The 1965 BOBCAT Presented by Yearbook Staff BOWDLE HIGH SCHOOL The 1965 Annual Staff of Bowdle High School, under the supervision of Miss Olga Wagner, has tried to capture the features and activities of the '6U-65 school year. Using the school mascot Barney as our BOWDLE, SOUTH DAKOTA theme, we have dedicated many hours of hard work to depict these events in picture and word. In this way we hope it will be possible for you in future years to recall these memo- ries as they happened. Steiger, Mr. C. Schumacher, Clerk W. Schaible, Superintendent R. Putnam, Mr. A. Bauer, Mr. B. Bach- man. The Board of Education is the backbone of our school. They have the responsibility of determining how much money is to be spent on supplies for the school and the payroll of the teachers. It is their responsibility to establish all policies for the operation of the school. Through their work the school has come to be what it is today. Student Council Represents Student Body SEATED: Jerry Mitzel, Jerome Buechler, David Karst, Carolee Huft. STANDING: Tom Casey, Paul Bachman, Arvis Lemke, Maurice Hoff- man, Darrel Knudson, Bonna Berg, Advisor Mr. Wooledge, Diana Hoven. The Student Council helps the school in many ways. It helps by organizing the Homecoming festivities. This is probably its most important function of the whole year because it is almost 100 per cent responsible for its success. In addition to this ithas sponsored school dances and money raising projects during the past year. 2 The Senior Class of 1965 takes great pride in dedi- cating this annual to you, Mr. Robert L. Putnam. As Superintendent you have guided our school and helped each and everyone who was confronted by a problem. You have captured the respect and admiration of the entire student body of Bowdle High School. We hope that this annual will help to show you what an inspi- ration you have been to us. 3 In Memoriam When Death strikes down the innocent and young, for every fragile form from which he lets the panting spirit free, a hundred virtues rise, in shapes of mercy, charity, and love, to walk the world, and bless it. —Charles Dickens We, the Seniors of 1965, have used this page to pay tribute to our classmate Richard Joseph Dewald, son of Joseph B. Dewald, who died at the age of 16. Richard was a person who was liked by all, and it seems that these are the kind of people who the Lord calls Home early. He was a dependable worker and enjoyed working on his father's farm. He met his tragic death on July 20, 1961+, when the tractor he was driving overturned and pinned him beneath. Richard's memory will live forever within the hearts and minds of those who knew him. ■ mm «««ce - 1965 FRCU LTV Faculty Mr. Putnam Superintendent English II Helps Students Mr. Wooledge Principal Guidance Biology Eighth Grade Science Senior Class Advisor Student Council Advisor Mr. Dubs Driver Education U.S. History Physical Education Athletic Coach Miss Wagner Shorthand Typing I Office Practice Eighth Grade Math Annual Advisor Mr. Maslanka A Band B Band High School Chorus Freshman Class Advisor Mr. Wall General Math Seventh Grade Math Seventh Grade Social Studies Algebra I Seventh Grade Advisor Mr. Walter Eighth Grade Social Studies Eighth Grade English Seventh Grade English Government and Economics Grade Basketball Coach Eighth Grade Advisor Mr. Monfore Metal Technology Arts and Crafts General Shop Aviation Seventh Grade Science Junior Class Advisor Mrs. Keeley English I, III, IV Library Sophomore Class Advisor High School Paper Develop Higher Learning Mr. Youngman Geometry Advanced Mathematics Chemistry General Science Assistant Football Coach Personnel SECRETARY--Mrs. Putnam The person in the Superintendent's office behind the typewriter is very familiar to us. CUSTODIAN—Mr. Bonen Eleven years as a cus- todian is an excellent achievement. Throughout this time Mr. Bonen has worked hard from early morning to late at night to keep our school in tip-top condition. He is a friend of every- one and is willing to lend a helping hand. In its second year, the Dirigo (I lead) chapter of the National Honor Society has advanced its membership by receiving five new members. These students have earned admittance by maintaining a B average throughout high school and by meeting other require- ments such as leadership, character, and service. We feel the Honor Society has given students something worth-while for which to strive. __ 1. Musical setting depicts theme. 2. Orchestra sets musical mood. 3. The annual festival began Thursday evening with the coronation of Queen Ruth Mertz and King Jerry Mitzel. The royalty was attendedby Maryalice Iszler, Janice Barth, Jerome Buechler, and Cal- vin Sandmeier. After the traditional snake dance, the pep fest was held at the bonfire. On Friday afternoon of the 25th, Home- coming activities were continued with the football game between the Herreid Yellowjackets and the Bobcats. As the game progressed, the Bobcat powerhouse proved too much for the Yellowjackets. During half time the pep band displayed great talent and leadership as they did several maneuvers and played several selections. At this time the mystery Bobcat was revealed to the public. The score at the end of the game was 13-7. The two day activities were closed with a dance at the Bowdle Legion Hall.
