Smith, Dr. Earle Emme, Dr. Herschel Litherland, Dr. Cecil Rew. Graduate work began at Bowling Green in 1935, when Dr. Clayton Kohl was placed in charge of the new division. At this time the graduate di- vision was regarded as an extension of the three undergraduate colleges. Those departments of- David wohtqgmuth, Date Mcombef, Robert Iaynes. ferinq graduate work from the beginning were Biology, English, Foreign Language, History, Mathematics, and Sociology. Geography offered graduate courses after 1940 and Business Educa- tion began graduate work in 1941, but abandoned it during the war. ln 1945 President Prout created the Graduate School as a fourth major division of the University, with Dr. Emerson Shuck being appointed as Di- rector. The department of Business Education re- sumed its graduate work in 1947, and the depart- ments of Economics, Psychology, and Speech were authorized to offer graduate majors. 1n 1948 the department of Business Administration was added with plans to do graduate work in the fields of Ac- counting, Finance, and Marketing. Graduate reg- istration doubled this year, and further increases are expected.
