1969 BOBCAT BOWDLE PUBLIC SCHOOL BOWDLE, SOUTH DAKOTA EDITOR: Susan Carlson ASSISTANT EDITOR: Connie Kurle ADVISOR: Miss Olga Wagner The tasks of the Board of Edu- cation have been increasing each year. Among its many functions are securing competent and pro- fessional teachers, providing a school which is comfortable and conducive to learning, and es- tablishing a secure budget appropriate for our needs. One of the main educational issues confronting the Board this year was individualized approach toward instruction. Our Board of Education is to be highly complimented for their fine efforts and earnest devotion. The Student Council was a very busy organization this year. One of its first responsibilities was to keep a communicative line between the students and advisors. The Student Council developed and organized plans for Home- coming. Also among its activities was the sponsoring of a Saddie Hawkins dance. At Christmas a container was left in the Study Hall for all students wishing to contribute for the floor lamp purchased for the Bowdle Nursing Home. A new delightful Christmas happening was a film and a pinata break formulated and prepared by the Council members. ADMINISTRATION PLANS MOD” SCHEDULE MR. EUGENE C. All of the faculty put forth efforts to improve their own teaching methods and get more response from their students by having in-service training. They attended Sat- urday sessions that were conducted by edu- cational leaders, where ideas were exchang- ed on different teaching methods and tech- niques. Using Title I money, the faculty also made use of curriculum newsletters that were geared to each teacher's specific teaching area. Of course, their regular classes kept them busy with correcting papers and preparing interesting classes for the next day, but they still took time to chaperon fan buses, sell tickets, and take students to various con- ventions and educational gatherings. The six bus drivers, headed by Dave Zimmer, transport stu- dents to and from school each day on their designated routes. Due to the snow and ice caused by blizzard-like conditions, the bus drivers' responsibilities were increased. BUS DRIVERS: Emil Dufloth, Oscar Metzger, Dave Zimmer, Dwight Commet, Rev. Archie Lovaas, and Joe Stappler. The cooks work many hours preparing meals which are nutri- tional, appealing, and tasty. Pizza, a favorite of the students, was added to the menu. The cooks also prepare special meals before holidays. The custodians, along with their regular duties, brightened the halls with a new coat of paint. They work very hard to make our surroundings more pleasant. Mrs. Schaible issues meal tickets, helps treasurers of classes and organizations balance their book, and is the school's efficient secretary. Mrs. Keyser was a part-time teachers' aide during the school's first semester. She also did secretarial work. Checking the eyes and ears of the elementary students was one project carried out by Mrs. Bodkin, the school nurse. She also collected general health records from the elementary students' parents. Wade Schmierer and Donnie Houghtaling are two seniors working on a chemistry experiment... The Seniors belonging to the Twelve Year Club this year were: Allen Leidholt, Tessy Bachman, Pam Knecht, Molly Vetch, Dennis Stotz, Marcella Feickert, Norbert Thomas, Kathy Huber, Karen Schmierer, Susan Carlson, Marsha Oster, and Brad Schlepp. For the 1968-69 school term at Bowdle High School, many things have changed. The seniors as well as the other high school students had to adjust to a new type of system, called MODULAR SCHEDULING. Under this flexible MOD a machines room was set up, called the A. V. Center, in which seniors in Honor Society acted as 'librarians. These machines and aids, which helped out many of the seniors in their classes, could be checked in and out much like a library. An old tradition was broken, to the disappointment of the seniors. They lost their privilege of being first in the lunch line, due to the new scheduling. On the 20th of December they put on a high school dance featuring a band called The Carousels. ACT tests and ITED tests aided the seniors in many challenging de- cisions about their future. Now after decisions are made, the seniors can look back with happy remembrances of those happy golden rule days but also can look to their future knowing that all of their high school experiences and years were an opening door to the challenges beyond. HONORED SENIORS RECEIVE AWARDS Susan Carlson, Valedictorian, received the top honor in the Class of 1969. She also, chosen by the American Legion Aux- iliary, attended Girls' State held at DWU. Marcella Feickert was chosen as the D.A.R. candidate from B.H.S. She was also an Out- standing Teenager and Betty Crocker Homemaker. Dennis Stotz received the honor of Salutatorian. He was also chosen as an Outstanding Teen- ager and attended Boys' State at NSC. Patti Nies was chosen as Presi- dent of the northern district of the South Dakota Student Librari- ans Association. HONOR SOCIETY Scholarship, leadership, service, and char- acter are the qualifications of a National Honor Society member. Ten students from grades eleven and twelve have met these requirements at the Bowdle High School. They are the members of the Dirego (I Lead) Chapter of the National Honor Society. This year the Dirego Chapter tackled a new HAS NEW PROJECT and very worthwhile project. Added to the school’s facilities was an Audio-Visual Center where the students of Bowdle High School were able to use the typewriters, ditto machines, and copiers. Filmstrips, movies, and tapes were also available. The ten mem- bers of the Honor Society served as super- visors in the AV Center with one member helping at all times. Decoratingfor the Coronation was done in an unusual way in comparison to previous years. It pro- duced a more contemporary and sophisticated scene. ITED tests were a chal- lenge to further our gain in knowledge while the ac- quisition of the traditional concession stand was an easier task to take on. It was so successful that we reached our goal early in the year and passed on its responsibilities to other fund raising organizations. The ordering of class rings was an important step in the status of a Junior. Of course, the prom, and all its work, fun, and respon- sibility was the major achievement of the Junior class. Starting off the excitement of the event was the coro- nation of the Bobcat King and Queen. Thursday even- ing, September 26, 1968, ended the reign of Queen Florence Stern and Co-Kings Paul Bachman and Wayne Buechler, but it marked the beginning of Queen Pam Knecht's and King Curtis Eisenbeisz's reign. Blake Eisenbeisz, master of ceremonies, presented the evening's entertainment to the royalty. Skits were performed by the student body and the teachers. Following the coronation the students participated in a snake dance and enjoyed lunch after the bonfire. On Friday night the Bobcats bravely challenged the Roscoe Hornets, but the Bobcats went down in defeat. The students gathered in the gym after the game for a dance featuring Ray and the Ravens, thus ending memorable days in the history of the students. ROYALTY: Charleen Houghtaling, Marcella Feickert, Marsha Oster, Lynette Klapperich, Florence Stern, Pam Knecht, Curtis Eisenbeisz, Wayne Buechler, Steve Dewald, Dennis Stotz, Brad Schlepp, and Norbert Thomas. 30 HOMECOMING HIGHLIGHTS Casey's Coffins, presented by the Junior class, was chosen as the first place skit by the Royalty. Second place went to the Lettermen's Club for their skit, Kar Tire Wrench. The Pep Club received third place for their skit entitled Going My Way. The band and chorus both participated in the coronation program. James Doerr made a pleasant interruption in the evening's program to present to Mr. Youngman a victory scroll which was car- ried by the cross-country runners from Roscoe to Bowdle. We hope that some day the band, chorus, and the victory scroll will be spoken of not as an addition to the coronation program but as a tradition. Since this was a presidential year, students took an active part in politics by campaigning and voting to elect new government officials. The students also participated in a Veterans Day program centering around the services of men who died for our country. Again this year Reveille, the raising of the flag on Monday, and Retreat, the removal of the flag on Friday, were performed by the various groups on their appointed days. A change made for the students' and teachers' convenience was a door connecting the science laboratory with the adjoining room. Also added to the school's program of education was a series of Lyceum programs including such topics as Music, Heroes, Narcotics, and Ocean Science. As in the previous year, a Christmas gift was given to the Bowdle Nursing Home with students contributing voluntarily for the purchase of several floor lamps. These are only a few of the many happenings which occurred at BHS but they shall remind us of a very productive year. To help you remember these im- portant occurrences, this book was com- piled for you. The Bobcat annual staff has worked for many long hours to reach this goal—to capture each important second and put it down on paper, so that one day you will be able to look back and remember. The eighteen members of the annual staff, under the supervision of Miss Olga Wagner, annual advisor, have strived to reach this goal, working dili- gently to complete this book. As pro- gress became evident, our satisfaction grew and the deadline became closer. As we present this book to you, we hope that our efforts will be successful, and that this book will become a book of memo- ries. Wayne Buechler was elected president of the northern district. The librarians won first prize on the bulletin board which they entered in competition. The bulletin board was entitled These Books are Tops. Mrs. Erbe, school librarian, provided assist- ance for the student librarians this year. She worked with them to keep the library organized and up-to-date. The librarians worked hard to arrange the resource and reference materials in the library. New books and magazine subscriptions have been added to the library's other resources this year. 36 The pep club of BHS is composed of all the girls in high school with Mrs. Berg as its advisor. For the first time they presented a fall concert. Also pre- sented were a Christmas Concert, Pops Concert, and a Spring Concert. At each, a different type of music was featured. BOBCATS RECEIVE HONORS The Bowdle Bobcats, led by seven seniors, faced this season with great hopes. However, their wishes for an undefeated season were marred by three losses. One such game was the Bobcats' season open- er with the tough Langford team. It was a scoreless match well into the final quarter. Eventually the Lions squeaked it open and won 9-0. Bowdle hopefully traveled to Hoven, seeking a conference win, but with two start- ing seniors out of action, the 'Cats couldn't contain the Greyhounds, cruising to a 32-13 defeat. Three of the injured hobbled to the games on crutches to watch their team fell Pollock 27-13 and trounce Java 27-6. Home- coming, and second-ranked Roscoe, faced Bowdle, but the 'Cats failed to meet the chal- lenge. The seasoned Hornets bowled the 'Cats over 40-13. With their injuries healed, the lost players were ready for action, and re- turned to make the hard-nosed Bowdle octet whole again. They uneasily led the Selby squad and at the crack of the final gun, the 'Cats had a victory, 20-13. The team then nonchalantly flattened Hosmer 28-7 and ravaged Herreid 39-6 at the Second Annual Dad's Night. The Bowdle squad squared around to clash with Timber Lake. The season finale evolved into a scoring rampage. When the dust finally settled the 'Cats had tallied 39 points to the Panthers' 24. Injuries that hampered the team this year were aided by a new whirlpool installed before the season's start. It was partially financed by a Homecoming raffle, sponsored by the Letter- men's Club. Two of Bowdle's players received statewide recognition this year as outstanding in foot- ball. Dennis Stotz, who did a fine job block- ing on offense and averaged fifteen tackles a game defensively, was selected as a first string guard on the All-State eight-man team. The other, Brad Schlepp, was chosen as quarterback for the second string team. Although plagued with numerous injuries, the Bobcats had a very fine season with the team accumulating a 5-2 record in conference play, placing them third in the Yellowstone Trail and compiling a over-all record of 6-3. 44 Coach Youngman explains assign- Curt Eisenbeisz (carrying ments to the defense, Larry Mer- ball) makes a cut with Rich kel (22) and Lonnie Vetch (kneel- Mitzel covering, ing). A” TEAM HAS 14-8 RECORD All three of Bowdle's members on the All-District Team, Curt Eisenbeisz, Brad Schlepp, and Dennis Stotz, returned as seniors to lead the Bobcats through this year's basketball season. The Cats flew out of the blocks with nine wins and one loss after the first ten games, but the last twelve contests only yielded an unimpres- sive 5-7 record. The quints entered the conference tourney with a tight 51-48 victory over Roscoe. The Hornets reversed the tables immediately following the tournament, handing Bowdle a 48-51 defeat. The 'Cats' over-all record of 14-8 was very similar to the record of the previous year, 15-9; however, last season had a slow first half and a kick in the final stretch. In its second year a BHS, Cross-Country run- ning attracted a group of hopeful pacers. These boys attended meets at Leola, Selby, Timber Lake, and the State at Brookings. Cross-Country became a conference sport this year, and Bowdle was honored to host the race at the Signal Hill golf course. The home-town runners placed fifth in the field of Glenham, Herreid, Hosmer, Hoven, and Java. The team, with the addition of Jim Commet, relayed a Homecoming victory scroll from Roscoe to Bowdle to incite spirit in the student body. Anchoring the relay into the middle of the coronation program, Jim Doerr presented the scroll.
