On August 12, 1984 Charlene was involved in an automobile accident that changed her life, her family’s, and her friends’. Since that tragic day she has not been able to attend school and will be unable to graduate with her class. We, the class of 1987, still consider her a part of our class, and have decided to show our admiration for Charlene and her family. But sometimes it hurts even more to think of you . . . your laugh, your touch and to remember just How much I miss your gentle face your tender ways your presence in my life. — Laine Parsons 6 r 7 T he evening of September 25, 1986 marked the birth of another tradition at BHS, when the first Academic Awards Banquet took place in the cafeteria. Faculty members selected students for recognition based upon merit; awards were given in many categories other than grade point achievement. Dinner for the School Committee, BHS faculty and administration, and honored students and their families was prepared and served by the Upper Cape Cod Regional Vocational- Technical School. Special awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement were presented to Linda Correia, Angela Dadak, and Jessie McQuaid. McHugh Guidance B ourne High School was fortunate to have as members of the Class of 1987 three exchange students: Nico Wohlschlegel from West Germany, Christine Lampe from Norway, and Kosuke Yamashita from Japan. Nico’s host for his year in America was the Savarese family of Pocasset; Christine spent her year with the Ward family of Monument Beach; Kosuke’s year was hosted by the Cundy family of Sagamore Beach. Each of these students participated in our school’s activities and utilized its facilities and opportunities to the fullest. Kosuke, Christine, and Nico enjoyed their classes and their fellow students; they particularly enjoyed our sports programs, which are not part of school life in their countries. Although all of our exchange students have missed their own families and friends, as they leave us to return to their homes, they will take fond memories of the United States with them. What will they miss the most about us? Their host families, their new friends, concerts, being able to select courses, and sports. What won’t they miss? School food. A great dinner was tollowed by an evening of dancing and socializing. Everyone, in- cluding the chaperones, had a memorable evening. O ne of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the Surprise Court, a first for the Senior Semi-Formal. The “Best Smile” awards went to Lisa Champagne and Ken Gelson. The honors for “Best All-Around Partier” were bestowed upon Jeff Alden and Kara Heckler. The “Best Table Hopper” titles were given to socialites Helen Albrecht and John Morrill. “Best Dancer” was awarded to Tom Grobleski and Felicia Tobey. Melissa Moffitt and Brian Barry took the category of “Best Dressed”. JUNIOR PROM T he Class of 1987 held its Junior Prom on June 13, 1986. The class voted not to hold an all-night Prom at the school, but an evening at Dunfey’s in Hyannis. Not only was there the traditional female court, but a male court, as well. Amy Fougere was crowned Queen of the Prom, and Matt Pilkington was crowned King. Lori Andrade was the Prom Committee Chairperson and Ms. Doherty was the advisor. SAVARESE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF lANAL CURRENTS STAFF T he 1986-1987 school year was a difficult one for yearbooks. In three Massachusetts communities, already-published books had to be recalled so that objectionable material which had slipped by the editors could be inked out by hand in each book. Here in Bourne, as is fitting for a quiet Cape Cod town, our problem was less sensational. Our problem can be clearly seen on pages four and five of this book: SNOW! There were several results of last winter ' s spectacular weather for students of Bourne High School. There were more snow days off from classes than anyone could remember ever having had. School was in session until June 24, 1987. And because of deadlines missed due to days lost to blizzards, the yearbook was published in the fall rather than in the spring. Were it not for the students pictured on these pages, and several people whose photos are not here. Canal Currents would not have appeared at all in 1987.
