1968 BOBCAT BOWDLE PUBLIC SCHOOL BOWDLE, SOUTH DAKOTA America is a land of wonders in which everything is in constant motion and every change seems an improvement. —Alexis De Tocqueville IN MEMORIAM LANCE CORPORAL WAYNE R. BARTH We, the students of Bowdle High School, honor the memory of Marine Lance Corporal Wayne R. Barth who died in Viet Nam on April 24, 1967. Wayne received all twelve years of his educa- tion in the Bowdle school system and graduated in 1964. Some of his high school activities included football, Letter men’s Club, and the 12 Year Club. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Marines. He was within weeks of com- pleting his tour of duty at the time of his death. 2 SCHOOL HAS NEW ADMINISTRATION This year, Bodle Public School had a complete change of administration. Mr. Eugene C. Hart was the superintendent. This is his third year as a superin- tendent. Mr. Hart took care of financial matters, acted as head of the grade school, and served as a go-between for the teachers and the school board. The new principal, Mr. Roger Youngman, was serving his first year as a principal, although he had taught in the system for five years previously. His main job was seeing that the Jr. and Sr. high school runs smoothly and efficiently. Many changes have taken place within the school under the new administration. The establishment of the floating period eased the tension on grades 7-12. Also a program was launched to study the possibility of doing away with report cards in the lower grades. MR. EUGENE C. This will be an aid in bringing ex- perts to us at a most convenient time. Another new innovation is the practice of seminar teaching. The teachers were very busy with classes, supervising study halls, correcting papers and preparing for the next day's work. In addition to these regular duties they volunteered their time and services chaperoning fan buses, selling tickets and help- ing with the various activities of the school. MR. THOMAS McCARTY, B.S. The Bobcats hope to come back strong again next year with most players having quite a bit of game experience. The Bobcats finished second in the Yellow- stone Trail Conference with a 6-1 record and an overall record of 8-1. The team outscored their opponents by a margin of 332-58. During the nine game schedule the Bobcats shut out five of these teams. Berried, the second-ranked team in the state was the only team to upset the 'Cats in the battle of the undefeated. The last home game with Timberlake was a very special one. For the first time in the history of Bowdle High the fathers were honored with a Dad's Night. In closing the season the Bobcats traveled to Langford to take on the 6th-ranked Lions. With that never give up desire the Bobcats whipped Langford which moved the 'Cats up to 10th in the state rank. Two new facilities were added to the foot- ball field this year. A set of bleachers was purchased to help make the people more comfortable. Also a new watering system was installed in order to keep the grass green. 40 FIRST ROW: Coach Roger Youngman, Perry Hoffman, Dean Aldinger, Larry Merkel, Curtis Lemke, Blake Eisenbeisz, Dave Person, Student Manager Pat Miller. The team had a near even record in the middle of the season and then came on strong in the second half to win the greater majority of their games. The Bobcats have a young team this year with three Juniors on the starting team and quite a few Sophomores getting valuable experience. Next years team should have a fine season with the greater half of the team coming back. CROSS-COUNTRY BECOMES NEW EVENT A new sport, Cross-Country running, was initiated last fall at Bowdle High. Seven boys participated in a total of six meets. Stand out runners on the squad were James Doerr and Pat Miller who showed promise throughout the season. Two local meets were held at Bowdle Signal Hill golf course. The highlight of the season came when three of the run- ners participated in the 22nd Annual Cross-Country Run at SDSU at Brookings. The sport of Cross-Country may soon be incorporated in the conference athletic program. Cross-Country will offer un- limited opportunities to our fleet-footed athletes. TRACK TEAM HAS YOUNG MEMBERS The track squad traveled to many meets including Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Ipswich, Hoven, Mobridge and Aberdeen. At the Conference Track Meet in Mobridge the team placed 4th but later on in the year failed to send anyone to the State Track Meet in Sioux Falls. One record was broken in the school this year by Joel Hoffman, who broke the old pole vault record of 9'9 and raised the height to 10'2 during the Ipswich meet. The track team looks forward to a better year this year with just about the entire team returning for another year. The club's first activity was to sell tickets for the annual Yellowstone Trail Conference Banquet. Another way to make money was brought up in the club and that was to sponsor a show that featured a well- known magician and hypnotist, The Dr. Kit Show. The money made by these activities are used to buy equipment for athletic means. The money-making activities turned out to be of great success. They are Florence Stern, Pam Knecht, Susan Dewald, and Karen Schmierer. All the girls in high school plus the cheerleaders make up the pep club. Their job is to keep the spirit of the players up during the basketball and football seasons. This year the pep club sold booster buttons to raise money for the pep club and to promote spirit during the homecoming festivities. Each week the pep club selected a class to put up decorations throughout the building depicting our victory over the opposing team. A pep rally was held before each home game with a skit led by the A cheerleaders to assure the boys of a victory. The cheerleaders yelling for the B team are Margaret Gross, Janice Gross, Candice Bieber, and Rosemary Dewald.
