STANDING: Robert Putnam, Superintendent; Duane Steiger, Chairman. The Board of Education has many important functions. Their major function is to provide the school children of the school district with the best educational oppor- tunities possible. They are the governing body and policy-making group of the school district. Also, they are the connecting link be- tween the public which sup- ports the school, and the professional personnel which administers the school. This group serves with out re- muneration, except for expenses; they are volun- tary servants of the people of the community. This is truly a striking example of democracy in action. CAPTAINS CONTROL SCHOOL In the fall of the year when school begins, the Student Council starts the planning of all the Homecoming ac- tivities. They plan the cor- onation, skits, snake dance, bon fire, and football game. They are one hundred per cent responsible for the success of Homecoming. Throughout the year the Stu- dent Council also sponsors money raising projects to raise funds to support its activities and helps to es- tablish standards of conduct and dress for school functions. SEATED: Janice Goldade, Treasurer; Sharlene Bollinger, Secretary; Karen Zimmer, President; Ronnie Mitzel, Vice President; Mr. Wooledge, Advisor. A teacher who possesses these qualities and has for the past four years, is Miss Olga Wagner. She has been patient with us while we struggled with our problems and somehow has always managed to pull us in out of the rain. She has spent many endless hours in helping the annual staff with the yearbook. For this and much more the Senior Class wishes to dedicate the 1967 BOBCAT to Miss Olga Wagner. The Senior Class of Bowdle High School wishes to dedicate the 1967 BOBCAT to a teacher who has been with us for six years. In these six years we have come to know him as a fine educator and a reliable person. He has captured the respect and admiration of the entire student body of Bowdle High School, and has served as a friend and guide-step to all. Thank you very much, Mr. D. Dale Wooledge. 3 STAFF CREATES A BOOK OF MEMORIES SEATED: Linda Mittleider, Typist; Diana Hoven, Assistant Editor; Janet Buechler, Editor-in-Chief; Miss Wagner, Advisor; Marianne Bachman, Music Editor. The Bobcat staff was confronted with many problems as they tried to meet ’’three deadline dates instead of the usual one as was done in previous years. Other changes made were: Copy reset by printers, extending the year- book to 56 pages, and switching to hard covers. The days came and went like lightning as the staff struggled to fit pictures, copy, and head- ings unto the pages. Many times all patience was worn to a thin frazzle. There was no relaxation until the last shipment was sent, in February of 1967. But when the finished yearbooks came in May, the staff had faces which showed smiles of great satisfaction. The staff presents this book to you in hopes that it will help you re- live some of the year’s important happenings. 4 FACULTY GIVES STUDENTS MR. ROBERT PUTNAM Superintendent MR. Bright and early each morning, six bus drivers start on their respective routes with the six buses, one of which is new, to pick up the children for school. When the children arrive, they see Mrs. Putnam about meal tickets and other financial matters. She now does all of her clerical work on a new long-carriage typewriter. The head cook, Mrs. Buckenberger, along with her helpers, then prepares an appe- tizing meal for the children and serves it on the new plastic-topped tables. Later on in the day, someone is bound to get hurt and goes to Mrs. Bodkin, who is the first school nurse Bowdle has ever had. Mrs. Bodkin also gives the grade schoolchildren a physical checkup and hearing tests. At the end of the school day the children are taken home again by the buses. When all is quiet, Mr. Bonen, the custodian, cleans the school and enjoys using his new vacuum cleaner on the new ozite rugs on the first floor hall and typing room. The new physical education program, which includes grades 1-9, is im- portant to learning. The opaque projector changes the style of of learning as it projects pictures and information on a screen. 26 ACTIVITIES On the evening of Monday, October 3, 1966, Karen Zimmer and Richard Dufloth were chosen by the student body to reign over the 1966-67 Homecoming festivities of Bowdle High School. David Karst, last year's King, crowned Richard and Carolee Huft, last year's Queen, crowned Karen. Mark Bieber served as master of ceremonies for the cor- onation program. The enter- tainment consisted of skits which were enacted by various members of the student body. First place was given to the Pep Club with the skit English as She is Spoke. Second place was awarded to the Lettermen's Club with Chalk Talk. Tied for third place was the Pep Club with Teachers and the Junior class with Fractured Funeral. Other skits during the evening were The B” by the A Cheer- leaders, A Germ Convention by the Freshman, and A Vision by the Sophomores. The program was proceeded by a bonfire and a snake dance. On the following night, the Bowdle Bobcats were chal- lenged by the Herreid Yellow- jackets. Half-time activities included the high school marching band, a review of the King and Queen, and the un- masking of Barney the Bobcat, who was Mrs. Everet Lemke. After the game, in which the Bobcats were defeated, a dance was held in the school gym to top off the Homecoming activ- ities. These eventful days then became part of the past. The hall, adorned with many toneful colors and other added at- tractions, created a sentimental atmosphere. The banquet, prepared by the junior mothers, was served by eight sophomores: Florence Stern, John Bieber, Rebecca Kiesz, Ron Mitzel, Susan Dewald, Joel Hoffman, Luane Eisenbeisz, and Ron Strouckel. Karen Zimmer was mistress of ceremonies for the program. The guest speaker was Mr. Putnam. Dave Kramer read the class history, Cathy Gross read the class will, and Janet Buechler read the class prophecy. The grand march, led by Judy Huber and her escort, marked the beginning of the dance. The Gaslighters furnished the music. After the dance, a movie was enjoyed at the theater. FROM DREAMS TO REALITY TO MEMORIES WE HAVE COME TO AN END ONLY TO START ANEW 1. BAND JOINS SEA OF SUCCESS Without their long hours of practice their success would not have been possible. The Bobcat band once again completed another successful year in marching competition. For the third consecutive year they captured first place in Class C competition at Gypsy Day in Aberdeen. A change from the Ellendale marching competition to Huron was made this year. From Huron the band proudly brought home a traveling trophy and a prize of $75. The trophy must be won for three consecutive years before it belongs permanently to any school. All the band members long for this trophy and hope to win it for the next two years. The marching band, minus the football and basketball players and cheerleaders, played for all home games to raise the spirit of the team. 34 FIRST ROW: Hope Eisenbeisz, Marsha Weiszhaar, Marsha Oster. The concert band entertained the public at the annual winter concert. The pro- gram consisted of many Christmas se- lections. They also participated in a spring concert, playing selections that both young and old enjoyed immensely. As in previous years the band journeyed to Mobridge to participate in Class C com- petition at the music contest. Last year at the contest a rating of II was earned by the band members for their excellent showing. After two years of candy sales, rum- mage sales, and concerts, enough money was finally procured to order new band uniforms. They were ex- pected to arrive sometime before the pictures were to be taken. After needless worry they finally arrived December 13, 1966. At the annual winter concert each band member wore his complete uniform, with the exception of the plumed hats. Dining at the Inn Motel, the band prepares for the afternoon competition at Huron. 35 Brass Sexette members are: FIRST ROW: Hope Eisenbeisz, Cathy Sandmeier, Richard Carlson. BOBCATS HAVE 6 - I RECORD The Bobcats started a successful season by winning their first four games. For their first vic- tory they journeyed to Java. The next was a home game with Roscoe playing under Bowdle's newly lighted field. By defeating the hard fighting Selby Lions, who had not lost a game in eleven previous contests, the Bobcats gained the number nine spot in the state. Bowdle's high spirited team went on to gain their fourth victory by downing the Hosmer Tigers. The Bobcats' hopes of a perfect season were shattered on Homecoming when they were stung by the speedy Herreid Yellowjackets. After losing their first game of the season, Bowdle won two consecutive games, one with Hoven, whom the Bobcats haven't beaten since eight man football was introduced into the conference, and the other with Pollock. This ended their great season by taking second place in the conference. Just as though the Bobcats had planned it, each winning score ended with an eight and the sum of the winning scores also ended with an eight. SENIORS Dave Kramer, Rich Dufloth, Maurice Hoffman. Other towns competing were Highmore, Miller, McLaughlin, Mobridge, and Eureka. Bowdle's play entitled Father Lives With Seven Women cre- ated a chaos as the female pop- ulation continued to increase and Father couldn't seem to stand it anymore. Father was pleased when he learned all the circumstances behind it, he became a man instead of a mouse and decided to do things his way. The play director was Mr. Ulland. AMATEUR PLAYERS UTILIZE THEIR TALENTS On May 5, 1966, BHS held its second annual one-act play program. Included in this pro- gram were the sen- iors (left) with Along Came Harriet, and the sophomores (right) with Uninvited Ghost. Awards were given to Ronnie Mitzel and Mary Heckenlaible for best supporting actor and actress. Dean Shu- macher and Bonna Berg received a- wards for best actor and actress. 50 ADVERTISERS DR. F. A. The education which starts in the home represents the pillar's base. From here we go on to the shaft of formal education, made up of eight grade and four high school years. The capital which crowns the shaft indicates graduation from high school. The leaves that wind around the pillar are the extra-cirricular activities in which the students participate during their years of learning. The 1967 BOBCAT is a book which shows one year of the pillar of education at BHS. Its contents illustrate changes and im- provements which were made to help enrich our education. It also shows some of the activities which highlighted the year. Beyond this pillar lies the future of every student that graduates from high school. Each individual's success will depend upon the effort and determination he exercises in using his education. ; WAUWOMTM '■ nr 1 _ - ■ - -j ... v .HI + . - v 5 : •- _ - v v hL v . -J , aTt Sg2§£ m3 K2 '• ‘ Vv r r t, :: v. ’ v- w c, _ - — % N -. 7 _ « T ‘ ,w'' ' - - “' • 5 - - I ■ vv : .
