KALEIDOSCOPE 1978 CANAL CURRENTS Bourne High School Bourne, Massachusetts SENIORS FACULTY UNDERCLASSMEN ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISING 1 This yearbook is dedicated with love to the memory of our friends Fred Dunbury, Jr. and Sandi Walker. 2 Though we drifted apart in distance I always think of you as being right here Though we have different interests our experiences are still the same And though we have many new friends it is our old and continuous friendship That means the most to me 3 ka.lei. do. scope 1 : an instrument containing loose bits of colored glass between two flat plates and two plane mirrors so placed that changes of position of the bits of glass are reilected in an endless variety of patterns 2: a varie- gated changing pattern or scene 5 ' ' ’ ' ‘ ' %4 ■ Unless captured somehow, the ♦ - pattern is forever lost. Soon we will be among others, mak- ing a totally new formation. We have only the memory of the times we have spent together as a pattern, as our own unique kaleidoscope. Our dreams are our own. Our visions, no one else can see. Our actions, no one else can claim. What we are, no one else could ever be. tr SENIORS SENIORS SENIOR S SENIORS SENIORS SENI ORS SENIORS SENIORS SE NIORS SENIORS SENIOR SENIORS SENIORS SENIOR S SENIORS SENIORS SEN! Belliveau. Tri Captains Mark Hurle, Dan Smith, and Don Cyr. The Bourne High Cross Country team, in only their third year of existence, expe- rienced their best season ever with a 5- 1 conference record (6-3 overall) under Coach Mike Bigelow. That was good for second place during the regular season, and they finished third in the conference meet. They were led by All-Conference runners Dan Smith (second in the confer ence meet, 26th in the state) and Mark Hurle (4th in the conference meet, 25th in the state). It was the second time for Hurle, a senior, and the first time for Smith, a junior. They were ably backed by senior Don Cyr, juniors Cliff Moore, John Gaffney, and Shaun Ellis, sopho- mores Mark McMahon, Kevin Fuller, Peter Garland, and Jeff Reidy, and fresh- man Roger Arnold, while the girls were led by Amy Regan. All runners will be back except for Hurle and Cyr, so the tra- dition of fine cross country teams at Bourne High should continue. LtoR, 1st Row: L. Merritt, S. Donovan, E. Andrade. 2nd Row: D. Uitti, S. Therrien, P. Kostka, M. Gilmetti, J. Souza. Girls’ Volleyball, coached by Miss Judy Cox, was the newest sport added to Bourne’s schedule. The season was based upon learning the skills, knowledge, and concepts of the game. Both the varsity and the J. V. man- aged to win one game each. Co-Captain Janine Delouche leaves with five other seniors. However, Co-Captain Karen Moore remains with the skills to lead next year’s team on to victory. L to R: J. Delouche, K. Areno, S. With many hard fought losses, the team spirit still survived. J.V. coach Maureen Kearney did an excellent job with the young jayvees, molding them from mainly inexperienced newcomers to a group of sharp stick- handlers. For the varsity, the high point of the sea- J| son was the day they held Barnstable to a tie in a I ' l battle that left Barnstable totally frustrated and li Bourne exhilarated. With five seniors leaving, next year proves to be a challenge, but as always. Bourne i ' will rise to meet it with determination. I 104 Football Kneeling; K. Young, B. Cardoza, J. Fougere, J. Ever since 1 974 when we entered Bourne High we had hoped for a winning season and, more importantly, a win on Thanksgiving over Wareham. This year ' s team was surely the one to do it! With the infamous “Mung Zoo” leading the way, the 1 977 Canalmen not only amassed a 6-4 record, but also got a piece of the Division crown as well. Furthermore, we all know what happened on Turkey Day! In one of the season’s most exciting con- tests, the Purple Wave rolled over the Wareham Vikings 8-4. It was a most successful season for all con- cerned. The J.V. and freshman teams also did extremely well, and show a lot of promising talent for the years to come. Despite the fact that many senior veterans will be missing, next year’s team under Head Coach Bob Desaulniers should prove to be another champi- onship team. Congratulations! Defensive Team: Front: S. Kearney, J. O ' Keefe, G. Martinez, G. Sala, J. Burns, D. Doble. Back: J. Fougere, K. McMahon, N. Bevilacqua, S. Harrington, T. Norton, T. Nor- ton, K. Diefenbach, S. Kneeling: Tri-Captains Tom Norton, Joe Burns, and Steve Kearney. Stand- ing; Coach Robert Angelo, Coach Gerry Czarnetzki, Head Coach Bob Desaulniers, Coach Mike Rainnie, and Coach Len Desautels. The 1977-78 Bourne High Canalmen Basketball Team supplied Its loyal rooters with many thrills, as they had their best record in years. The season started with four non-conference wins including a thrilling OT victory at Nauset. Led by Senior Tn-Captains Bill Simmons, Jeff Crabtree, and Tom Norton, the team started the confer- ence season with a shot at the title. Included in the confer- ence season were many exciting games. Heartbreaking losses to Falmouth and Diman Voke (twice) dashed the hopes for a conference title. But the dramatic double OT victory against Falmouth and the come from-behind win over Dighton-Rehoboth (both at home) made up for any disappointments. The Canalmen will suffer from the loss of seven seniors including the Tri-Captains plus Bob Gendron, Jim Jawor- ski, Theo Moore, and Bruce Cardoza. Coach Mark South- worth can expect a fine team led by Tracy Williams, Dan McClung, Tim Norton and the many fine JV ' s developed by Coach Len Desautels. L to R: Coach Len Desautels, B. Kearney, S. Wetherell, M. McMahon, R.Ziemba, F. Graf, B. McCarthy, and N. Bevilaqua. Girls’ Basketball L to R, Kneeling: Co-Captains L. Burns, L. RItvo; K. LeBrun. Standing: K. Moore, P. Wetherell, D. LeBrun, L. LaFlamme, Coach Lindberg, J. Norton, S. LaFlamme, P. Purdy, J. Delouche. The Bourne Girls’ Basketball team is well on its way to its fifth straight division championship. The varsity stands currently at 9-2, and lead their league after sound defeats of D Y, Falmouth, and new league member Fairhaven. Even with seniors Lori Burns, Lee Ritvo, Kathie LeBrun, and Phyllis Cremonini leaving, next year’s team should prove to be a strong one, as the J.V. team coached by Bruce Gendron has amassed a perfect record of 1 4-0. This is largely due to the talent of the freshman team members. All in all, the future looks very bright. L to R, Kneeling: L. Prete, J. Cobb, C. Fisher, D. Allen, L. McMahon, P. Cremonini. Standing: Coach Gendron, L. Bradley, L. Smolinsky, L. Carpenter, K. Breault, S. Schaeffer, J. Fougere. Hockey L to R, Front: S. Ellis, D. Ariagno, J. Manamon, E. Anderson, B. Fountain, P. Hathaway, B. Puetz, R. Moroge, J. Farrell. Back: Coach Dineen, J. O’Neil, D, Leach, J. Lamken, A. Nelson, B. Murray, M. Sorenti, M. Hickey, D. Doble, Coach Glenn, R. Hopwood. Again this year, Bourne High’s hockey team has fared extremely well against all competitors. With Eric Anderson and Peter Hathaway in goal, opposing shoot- ers find it difficult to find the net. This is Coach Gerry Dineen ' s second year with the club, and although he is losing nine seniors, he should continue to come up with winning hockey teams. Seniors Jim Manamon, Eric Anderson, Bob Fountain, Bill Puetz, Jay Farrell, Bill Murray, Mike Sorenti, Mike Hickey, and Dan Doble will be missed. The J.V. team, though on a shorter schedule, has also done well this year, and many of the young players will move up next season. 1 fl i 1 (j| J Tri Captains Jim Manamon, Eric Anderson, and Bob Fountain. The Math Team, in its second year, hasn’t placed very high in the standings, but its members enjoy the keen edge of mathematical competition with other “geniuses.” The meets consist of five rounds of problems in the areas of general math, algebra one, geometry, algebra two, and trigonometry. The final round is a team question worth ten points. Bourne is ahead of arch rival Wareham, and should continue to creep up in the league standings. Mr. Cook is the advisor. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Debating Team, under the direction of Mr. Gregory, has had very little competition this past year. The topic for debate is open this year, so the debaters have to be prepared to give information accurately on any subject. This takes an extra quick mind as vyell as a fluency in speech to remain the successful force that they have been. So far they have had no problem. The Homecoming Dance, another yearly event put on by the Code Club, was well attended, and enjoyed by all in attendance. Future plans include a party tor the orphans at St. Mary’s and the yearly induction dinner. The Athletic Association with Mr. Hopwood can be seen at every basketball, football, and hockey game selling tickets and programs. This group of hard workers has done an exceptionally tine job throughout the year, and deserves a lot of credit. The newly formed Mountain Climbing Club with advisor Miss Brown has stirred quite a bit of interest in the student body. On good weekends in the spring and tall they can be found scaling the treacherous slopes in New England. Already conquered is New Hampshire’s Mt. Monadnock, and plans are being made tor a hike on Mt. This year we have been fortunate to have with us three foreign stu- dents as part of the student body. They have come here through the Youth for Understanding program, and will remain in the United States until some time this summer. Luis Pereira Lopes Filho, better known as Lou, comes to us from Sao carlos, Brazil. He has stayed with the Tomlinson family in Saga- more Beach. Luis likes hunting game. He also enjoys swimming, soccer, and volleyball. His favorite subject here is math. After having seen snow for the first time, Luis has decided that he hkes the win- ters up here. Fridtjof Graf, or Fred as we Americans say, is from the town of Langenfeld, West Germany. Fred has done a lot of traveling here, as he has stayed with that Swardstrom family in Pocasset as well as the Tomlinsons in Sagamore Beach. He has relatives in New York and California, and hopes to make a trip to the West Coast before-return- ing to Langenfeld. Fred enjoys sports, especially soccer, volleyball, and basketball, and often goes kayaking with his brother. He has played basketball with the high school team. Fred likes the U.S., and hopes to return here in three years when he has finished his school- ing. Juan Zapatil Pereira de Araujo, called more simply Juan, comes from Brasilia D. F. in Brazil. He is staying at the home of the Robert Grays in Sagamore. Juan likes parties, biking, and fishing. He also has enjoyed having snow on the ground. For exercise he finds volley- ball, soccer, and running to be his strong points, and he plans to go out for track in the spring. Juan’s favorite subject is mechanical drawing, and he, too, finds the people very friendly. Exchange Students Picture Editor Lee Ritvo, Special Editor Donna Harrison, L to R, Sitting: J. Cook, P.
