Eighth Grade Is Moving Along The Seventh and Eighth Grades combined? They said it wouldn 't work—but we did it!! Maintaining class spirit'' yet living (almost) in harmony with another class calls for a delicate balance. This challenge was successfully met by a very special group of seventh and eighth graders who learned not only the traditional 3 R's but also two additional R’s: responsi- bility and respect for self and oth- ers—both vital ingredients for successful students and a suc- cessful class. These changes include more homework, varsity band and chorus, and being in a combined class with the eighth grade. The seventh graders enjoy being in ju- nior high, despite the extra work it entails. Freshmen Perform New Activities The Freshmen dess has been kept very busy with various activi- ties this year. They have donated money for the colored pages in the annual. They also performed a skit during the Homecoming Coronation entitled The Tales of the Unex- pected. Being freshmen, they also had the high honor of hauling away the ashes left by the bonfire. Sixth Grade Goes Metric The sixth grade year was filled with many new things. They learned all about the metric sys- tem and posters about the metric system were made. They did a check in their home and compared them to our money system. The class also studied about their home state of South Dakota. Each child sent for information about a city in South Dakota and they wrote reports about that city. They also made salt flour maps of South Dakota. Their big art project for the year was making string designs. Nine out of the twelve students also participated in band. BACK RON: Left to Right: Tom Heilman. Keith Van Well. Tami Tim Karst. This year the fifth graders have had some new experiences. It is their first year of receiving letter grades. They have had to learn to take notes and study for tests. New science and English books have presented them with chal- lenges. In science they especially enjoyed a unit on waste manage- ment where they made sanitary landfills as an activity. A tour of The Bowdle Pioneer, which went along with our newspaper unit in English, was another highlight for the fifth graders. They have stud- ied the fifty states in Social Stud- ies and tried their hand at mas- tering fractions in math class. Fifteen of the students also participated in their first year of band.
