North, a key official in the plan to finance rebels in Nicaragua with money from arms sales to Iran, before the Iran-Contra Hearings in Washington. 2: A barge filled with 3,128 tons of garbage was banned by six states and three foreign countries before an incinerator reduced it to ash. 3: In the six years since Americans first heard of it, AIDS has killed nearly 25,000 Americans, millions of dollars have poured into medical research and President Reagan has proclaimed the plague “Public Health Enemy No. 1. 4: President and Mrs. Reagan greeted Pope Paul II when he arrived in Miami to begin a nine-city tour of the United States. 5: Liberace, the glittering showman and pianist, died of AIDS in February at age 67. 6: John Huston, who directed such films as “The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” died in August at age 81. 7: Jackie Gleason, the rotund “Great One” who got laughs as a blustering bus driver in The Honeymooners,” died in June at age 71. 8: Lome Greene, who for 14 years played on “Bonanza,” died in September at age 72. 2 1: Television evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker said farewell to the PTL ministry in March: Jim, after confessing to a sexual encounter with a young woman; Tammy to undergo treatment for drug dependency. 2: President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev held a three-day summit meeting in December and signed a nuclear arms control agreement. 3 4: Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart dropped his bid for the presidency after it was reported that he was romantically involved with Donna Rice; he later re-entered the race. 5: The Dow Jones dropped 508 points, the largest in history, on October 19. 6; Kirby Puckett and Jeff Raerdon of the Minnesota Twins celebrate their World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. 7: In an effort to keep the Persian Gulf open to navigation, the United States began in July to escort vessels to protect them from Iran. In September the U.S. Navy blew up an Iranian ship that was caught laying mines in the Gulf. ) The Class of 1988 will be the last class to go through Bourne High School as it now exists. Late in 1988 construction will begin on an addition to our school. Upon completion of the new structure and renovations to the present building, BHS will have nearly doubled in size, and many facilities will be available which we have sorely needed for many years. The most spectacular new areas in BHS may be seen in the first floor plan at the top of the previous page: in the center of the building, an Instructional Media Center and Library, surrounded by offices, conference rooms and a faculty work area, as well as an open courtyard; above the IMC complex, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 850, fully equipped for professional quality musical and stage productions; to the left of and connected to the auditorium, a large area for music instruction, complete with small practice rooms; completing this new wing, large areas for all types of industrial arts. The Industrial A rts and Music suites are adjacent to the auditorium to facilitate design and construction of sets and transportation of sets and musical equipment. Substantial space will be added to the gymnasium area, including team rooms, a training room, a corrective exercise room, and storage. Between B-wing and C-wing, installation of an elevator will enhance accessibility to our facilities for handicapped persons. There will also be an elevator from the cafeteria area down to the Art Rooms. Comprehensive renovations of the existing structure will alter many phases of life here at BHS. For the first time, each Department in the school will be centralized. The cafeteria’s size will be enhanced by the removal of the stage area; a faculty dining area will be added. On the “ground floor”, under the cafeteria, an Art suite and a Weight Training room will be constructed. A new Computer room will be added to the Math wing. Child Care instruction space will appear next to the Home Economics suite. Many new classrooms and much needed storage space will appear and many repairs will be made. The students, faculty, administration, and staff of BHS eagerly anticipate our new look. We wish to thank the citizens of our town for demonstrating their concern for education. MacKinnon Foreign Language FACULTY AND STAFF In Memoriam James McQuade Bourne Educator 1967-1987 Father Teacher Friend Mr. James McQuade, a very successful businessman, made an important decision in September, 1967. He decided to change careers and became a teacher. Entering his chosen profession as a grade four teacher at the Stone School, he eventually moved up to grade six. This quiet and self-assured man quickly established himself as a classic” gentleman whose family orientation and traditional values permeated his role as teacher and colleague. A subtle, dry wit and warm smile further characterized this “gentle” man. He would often speak with great pride of his three grandchildren, and his tales of fishing and flytying still echo in the teachers’ room. Many a student will recall with fond memories the special oriental dinner which evolved from Mr. McQuade’s social studies classes each year. We can still picture him in his ornate kimono walking among his students and chatting with them. Many others still will remember his greeting and recognition individually as he stood by the door each morning, with a, Hello, Beautiful! Hi, Handsome!” We, his colleagues, will never forget his penchant for organization and his systematic approach to everything. Elegantly gowned and tuxedoed students danced to the accompaniment of DJ Steve Binder and dined on a catered sumptuous buffet. Dinner was followed by more dancing, the crowning of the Queen and her Court, and a midnight change into less formal attire. In the wee hours of the morning, movies were shown in the cafeteria, while many naps were taken on gym mats. At 4:30 a.m. faculty chefs, demonstrating previously hidden culinary artistry, served the weary revelers a hearty breakfast.
