We have learned to form our own opinions and at the same time respect the opinions of others. Cooperation was the word best to describe this year in that everyone worked side by side to make it more meaningful for all. Although we have learned to respect the values of others, we feel that self-respect is more important in establish- ing our own identity. The talent of being able to make people laugh is a gift in itself, but it is a greater talent to be able to laugh at oneself. 6 Over the four years we have matured to a greater understanding of people. We are able to look beyond the snythetic facades of a person to the essence of that person ' s being. ■ Above all, our high school years have helped us to develop our character and broaden our horizons to meet the challenges of the future . 9 We dedicate the 1972 Canal Currents to Mrs. Ann M. Sullivan k. . We, the Class of 1972, reverently dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Ann M. Sullivan. Reluctantly, Mrs. Sullivan retired but she is fondly remembered in our hearts for her kindness, devotion and good-will. Mrs. Sullivan began teaching physical education at Bourne High in 1955. During her years at Bourne, Mrs. Sullivan was the advisor of the cheerleading squad for five years, and was the coach of the varsity softball team for several years. Therefore, it is with great respect and deep sincerity, that we the Class of 1972 dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Ann M. Sullivan. faculty ( ' ul-ti), n. any mental or physical power; mental capacity; skill obtained by practice; ability; ease; readiness; the members collectively of any one of the learned professions, especially the medical; the masters and professors of a department in a university 13 L 1 ' Administration Mr. Roland T. In the fall of 1968, we crossed the threshold of Bourne High as “insignificant” freshmen. We made our debut by electing as our fresh- man class officers: President, David Mc- Dermott; Vice-President, Sharon Gandy; Sec- retary, Karen Brown; and Treasurer, Peter Olson. We participated in the annual magazine drive, which provided the initial start in the class treasury. We survived the first year by accepting the traditional degrading, scornful remarks in- flected upon us by the upperclassmen. Refus- ing to let this abuse dampen our spirits, we forged ahead into our sophomore year. We commenced our year as silly sophomores, by electing Nobby Aflague as President; Cheryl Krumrine, Vice-President; Sue Wright, Sec- retary; and Ann Goss, Treasurer. As sopho- mores, we were represented in some of the school’s more prominent activities. Sue Wright and Karen Brown represented our class at the Homecoming Football Game and Dance, which were sponsored by the Code Club. Our junior year was successful under the guidance of officers Sue Wright, President; Karen Brown, Vice-President; Jean Christop- ulos, Secretary; Sandy Fougere, Treasurer; and Mary Lynn Sherlock, Prom Committee Chair- man. Once again we took part in the Home- coming Activities, with Karen Brown and Sue Wright as our representatives to the Home- coming Court. The main event of the year was, of course, the Junior Prom. We were helped along under the leadership of our class advisor, Mrs. Susan Doucette. The prom committee worked dili- gently preparing the decorations to correspond with the theme of the Prom — “Scarborough Fair”. The focal point of the room at the Holi- day Inn was a gazebo for the court, constructed by the boys of the prom committee. The Junior Prom of 1971 proved to be a memorable occasion for all who attended. Sue Wright was crowned queen of the evening. Karen Brown, Mary Beth McGreavy, Beth Walters, Mary Lynn Sherlock and Jean Christopulos, the members of the Prom Court danced to music provided by The Changing Times. Senior Class Officers President: Gwendolyn A. Williams Vice-President: Beth Ann Walters Secretary: Karen M. Brown Treasurer: J. Mark Leary 27 After a seemingly endless three years, the Class of ’72 began its year as the seniors of Bourne High School. Of course the class ex- pected complete respect from the underclass- men, and a few privileges from the administra- tion. However, we soon learned better! The first disappointment came when the senior lunch line disappeared. This blow was almost fatal to the class ego. With the help of the class advisor, Mr. Sturgis, this privilege was once again restored to us. At the Powder Puff football game, the class of ’72 once again showed their ability for suc- cess. The senior girls made remarkable foot- ball players while the boys showed their hidden talents as majorettes and cheerleaders. It was inevitable that the seniors should win. At the annual Homecoming Dance, held on ' •ksgiving night, Beth Walters was crowned “Homecoming Queen”. The other senior members of the court were Sue Wright and Karen Brown. An attempt to make money was the Spaghet- ti Dinner, which was held in January. This was a first at Bourne High and provided funds for graduation and the class party. i 28 f THE 1972 SUP Bourne High School PLEMENT • CANAL CURRENTS Baseball Varsity Despite a dismal 3-10 record, the boys’ Varsity Base- ball team provided many thrills. Under new head coach Andy Laughton, the highlights were the three victories; one against Provincetown and two over Dennis- Yar- mouth. Led in hitting by Sophomore outfielder Dan Sweeney and All-Star second-baseman Tim Bulla, the team showed great promise, but it was not to be, as the club could not get untracked. Pitchers Mike Bars and Marcel Martineau headed the mound staff with other outstanding performances being given by Steve and Ed Gendron, Bobby Reid, John Gould, Mike Roberts and Tom Laughton. Junior Varsity Under head coach Mark Southworth, the Junior Var- sity compiled a fine 8-5 record. Junior Jesse Franco and Sophomore Charlie Cox paced the squad in hitting, while the aces of the pitching staff were Bob Martineau and Bill McMahon. The team’s biggest wins came against Fairhaven, where a Jim Potts home run provided the margin in the 2-0 victory, and arch-rival Falmouth, also, fell before the Junior Canalmen. Three other stellar performers were Joe Wiggins, Joe Joyce, and Stevie Denbaugh. Girls Give All, But It Wasn’t Enough it The girls, softball team, under coach Ms. Linda Maynard, finished their 1972 season with a mediocre 3-5 record. Al- though their record doesn’t show it, the team had many highlights, including two wins over arch-rival Falmouth. The other victory was a 14-8 conquest over the Dartmouth Indianettes. The club was led by senior co-captains Gail and Diane White, with other out- standing performers being Debbie Moretta, Kathy Wells and Chrystal Mercier. 6 The Record SCORES BOURNE 3 vs. BARNSTABLE .7 BOURNE 6 vs. DENNIS-YARMOUTH .7 BOURNE 14 vs. DARTMOUTH .8 BOURNE 3 vs. DARTMOUTH .... .17 BOURNE 12 vs. DENNIS-YARMOUTH .19 BOURNE 17 vs. FALMOUTH .6 BOURNE 4 vs. BARNSTABLE .... .12 BOURNE 18 vs. FALMOUTH .4 “A” Track Although the turnout for the 1972 Track Team was slight, the trackmen who did turnout, produced a fine season with the result being three new school records and three participants in the State Track Meet. The new school records were: Mike Gregory in the 100-yard dash, Scooter Smith in the 220-yard run, and Artelle Peters who set a record in the 880. Mike, Scooter and Artelle also participated in the State Meet with Scooter and Mike losing only in the finals. Coach Jerry Cardoza is very proud of these three, but also is pleased with such other outstanding performers as Roberto Hamler, Tom Cook, Kim Ciolkowski, and Tom Walsh. Golf The 1972 Varsity Golf Team went through their sea- son compiling a 4-6-1 record. With a couple of breaks, the team could have had a much better record, but as it was, the Bourne representatives did very well. The Canalmen dominated Wareham, beating the Vikings twice, both times by wide margins. Also falling before the team were, Dartmouth, by 7-2, and Fairhaven also by the score of 7-2. On the final day of the season, Bourne battled a tough Falmouth squad, with the out- come being a 4 1 2-4 Vi tie. Playing outstanding golf all year were John Manion, Jon Perkins, Steve Bachand, and Ron “Boomer” Lees. 10 ' Ml If l - i f ' J ” tJ f Tw y j TV The Record SCORES Bourne 1 Dennis-Y armouth .8 Bourne V 2 Barnstable . . . . .7‘ 2 Bourne 8 ' 2 Wareham .... . . l 2 Bourne 7 Dartmouth . . . . .2 Bourne 1 Falmouth .8 Bourne 4 Dennis-Y armouth .5 Bourne V 2 Barnstable . . . . .7‘ 2 Bourne 6 ' 2 Wareham .21 2 Bourne 1 Dartmouth . . . . .8 Bourne 7 Fairhaven . . . . .2 Bourne 4 ' 2 Falmouth .4 ' 2 11 k Anthony and Cleopatra Listening attentively to Mrs. Brooks. The singing minstrals Karen and Michael discuss lines. The senior class play, “an Evening With Shakespeare”, unveiled the many talents of the senior class. Beginning with the boys in their leotards, which displayed their shapely legs, and continuing with the many staged and sometimes authentic sword fights, the Senior Class Play proved to all that a Shakespearean play could be successfully presented by a Senior High School. Under the guidance of Mrs. Berna- dette Brooks. British accents, sword fight- ing, and the costumes of the Elizabethan period were all mastered and presented for the enjoyment of the audience. The fin- ished product was reward enough for the many hours of hard work and frustration that went into production of this drama. 12 The Cast The Senior Class Presents “An Evening With Shakespeare” Othello The “Prop Girls Class Day — “The Beginning of the End” Tension, excitement, expectation, sadness — all emotions that characterized the Class Day of 1972. Beginning with the stiff march to Pomp and Circum- stance, class day proved to be one of the more entertain- ing events that was to mark the close of many a high school career. Highlights of the four years at Bourne were recapped in amusing manners by our more indus- trious classmates. It was also on this occasion that the yearbook, a testimony to our senior year, was presented to Mrs. Anne Sullivan, in whose honor the book was dedicated. The day proved to have surprises and shocks for all the graduates involved. We were the first class to grad- uate from the Mass. Maritime Academy Auditorium. Despite the confusion and chaos, we marched in calmly to Pomp and Cir- cumstance. This was the end for us; the end of four years of hard work, good times, and many memories. As we marched out of the auditorium, each one of us was a little sad, eagerly looking forward to the future, but re- membering the past with a special fond- ness. Balloons, flowers and a ferris wheel helped to promote the atmosphere of a fair. The focal point of the room was the gazebo which served as the throne for Queen Susan Wright and her royal court — Beth Walters, Mary Lynn Sherlock, Karen Brown, Mary Beth McGreavy, and Jean Christopulos. One of the highlights of the evening was the court dance, during which the band played “Colour My World”. 62 Code Club sponsors a successful Powder Puff Game; Seniors dominate Juniors The Powder Puff game, held in early November of 1971, turned out to be one of Code Club’s biggest and most success- ful money making projects, which was enjoyed by everyone: seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, faculty and spectators. Bourne’s mighty seniors rallied the jolly juniors and emerged victorious in spite of the fought efforts on the juniors side. The freshmen managed to get the upper hand over the competitive sopho- mores in another well battled game. The powerful seniors never lacked spirit 64 Aren’t you glad that we used Dial? Don’t you wish Sue did? throughout the game because of the enthusiasm projected by cheerleaders Mike Harris, Bruce Fernandes and Glenn Taylor. Half-time proved to be very exciting with the majorettes, David Pereira, Dennis Phillips, Tom Danti and Scott Froman performing a routine to a tune played by a junior of Shawne Band. With refreshments served at the con- cession stand on the home side of Jack- son Memorial Field, and an admission fee, Code Club profited both with pride and financial gain. SENIOR POWER Oh, Mike! Pull your skirt together! “Code Club girls share the Christmas Spirit with the children of St. Mary ' s . 99 The Code Club once again summed up the holiday spirit by giving the annual Christmas party for the children of St. Mary’s in New Bedford. Gwen Williams began the festivities by leading the children in song and games. On request of the Code Club, the boys of the High School entertained the boys of St. Mary’s with games of football and basketball. The girls meanwhile, were involved with the members of the Code Club in various games and activi- ties. The main event of the party was of course Santa Claus, portrayed by Mr. Dunn. After refreshments and dancing to the music provid- ed by the Stage Band, the children prepared reluctantly to leave. The Code Club members, who enjoyed themselves thoroughly, were sorry to see them go. The Christmas party pr oved to be another of the many successful ventures of the Code Club this year. athletics (ath-let ' iks), n. any system of athletic training by gymnastic exer- cises or outdoor sports; athletic exercises collectively. •port (spSrt), n. diversion; jest; mirth; mockery; play; outdoor recreation, as hunting, snooting, etc.; athletics and games of skill for which prizes are given or money staked; an animal or plant which deviates in its organism from the normal condition; [Slang), a gambler; a cheap, flashy person: v.i. to play or frolic; trifle; practice field diversions: v.t. to divert; exhibit or wear in public: adj. suitable for sports; made in a style suitable for wearing at sports, as a sport gown. Three of these games were lost in the last minutes. The hardluck and injuries that plagued the Canalmen in the beginning of the season did not get the Bourne football spirit down. Bourne came back to win four out of their last five games and surprised people in the Capeway Conference with their upset of Dartmouth. Hold on, Sam! One of the most memorable experiences of the season was the overnight stay at Mohawk to play Mohawk Regional High School. This was all made possible by the Bourne Boosters Club who footed the bill for the trip. Not only was the trip fun, but Bourne came away with their first victory of the year, 30-18. Bourne closed off the sea son with a solid 29-14 win over Wareham in the annual Thanksgiving day game. The de- fensive play was the highlight of the hard fought game. Preston “Scotter” Smith was picked most valuable player of the Wareham game. He earned this honor by scoring a touchdown on a pass reception and playing a great game at defensive halfback. Tom Cook scores! Two of Bourne’s starters were honored at the end of the season when they were picked to the annual Capeway Conference All-Star team. Steve Gendron was picked to the offensive and defensive teams at guard and defensive end. Tom Cook who gained an average of 100 yards per game was selected to the backfield of the offen- sive team. The JVs traveled to Dennis- Yarmouth and defeated the Dolphins 20-0. Everything clicked for the Canalmen and they were up for their last game of the season against Dart- mouth. On November 15, the JVs defeated Dartmouth by the same score as the game before: 20-0. The Freshman team had a very poor turnout this year, but of the 11 to 15 young men who came out for the team, none of them gave up. Although they lost all of their games, one could see a steady improvement and a great desire to win. Con- gratulations to these young men who never gave up. fi UPfl i , U 1 1 I ,Si E K I TOUCHDOWN! Highlights of the season were the game at Dartmouth and the match with Falmouth. Bourne upset Falmouth at home October 5, 1-0. Beginning with the Freshman pep rally, the cheerleaders strove to keep spirit and enthusi- asm ever-constant through the many games which were to follow. The majorettes added spark and spirit dur- ing half-time at the football games to the ac- companiment of the Shame Band directed bv Mr. Francis Roy. Some of the best games of the season were the Sandwich game, the Dartmouth game, the Provincetown game, and the Falmouth game. Three of these four games were wins. The frosh five was led by Jeff Woods who averaged about 20 points per game. Also consistent Tom Laughton always chipped in a good number of points. They defeated three Capeway opponents, Dartmouth 21-20, Falmouth 33- 25 and Wareham 28-18. Co-Captains this year were Robin McIntyre and Diane White. The JV’s had a rough season also as they won five games and lost nine. Of the nine games, six of them were lost by less than three points a piece. The Junior Varsity Determination! 87 A Tough Season — For A Team That Never Again as in seasons past, the record of the Canalmen hockey team does not show their great desire to win and their disappointment when they went down to defeat. As most people know and understand the Bourne hockey team will not win a majority of their games until 1) They have their own rink and 2) They get into a league with teams they can compete with. Of the thirteen skaters that made the var- sity this season, five were seniors. All in all it was a young team. Surprisingly, most of these starters were underclassmen so maybe next year with the experience gained they will improve. The seniors of course will be missed. Glenn Taylor, Nobi Aflague, Tom Morrison, Mike Caronand, newcomer Neil Hayes all con- tributed much to this year’s team. Goal Bourne! Congratulations Peter. Team: left to right 1st row, Jim Marzelli, Mike Caron, Neil Hayes, Jack Burns, Dan Sweeney, Chris Schuck, Glenn Taylor. 2nd row, manager Tony Turk, Coach David Allen, Nobi Aflague, David Pereira, Tom Morrison, Peter Marshall, Mark McCullough, Bill Forni. 88 Gave Up. “Get out there and play hockey.” Seniors — Tom Morrison, Mike Caron.
