W v We 2 THE SPEAKER . . . so nam ed as a living tribute to a revered and service-minded Pike Countian, Champ Clark, who was educatorg attor- neyg State Legislatorg U.S. Congress- man5 and, in 1911, Speaker of the Sixty- second Congress of the United Statesg and who, in the presidential campaign of 1912, led on the first 27 ballots, but failed to muster the necessary two- 'thirds majority and was finally defeated by Woodrow Wilson. 'Though born in Lawrenceburg, Ken- tucky, in 1850, Champ gave himself in :service to the people in this area for 50 years and his funeral and interment were held in Bowling Green, March 2, 1921. Each BCI-IS yearbook bearing the Speaker name tries to render service to the student body and school it represents. 9' X Q Q 'sk' A l- Qvilshnnnlwrrssn-u -va-up eofvqpqgpqgggx -'Qnlsr U r J N .1 ' ff' . ,., . .Mk V , ,, k V . ..- ,A K -X 7' ' A Adfi' ' ' . . ff rg,-ff 'vzf , . The '63-'64 Year Begins Students' programs are pre -planned the year before as far as possible through the school's guidance serviceg however, during the week-long enrollment period, many scheduling problems come to BGHS Principal, George Nienhueser's table, and each one receives serious consideration. The enrollment area was moved from first floor at BGHS to the lower hallway and cafeteria. Enroll- ees started at the east end of the building and worked past check points to the west, getting schedule ap- proval, course cards, locker assignments, activity tickets, yearbooks, etc. Pre-school planners also included PCTA executive committee members who discuss the year's agenda. BGHS growth reflected in longer lines from the first day of enrollment and new teachers really get a workout along with enrollees and parents with more forms to fill in, more papers to read, more stations to pass, more . . . -A 5 ,,,,f- Offering Helping Hands V J A key figure in more ways than one, Mr. Ray Peabody, demonstrates locker-opening technique for unfamiliar fingers. Still smiling, though this is probably the 175th locker fout of the 178 in use at BGHSQ that remained stubbornly shut until Just the right touch was revealed, Mr. Peabody is in his third year on the BCI-IS maintenance staff. is Helping hands work both l, - WHYS. 1 to Smooth the Way 'X fy! With four youngsters of ex, her own, Mrs. Ed Kattleman says, General office L work, school style, was never like this. QSchool style includes such additional activities as motherly application of bandaids, antiseptic, and sympathy, tracking down the strayed, ferrying home the ill, brewing the reviving coffee, and being a discreet message handlery. Wilson came to BGHS as a coach and seventh grade teacher. Since then he has served as a mathematics instructor and a principal. Today he is athletic director of BGHS's Athletic department. His efforts have resulted in a baseball team and intramural program. His basketball teams competed in the Missouri State Tournament in 1947 and 48. We, the Speaker Staff of 1964, respectfully dedicate the 1963-64 Speaker to Coach James A. Wilson for his outstanding service to the Bowling Green High School. 8 i Administration -l-1 Mr. Frank Hom, architect and engineer from AIA and associates, presents building contract to R-1 school board. FFA Reaches New Dimensions In the last three years, FFA membership has risen from 36 to 74--a fact which speaks for itself. Active in school and community affairs, this year's BGHS chapter followed well its own motto: Learning to dog doing to learn, earning to live, living,to serve, sponsoring such activities as Parents' Night, Parent and Son Banquet, Barnwarmin', a turkey shoot, two swine sales, and participating in all local and area contests, sales, and livestock shows. The chapter also provided Christmas trees for BCI-IS and its teachers. New records, awards, ribbons, checks, and trophies were common rewards raked in by the boys pursuing regular supervised programs. One swine sale yeilded a record S8,391.5O, averaging 355.21 per head. Parent 8tSon Banquet numbers, reaching a whopping total this year--244--ate 92 lbs. of ham, then sat back for an intimate and thorough look at the BCI-IS FFA organization. Funds received from homemade candy sales and votes cast fat a penny eachj for tournament queen were turned into good things to eat, decorations, gifts, etc., for the annual athletic banquet planned and sponsored by the squad. Although most of the awards at the banquet go to the boys, letters and bars are presented to those girls who have served their organization faithfully throughout the year. Henderson, Bobcaster Editor We as a nation can give our unlimited support to President Lyndon B. Johnson and help him through his trying period of adjustment. As students we can begin to take stock of ourselves and begin to mold ourselves into better Americans. President Kennedy gave all he could give for his country including his life. ls it too much to ask of us to obey laws, set a desirable example for those who are looking up to us and develop a deeper sense of patriotism for our country... . . There is much we can do if we set before us the example of President John F. Kennedy, his courage, spirit, reverence, and life so freely given that our nation might survive. THE TORCH IS PASSED TO THIS GENERATION--Phyilis Wilhoit, Journalism I Writer Since we are the new generation, the future voters, and active citizens of America, then who but we can re- ceive the torch of human freedom? For the torch is our nation, the symbol of its unity, and if we cannot bear the torch, then the human freedom symbolized by its flame must surely die--and that freedom cannot die if our nation is to exist. Yet, we are not too young, neither are we too weak to bear the responsibility that our freedom gives us. We daily use our privileges, why should we not be responsible for them? Ed. note--these paragraphs are excerpts from editorials appearing in Volume 3, Number 12, THE BOBCASTER, which were later submitted for judging at the district newswriting contests at Kirksville, and won one ratings. They were included with this memorial in keeping with the theme of this book Everything Grows as a glimpse of another kind of growth which took place at BGHS during the past year. 124 Perfect FRESHMEN--ROW 1: P.
