The people of the United States, educators and par- ents, have an unbounded faith in the benefits, both to the public group and to the individual, of more education for an ever increasing proportion of youth. Our Com unity Unit is certainly an upward extension of secondary education. The board of education, superintendent, principals, and teachers who are vitally interested in the needs, functions and re- sults of the teaching process, have only one aim in mind. That is, working in harmony with parents in molding well adjusted, happy, and valuable citizens of tomorrow. It is both a privilege and pleasure to be associated de superin- tendent of such an institution which is striving to meet the educa- tional needs of the community. The class of 1956, physically fit and mentally alert, may well represent the American school system as they take their places as adults in the world of today. The effect of this is both amazing and satisfying. Evidence of serious thinking, an inquiring mind, style of self-expression, knowledge and understanding, are but a few of the assets which these young people of today posess, and which come to light during these interviews. These many fine attrib- utes speak well for these students and the caliber of training they are receiving. They reflect credit of the finest type upon the many fine teachers and parents who, together, have produced these intelligent and alert young men and women with the funda- mentals which will enable them to take their places in society as useful, productive citizens, a credit to their home, their school, and their community. It is indeed a pleasure to he a part of an institution which is rendering such a worthwhile service to the com unity which it serves. The class of 1956 may proudly take its place in the long list of illustrious classes which have preceded it. SADMJ 1 GEORGE E. DAVIS 11959-19567 Principal, Business Ed. But we are anticipating several things, among them being the Junior-Senior Prom, graduation, and a Senior trip.A Also, we can look back at our many pleasant experiences of the year, a Senior Variety Show, Senior Play, a Christmas Ball, and others. We chose our class colors, which were lavender and white, and our flower is a lavender carnation. Our Senior officers are: President-Kent Dittmerg Vice-Pres- ident-Russell Schochg Secretary-Beulah Barrigarg Treasurer-Marilyn Andrewg Reporter-Roberta willardg and our sponsors are Mr. and Mrs. George Davis. At the beginning of this last year, we had five members less than when we were Juniors. Those who left us were: Gerry Carr, who joined the Air Force: Robert Phillips, who is now a Senior at Mendong Marjorie Graham, a Senior at Macomb High: Bill Welch, a Senior at Carthage Highg and Eulah Barrigar who married Robert Strong of Keithsburg. Some of us have been classmates all during our school years. Samm Ramsey and william Corse have gone to Bowen all twelve years and Ina Carol James and Adeline Rosendale attended Rosehill School for three years and the other nine at Bowen. Also, Beulah Earrigar and Max Scott attended five years at Clayton and seven at Bowen. As thirty-five eager Freshmen, we had one consolation in the fact that we were the largest class in school, which helped us set a record of twenty tubes of lipstick used in our Indian style iniation. We soon became used to our new surroundings and started into high school activ- ities, electing as our first President, Eulah Barrigar. We were very proud to have originated our annual Variety Show which has proved to be very successful and provided lots of fun and work. Other activities were F.H.A., F.F.A., G.A.O., and our Girls Ensemble was formed. In our Sophomore year, thirty-four members answered roll call, with Alvie Gardner going to Fort Madison, Jimmy Elder joining the Air Force, and Sandra Vest getting married. The latter part of the year we gained one member, Russell Davidson. Earlene Nichols was our Sophomore President and some of our Sophomores helped form a Pep Club which we needed to help cheer our basketball squad on to a position in the Sweet Sixteen. We had an extra feeling of pride because one of our classmates, Bill Welch, who helped us gain this honor, was on this squad. Our Junior year was a busy one with the loss of another of our classmates, David Tanner, and the addition of a new member, Russell Schoch. Also, Earlene Nichols and Shirley Homan were married. we were happy to receive our classrings on January fifteenth. Under the direction of Mrs. Avis Preyt, we presented our Junior Play, nSeventeen is Te1rific.' The play cast was: Gerry Carr, Sharon Carr, Charles Bennett, Roberta Willard, Samm Ramsey, Ina Carol James, Cheryl Cramer, Dora Mae Junk, Kay Webster, Max Scott, Shirley Scheuermann, and Harold Veach. we worked hard on the Junior-Senior Prom choosing as a theme Nhoonlight and Roses.n Our work was rewarded with a successful prom. These are the statistics for the class of '5o, they list some of the concrete accomplish- ments of an active class. And perhaps they hint at the more importantintangiablethingsg the satisfaction of putting together and giving a play yourselves, or the thrill of cheering a great ball team to the top and just as important the heartbreak with them when the odds become insur- mountable as they usually do if you go far enoughg there are the many friendships with your classmates and teachers, gthen there is the feeling of getting up before your schoolmates to receive your medal for practicing a song until you're scared to death and singing it better than you thought you could, and of'course your encounter with the world of books and knowledge often delightful, sometimes frightening but always a challenge. These are the things you remember which is as it should be, because they were our high school days. And now as we are getting ready to leave dear old Bowen High, we would like to leave you with our motto which is: WOut of School Life, Into L1fe's School.n ,I T '3-g lg- glllly' 4, Egiv, 'Fl' !E:I,1llllY -iiiiji: in gee Indeed! -' 'I F - Th e S enlors of 1956 have made lusioq -. 1 C' H I A fm ssfs?5 5, '- -U 4 .7' 54? -' J Cl 770, Q 9? as r- wr!! w. At this job we're not so grand But we think you'll understand. Charles Bennett is the first in line To many girls he seems real fine, With Chuck and his Buick and his PTOPBCBIIGI. He makes it to Chatton to pick up Sandra. Here comes someone who is a little slow But in his Pontiac he really does go. On the basketball floor he hits the hoop He's Jim Jacobs, known as 'Spook'. Now here is Beulah Barrigar Some people think she is quite a character, Among them she has chosen to pick A certain boy by the name of Dick. Bill Corse is next in line He thinks athletics are really fine, On the track he burns up the road And always with him is his friend, Toad. In his car of blue and white He keeps going both day and night. To the teachers he's quite a pest Now you know it's Ronnie Vest. This guy's name is Harold Veach By his friends he's known as 'Screech'. He's always willing to give a ride But he's happier when wilma's at his side. He's always with his friend Don Totsch About the Phillies he does boast. when girls are around yelling for more You can guess that its for Jim Orr. Now we have Russell Davidson And the many things he has done. In his Cbevvy he's never a coward, when he's headed to Augusta to see Fonda Howard. Sam Ramsey is the girls delight It makes no d fferenoe day or night. At singing he does his very best It makes no difference what the test. Kay Webster is our next little gal To everyone she's a real pal. 5he's cute we've heard it said Though while cheering her face turns red. Dick Myers is in the F.F.A. He's sure to make his farming pay, He is really the studious type His hogs and cattle he does like. Marilyn Barber, slender and shy Works and studies as time goes by. Her Mom is the F.H.A. Mother A better gal you'1l never discover. Sh1rleyScheuernannis lots of fun She always keeps Lawrencey on the run. 'Get Serious' is her favorite slang It always goes over with a bang. eva . The next girl is Cheryl Cramer When Dannie's around she's never tamer She is really an all-round gal To Ina Carol she's a real pal. Adeline Rosendale is the only blonde Of Denver she is real fond. All the sports she really likes Including the G..A.0. hikes. Marilyn Andrew is the quiet type A special neighbor she does like, She never brags, boasts, or complains On her horse she handles the reins. This girl is the bashful kind A better friend you'll never find. Shirley Flesner will never shirk When it comes to all the work. Dora Mae Junk we've heard is quite a f She likes to play duets with her frien She sometimes thinks Buicks are nice But poor old Chuck says No Dice . Lawrence Ridings is Shirley's man He drives his car like nohody oan College bound is he next year We'll sure miss his laugh and cheer. Roberta Qlillard is always neat As a worker she can'ii beat. SENIOR C ASS WILL we the class of 1956, of BCHS of the city of Bowen, State of Illinois, United States of America, in twenty-six individual and distinct parts, being about to pass out of this sphere of education, in full possession of a crammed mind, well trained memory and almost super-human understanding, do make and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills or promises by us at anytime hithertofore made, or mayhap, carelessly spoken, one to the other, as the thoughtless wish of an idle hour. And first we do direct that our funeral services shall be conducted by our friends and well Wishers. OUP superintendent, principal, and their wise and ever competent faculty who have been one guardian for so long, only asking 33 the last injunction of the dying, that the funeral be carried on with all the dignity and pomp that our worth, our merit, our attainments and as sen- iors of 'grave and reverend mien,' must certainly have deserned. And to such estate as it has pleased the fates and our strong hands and brains to win for us, we do dispose of the same as follows: Item--We will and bequeath to our beloved faculty all the amazing knowledge and startling information that we have furnished them from time to time in our various examination papers. Item--We will and bequeath to the High School the athletics and honors which our members have so nobly won. Item--The following may seem trifling bequests, but we hope that they may be accepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away because we can no longer keep them, but as valuable assets to those who may receive them, and a continual reminder of our generosity of heart dis- played in our free and full bestowal. You have four curly headed dots and dashes running around the house, haven't you? Cheryl Cramer is now married to Danny Peterson, the professional baseball player so she has been able to tour the country. When his team played at the Bowen Stadium she told me of the fate of our Class of '56. Marilyn Andrew developed her interest in horses and bought a stable in Kentucky so now she has a horse entered in the Kentucky Derby. Harold Screech Veach, broken hearted from losing Wilma to another, decided to be a thirty year man in the Army. He has served fifteen of those years and has worked his way up to Private First-Class. Marilyn Barber, after graduating from Gem City, became private secretary to the President of the United States, who is Kent Dittmer. Remember the blind date Kent had his Senior year? His eyes were finally opened and he made her first lady. Ina Carol James finally settled in Colusa. Since her interests were twins for several years she now has outstanding twin square dancers as well as grand champion cattle. Sam Ramsey went to Minnesota to further his education in music but froze out so now he and Sandra run the Comercial Hotel in Bowen. His musical ability is paying off, for he sings his fourteen kids to sleep to keep them from disturbing the guests. Since Roberta Willard always had a love for children she has replaced Miss Frances on Ding Dong School. Dick Myers and Russell Davidson went into a partnership on a farm. Dick married Lulu but Russell has reconciled himself to be a confirmed bachelor. When Cheryl went on a shopping spree in New York she bought a hat at F1esner's Fashions. Guess who the designer was? That's right. Shirley Flesner. Jim Jacobs, whose nickname used to be Spook , is now known as Digger , as he is the friendly undertaker. His parlor is called Doo Drop Inn. Adeline Rosendale always loved to drive so much, she is now driving a hearse for Digger. Max Scott had a sensational idea. He moved to France and feeds his cows grapes. I guess he has the biggest wine dairy in the world. A year after graduating Jim Orr married a five foot ten blonde from New York. He has a basketball team and a little cheerleader of his own now. I read where Dora Mae Junk, who runs Dora's Candy Store as a front, was arrested for being a bookie. Her only excuse was she was helping out a friend, Marilyn Andrew. Ronnie Vest is now recuperating in the hospital as his stock car piled up in a recent race. I doubt if he will ever leave the hospital though, as he has found a cute nurse. Sharon Carr has set up house keeping in Greenland with Jack, a young Air Forpe man she corresponded with while in school. Bill Corse became a Private Eye and has offices in Chatton, Chili, and Big Neck. Charles Henry Bennett, III, being very versatile, has become a termite exterminator, an auctioneer, a Ford salesman, and various other things. Russell Schoch, after serving his term in the Army became a drummer. He now plays drums in his own band with monogrammed drum sticks. Kay Webster is still in Chili, and I'm sorry to say, she's a widow, but a rich one, with three darling little boys. As for Mary Ann Strickler, she has a patent CPattonD on 'Davey' and has settled down to a blissful marriage. You remember Dick Spalding? I twisted his arms Call four of theml and finally talked him into marriage. He is radio announcer over CABK. I continued my writing by writing up the market report for him. I really must go now. I'm so confused, I don't know if hogs are up or down. The two lead- ing hitters for Bowen were Hartley with .370 and Corse with .3o8. The line up consisted of Scott- pitcher, Nichols-catcher, Hartley-lb, Randolph-Zb, Corse-ss, Orr-3b, Bennett and Hogan-lf, Webster- cf, Ridings and Crear-rf. Liberty l Then we traveled to Plymouth and were unable to rattle the bats as we were shut out. Bowen came back to lose to Augusta as the defense fell through. Bowen played their best game of the year when they beat Central 1-O. Max Scott pitched a beautiful game with Bowen getting their lone run in the 7th inning on a hit and run play where Hogan hit a double to score Scott all the way from first base. Liberty came next and Bowen won 3-1. It was too good to be true as Ply- mouth wallopped us 12-I+. We got another winning streak going, taking two from Colusa. After about a week layoff we traveled to Liberty and suffered our fifth defeat. We are looking forward to a much better Spring season. . .,-,. ,-,...l..,,ll.,, ....- .., , I..
