We’d snatch a glorious breath of freedom” and wearily trudge on to Christmas. That was great except that we were docked for this time off as the days of the dreaded mid years drew nigh. We floated from one class to another, from football game right through to base- ball and track, and from Homecoming to Prom. The last months of one’s high school days, right up to receiving that beloved diploma, tend to be filled with those good ole remember when” talks. Like all the appropriate” nicknames for everyone, the big Thanksgiving pep rally and the classroom jokes, each day was filled with a new and oftentimes mischievious adventure. Sports are another matter of personal reminiscences. No matter what position, sport or team, any player will tell you that there is nothing so fulfilling, both spiritu- ally and physically as being a “member” of a team. When each season draws its final curtain, the imprint of the days of exhaustion, defeat and victory as well as the blisters and charlie- horses lies heavily in a player’s mind and each does well to preserve all these “good times.” but SATISFACTION brought her back!!!! MEN CURRIOSITY killed the cat? . . . Hey Lord, we’re clean!” We do appreciate the learnings we have received and will remain forever in debt to those who helped us achieve, mature, and learn to live. On this note, we leave Bourne High — happier, smarter and better than that first day we arrived. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand! And Now, Four Years Later . . . REMEMBER how he had those funny nicknames for everybody? how he was so understanding? his kindness to everyone? how he came to our aid in times of need? the fun we had whenever he was around? how he listened to whatever you had to say? our monthly dances? the trip to the Red Sox game? how we cried when we had to leave him? 10 Now in the year 1973 as we look back upon those experiences with fond memories we would like to express our sincere thanks and our deepest appreciation to: MR. The day’s festivities ended as we danced to the music pro- vided by the Arabian Nights. The evening was high- lighted with the crowning of the 1972 Homecoming Queen and her court. Swea Nightingale, escorted by Michael Bars, was crowned Queen. Her stately attendants from the Senior class were Judy Harasiak and Ann Fougere. Representing the class of 74 were pretty Chris Night- ingale and Kyle Tucy. Sweet sophomore maids presented to the court were Phyllis Parady and Jane Enos. Everyone had a great time. This will be an evening we will long remember. The Queen’s lovely attendance and their escorts. Senior Swea is crowned Queen as proud escort Mike Bars looks on. Backfield was surely in motion November 15th as powerhouse SE- NIOR girls romped over the “be- wildered” juniors in icicle weather with an 8-0 score. Under the “watch- ful eyes” of SENIOR coaches Peter Marshall, Bernie Bartee and Shaun Nerolich, the Canalwomen kept the pigskin moving downfield although neither defense nor offense pleased the coaches. (Can’t make temper- mental coaches happy!) Cheerleaders “Karen” Roth, “Michelle” Holt, “Roberta” Reid, “Joanne” Ciampa, “Louisa” Zum- stein, “Rachel” Duffy and Judy Hara- siak kept everyone pepped up even though they froze too! Not only did “Santa Dunn” pay a visit to the Code Club’s annual Christmas Party for St. Mary’s Home this year but this time ole Saint Nick brought along Mrs. Claus and his adorable elves to share their Christmas cheer! The Code Club, backed by the Rotary Club, with the thoughtful donation and patience of the jani- tors and with other various gener- ous contributions helped to provide the children with a plentiful Christ- mas. Concluding Santa’s presentation of the gifts, “Ma” and her “help- ers” served the goodies to the “kids” (big and small alike). It was an exhausted but contented group of children that left the high school that evening but an even more fa- tigued troupe of guys and girls that departed, a little sadly but with a heartful of Christmas spirit. It was hoped that the training would prepare the team for its early season games, but the strategy seemed to backfire as the squad dropped its first two games and was facing a power- ful Fairhaven team for its third contest. This game proved to be the turning point for the season as a fired-up Bourne team managed a 8-8 tie with the heavily favored Fairhaven team. This game was probably the high point in the very successful season. As usual, the Wareham-Bourne game was filled with hard hitting and excitement but the Vikings won the game 42-26 on a frigid Thanksgiving morning. Both teams played well, but Wareham was able to overcome kick-off returns for touchdowns by Mike Roberts and Dan Sweeney. Roberts was voted as the outstanding player in the Wareham-Bourne encounter. After their fine 5-3-1 season, Bourne placed five players on the All-Cape team and three Canalmen were chosen for Division II honors. Seniors Shaun Ncrolich, Bernie Burns, and Jack Burns and Juniors Mike Roberts and Rich Tavares were All-Cape with Shaun, Bernie, and Jack being Division II All-Stars. But no one individual can be singled out as the key to the team. Seniors Steve Bachand and John Ciampa played good ball all year, as did juniors Ed Gendron, Mike Roberts, Rusty Burns, jack Tonello, and Biff Green. Also, Billy McMahon came up from the junior Varsity when Cox and Burns were sidelined with knee injuries. The Canal Cagers started the season by winning their first three games before dropping a close contest against Falmouth. After that, the squad settled down to play good, tough basket- ball and, most importantly, winning the games they had to. Highlights include John Ciampa’s last second basket that won the game against Norton, Henry’s 30 point game versus Coyle- Cassidy and Bobby’s 21 point effort in the Norton game. Tom Cox averaged 1 1 points a game before suffering a knee injury and undergoing an operation with four games left in the season. Cox, Cardoza, and Tonello were awesome off the boards all year and Ciampa played some great games in Cox’s absence, while Bobby Reid displayed some slick ball handling when leading the offense. In the State Tournament game, Bourne was defeated by a fine Cardinal Spellman club, 88-64, but the Canalmen hustled until the final buzzer and played a fine game. Reid had 21 points and Cardoza 18 in their last games as Canalmen. The entire school should be proud of the fine spirit, as well as the basket- ball ability, shown by the entire team. Ill team; Marge to the first string and Debbie to the second. Also playing good all year were Kathy Berry, Chrys Mercier, Ann Fougere, Debby Michelsen and Mary McMahon. The girls’ junior Varsity team equaled the Varsity’s over all record of 7-7 while dropping many close games. The team started out by winning their first four games, before losing to Falmouth 23-22. The girls provided many thrills and Miss Lindberg can look forward to such players as Lynn McMahon, Stacy Fiandy, Doris Goryl and Marcia Cardoza joining the varsity next year. Bottom Row: K. The lone win was a 2-1 conquest of Dennis-Yarmouth. Captains for this year’s team were Seniors jack and Bernie Burns with assistant captains Shaun Nerolich, Peter Marshall and Junior Dan Sweeney. Chris Farrell and Kip Pedersen, both Seniors, played good hockey all year as did Chris Schuck, Charlie McCann and Mark T ay I or. At the end of the season, several players were honored for fine seasons. Charlie McCann received Most Improved Player, Peter Marshall, Sportsmanship Award and Jack Burns was honored for contributions to Bourne Hockey during his four varsity years. Showing promise for the future, JV standouts included John and Frank Hesek, Dale Burtyk, Jim Bronsdon, Jordan Oakley, and Billy Forni. 1973 Captains and Coach Ed McCarthy THE RECORD Bourne 0 Falmouth 8 2 Barnstable 11 0 D-Y 1 2 Falmouth 7 3 Barnstable 13 2 D-Y 1 1 Barnstable 11 4 D-Y 6 1 Falmouth 7 107 Strong Team Expected Of JV’s Next Year!
