VARSITY SCHEDULE Bourne 12 14 0 6 14 0 0 0 0 Old Rochester D-Y Cose Foirhoven Bishop-Stong Seekonk Falmouth Coyle Worehom The Bourne High Conolmen started their football season with a bang. Compiling two straight victories and a tie in the first three games. Bourne’s great pride showed in these games as all three were shutouts for the Bourne defense. But injuries to key football players 0 forced them to play their untested, inexperienced players. 0 This didn ' t sway the pride and determination that this year ' s team 0 had. As the season progressed, hard fought losses took their toll and 14 Coach Russ Burns decided this would be his rebuilding year. After 18 many victorious seasons, this year’s gridiron Canalmen team was the 0 first year Coach Burns didn’t have a winning record. But the Varsity 34 club consisted of young undergraduates, who will be playing again 27 next year. The experience gained this year could catapult Bourne to 14 the top again. The 1975 Freshman Football Team 58 WE GOT THE PEP. . . Co-Captoins — Kerry Eischied and Debbie Tobey with advisor — Mrs. Iwasko. With a new squad of girls this year, the peppy cheering squad was very active. They gave many a good rowdy pep rally and cheered on the football team every game with much spirit. Starting out late in the summer of ’74, the girls practiced practically every other day. Under the direction of Mrs. Iwasko, the girls got together and spread the school spirit everywhere. Co-captains this year, Debbie Tobey and Kerry Eischeid, both Seniors, kept the squad in line and their toes. Other squad members were: Seniors — Vicky Bevelaqua, Juniors — Lori Belli- veau, Joan Burns, Karen Martin, Carol Koronkewictz, Pat Doyle, Sophomores — Kathy Lem- eron, and Cindy Dunbury. The donee started at 8 and ended at 1 1 . The night started with 1 17 couples, working its way up to 135. The night was a big success. The band Hush” was a big hit and all through the night there was a good crowd on the dance floor. The chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Iwaszko, Mr. McCarthy, and the Code Club Advisor, Miss Rice. At 1 0:00 Mr. Cook announced the court with Jackie Embrescio and Kerry Eischeid handing out the roses. The court was introduced by classes starting with the Sopho- mores and thei r escorts, Liz Abromovoge and her escort John Miglioccio, and Lynn Ciolkowski and her escort Steve Zovrid. The Juniors were the next to be introduced, Karen Martin and her escort Mark Wenzel and Potty Zum- stein and her escort Pot Koronkiewicz. Lost but not least, the SENIORS were announced. The Senior court consisted of Pom Handy and her escort, Tom Rafferty, Pom Sund- mon and her escort, George Pearson, and os the reigning Homecoming Queen, Julianna Romos escorted by Warren Ingram. The Seniors Debbie Morretta The Bourne High Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey Team finished in second place with 1 2 points and posted a 5-3-2 record, but it wasn’t quite enough to catch Dennis-Yar- mouth who collected 1 9 points for first place. The highlight of the season was that Bourne was the only team in the league to tie D-Y and to keep them from gaining a perfect record. The future field hockey squads in the up-coming years should have a goal-scor- ing offensive-minded front line while being backed-up with a quick aggressive defense. To lead the attack for the Bourne scor- ing was Sue Burns with 2 goals — 3 assists, Debbie Moretta with 2 goals — 2 assists, Mary McMahon with 1 goal — 2 assists and Barbara Brush with 3 assists. As the season ended. Bourne had 2 play- ers, Barbara Brush and Debbie Morretta, who were selected to play on the all-star team. Crabtree. Seniors r The Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team started the 1 974-75 season with an excit- ing overtime loss against Sandwich. This game, like three others, was decided by a one point margin. This showed the tough team Bourne had. High scoring efforts con- tained through the season with senior guard Joey Johnson having the highest point total for a single game with 31 points. Midway through the season. Bourne ' s loss column was more than the wins, but four consecutive victories over D-R, Coyle, D-Y, and Old Rochester seemed to fill the young team with confidence. Their over-all record was 7 and 14 but the desire and effort they had is not shown in their record. The Canalwomen won the S.M.C. division race with a 10-0 record. The girls ' overall record was 14-0 as they beat Sandwich, Norton, Harwich, and Nauset in non-league play. Bourne Girls set a new record as they were the first girls’ basketball team to go undefeated throughout the season. Their only losses came at the hands of Martha’s Vineyard in the Principals’ Tourna- ment for first place in the Cape and Island race. The second loss came from the Brockton five in the quarter-finals of the Southeast- ern Mass Tournament after the Canalwomen had beaten Hull in the first round. Quarterbacking the girls’ team were the guards consisting of Mary McMahon, Barbara Brush, Stacey Handy, and Bev Fernandes who had quick hands and speed to match. Centers Donna Edwards and Pam Tobey who controlled the rebounding department all year round with forwards Sue Burns and Gerri Embrescia helping out. Other forwards Doris Goryl and Debbie Morretta made up the scoring drive. This year’s team was evenly balanced in every cate- gory. Our Junior Prom, held at the Holiday Inn in Hyannis, was the event most looked forward to all year. With the help of Prom Chairman, Holly Mercier and her committee, it was a great success. The room was beau- tifully decorated with floating candles, in large brandy snifters surrounded by flowers as centerpieces. The music was provided by Fate. Queen Pam Handy and Court were announced and they danced to the theme song Time in a Bottle.” The night was to be a very memorable time for all who attended. 82 QUEEN PAM HANDY If I could save Time in a Bottle, the first thing that I’d like ta do Is to save every day ' til eternity passes away . . . ADVISOR: Mr. Gaylord Well, though it was a long, hard struggle, we made it, at last. Not many people really realize how much time and effort is put into the yearbook. There are many things to be done by the staff. Among them are Art Editor, Wendy Laughton, whose job is to supply us with drawings and sketches. Our Sports Editor, Jay McGillicuddy, whose job was to give us the information to complete the sports pages. Kim Nelson, our Business Man- ager, handled the money and finances. Mark Taylor, Sales Manager, and Mary McMahon, our Advertising Manager, worked very hard with Rick DeBoer, R. Pedersen, B. Beagle, C. Towne, and P. Towne getting the advertisements to help finance the yearbook. And finally our Associate Editors, Yvonne Tobey and Kerry Eischeid, and our Editor, Holly Mer- cier, whose jobs were to do all the typing, laying out of pages, trying to keep up with the schedule, and all the other dirty work. Yes, the yearbook is a lot of hard work but it’s worth it! All | of us from the 1 975 Canal Currents Staff hope you have i enjoyed reading the finished product. 1st ROW: W. Moreland, K. Nelson, H. The Varsity happily welcomed an impres- sive and capable freshman Steve Pescoso- lido, and, in post-season play, John Goward finished well in the State Schoolboy Qualify- ing Tournament and Mitch McCulloch placed sixth in the Cape Cod Schoolboy Champion- ship. This year’s team, comprised of all under- classmen, gained much experience that should prove valuable in the coming years. BOURNE HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM 1 975 FRONT ROW, L to R: J. Lindstrom, D. Varsity Softball This year’s girls softball team did not go undefeated or play in a tournament. What they accomplished can ' t be measured by their record. The backbone of the team were all underclassmen: Jackie Cook (freshman), Melinda and Sue Burns (juniors), all of whom will be back next year which promises to be another very good season. Next year BHS will hopefully be in a different league division more suited to our class. The team exceeded everyone’s expectations by winning thirteen of those matches and in doing so they established themselves as one of the best tennis teams in the Cape Cod area. Leading players on the squad were jun- ior co-captains, Mike Diefenbach and Ricky Joy. Other top players included; jun- iors, Pat McCahill, John York, Lee King, Jamie Dalton and David Lonergan; Sopho- mores, Terry Westgate, Marce Oliva and Keith Gilmetti and Freshmen Roger Clapp and Joe Burns. The team looks forward to another fine season next year when they will be com- peting in the Southeastern Mass. Confer- ence. Terry Westgate, David Lonergan, John York, Jamie Dalton, Coach Stephen, Roger Clapp, Lee King, Mike Diefen- bach. Girls’ Tennis In their first year the girls’ tennis team competed in the Southeastern Mass. Conference — Eastern Division. The team finished fifth in the conference with a 2-8 record but improved their overall record to 6-8 by posting a 4-0 mark in non-league action. Leading the team were seniors Jayne Enos, JoAnne La Fratta, Lynda Landry and Bev Fernandes. Other top players were juniors Pam Mula and freshmen Chris Col- lins and Marie Joyce. Jo Anne LaFratta who played No. 1 singles was selected to the conference all-star team for her excellent play during the season. Tennis has become a popular sport at Bourne High School. This became apparent when nearly 60 boys and girls turned out in the wind and cold of March to make the team. It became necessary to utilize the courts in Buzzards’s Bay in order to provide everyone court space to practice on. The enthusiasm displayed by members of both the girls’ and boys’ teams throughout the season has given everyone at BHS reason to believe that tennis is here to stay. Though fun jokes and chuckles were made, there was also a time ' for seriousness as the 1 975 Canal Currents was proudly presented to Mr. Clifford Wilbur — much to his surprise. The day was a suc- cess and the excitement grew for the night to follow. ‘ Swaying down the aisles of the Massachusetts Maritime Acad- emy gymnasium to the melody ‘‘Pomp and Circumstance,” realiz- ing that this may be our last time together, lumps formed in our throats and tears began to flow. Politely we listened to the class speakers realizing that our high school years were very near an end. The soon-to-be graduates trying to appear patient, fidgeted up until the moment they would have their diploma clutched in their hands. The auditorium was filled with a multitude of emotions as we took that final walk together down the aisles. We say our sad- happy farewell to old friends and Bourne High. W N . Once you get out there and find it a rough climb. Don’t worry baby, the spirit of “76” is not far behind. Good luck in whatever you do. And don’t forget “76” is right behind you.
