K. Williams, President. Back Row left to right--Claude Shaon, Jack Freeman, Vivian Williams, Vice-President, and Charles Davis. We have six different professions or occupations represented on our school board. They are charged with formulating the policies under which our schools operate. We feel this group has accepted this re- sponsibility and thus provided us with the facilities to attend and gradu- ate from high school. We will always feel grateful to a group that has given their time and energy to our cause. May the cause of education be advanced even more in our community because of a board that keeps the student in mind. This page sponsored by: Healthway Dairy MAC E. The Student Council's first project this year was the sponsoring of the Pep Parade on Nov. Z2 before our Annual Invitational Tourna- ment. We offered prizes to the three best decorated entries in the par- ade. We had eighteen entries with first place going to the Senior Class, the Junior and Freshman Classes tying for second and F.F.A. taking third place honors. Also during the tourney we sponsored an Informa- tion Booth for the benefit of visiting teams. The second project was the Annual Christmas Dance held on December 15 in the Blue Room. This dance was sponsored bythe P. T . A. with the Student Council assisting. The Blue Room was appropriately decorated in green and white with plenty of mistletoe and red holly ber- ries. Soft lights and the wonderful music of Harold Baymiller's Orches- tra ofQuincy completed the picture for this social highlight of the year. One of our new activities this year was the exchange of assembly programs with Louisiana High School. On March 12, we enjoyed their Variety Show very much. On April 2., we had the pleasure of present- ing our B.G.H.S. --T.V. Show at Louisiana. We hope very sincerely that the good will we tried to further between the two schools will be even more encouraged in the coming years. We have several more projects for which the dates have not been set. They are the Annual Spring Dance, The Student Council Trip, and the Rural School Friendship Day. May and Co. , ' v S i HISTORY In the fall of 1949, some 57 students entered the portals of Bow- ling Green High for the first time as Green Freshmen. We freshmen were new and since we didn't understand the rules and regulations, the upper classmen were only too glad to give us a few pointers in the form of an initiation. After we began to see the light and had acquired some knowledge as to our standing in the school, we elected our officers. They were: President--Wiley Marting Vice-President--Eileen Tinsleyg Secretary--Mary Gentryg, and Treasurer--Jean Ann McPike. Our spon- sors for our Freshman year were Mr. W. E. Elmore and Miss Jeanne Dieckerman. We appreciated their help and wise suggestions. The Freshman class was well represented in the extra curriculum and were well represented on the Student Council by Doris Schmidt and Tommy Dempsey. We had for our Penny Carnival candidates: Helen Caldwell and Frank Brown. As a whole our first year was very successful and it was with proud minds that we returned the next fall as full-fledged Soph omores. For our Sophomore year, 54 of the original 57 enrolled and we had the same old gang to share our fun, our work and our school-days. The sponsors this year were Mr. A. E. DeVilbiss and Miss Mary Beth Duncan. We chose our officers which were: Helen Caldwell as Presi- dent, Shirley Moore as Vice-President, Evelyn Conrad as Treasurer and Jo Anne Fitzsimmons as Secretary. Again our class was well rep- resented in social activities and our candidates for the Penny Carnival were Eileen Tinsley and Billy Bob Bouyea. Jean McPike and J. L. Raney were our Student Council :representatives and Jean McPike re- ceived the Sophomore Pilgrimage award as the most outstanding Soph- omore student. We were now wise and finished our second year at B.G. We enrolled for our Junior year 48 strong and then faced the new and various tasks for the Junior class. We elected our officers as fol- lows: Jean McPike as Presidentg Shirley Moore as Vice-President: Shirley Alloway as Secretary, and Eileen Tinsley as Treasurer. We had the same sponsors. One of the greatest tasks we were faced with was a Junior-Senior Banquet and as we made plans for it, we decided to use the Underwater theme. Our Junior play was entitled A Ready-Made Family. The cast included: Jean McPike , J. L. Raney, Mary Brandon, Evelyn Conrad , Betty Howdeshell , Jo Anne Fitzsimmons, Emmett Good- in, Shirley Moore, Russelllsowery and Wiley Martin. Our Penny Car- nival candidates were Wilmer Wendel and Peggy Chamberlain. As we closed our books for the last time that year we realized that we would return as Seniors and the oldest class in school.' Now,for the last and most dear year, the Senior Year. We de- cided to have a Senior trip and started early in the year to save money for this event. We selected Chicago as our destination. We chose our officers and started to work. Our officers were Shirley Moore , Presi- dentg Carolyn Turner , Vice-Presidentg Shirley Alloway. Secretaryg and Peggy Chamberlain as Treasurer. Our class was again well represented inthe activities and we fared well throughout the last year. Our Student This page sponsored by: Pike County Abstract Co. Council representatives were Lorraine Neimeyer and Maurice Gamm, and two of our classmates were elected officers in the Student Council, they were Peggy Chamberlain as President, and Billy Bob Bouyea as Vice-President. As this goes to press we have not yet graduated, but weare looking forward to it and it is with happiness and sorrow that we will march in our caps and gowns to commencement and receive our diplomas thus making us Freshmen again, Freshmen of the world. This page sponsored by: Vandalia Leader and Troy Motor Co PROPHECY As I entered the Gates of Bagdad, I recalled how some ten years ago I had graduated from high school in Bowling Green, Missouri. Mis- souri seemed far away now. I had heard that a few of my former class- mates had come to Bagdad when the tyrant queen, Mattie Qwhobythe way was my former classmate Martha Turpinj had overtaken their homeland. Now where was I? ---- Oh, Yes, entering the gates of the city. As I entered the gates, 1 glanced at the guards and who should I see but two old classmates ,Maurice Gamm and HarryHenrichsen. I talked to them about their families and friends and then proceeded on my way. As I turned into the market place, Inoticed a lovely maiden who looked fami- liar. I went to her market booth and as I approached it, I realized that she was Pat Quade, another of my former classmates. I bought some merchandise from her, then continued on my way. The sun was getting high in the sky sol stopped at a small cafe for a little refreshment. There Inoticed the dancing girls , who were also four former classmates , Kathleen Taylor, Charlotte Pollard, Elizabeth Sprinkle , and Peggy Syrkel. They were entertaining the Prince of Bagdad and I didn't seem important enough to interrupt them at the present time. Ithen seated myself at the nearest table and soon a young lady I had known as Deedie Gayhart came to wait on me. As she left I remembered an article in the CURRYVILLE PRESS about Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reading going to Bagdad. As I started to partake of my meal, I felt a slight jostle and then grabbed the hands of the sly winch who was trying to relieve me of my purse. Why, Retta Wilkins , I cried when I saw my thief. Oh, I am sorry, she said, I didn't recognize you. I came to find out that she had had a hard life since her brother had disinherited her in his will and she had had to steal for a living. I gave her a few pieces of silver and then started again on my way. As I tried to leave, the host of this fine establishment started my way and then I recognized him as Murray England who now was known as Ali Ben Haga, but he said for me to keep his idenity a secret because ofthe consequences if it was to be found out that he was an American citizen. As Ijourneyed down the street I no- ticed a fortune-teller's booth and since I am a mystice person I pro- ceeded to have my fortune told. The lady CMadame Zena, was none oth- er than Wanda Moore and her two lovely assistants were Norma Ruther- ford and Carolyn Turner. As my past is bad and my future less prom- ising I shall not disclose my fortune, but continue on my journey. I proceeded to the show of the Emir who was known as Billy Bob Bouyea. His show was outstanding and very entertaining. His dancing girls were: Jean McPike, Peggy Chamberlain, .Io Anne Fitzsimmons, and Helen Caldwell. The next act I beheld was that of an Egyptian sword- swallower, Billy Feather, in person. I went back-stage after the show and asked Billy about his profession and he said it wasn't dangerous -----just ticklish. I tried to leave, but to my surprise I found that you were to pay 15 dunars when you entered and since I had not, I could not leave because the big man who blocked my path was the official-bouncer, Emmett Goodin. All my classmates have surely come to Bagdad. As I proceeded down the market street after paying my fee , I noticed Wilmer Wendel who was now a snake charmer. He had quite a large crowd watching him, and in it I noticed two former classmates , Jimmy Clausen This page sponsored by: Harlinger and Son Appliances and Billy Edwards who were trying to teach the people a few Hindu rope tricks. As Istarted for my hotel, I saw a small child sitting by the doorway of a sweet shop. I asked the boy his name and found him to be the child of my fformer classmate, J. L. Raney. Ithen proceeded on my way and when I reached my hotel room, just as I was preparing to rest I heard the loudest and longest scream I had ever heard in my life. Ithought that someone was being killed and rushed to find the victim. But I discovered a hysterical, Mary Greene crying over her small child who had gotten caught in the elevator between the 3rd and 4th floors. I located the elevator boy who turned out to be Tommy Ogden, and then left him to the task of returning the boy, I packed my clothes and started out of the hotel afraid of any further interruptions. I decided then and there to get the next ship home. As I left the city gates, Inoticed the graveyard bythe side of the road ,and there I stopped for a few minutes where Inoticed a grave marked Velma Graver--Born 1933--Died 1961. As I investigated Ifound that five more of my classmates, Emma Bowen, Mary Gentry, Glenn Henderson, Emma Patrick, and Margie Kerr, were buried there. Ipaused for a moment in memory of these friends and then hurried on to the sea-port. As I neared the dock, I saw an old woman selling wares who I believed to be Dorothy Atkinson, but since I would miss my ship if I stopped, Ihurried on. As I went up the gang- plank, a young man took my bags. He was none other than Frank Brown, an old classmate, and he said that the captain of the ship was another classmate, Jimmy Nolan, and that Tommy Dempsey, who was now the marajah of Melsone, was on board and with him was his harem which included Dorothy Cullop, Mary Lou Graver, Juanita Ard , Shirley Allo- way, and Lorraine Neimeyer. These people were all old classmates and I was looking forward to meeting them and discuss old times. As I sat in my deck cha-ir reading the paper from London, England, I noticed where a famous English philosopher, Evelyn Conrad, had received the Pultzier Prize for her novel. I remembered Evelyn and thought how fine it was that she was still at the head of the list of old classmates in ability and wit. As I proceeded to read my paper, a woman who was dressed in the finest of materials and who had three maids with her, came up on deck. I found from one of her maids who was also Ameri- can, that she was the richest passenger on board and that before she received her title as Princess, she was known as Mary Brandon. As the ship rocked, I awoke with a start, I had fallen out of my bed instead of my chair and all this was just a silly dream instead of the real truth. This page sponsored by: P. N. Peggy Joyce Chamberlain was elected Secretary and Treasurer. The Pep Squad kept the same uniforms this year that they had last year. The leaders varied their uniforms, alternating in wearing black letter sweaters and red pullover sweaters every other game. In order to finance our trips to out of town games and tourna- ments, we sponsored a tournament queen during our Annual Thanksgiv- ing Tournament, and had a pep squad benefit basketball game and two food sales. We can honestly state that our 1951-52. Pep Squad was the most cooperative group we have ever handled. In fact this year's Peppers established a new attendance record. We wishto express our sincere thanks to T. C. Wells, our spon- sor and Mrs. V. S. Williams. Mrs. H. D. Petrie, and Mrs. Glenn Elder for making it possible for us to attend all of our out of town games and tournaments . This page sponsored by: Times Printing Co. Our outstanding accomplishment of the year is the prospect of finishing our second year Latin Book. The other activity was the purchase of Latin Pins by a majority of the members. We all have enjoyed a very successful and educational term with Miss Bankhead and some of us regret to see it end. We also encourage the students who will be Sophomores and Juniors to take this course. We think they will find it very interesting. Senora Blanco Green, native of Guatemala, was our guest and brought handmade articles from her homeland. JoyAnn Gentry was our hostess. At Christmas we had a dinner at Carol Petrie's home. The eve- ning was completed with charades, spin the bottle , and snowball fights. Both Gentry's and Petrie's record players suffered fromthe convulsions of the record riots. Other programs have featured tourists , who have been to Mexico and Spain, games played in Spanish, and refreshments furnished by the club members. The school provided us with an album ofSpanish records consist- ing of Spanish conversation and songs. Our senior member of the club, Miss Childers, refereed our classes and club meetings. Being our teacher it was her duty to attend our activities, so we found it necessary to invite her. We hope we will have just as much fun next year and win a prize in the homecoming parade. The 1952 Speaker is different. A new type of cover has been selected and inside it you find a bigger and better yearbook than ever before. There is a very large selection of snapshots, always a. favorite feature, and all material has been ar- ranged to make it as interesting as possible. There are pictures of all our extra-curricular activities: Sports, band, the basketball banquet, the Christmas dance, the Jr. and Sr. plays, freshman initiation, etc., and our various clubs: Home Ec, Vocational Agriculture, Pep Squad, Latin Club, and Spanish Club. The Bobcat Tales is the bi-weekly publication of Bowling Green High School. The paper is published and sponsored bythe Senior Class. The paper contains news of school sports, contests, current happenings, a little good natured chatter, and lately has featured some particular department of our school. We have also printed some of the writings of our own students, particularly from the Junior English class during their newspaper study. I think as a whole the active staff members have enjoyed work- ing on the paper and we hope the student body has enjoyed it as much as we have. This page sponsored by: Moss Oil Company SPEAKER STAFF BOB CAT TALES STAFF This page sponsored by: Nunns Plumbing Left to Right: Walter Hiles, Virgil Smith, Gene Spyers, Sam Chamberlain, Robert Colbert. These five men transport a big percentage of our students and can be depended upon to get them to school and back home safely and on time in the majority of cases. Due to icy or snowy weather, there were a few days they didn't attempt to go on their regular routes. Some of the buses transport students who live as much as 30 miles from school Walter Hiles is employed full-time and maintains and repairs the buses.
