SENIORS RECEIVE HONORS DIANA HOVEN Receiving top honors in the Class of 1968 were Valedictorian Diana Hoven and Salutatorian W anda Bauer. Luane Eisenbeisz was chosen a vice-president of the SDSLA. Luane was also Miss Bowdle in the Snow Queen contest. Selected as D.A.R. was Sheila Metzger who competed in county compe- tition. Attending Boys' State at NSC last summer was Jim Schlepp. Diana Hoven attended Girls' State at DWU. Alternates for Boys' State and Girls' State were Paul Bachman and Susan Dewald. WANDA BAUER VALEDICTORIAN GIRLS' STATE Other honors received by Seniors were: Outstanding Teenager and Betty Crocker Award, Diana Hoven; Representatives for the Bankers Convention, Sheila Metzger and Dean Schumacher. BOARD HAS PRODUCTIVE YEAR SEATED: Alvin Kurle, Harold Nies, Mike Mitzel, Vice-President; Wilmer Schaible, Clerk; Alvin Bauer. STANDING: Eugene Hart, Duane Steiger, President. The tasks of the Board of Education have been in- creasing each year. Among its many functions are securing a staff of com- petent and professional teachers, providing a school which is comfortable and conducive to learning. It also establishes a budget which will provide the necessary funds needed to operate the school. Our Board of Education is to be commended highly for their fine efforts and earnest devotion. COUNCIL PROMOTES NEW IDEAS Reveille and Retreat was a new idea which was directed by the different established groups on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Another idea was buying a picture for the Bowdle Nursing Home at Christmas with money raised from dona- tions by students in grades 7-12 Another responsibility of the Student Council in this past year was the preparation of Homecoming and the arranging of its festivities. Joseph Stappler, Oscar Metzger, Hugo Blumhardt, Larry Bauer, Dave Zimmer, Captain, and Gordon Stotz. Mrs. Emma Bonen, Mrs. Freda Bucken- berger, Mrs. Katie Dumdei, and Mrs. Adeline Brown. PERSONNEL HAS NEW MEMBERS The personnel works long, hard hours. Mrs. Buckenberger and her helpers get up as early as 4:00 a. m. to prepare meals which are delicious and are well balanced. By the time the cooks are hard at work, six bus drivers start on their respective routes and Emil Bonen and Dave Zimmer are busy getting the school building and grounds ready. Emil has been a janitor at Bowdle School for 14 years. Dave a newcomer this year has proved himself very worthy of his position as assistant janitor. Mrs. Schaible, the new office secre- tary, is very busy handling most financial matters in the office and taking care of all the meal tickets, so hers is not an unfamiliar face to the students. Mrs. Bodkin, the school nurse is in school every Tuesday and Thursday to take care of grade school checkups, and she is always willing to take care of any aches or pains that turn up daily.
