Probably the biggest club event was the Bobcat Carnival, sponsored by the Stue dent Council. Each club had some kind of booth or activity which served the dual purpose of raising money for the organization and providing entertain- ment for the student body. In addition to the Carnival, Student Council again sponsored Homecoming, Pep Week, the Food Drive, and a Student Forum, Of course, the concession stand was open to satisfy the hungry students with candy, chips, pop, and other goodies, lt was also an exciting year for our nurses, home- makers, and farmers who worked hard on different proiects and celebrated the end of the year with a banquet. Many clubs also engaged in travel as the Future Farmers went to Kansas City and the Spanish and French Clubs planned summer trips to Europe. As a humorous source of entertainment, the Drama Club presented two comedies, You Can't Take It With You and Life With Father. To keep the school informed on these activities and others, the Scarlet Parrot staff published the school paper every two weeks. The spirit was high, the time was right, and the clubs took advantage of this by making the past year a very successful one. , .. ' ,',..r W ,Mr 95 fi' 3 M AWN Xe K s vi 'E i Q .. Junior High records were quite impressive and several very fine athletes are expected from This group inthe near future. Only Three ofthe seven teams at B.G.H.S. finished with winning records. The football squad posted a fine Though not overly consistent, 5 and 4 record during Their season as many individual awards were given. Next year, The Bobcats enter The ruggecl G.L.L. and Things should prove exciting. The cross-country improved on Their previous years record with a 5 and 4 slate, allowing Coach Ott to close a great career on a winning note. With only Two return- ing lettermen, help is expected from incoming sopho- mores. The T968-69 edition of The Basketball team Turned in one of The finest performances in B.G. history. Their l 7-5 record and second place finish in The G.l..L. was more than anyone expected. Doug Joyce led The cagers in breaking several school records and being named one on The honorable mention All-American squad. This is one team who'se act will be hard to follow. High hopes were pinned upon the wrestling squad this year. Though they Ugrappled' with a few problems in the early season, they took downi' a respectable 4-6 record by the seasons completion. With several return- ing lettermen, next year should be an improvement. The baseball squad did not quite meet their pre-season expectations under new coach Bill Burkle, though their 6-8 record did not depict their extreme determination. The loss of lO lettermen leaves a Tough road ahead. The Traclc squad managed only one victory this year as coach Bill Croft has some rebuilding To do. With the loss of only 3 men, however, next year should be a big suc- cess. The golf squad had many a l'iolly moment under their new Grimm coach. The Team loses A lettermen from a team that posted a 9-l O record lthe best of the spring sports, we might addl. With the return of many swing- ers next year, the golf 'lclubu looks anything but green. IT has been an elevating year for sports at B.G.H.S., ancl no one can deny The many thrills which were provid- ed. Next year B.G. becomes a full-fledged member of the G.L.L. With improvement and the aid of sophomores, a parade of champions may appear at Bowling Green. The boys worked hard and developed pride in themselves and in our team. With these words, Coach Stu Stearns summed up the Bobcats T968 football season. With hustle and desire the team fought their way to a respectable 5-4 record. The Bobcats featured a fine aerial attack and a hard-hitting running game which, when put together, proved to be disastrous for many opponents. The defense was iust as important and just as hard-hitting. Led by middle guard, Ron Davis lM.V.P. and best line- man award winnerl, the Cats held their oppo- nents to a limited number of scores. The defense showed their ability by holding a powerful Na- poleon team to six points. This would have to be classified as the highlight of the season as B.G.H.S. rose to a T4-6 victory. In the post-season picks for the All-G.L.L. teams, the Bobcats fared well. Doug Joyce was selected on the lst team, while Ron Davis and Don Nickey received 2nd team honors. Bobcat harriers lead the pack. the harriers take to the route. This year's Bowling Green Cross Country squad, led by tri-captains Bill Lanning, Dave Moon, and Ken Bowers, and returning lettermen, Bob Jackson and Al Rendina, marched into the l968 season determined to better the disappointing 4-5 record estab- lished the previous season. The team's pride and will to work paid off as they finished with a winning 5-4 mark. The Bobcats ended up third in the Great Lakes League and came in third in the district meet at Lima. Coach Warren Ott stated that they were a much improved team, and that the rec- ord will continue to improve if the boys work as hard as they did this year. John T. Hayes and Gary Waltrip were elected co-captains for the T969 season and will be backed by the return ot two lettermen. Coach Warren Ott looks over the course before Bill Lanning strains os he reaches the finish line. Spirit ron high this year for Cross Country Basketball The l968-69 Basketball team at B.G,l-l.S. was very successful. The team came within one game of tying the record for most games won in a season. They also finished in a tie for second place in the Great Lake League, which is quite an accomplish- ment since this was the High Schools first year in the league. The squad was able to pullout the close ball games, winning four by as few as six points. Doug Joyce came through to score the winning basket in three games. Doug had a fine senior year as he led the team in scoring for the second straight year. Denny Smith led the team in rebounding for the second consecutive year. The Bobcats seemed to have all their luck fall at the end of the year as Marty Smith fractured his right hand in practice and Gus Sonnenberg twisted his knee in the last regular season game. But against these odds the Bobcats won three tournament games before los- ing to a fine Sandusky squad. Coach Gwin carried nine seniors and three jun- iors on the varsity with Bill Miller being the only iunior to letter, So l969-70 may be a rebuilding year, but with the help of the six iuniors who played iunior varsity, the 69-70 campaign may be a fine one, .,,A W FH. The season was marked with great improvement from start to finish and since the team was basically composed of un- derclassmen, the year would have to be classi- tied as a rebuilding one. Future hopes tor continuing success were strengthened by the addition of Mr. Bill Burkel to the coaching statt. Coach DeFrench was also encouraged by the large number of sophomores who participated in the wrestling program. With the added depth ot these boys, the team should be even stronger. At the Winter Sports Banquet, iunior Tom Hall was named the team's MVW and was awarded for having secured the most take- downs. Track B.G.l l.S. pole-vaulters Terry Dewyer, Tom Beattie, and Tom Stout came down from their elevating heights for a picture. 88 COACH WILLIAM CROFT In order to have a good track squad a team must have depth. Bowling Green High School did not have the depth needed by a track team so their season was not a success. The track- sters posted a l-7 record and finished last in the G.L.L. meet. One major problem was the lack of senior track members. The team only had 4 senior members and most track teams have from 15 to 20 seniors. Coach Croft has done a fine job in developing some iun- ior trackmen. And if these boys con- tinue to improve and work during the summer track fortunes should be bright- er at B.G.H.S. in the next coming years. ..hk , Q if ' A-f-' P :J,, ' N W tssi 5- f it 1 1 A K -. The Bobcats ended up winning six and losing eight. Much of the problem was adiusting to new head coach, Bill Burkle. The Baseball squad could not seem to win the close ball games. Of the eight losses, five were by one run and four of those five were last inning ball games. Bowling Green lost their first tournament game to Springfield l-O. lt was a game that Springfield scored in the last innning. Bowling Green had experience at every position but they could not put a lineup together that ielled. The squad contained ten seniors, all of whom started at one time or another. This may be a sign that things will be rough next year, since only five lettermen will return. But the 'Cats will have a strong pitching staff and good solid catchers. One weak spot may be first base, a position Denny Smith held down for four years, three at Bowling Green and one at Westwood. All in all, it should be an interesting l97O campaign.
