First Grade Learns Five Senses The first grade class has enjoyed learning about the 5 senses of the brain. The children tried to read a primer in braille and learned how difficult it was to walk around without sight, (they were blindfolded); they listened for sounds, they felt things with their hands; they tasted and smelled many different items. Justin Bieber. Gary Grismer. Mark Beitelspacher, Joel Haar. Kindergarten Masters Alphabet The Kindergarten Class enjoyed working in the letterbooks. Letterbooks corrolate reading, handwriting, listening and oral language skills. The students learned about the alphabet: the letter names, how to write them, what sounds they represent and what function they serve as they are blended to form words. Third Fourth Visit Decotah Museum Third and Fourth Grade participated in a very special event. They journeyed to Aberdeen and spent the day at the Dacotah Prairie Museum. At the museum the children used museum artifacts to dip candles, make butter, dye yarn, grind coffee, stitch a quilt, use a washboard, using homemade soap, iron with a flatiron, and visited a General Store where they purchased penny candy. Second Grade Experiences Pioneer Life Second Grade has been introduced to the harshness of pioneer life by listening while the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House books were read to them. They have tried their hand at carding wool on a carding loom just as mentioned in Laura’s books. By year’s end the students were accomplished writers as they had faithfully worked on cursive writing. Several plays had been performed for other classes by the reading classes. Second Graders learned many new skills and broadened those learned in previous grades as they became very independent workers.
