There is nothing more we can do for Lance Schumacher. Therefore, the purpose of this page is to serve as our remembrance of him—of the kid who laughed in the hallways, blocked on the football team, served as a student lead- er, made music with the band, sweated out tests, and joked with friends—of the kid who lived eighteen years and was suddenly gone. It's been almost a year since Lance died, and we will remember him for the rest of our lives. For this, we are grateful. Lance was the kind of person we want to remember. 2 ADMINISTRATION OUTLINES OBJECTIVES Robert Schlinkert, Mike Mitzel, Alvin Kurle, Gideon Schuh, Treasurer; Richard Kellogg, Wilmer Schaible, Clerk; Harold Nies, Chairman; Alvin Bauer, Vice Chairman; Oscar Metzger. A special wide-view mirror was in- stalled on the new bus to further the safety of the riders. This year the BHS cooks were headed by a new head cook, Mrs. Ted Leid- holt. The study hall was regulated by mon- itors instead of teachers this year. This gave the teachers more time to help the students. STUDY HALL SUPERVISOR: Mrs. Helen Bobby. SECRETARY: Mrs. Loretta Schaibie. 7 BUS DRIVERS: Harvey Leidholt, Alvin Schmierer, Ray Bach- man, Bob Huber, Oscar Metzger, and Dave Zimmer. The onlookers are Cathy Fischer and Gail Bauer. GAIL BAUER RICHARD CARLSON CATHY FISCHER WILLIAM BOBBY 9 LANET EISENBEISZ This was a very rewarding and busy year for the Seniors. The first major decision made by the Seniors, was deciding who deserved the honor of being the royalty candidates for Home- coming. Other major events enjoyed by the Seniors, were the trips to Pierre and Redfield. In Pierre, the Seniors saw the State Government in action. The basic concepts of govern- ment were learned earlier in Government class. The Mental Retardation Center at Redfield was an addition to Sociology and Psychology classes. The event that most of the Seniors had been waiting for came on Graduation Day May 25th. LAINE RIEGER JANELL LEIDHOLT Senior soul is shown by Senior girls as they make posters to support the Bobcat team and to create school spirit. MARGARET GROSS CHRIS SCHUMACHER DAVID PERSON The moment that the seniors were eagerly anticipating came on January 18, 1971, when they received their senior privi- leges. They waited for this day since school started and were overjoyed by the fact that they came early this year. The sen- iors are awarded these privileges in order to prepare them for life in college. The seniors are pretty much on their own during their free time and are allowed to leave the school grounds any time of the day that they aren't attending class. The seniors are also on their honor during this time. They are expected to uphold all rules that apply to the honor of re- ceiving these privileges. Any rule that is broken results in the dismissal of all rights concerning the senior privileges. So far these privileges are being enjoyed by all the seniors with hopes that they will help them in their coming life in college. The Seniors making posters are: Sheila DEAN MERTZ Langstan, Lanet Eisenbeisz, Janell Leidholt, Candice Bieber, and Margy Gross. BONNIE FEICKERT MARY MILLER DOUGLAS KIESZ li Seniors collide at their lockers. The colliders are: Mary Miller, Dean Mertz, and Bonnie Feickert. FRED PETERMEN SANDRA PETERSON ROBERT ZIMMER ARLYN SCHAIBLE PAMELA ZAMBO This year, in order to prepare the seniors for their future, the seniors' classes are chosen to correspond with their future plans. The seniors going to college take the college preparatory courses, while the students going to vocational school take courses to help them in their chosen field. Students wishing to take courses not offered in the curricu- lum of this school can take courses of their choosing through correspondence to the University of South Dakota. The seniors are going into such a wide variety of fields that some do not have any classes with fellow classmates. 12 OUTSTANDING SENIORS This year instead of the regular Valedictorian and Salutatorian, students with a 2.5 average were named as honor students. They are: FIRST ROW: Gail Bauer, Candice Bieber, Sandra Peterson, Cathy Fischer, Mary Miller, and Janell Leidholt. SECOND ROW: Rich Mitzel, Laine Rieger, Dean Mertz, Glenn Blumhardt, Arlyn Schaible, and Dick Carlson. Candice Bieber was selected as Betty Crocker Homemak- er of Tomorrow. Dean Mertz was selected as Boys' Stater. Cathy Fischer was selected as Girls' Stater. 13 Ila Abbey Dane Aldinger Leroy Beitelspacher Nancy Dewald Perry Hoffman Kathy Abbey Dean Aldinger Leo Bieber Paulette Dewald Corrine Hoven Cheryl Aldinger Wayne Bachman Gene Buechler Shelley Gross Judy Hoven JUNIORS Some of the Junior girls found the lab rats interesting pets. The rat lovers are: Valynn Perman, Candice Lemke, Susie Person, and Jayne Schlepp. The juniors filled their year in many different ways. The most out- standing thing that the juniors did was helping out in the time of need. During the tragedy that claimed the Peterman house and all their pos- sessions, the juniors circulated sheets of paper with the children's clothing sizes on them. These were distributed all through the town. Every street was covered and the juniors received a numerous amount of clothing while out on the drive. After this was done, many of the girls volunteered to help at the Le- gion Hall with sorting out clothes that people brought. 14 LEND HAND Valynn Perman Susie Person Bonnie Schuh The juniors annual magazine drive was considered a great success. The total intake was a little over three hundred dollars. This money will go towards the Jun- ior-Senior Prom. The juniors also worked hard on this project. An important event for the juniors was Homecoming week. The juniors received first place on their skit entitled A Word From Our Sponsor. They also had the responsibility of decorating the stage for the coro- nation program. Later on in the year, the juniors began making plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. After the anxious mo- ment had arrived and the excitement of the prom was over, the juniors began making plans for the coming year and their graduation. Taking it easy are: SOPH’S The sophomores had many tasks to perform this school year. One of the main tasks was the build- ing of the pre-homecoming game bonfire. The boys were required to gather the wood for the bon- fire which took lots of time and effort. The bonfire was a huge success and was enjoyed not only by the high school students but also by the many observers. While the boys were preparing for the bonfire, the girls were preparing for big victory dance following the game. The sopho- mores were assisted by the freshmen girls in this duty. As sophomores, a skit was also re- quired of the class. This skit was entitled, The Unexpected . k Darlene Sandmeier, Randy Bollinger, Jeff Buechler, Mr. Larson, and Owen Schumacher. PROGRESS Roberta Nies Arlene Sandmeier Joel Schmierer Owen Schumacher One of the bigger highlights of the year was the choosing of the wait- ers and waitresses for the Junior- Senior Prom. These are chosen by the junior class. The waiters chosen were: Owen Schumacher, Lyle Perman, Lyle Schock, and Dale Bobby. The waitresses chosen were: Roberta Nies, Colleen Buechler, Linda Rieger, and Wynne Blumhardt. This duty is considered a great honor but also a lot of work. Another important responsibility for the sophomores was the Senior Tea. The tea is held after the baccalaureate services in the school lunch room. This tea is a chance for the sopho- mores to do something special for the seniors. These and many other jobs help prepare the sophomores for the hard work involved in being a junior next year. Pictured above is this class in session. The freshmen find that high school life is very dif- ferent compared to the junior high level. They now have the opportunity to change class rooms and use the study hall to a greater extent. They also enjoy the use of the new student lounge. Throughout the year, there are many activities that involve the participation of the entire class. Begin- ning with Homecoming, the class is required to clean up the remaining bits and pieces of the big Home- coming bonfire built by the sophomores. The fresh- men girls are obligated to serve the lunch following this bonfire. The class also put on the skit, The Meaning of the Bobcat , as entertainment for the royalty. Following the Homecoming football game, the student body attended a dance that was gaily dec- orated by the fi’eshmen along with the sophomores. 18 PROGRESS In addition to their many activi- ties, the freshmen have an added advantage never before offered in high school. The freshmen are allowed to take advanced classes such as Typing I, which is usu- ally offered to sophomores only. This is done in order to allow them to take more classes next year and ease their load of class- es throughout high school. There are many freshmen boys who are also taking advantage of the extracurricular activities such as basketball and football. Many take part in one or the other or both. Many also participate in track. It is believed that many stars will come out of this pro- gressing class. The hardest problem for the children, is to ad- just socially to being with others their own age. The children are taught to learn thru actual experiences. Their first big event was the making of valentines for Valentines Day. After they had them made and addressed, they had the privilege to mail them and watch the process that their cards are put thru af- ter they are mailed. During the windy month of March, the students made kites. Making real gingerbread men cookies was an ex- citing part of their school term. Thru these and many more real life experiences, the kindergarten students are shaped into future students of BHS. Candice Bieber, who placed third in the shot-put at the Region, failed to earn the right to go to the State Track Meet as only first and second place winners qualify. But for those interested in the sport, the season had its rewarding moments. There were a total of ten participating in the sport during the season. Out of these ten, the Bobcats sent three people to the state meet in Rapid City. They were: Jason Person, shot put; Pat Miller, mile run; and Dean Aldinger, pole vault. The Bob- cats also added a trophy to their case at the Ipswich Invitational in the hurdle relay. For the upcoming season the Bobcats seem to be one of the best contenders for the conference meet and one of the best track teams in the history of the school. With the strong feeling of competition that the school has felt through the sports season, the Bob- cats should have as exciting season. It was the first year that the 'Cats have taken a YTC Championship since 1951, a span of 19 years. There were 9 returning lettermen on the squad. The Bobcats set a new school record in num- ber of points scored, with 408 compared to 333 in 1967. They also gave up the least number of points, 54. The last state poll ranked the Bobcats 10th. This was the most productive year in Bowdle football history. There may have been stronger teams, but never has there been the momentum and team work that the 'Cats displayed this year. And fear's the way we die. You can make the mountains ring Or make the angels cry; 'Tho the bird is on the wing, And you may not know why. Some will come and some will go. And we shall surely pass, When the one that left us here, Returns for us at last. We are but a moment's sunlight Fading in the grass. If you hear the song I sing. You will understand. You hold the key to love and fear In your trembling hand. Just one key unlocks them both; It's there at your command. Come on, people, Smile on your brother. Everybody get together; Try to love one another Right now. —Chet Powers We dedicate this yearbook and the work we put into it to our hope for a peaceful future based on love for our fellow men and concern for one another. ---BHS Annual Staff 57 Buechler's Cafe Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schumacher and Family Mr. and Mrs. Art Merkel Mrs. Edgar Buechler and Jerae Ozzies' Super Valu Mr. and Mrs. Ozzie Schlepp and Family Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Sandmeier and Jerry Mrs. Clara Gross Mr. and Mrs. James Larson and Billy American Legion Post 264 American Legion Auxiliary Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Gross, Tim and Tom Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Erbe Mr. and Mrs. Albert Perman Art and Millie Bieber Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Perman and Family Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kiesz and Family Mr. and Mrs. Erhard Beitelspacher and Family The Clarence Beitelspacher Family Mr. Peterson Mr. Boetel Mr. and Mrs. Keyser and Stacy Mr. Robert Schlinkert Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Hoven, Corrine and Perry Mr. and Mrs. Terry Jordre and Family Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bachman Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schuh and Family Mr. and Mrs. Athneal Buechler and Sons Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Mittleider Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bauer and Family Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Leno Mr. and Mrs. Willis Bieber and Family Auto Dine of Aberdeen Bank of Hoven, South Dakota Bowdle Mothers Club Mr. and Mrs. Ted Leidholt Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bieber and Daughters Mr. and Mrs. Orville Walz and Girls Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Miller and Family Mr. and Mrs. Norman Schumacher and Family Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Eisenbeisz Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Lee Office Equipment Company, Aberdeen, So.
