3 0 k , 1 Q i o i 5 CURRENTS ’82 1982 Canal Currents Bourne High School Bourne, Massachusetts In the Fall, He’s the Grease Monkey for Cold Steel. In the Spring, he and his chaw head for the baseball field to lead yet another team. By day, he’s the English teacher telling students of the Wonders of Literature (The Great Gatsby). After hours, he’s father and husband to his family. Certainly by now, you have guessed that this baby-faced man, this teacher, coach, husband, father, and friend is Mr. Rainnie. For several years, his devotion, encouragement, and good humor have made him a favorite with teachers and students alike. Because of this, the Class of 1982 has chosen to dedicate their year- book to Mr. Michael Rainnie. Thanks, Mr. Rainnie, for all your support! Mr. Rainnie DEDICATION 2 Mrs. Gladys Burgess graduated from Simmons College with a Business and Science degree. She was employed by the school systems in the town of Bourne, Mashpee, and Sandwich for many years. She spent the last 13 years at Bourne High School as secretary to the princi- pal. This year she is working at the administration build- ing. Miss Lynette Holden recieved her B.S. and M.A. at Boston University. Miss Holden first taught BHS in 1948, serving as a science and gym teacher, as well as the coach for all girl’s sports. In 1957 she went to teach in Lexington, but returned to Bourne to become part of the guidance department. She has been part of BHS for 22 years. She retired at the end of this year and leaving no regrets. Mr. John Gray recieved his B.A. and M.Ed., at Provi- dence College and his C.A.G.S., at Boston University. Before coming to Bourne he worked at a small two- roomed schoolhouse in Freetown, MA, where he taught all subjects except music. When he first came to Bourne, Mr. Gray taught Latin, French, and English for eight years. He was also involved in Bourne’s extra curricular activities. He was junior prom advisor for 5 years and Yearbook advisor for six. In addition to this he also served as principal for a short time before becoming a guidance counselor and later heading the guidance de- partment. Mr. Gray retired at the end of last year and is currently involved with The Cape Cod And the Island’s Associ- ation. We would like to express our appreciation to these three people and also to the other teachers who are no longer at Bourne High School this year. We do not always have a chance to say it, but we recognize what an important contribution these people have made to our lives. APPRECIATION V FRESHMAN Remember: Our magazine drive, the classmen. Not only have these students proved themselves superior academically, but are exam- ples of citizenship and service. The NHS has spon- sered the Bloodmobile and sold holiday mums along with their traditional services of running the school store, providing tutors, saying the pledge, not to mention representing Bourne’s finest to other schools’ NHS groups through Honor Bowls. At the four-day conference, Dec. 10-13, with meetings at both Harvard Univ. and the Shera- ton in Boston, the delegates, each in different committees, discussed, made, and voted on res- olutions dealing with such world issues as apart- heid, science and technology, and migrant peo- ples. Along with hard work, preparation, and caucusing, the students gained valuable exper- ience in the use of parliamentary procedure and in the acknowledgement of current issues before the UN. The students undoubtedly en- joyed meeting people from all over the country and were glad to see that the serious Penguin rights situation, always a big concern through- out the world, was finally being discussed and acted upon!! 114 Math Team The Math Team, organized under Mrs. Linda Koulouris, travels to other schools to compete in mathematical skills. The team members run through a series of problems in order to score points. This group is comprised of talented students who try their best at some fairly hard problems of algebra, trigonometry and calculus. In addition, we express our appreciation to our year- book advisor, Ms. Sheila Whitehouse and our Jos- ten’s company representative, Mr. Norval Garnett for their enthusiasm, encouragement, and guidance. We would also like to thank Mrs. Buckley, Mrs. Gruner, and Mrs. Brown for the use of their rooms and also Mrs. Koronkiewicz for being so informative and help- ful in any extra instances. Speaking for the other staff members and ourselves, we appreciate the under- standing and patience of our teachers in allowing us time off to meet deadlines. Finally, we are grateful to the faculty and student body for their cooperation and for giving us so many photogenic faces. Without the help of these and so many others, the yearbook would not be as amusing or as memorable as we have strived to make it. Once again, we thank all of you and hope this 1982 Canal Currents will always be a reminding souvenier of one of the more exciting years of Bourne High School -. Christine Heym Nora Migliaccio The yearbook staff would also like to express our sincere thanks to our advisor and company representative. This yearbook would not be possible without their help and guidance. The staff thanks them for putting up with many frustrations, long hours, last minute dead- lines, all too frequent communications break-downs, and “plagues.” We would also like to thank individual members of the faculty and student body. We appreciate several coaches and teachers for giving us scores and information for write-ups. We thank Kathy Albrecht,, Anne-Marie Mosher, and Kelly Dodge for their help on various sections and on advertising. We are grateful for the last minute photography work of Don Currie, Steve Koff, and Larry Perry. These peoples’ assistance and contributions were greatly welcomed. Finally, we would like to thank the students and staff of B.H.S., who go unmentioned, for their active participation, assistance, and pa- tience throughout the school year.
