DEBATING CLUB Two teams, the Varsity ahd the Novice, make up the Bourne High School Debating Club this year. A dormant Southeastern Massachusetts Debating League has narrowed the chances for the usual keen competition found in 8-school debate, but Captain Mary Bettley is honing the cutting edge of Bourne ' s verbal sword by taking on any and all challengers in practice rounds at both levels of debate. Falmouth High School will be the first to throw down the gauntlet in wordy combat. Pat Scammon, ex-Varsity debater, is working with Mr. Gregory, Club Advisor, as assistant judge. Mary Bettley is an assistant coach. L to R: Advisor Mr. Gregory, P. Scammon, S. Monast, B. Sullivan, M. Swift, L. Wuetrich, M. Yohai, M. Bettley. V ' DRAMA CLUB New to the Bourne High School scene this year is the Drama Club. Competing against established organizations for time and membership, the Club is working on an experimental one-act play and , with its subsequent presentation, hopes to pro- duce a series of short scenes, etc. , for classroom consumption. Trips to local theaters, theatrical workshops, and all sorts of student dramatic involvement are forecast for the neat future. Chief thespian is Nancy Vernooy, assisted by Mr. Gregory . Quality is not necessitated by quantity, and this year ' s majorette squad proves it. Autumn Girls in flowing dresses with Sunday-best dressed boys glided up the stairs and through the doors into the cafetorium which was transformed into a beautiful autumn picture. Rio” started the dance off with a bang and kept the homecoming excitement building through the night. Finally, the time for the crowning of the Queen arrived and the court, followed by wistful and admiring eyes, was announced. Queen Mary Consoni and escort Steve McCarthy led the court in a lovely dance and then all of the other rested couples once again livened up the dance floor. All too soon, it was time to leave and the couples descended slowly down the stairs after an enjoyable evening for all. Homecoming Football Game Spirits for the homecoming were boosted tre- mendously by the thrilling victory over long time rival Barnstable. 86 VICTORY! He has been the advisor for both the yearbook and the Dispatch, for several years. Mr. Gaylord is always ready and willing to help in any way he can. For those of you who may not be familiar with him, just take a look in 23C dur- ing the day and you ' ll notice a smiling and friendly man. The class of ' 77 wishes you the best, Mr. Gay- lord! A part of Bourne. 107 Football 1976 Bourne High ' s football record of 3-5-1 was better than was expected of this young team, who with a brand new coaching staff made great improvements over the last couple of years. The coaching staff consisting of Bob Desaulniers, Head coach, who was an assistant coach at Woburn High which was a Superbowl team, along with Mike Rainnie and Len DeSautels as assistants, were all fine first year coaches at Bourne High. The team, captained by Geoff McCarthy, along with the other senior players all played a large pan in this year ' s success. Seniors of this year ' s team had many things to be thank- ful for, one being the first victory in twenty games Bourne winning against DY, 36-6. Other victories came in games against Martha ' s Vineyard, 13-0, and Barnstable, 8-7, and one tie against the Powerful Dighton-Rehoboth team, 6 - 6 . Geoff McCarthy 108 Cross Country The cross country team had a very fine season as its 5-2 record indicates. Co-Captains Richard Cox and Martha Snow and their teammates finished third in the league standings and ninth in the conference meet. Although four seniors are leaving, next year ' s team looks promising with Mark Hurle and Ken Miller as well as many other strong runners returning. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM, L to R: D. Davis, R. Rose, M. Ormond, T. Norton, K. Millet, A. Joyce, M. Hurle, D. Smith, M. Hallam, P. Garland, J. Gaffney, K. Fuller, D. Cyr, T. Coniveau, M. Begley, R. Regan. GIRLS ' CROSS COUNTRY TEAM, OPPOSITE P AGE, L to R: M. Snow, D. Branco, C. Btons- don, K. Dalton, A. Regan, D. Stevens, L. LaFlamme. Field Hockey This year’s varsity girls field hockey team had a much better season than their 1-5-4 record indicates. Many games in the loss column were very close and the number of ties shows the competitiveness of the Bourne team in their difficult league. The JV’s had a very good season winning over half of their games. The loss of goalie Pam Tobey, as well as five other seniors, will hamper next year ' s squad, but the talent of the remain- ing varsity and upcoming JV players will hopefully lead to an improvement of this year’s overall record. Captain Richard Cox, Neal Wetherall, Bob Martinez, and Doug Rus- sell will leave the team with some rebuilding to do, but the fine work of the junior members and up coming JV’s will pro- vide Bourne with a well-rounded team next year. The JVs had a fine season coached by Mr. Len Desautels ending up with a winning record. TOP RIGHT: VARSITY SQUAD: L to R, FRONT: T. Moore, R. Chapman, N. Wetherall, R. Cox, B. Martinez, ]. Jaworski. Girls ' Basketball For the fourth straight year, the girls ' basketball team won its division title, this year with a 9-1 league record, 14-6 over all. Coach Nancy Lindberg ' s team has qualified for the state tournament also for the fourth straight year. Co-Captains Pam Tobey and Paula Mor- etta, Jane Parker, Martha Snow, Laura Millet and Bonnie Cook as seniors leave room for upcoming JV’s who should provide Bourne with another title next year. The JV team also had an excellent season. 17-3, coached by Mr. Bruce Gendron. Captain Lee Ritvo and the team tied for first place in their league. TOP RIGHT VARSITY SQUAD: L to R, FRONT: M. Snow, J. Not only that, they are first in their division and have qualified for the state tour- naments. Coach Gerry Dineen ' s team had a 9-1-2 league record being 16-3-2 overall. This record indicates the hard work put fonh by Captain John Forni, Ron Ariagno, Arkey Endres, Keith Gilmetti, JohnGoward, Buddy Manamon, Chuck Merritt, Mitch McCulloch, and goalie Jim Mulcahy. Junior Bob Fountain had an outstanding year leading the SMC II league with 28 goals and 17 assists. Overall he tallied 44 goals and 24 assists. With Foun- tain, goalie Eric Anderson, and many other fine players returning next year, the prospects for another winning season are promising. FRONT, L to R: A. Nelson, B. Fountain, J. Farrell, J. Tri-captains Katie Dalton. Chris Kelly, and senior Una Williams led their team under Coach Gwen Williams while Coach Jerry Czarnetski ' s boys followed Tri-captains Charlie Garland. Richard Regan, and Chuck Merritt. These young t eams have excelled potential for bettering this year’s records next year. The All-Conference representatives were Mark Hurle and Karen Moore. Unfortunately they were eliminated in a very close first round tournament game. Captains Scott McCollum and Geoff McCarthy and Seniors Dave DuBerger. .Alec Joyce, .Arkey Endres, Joe Fougere, Ron Chapman, and Jeff Billard leave Coach Mike Rannie ' s team. Strong performances by returning varsity starters and upcoming J ’ will make for an equally successful season next year. Mitch {1.3-7-0), Bourne s Captain, led the team tigainst several of Southeastern .Mass ' most talented golfers. He competed in th. Stat. Schoolboy Tournament and finished runner-up in th. Cape Cod Schoolboy Championship for the second straight year. Steve ilS- ' l-l), the team ' s most valuable player, came through with several steady performances. He should be ranked high among th. confer- ence players in his senior year. John Coward (9-7-0) was a member of the golf team throughout his high school career. He earned a reputation as one of the finest area golfers dur- ing the schoolboy season and summer tournament play. Mike Hickey (11-6-2), after missing his sophomore year, teamed with .Mitc h to win many important first flight matches. Junior Kim Young 1 10-10-0) and sophomore Chris Denmark (S-G-1) were also Varsity members who often contributed to the teatn ' s winning season. ” Larry Garbacik (9-8-2), a junior, played in many Varsity matches dur- ing the past two years. His big win over Falmouth really started the late season momentum. Remaining team members were senior Jim Mulcahy (6-7-0), sophomore Dana Leach (3--1-1), and freshman Jim Baugh (3-12-0). .Although Coach Vern Costa and volunteer assistant Rod Weston were disappointed by this year ' s slow start, they ' re both hoping the team ' s recent success of five victories in the last six matched will continue into the 1978 season. All Conference Representative was Mitch McCulloch. TE.A.M, L to R, KNEELING: D. Leach, J. Baugh, C. Denmark and K. Young. BACK ROW: Coach Costa, J. Mulcahy, S. Pescosolido, M. Hickey, L. Garbacik and Coach Weston. SOFTBALL The Girls’ Softball team ended its season with a 2-8 league record, but this young team should be proud of the unending determination and sportsmanship which they displayed throughout the season. Tri-Captains Bonnie Cook, Melinda Purdy, and Claudia Roth will leave Coach Cox ' s team, which should have a better record next year as the experience of returning varsity player ' s back up the strong pitching of Donna LeBrun and Pam Purdy. .All Conference representative was Bonnie Cook. The boy ' s tennis team led by seniors John Ahern, Earl Wheeler, and Terry Westgate had a rather disappointing season going winless. Coach Peter Stephens should have an improved team next year as many promising underclassmen as well as returning varsity members hope to convert their experience into a winning season .
