Meet those deadlines! This was the futile cry of the advisor, Mr. Bill Gibbon, to the 57-58 Hi Echo staff. Though the Work Was hard and the going rough, the staff tried as hard as possible to get out a good yearbook. There were pictures to take, copy to Write, proofs to read and layouts to figure. All of these things required many after-school hours and summer Work. After the plans were made the staff took the pictures and wrote the stories. The 57-58 staff consisted of: Sara Epke and Janey Hentges, layouts and musicg LaVeta Luce, junior highg Marcia Merrill, organizations and photography: Barb Lam- bert, art editorg Pat Lambert, copy and fa- culty, Daryl Habel and Bill Janney, sports, Mary Jo Isch, girl's sports. Assistance was given by Lynn Scott and Joyce Walker. ' lid un Taking advertisements. HI-ECHO BUSINESS STAFF Getting advertisements Was the primary concern of the Hi Echo business staff. This staff had to sell the ads, get the ad copy, and see that it was sent in properly to the printer. They also had to sell the books, keep the sub- scription records, and see that everyone gets his book. They must bank all money and see that the printing and engraving bills are paid. They must also order the covers and handle all other business matters. FIRST ROW: Kaye Kline, Wendy Bosidorf. Ian Groscop. lackie Iune, Barbara Neitz. Sally Mannhardi. Its staff con- sisted of the members of the Journalism cl a s s and the teacher, Mr. William Gibbon. In the fall the class met for the first time, and within three weeks they were print- ing a school newspaper. At first, the going was rough, but by the end of the year all of the students could do what was expected of them. The paper had four pages. Page one was for newsg two for society, clubs, and editor- ialsg three for sportsg and four for the junior high news. For the first time in many years, the staff did not use the rotation method, wherein each person would hold a different job every week. These jobs ranged from editor to proof r e a d e r. Diane Mengerink headed the staff as editor, aided by Tom Markey as her managing editor. This year, as in years past, the Scarlet Parrot was award- ed a superior rating at the Northwestern Ohio Journa- lism Day at BGSU. SEATED: Bernard Krauss. Daryl Habel. Sally Musser. Tom Markey. Functioning as the largest club of BGHS, the Girl's Athletic Association spent an ex- tremely active year. The biggest event this organization spon- sored was the water show, Aqua Holidavf' which was directed by Mrs. O'Janpa. This spectacular show was presented at the Uni- versity Natatorium to a crowd that overflow- ed the pool's seating capacity. Mrs. O'J., as she was known by the stu- dents, took Miss Jisa's place while she was away at college working on her Master's degree. Miss Jisa came back at the beginning of the second semester. Under the direction of Mrs. O'Janpa, the GAA girls spent many happy hours in mo- dern dancing, hockey, speedball, and Volley- ball, plus a sport in its first year as a BGHS activity-bowling. After the return of Miss Jisa we took up the most popular girl's sport of this school, which is basketball. Three all-star basket- ball teams were chosen at the end of the season to play schools of the surrounding area. To end the year, the girls took up various spring sports including tennis, badminton, ping-pong, archery, and softball. Also, the girls had their annual semi- formal dance, welcome sophomore party, slumber party, banquet, play-days, and an overnite excursion. Manv girls worked long and hard to earn their letters and pins which were presented to them at the banquet. Girl athletes in action! March was a busy month, for the choir traveled to Perrys- burg to present an assembly, and a week later attended the District Choral Audi- tion at Napoleon. As a result of many hours of practice, this year's chorus received a superior rating in both the district and state contests. In May the band and chorus presented their annual concert. The year's events were culminated for chorus when it sang at baccalaureate and commencement. Bowling Green High School is proud of its choir, and, even more so, of their director, by far one of the finest in the state. Some of the soloists for the choir this year were: Ianey Hentges, Marianne Green, Sherry Raidy, Toni Pastorek, and Win- ston Richard. w Sh if 5, tl W V E. Only yesterday, we were still enclosed by the four walls of our alma mater. Today we are free. An account of Senior Day activities might read something like this: Walbridge Park, here we come! The bus ride, although a bit on the bumpy side, did little to dampen our spirits as We, the Class of '58, overran the zoo and park grounds. The animals took great care to act as undisturbed as possible, but were probab- ly thinking, Oh no, not another BGHS sen- ior group. We Went through all this last year. A faculty served picnic was given at noon after a morning of boating and canoeing and all the seniors were filled with potato salad, baked beans, ham sandwiches, relishes, milk, potato chips and ice cream. The kids played football and softball, Went to the zoo, and just generally goofed around. After a rough day, both for us and the park, the buses brought us back to the friendly confines of Bowling Green completely sunburned, ex- hausted and happy. W 41 Q gs! At the head table were Mr. and Mrs. Bowmang Mr. and Mrs. Parlette, Tom Markey, Winston Richards, Shad Hanna, Barb Lambert, Barb Doane, Judy Herbert, Dave Young, and Judy Perry. After the awards Shad Hanna gave a farewell speech and the banquet closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and our Alma Mater. 6:00 I-LM. - Leaving for Cleveland. X Six a.m. already. lt can't be. I know there's a bus there somewhere. As soon as we open our eyes we'll find it. Forty-six seniors and chaperones boarded the Grey- hound bus at Green Gables. Off we went to tour Cleveland. The chaperones were Mr. James Merrill and Mrs. Marcella Wohler. The bus went on the Ohio Turnpike to Cleve- land and there the seniors scattered in forty- six directions. On the tour of the town, they bought souvenirs and ate lunch. The group then met at 1 :OO p.m. and went to the Palace Theater to view the cinerama production of The Seven Wonders .of the World . At 5:00 we went to the great amusement park, Euclid Beach, where we celebrated until we were almost sick. The seniors rode the roller coasters, bumper cars, rockets, etc. We also ate, toured the penny arcade and went through the fun houses. The bus left Euclid Beach full of tired and worn-out seniors to arrive in Bowling Green again at midnight. Mr. Iames Merrill and Mrs. Marcella Wohler were our chaperones cmd lots of fun JUNIOR- SENIOR PROM . , 'tm .y x Heal ,. ,,,.., . if . i - .- . u.
