The old Bowdle school building was a two story, wooden structure. It had four outside doors, one on each side. An outside stairway was on the north side leading to the second floor class room. There was an entry, three large class rooms and two halls on the first floor. There were three similar class rooms and one small one on the second floor. There was a small basement under part of the building. The building had no modern conveniences such as plumbing, lights and heating system. It did not even have kerosene lamps. All programs and meetings were held during the day, All programs and meetings were held during the day, ex- cept for Commencement which was held in a public hall. A bell on top of the main part of the building was used to call school. Stoves in each room were used for heat and water was carried into the building. There were five grade teachers. Twenty to thirty was the average enrollment in the first grade. There were about twenty in high school. The graduating classes during these years were very small, averaging two or theee. It was decided in 1918 to build a new school as the old one was in very poor condition. While it was being built the lower grade classes were held in what was then known as the Opera House, now the Schaible garage. ' The eighth grade and high school classes were held above the Mertz Cafe. The construction of the new building began in the summer of 1918 and was finished in March 1919. The first year in the new school house there were seven graduates. Baccalaureate services were then held in the different churches. Subjects taught were four years of Latin, English, Mathematics, American English, Ancient and Medieval History, and Physical Geography. There were two high school instructors. There were 52 in the first grade in the new school which was the largest class in the grades that year. There were five grade teachers. There were only three school boazd members in those days. ' Many years later Cin 1937 and 19382, the auditori- um was built by W.P.A. workers. il ,ll ,Ill ciaab- Qimkk - .T nussf-uzli Jw-,...J fr sf T f 'ji Us J gt OTS 'I' is 'f 3'TH M ws 'Nl0un-.QNX Nelvin Rcbuck Salutstorian M Mixed Chorus M Band 3,14 Annual Staff M Quartet M Class Play 3,M Class President M Class Treasurer J Student Council Vice President 2 I'm a wolf alright, heart I'm a puppy, Alvin Kundert Valedictorian M Band 1,2,3,M Boys Quartet M Mixed Ensemble M Mixed Chorus M Class Treasurer M Basketball M Class Play 3,M Class President 3 Student Council 2 Annual Staff M Marshall Candidate 3 Boy's State 3 Duke Candidate M Intelligent, capable--- always on the job, 'R 2 Q DonElda Lange Queen Candidate 2 Glee Club l,M Mixed Chorus M Phys Ed. 2,M F.H.A. 3.U Band 2 Sec.Treaa. ' I see many blurred figures and then the vision clears-- I see Bill Dockter and his blonde wife running a propitious looking saloon. And now the vision changes and there I see Alvin Kundert---what is he doing? Ahh! He is surrounded by beautiful gals. He has now overshadowed Frank Sinatra's popularity as a swoon crooner. The scene is fading and now I see Elenora Mertz singing hillbilly songs at the Grand Old Opry---but she is not alone e 5 for her husband is giving orders. As we leave these two, e night club comes into view, and the hostess turns out to be Carol Gommet. We hear a beautiful voice and the spotlight '., turns on Lila Dumdie, a now very popular songstress. fd Now I see Nelvin Robuck and his family running from barn to shed wearing ten gallon hats which serve a good pur- pose on their dude ranch. The glass becomes clouded and another vision comes clear. I see Wesley Helmer before a church congregation laying down the law, while his wife is kept busy keeping I house and caring for the young ones. Q A' The vision becomes faint, finally it fades, then comes 1 41 again and I am now in Hollywood. There I am delighted to ,hy see Dale Oster surrounded by a bevy of actresses. He's ' X 4 Elaying a role written especially for either him or Dane 5 lark. M The crystal ball carries us to another place, where I see a large sprawling farm house and it looks like s party is in progress. But upon further investigation I see 2, 4, 6, 8, yes, 1t's 10 little kiddies clustered around their mother, lLucy Feiockj who is teaching them how to play a new game. Revealed before me now I see a 1959 convertible and in the car I see none other than Jayne Knee Hartzelll and her daughters apparently on the way to pick up her husband who is a lawyer. The crystal ball discloses a big neon sign which reads: 'CHICKEN RANCH---Proprietor, Darlene Albrecht.' N J Before me now I see a stage---the curtain slowly opens Q and there the latest fashions are being modeled by Allene Eisenbeisz. In my line of vision I now see great quantities of food ---mmm--mmm---looks mighty goodg and there I can see Shirley Delker, who is now employed by the Eat-A-Lot Food Corpo- ration Another glimpse into the future takes me to New York City and a New York Times paper flashes into view telling all about Mrs. Vonnie Stotz iNeed I say more?J who is a pop- ular society matron. Now I see two very familiar faces in the ball, and as more comes into view it looks like a wedding is in progress. I observe the ceremony and after they leave the ohurch,'r1ce I is showered on DonElda Lange and Cletus Huber. Suddenly there is an explosion, the crystal ball is shattered to a thousand bits, andI am brought back to real- ity and the present. In the years of 'M5 and 'U6 our group of eighteen made were carried through the Freshman Desert guided by H0- DUI' camel drivers ltggchersl, we were not caught in the sand storm of initiation as were many unlucky travelers before us, because our leader, Mr. Smart, took the precaution to avoid this difficulty. When we reached an inviting oasis. Ervin Buechler stopped off and did not rejoin the caravan. Seventeen travelers were happy when they reached the edge of Freshman Desert and gazed out upon Sophomore Plains where they were to continue their journey, At the city of Saddle Creek where we were outfitting ourselves for the trip over Sophomore Plains, a strange horse back rider galloped up and joined us. Shirley Delker traveled all the way across the plains with us. Loretta Miller enjoyed the educational opportunities of Saddle Creek so much that she stayed behind. The trip through the plains was a little more exciting than the last year's trip. About the middle of the year Delores Laesle left our party. As we came to the end of Sophomore Plains, Adeline Fleck was badly injured in an accident which left us with only fifteen to see the journey through. Looking ahead we anticipated the exciting trip over the Junior Mountains. We rested a week at Layzee Inn while our mules were being prepared for our trip over the Junior Mountains. The first lap of our journey went along smoothly. After travels ing about two and one half months we stopped at Play Inn. At this Inn we were asked to present a play. -The play we chose to give was UGrandad Meets a Paln. We enjoyed prac- ticing for this play very much and finally presented it on December ll. The journey was continued on through the Jun- ior Mountains with Bill Dockter as a new companion in our pack train. Proceeding on our way we came upon Clase Rock were we discovered some graduation rings for which we had searched diligently. Happily we went on our journey. Soon we started planning a feast and dance in honor of those who had struggled through the excitement of the rough Junior Mountains before us. It was a wonderful evening on May 13 when we danced to the music of Ray Palmer under the wide, blue, starry sky with a big romantic moon shining above us. This Gypsy Scene included a wishing well and a brightly burning fire. So we ended our journey over the Junior Mountains. We decided to get rid of the mules and clambered aboard a bus in which we drove into Senior City. We decided to stop at the Hollywood Studios to have pictures taken of our- selves, islxteen glamorous Seniors of coursel. Going on through the exciting city we stopped at the Little Theatre off Times Square and presented a comical play, NThe Awkward Pausen. we took our last bows and left the little theatre x to see the other sights in store for us. Sometime later the Illustrated Press called and told us to pick up our an- nouncements, which reminded us that we were nearing the end of our tour. . After being entertained at a banquet and prom by the Jun1ors3 we came to the very end of our journey were we be- held a beautiful scene. It was a street decorated in laven- der and white. Stretched across the street was a banner on which were lettered the words, nLove, labor, and 1augh.U AB we passed the city limits of Senior City, we paused and turned for a last lingering look at our wonderful high school days. x e.
