled a 5-2 record in 1971. The Seniors led the team in gaining points as Rob Ludeman received the trophy for most valuable member. A varsity record was set in the 880 yard relay and mile relay by T. Hersland, J. Phillips, R. Ludeman, and K. Pezzin. The 2 mile run record was established by Mark Walton and the 440 yard relay was set by M. Miller, J. Phillips, R. Ludeman, and K. Pezzin. The highlight of the freshman track season was Tom Fauble ' s new record in the 1 mile run. Fauble received a tro- phy for the most valuable freshman. CR099 COUNTRY Underclassmen paced the 1971 harriers to a 6-7 season under first year coach Bob Parks. It was a young team with only two seniors, Tom Trumbull and Les Adams. The leading runners were sophomores Tom Grolle and Tom Fauble. This was a rebuilding year and coach Parks expects a city cham- pionship team in future years. GOLF The 1971 Rebel linksters were led by All-Cir)- members Markjorris (1st team) Chris Flick (2nd team) and Brad Flick (honorable mention). Jorris was the ciry League medalist and received the Mel Woelfling Award as the league ' s outstand- ing golfer. The Golfers finished 3rd in the cit - and 5th in the district as well as compiling an 11-7 season. HOCKEY Even though this is only the second year for the Hockey club, the Rebel icers were successful in creating a dynamic team. The icers showed their strength early in the season and were able to maintain their power. The two senior standouts on the team were Craig Connor and Don Ramsey: Craig Con- nor led the Rebels in goals. 287 288 M i s X v - - . R - m m ; A ' : «- . Bowsher On chis, the tenth anniversary of Bowsher High School it is fitting that we honor a man who has been described as an educa- tional statesman, an astute politician, a man with a wonderful sense of humor, and a man unique in the way he thinks about prob- lems. This man, E. L. Bowsher, served as superintendent of area schools for forty-three years, the last twenty of them in the To- ledo System. In 1958 he resigned as Superintendent here and became secretary-manager of the Toledo Automobile Club. Now re- tired, he has said that his greatest honor came in October, 1962, when this high school was dedicated in his honor. We, too, feel honored in expressing our grateful appreciation to the educator, the statesman, the man. 332 Our library demonstrates good faculr --student and student-faculn,- relations and is one of the most important educational tools here at Bowsher. The librar ' must utilize its even,- resource to keep up with the growing needs of student and faculn- members. The recommendations of the North Central Association this year re- flect this awareness and concern about the future of the library. These recommendations included more space and furniture (i.e. reading, lis- tening and viewing rooms) to accommodate more people, the use of para-professionals to lessen the burden of the librarian, the purchase of text-films and more books, carpeting, light control, and the centraliza- tion of the librar - and audio-visual equipment. It is hoped that these changes would decrease the study hall atmosphere of the library and make it more of an educational media or learning center. 333 Mrs. M. Miller Miss P. Osborn Mrs. L. Some say it offers no really meaningful challenges. No opportunities for individual expression. Law, medicine or the Peace Corps perhaps. But not business. Don ' t you believe it. American business today is a highly demanding institution. With plenty of room for personal contribution and growth. And if you feel strongly about man ' s social responsibility — business offers a unique opportunity for self-expression in this area, too. Most likely you have further schooling ahead of you. But that day of decision on your long-term future is coming sooner than you realize. If when it arrives you ' ve established a record of good grades and participation in extracurricular activities— think seriously about the rewards of a career in business — with us. They form the fabric that protects Apollo space suits from temperature and fire. And Fiberglas reinforcements put strength and durability into a majority of pleasure-boat hulls built today. In fact, it ' s estimated there are more than 33,000 ways Fiberglas materials can profitably replace metals, wood or cloth. They ' re already in many of these uses right now, moving fast into others.
