Curtis, Business Manager; C. Harasiak, Art Editor; D. Reardon, Advertising Manager; K. Tucy, Associate Editor; F. Rose, Editor. Few people realize how much time and work go into the pages of a yearbook. There are many jobs to be done by the staff. Among them are Sports Editor, Scott San- ford. It ' s up to Scott to give us the informa- tion necessary to write our sports pages. Our Sales Manager is Valerie Holmes. Val must sell subscriptions and see to it that our sub- scribers get their books. Kathy Curtis is our Business Manager. Kathy handles the money and finances. Cindy Harasiak covers the Art Editor ' s job by supplying us with drawings and sketches. Denise Reardon is in charge of selling advertisements. These ads are very important because without them we ' d have no money to produce the book. And finally our Editor, Faith Rose and Associate Editor Kyle Tucy. They must do all the writing, typing, spacing, and laying out of the year- book. As we said before, it ' s a lot of work, but it ' s worth it! The 1974 staff hopes you en- joy the finished product. Well, to many of us seniors, that someday has come. Look- ing back we realize how much we really owe one man. For that reason— We, the graduating Class of 1974 wish to dedicate our 1974 Canal Currents yearbook to MR. RUSSELL E. BURNS ■-Ill Mr. Burns has served us in our years at Bourne as a guidance counselor, as Assis- tant Principal, football coach, and as a fri- end. As Assistant Principal, he has more than done his job a thousand times over. His contributions as a football coach have been nothing less than fantastic, and any- one who knows football, will agree. Last but not least, he, in his own special way, has been a good friend to all of us. He has helped us to be proud of who we are and what we are. He has taught us to learn from our mistakes and to go out and do what ' s right. We have learned from him to stand up for what we believe in and to hold our heads high with pride. With this in mind, we leave Bourne High, knowing that we knew a great man who had done a lot for us. From our hearts we can truly say— Thank you Mr. Burns!! I 1 5 When we were Finky Freshmen . . . The 1973 Bourne High Canalmen had perhaps the finest year since 1968, when they won the state Class C i championship. This year the Canalmen, trained by Head ; Coach Russ Burns, finished the season with a fantastic 8-1 record. They held the SMC Division II championship with a record of 5-0. They were also the best team on the Cape and for 5 straight weeks held the No. 1 berth in the Division III ratings in the state. Leading the Canalmen this year were quarterback Dan Sweeney and running back Mike Roberts. George Diefenbach and Jim Bronsdon also helped to put the powerful offense together. Holding up the defense and limiting the opposition to only 76 points to Bourne ' s 231 were Richard Tavares, Ed Gendron, Dale Burtyk, ; and Jim Burgess. These players were all seniors and they made the all-star squad of the SMC Division II team. The Purple Wave really played some great games as the 54-6 massacre of Bishop Stang and the clo se 7-6 tip over Falmouth showed. Bourne had 4 shutout games i out of 9 which was a fantastic statistic for one season. Bourne ' s last game against Wareham turned out to be the only loss of the season. The Canalmen really tried but fate just seemed to be against them. I The seniors will be sorely missed next year but there i are many juniors like Jay McGillicudy, Charlie Cox, George Seaman, Greg Baker, Lenny Cubellis, Butch Mer- i ritt, and Tommy Laughton to take their places. We thank the Canalmen for another fantastic year in football. Bourne High ' s JV ' s finished the sea- son with stunning wins over Barnstable and Wareham, and a tie with Falmouth to end their season with a 4-2-1 record. The Canalmen were paced this year by quarterback Tom Laughton, running backs Charlie Cox and Mike Cook, and a stingy defense which allowed the oppo- sition very few opportunities. Bourne ' s big wins were over arch rival Barnstable 28-22 and traditional rival Wareham 26-0. Wareham was previ- ously unbeaten and unscored upon, but Bourne got three touchdowns from Laughton and another from Cook to give BHS its upset win. In the tie against Falmouth, Aaron Tobey intercepted a Falmouth pass and raced in for the ty- ing touchdown. We wish the guys a lot of luck next year! Good luck to Coach McCarthy and next year ' s squad. Football Banquet Ends a Successful Season! The Bourne High Pigskin Club held its third annual awards banquet in December. Club President Len Bur- gess acted as master of ceremonies for the evening. All the coaches and their wives were seated at the head table along with guest speaker, Mr. John Anderson, head foot- ball coach at Brown University. After the dinner was served the thank-you speeches and awards were given. Small charms were given to the cheerleaders who helped support the team throughout the entire season. Co-captains Richard Tavares and Dan Sweeney gave Coach Russell Burns a bronzed football. They also gave Rusty Burns a gift for his helpful efforts to the team. Mr. Burgess then took the podium to present special plaques to the eight seniors who made the SMC Division II all-stars. Mr. Burns then presented the coaches awards to those who really worked hard to earn them. The Unsung Hero award went to Jim Bronsdon, the defensive lineman award to Ed Gendron, the offensive back award to Mike Roberts, the most valuable player in the Wareham game was Dan Sweeney, and the team ' s most valuable player award went to three teammates, Dan Sweeney, Mike Roberts, and Ed Gend- ron. Mr. Burgess then introduced Mr. Anderson who talk- ed about the pride of a football team. He ended his talk by saying that the spirit shown at the banquet was unsurpassed by anything else. Mr. Burgess then ended the affair with praise for the football team, the cheer- leaders, the Shawne Band, and the majorettes. It was a lovely way to end the football season. The cheerleaders rushed into a very pepped up year equipped with new uniforms, new cheers, and a new team to cheer for. This year the girls were very excited about the football season and helped to lead the team on to each victory with the familiar cry, Na-na-na-nobody messes with the Big Purple Wave! . After senior Co-captains Faith Rose and Janette Sorenti went up for a Cheerleader Day at the University of Massachusetts, they came back to teach the girls some of the new things they had learned. They introduced some new college-type cheers that had a lot of song and dance in them and added more pep to the games and pep rallies. Spirit Day 1973 turned out to be a big success after many weeks of hectic preparations by the girls. The Thanksgiving Day game came and went and the girls never lost faith in our team or our fans that backed them. Basketball season rolled around and the girls were very excited about the prospective team. Travelling to the away games turned out to be a real blast and the herd of faithful fans was enormous! They helped the cheerleaders out a lot and they really showed the other schools that Bourne High had a lot of spirit! No one will ever forget when the spirited Bourne fans sung the National Anthem at the Old Rochester gym!! The spirit and pep that the cheerleaders showed, after all the long hours of practicing and preparing for games and pep rallies, could never be replaced by anyone less than devoted to their school and team. The girls hostessed their own Bourne Major- ette Tournament. Besides the regular batons, they added some spark to their rountines with hooped batons and lighted ones. The first half showed great promises to Bourne ' s new varsity coach Don Belli-” veau with eight wins to two losses. Three of these wins were exciting as well as 4 victorious because they were decided by one point. But then midway through the.ij ' season the Canalmen spirit was broken i when they suffered a very undeserved I loss to Norton. From then on the odds I changed and Bourne lost six of their : remaining nine games. This year ' s Junior Varsity team, under Coach Mark Southworth, maintained an unbe- lievable record by staying undefeated in all 20 matches this season. Bourne ' s closest game was their second meeting with Coyle. Coyle held them down 22-16 at halftime, but the Canalmen Jr ' s made up for their previous mistakes and went on to win at a close 45-42. Another problem for Bourne was Wareham. It appeared the Vikings had the game secured until the fourth period when Mark ' s Men poured in 20 points to win the game, 51-47. A couple of easier numbers for Bourne were Chatham 80-21 and Provincetown 78-32. Coach Southworth ' s usual starting five were sophomores Jim Chickering, Pat Bars, Tom Lang, Pat Ormond, and freshman Ricky Cox. Mike Harrington and Jamie Dalton also saw a lot of action this season. With a JV team like this one. Bourne ' s future Varsity ought to be really something. Most Junior Varsity teams don ' t get much recognition, but this one certainly deserves a lot. The cheerleaders clad in rolled-up jeans, bobby socks, and pom-poms bee-bopped into Rocka, Rocka and the majorettes in equally stunning outfits did a routine. Then, just for fun the cheerleaders took over the batons, and the majorettes led the cheer When your hot, your hot! . The color guard gave us a sample of the Wareham game and the majorettes gave us a preview of the funeral following it. Then it was back to the Fifties as Rick Duffy and Kyle Tucy played a young couple involved in the fateful love affair of a take-off from the old favorite Leader of the Pack (with Terry Cote and Kathy Fougere handling the back-up). That struck something in the senior guys and They Got ROWDY . O Varsity Baseball 1974 Moe Martineau George Diefenbach The Bourne Higlr baseball team had one of its most successful seasons in recent years, finishing as co-champions with Wareham of Division 111 of the Southeastern Mass. League. They competed in the Eastern Mass. State Tourna- ment and defeated Nauset Regional and Bishop Stang High Schools before losing to St. Patrick’s of Watertown in the semi-finals. The potent Bourne hitting attack (.342 team average) was led by Bill Mc- Malion (.455) and Dan Sweeney (.404). Dan had a total of twenty-five hits including three doubles, six triples and two homeruns with 28 RBTs. Bill had 21 hits including three doubles, one triple and three homeruns with 20 RBI’s. George Diefenbach (.333) chipped in with three doubles, three triples and four homeruns. Overall the team hit 25 doubles, 16 triples, and 14 homeruns. Bob Martineau led the pitching staff with a perfect 5-0 record and an 0.80 ERA. Sophomore Pat Ormond was 2-0; Moe Martineau, 3-1 ; and George Diefen- bach (most innings pitched) 4-2. AS a fitting climax to a most successful season, the following Bourne players were named to the Southeastern Mass. Division 111 All-Conference Team and received Honorable Mention on the Boston Globe’s All-Scholastic Team: Co-Captain Ed Gendron Catcher George Diefenbach 1st Base Tom Laugliton 2nd Base Bill McMalion Shortstop Mike Roberts Outfield Co-Captain Dan Sweeney Outfield Mike Roberts Outfield Co-Captain Dan Sweeney Outfield Co-captains Ed Gendron and Dan Sweeney, along with George Diefenbach and Bill McMahon were named to the Cape Cod Standard-Times All-Cape Team. BACK; Coach Mark Soutlnvorth, Bob Vallesio, Mike Diefenbach, Steve Smolinsky, Butch Merritt, Cliarlie Cox, Tom Crosbie, Joe Joyce, Alan Bourne. Under JV Coach Mark Southworth, the Junior Varsity Base- ball team compiled a very good 7-5 record including six victories in the last seven outings. Particularly impressive was the ability of the team to come back and thrash opponents to whom th ey had lost earlier encounters, whipping Westport 17-1, New Bedford Vocational 10-7, Norton 1 1-0 and Diman Voke 4-1 on the second go round. Aces of the pitching staff were Tom Crosbie and Ron Summer- lin while the leading power hitters were Charley Cox and Butch Merritt. Consistent and timely hitters were Steve Smolinsky, Tom Crosbie and Joe Joyce while Steve Wintermeyer, Bob Vallesio and Steve Smolinsky each turned in defensive gems. These players show great promise and should capably fill the ranks of the departing seniors. A graduate of Bridgewater State, she is a field hockey referee, and will also be the assistant coach for the girls’ basketball team. Co-captains of the team were Barb Brush and Debbie Morretta. Playing well all year were Sue Burns, Barb Brush, Debbie Mor- retta and Lynda Landry. Debbie Morretta was an All-Star. The girls’ team had a lot of hustle and spirit which brought them to a successful season. The girls qualified for the tourna- ment, but were eliminated in the first round against a strong Dennis-Yarmouth team. The starting “9” will all be back next year to give their opponents a fight for the crown. 6 Winning Season . -i i i The Bourne High 1974 Track team acquired a new coach, Mr. Steve French of Pocasset, and plenty of spirit with 57 candidates signing up including 26 girls (another first), but with an un- developed track. Despite the track problem, the BHS team came up with two excellent relay teams which won a number of events in both the two-mile and the 880 relays, a team victory over Case High at Old Rochester, and a record-setting distance runner. Kim Ciolkowski broke the school record for the two-mile run with 10: 09.1 , clipping 20 seconds off the old record, and also broke the school record for the one-mile run with a 4:35.9 the first time he competed in this latter event. Led by the Seniors, the track men compiled many firsts in the running events and also in field events, notably in the shot put and in the pole vault, during the course of the season. With a newly developed first class track in the offing and a strong nucleus of underclassmen returning, the future is promising. John, Bourne’s number one player throughout the season, held the best won-lost record against his opponents. He was a fifth place finisher in the Cape Cod Schoolboy Tourney. Michael represented Bourne High well in the State Schoolboy Tournament after he became one of the top ten percent golfers in Southeastern Massachusetts to qualify. Senior Daniel Twomey completed his years with many important victories. The 1975 Bourne Higli Golf Team will have a fine nucleus of experienced underclassmen returning in hopes of bettering last year’s record. to And in the California hills . . . Back to the days of California in the late 1800 ’s we went, as the seniors presented their play, “Paint Your Wagon”. After months of preparation, the play went off with a bang on opening night. How will we ever forget Julio with his Spanish accent, or Jacob who sold one of his wives, or Cherry and her “dancing girls”. (It even looked like the “Godfather” got a scene in the play!) All in all, comedy though it was, the seniors showed us the true “spirits” of the pioneers who developed our country. The beginning of the last day together . . . It was the beginning of the end. And the end that opened up a new beginning. It may have been a typical day in May for many, but for us it was a day that will be preserved in our minds forever. As we, the Seniors of ’74, marched into the gym, all eyes were upon us. Happy eyes, loving eyes, eyes fdled with pride . . . and many filled with tears. As Jay Farwell, our president welcomed us, we knew that it had finally begun. As the Class History was read, we laughed with tears over the unforgettable events of the past 4 years. Had it really been 4 YEARS since we were finky little fre shmen? And it seems like only yester- day, we thought to ourselves. How did it ever go so fast? As the Class Ode was read by its author, Jim Bronsdon, one line stood out in our minds: Today sifts through thoughtless fingers; seize it, squeeze it, live every second . . . And as each of us vowed they would live up to this motto, our minds began to wonder as to what lay ahead for each of us. After the Shawne Band had played a number, it was then time for the reading of the Class Will. A comedy which had taken months of preparation the seniors soon found that all their efforts had been in vain. The comedy had turned tragedy in the end. As we fantasized through the reading of the Class Prophecy our consciences began to ask us about tomorrow. What would it be like to be out on our own? Would we be able to handle all the responsi- bilities and pressures of adulthood? Did we really know what we wanted for our futures? Soon we were about to find out. And who had stood by us through the trying years of high school? Who had been there to help us to grow within our communi- ty, to help us experience people and happenings, and to help us learn not only about ourselves but about our world? We gave our thanks to Mr. Clifford Wilbur for all his efforts by our gift of a gold pocket watch and Mr. Russell Burns for all his time with the dedication of our yearbook. And as Mr. Cook, our principal gave out the annual awards, we looked with pride on the recipients knowing that they truly deserved to be recognized for all their efforts. During the singing of our Alma Mater we knew that this was the last time we would ever be gathered together as a class, laughing witliin the walls of our one and only high school. And as the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed within the gym we looked about, thinking that it would never look the same, no matter how many times we visited it in the future. We were leaving it forever, but what we left to it would be remembered forever. And as night fell . . . Class Speaker Lance Carpenter As the Commencement march played, the beautiful procession and purple and white robes marched solemnly into the huge gym of the Mass. Maritime Academy. All around us were familiar smiles; parents, relatives, brothers, sis- ters, friends, and teachers. Their faces radiant with the pride they had for us. They had known us for years and yet it only seemed like yesterday. Essays were given by our three class speakers describing our feelings about life and how we were going to deal with tomorrow. The Class Ode was read for the last time and the Class Gift was given to the president of the Class of ’ 75 . Mr. Cook then stepped up to the podium to present scholarships and awards from local groups to the honored recipients. Then as each one of us walked off the stage with our diploma firmly clutched in our hands, we breathed a sigh of relief, thankful, yet sad that it was finally coming to an end. And as we sang our Alma Mater, we knew that the next time we would ever sing it again would be at our reunion. Thus, as the Class Marshals raised their ba- tons for the last time, we stood with pride knowing who we were. We had marched in as a class but we marched out as individuals. Class Speaker Maureen Baron ■f And the last moments . . . 18 We entered it, Full of anticipation Of what to expect from it. Wliat did it expect from us? We laughed, cried, even studied Our way through it. And now that it is behind us. We realize, it was not an it. But a something. Preparing us For the real it.
