9 Scboai eiCATION TO CLAYTON E. CAMPBELL In appreciation of his years of devo- tion and service as superintendent of the Bourne schools and of his personal concern for the develop- ment and weKare of the students, we the Class of 1971 dedicate our yearhook to Mr. Campbell. ' Our world is n antly changing, growing, expanding. Ypu cdh s thd chan have taken piace simpiy by reviewing our history We as a people have moved from caves to tents to log Cabins to houses to apartment houses buiit of concrete and steel. Leaders have come and gone on this earth, always leaving their mark. We have had miiitary leaders, leaders in the diplomatic fieid, philosophers, scientists, and ruiers all of whoni have caused us to review our thinking and to formulate new ideas of how to survive as a free world where each individual has his own worth. While the large world around us has been changing our own little world has not remained constant. For the seniors their world up until now has been their high school. This has not remained constant. New faces have replaced old and familiar faces both in the ranks of the students and those of the faculty. Ouf thinking has changed in four years as more and more new ideas have been accepted and are being tested. This book is an attempt to chronicle some of these changes — the events that have taken place over the last year 1970-1971. A planet doesn’t explode of itself,” said drily The Martian astronomer, gazing off into the air — That they were able to do it is proof that highly Intelligent beings must have been living there.” —John Hall Wheelock I do my thing and you do your thing I am not in this worid to live up to your expectations And you are not in this world to live up to mine You are you and I am I and if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful. — Frederick S. They opened against Barnstable with a tie, 12-12, and won their first game the following Monday against Falmouth. On a rain soaked day they tied Fairhaven, 0-0, to make their record 1 win, 0 losses, and 2 ties. They came back the following two Mondays to win their second and third games. They closed their season against Ware- ham hoping to be undefeated. The J.V. ' s tried but could put nothing together as they lost to Wareham 6 to 20. They ended the season with 3 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. Maybe with the help of the members of this team Bourne will again have a winning season. Freshmen Not So Lucky FRESHMEN RECORD BOURNE OPPONENT Barnstable Falmouth Fairhaven D-Y Dartmouth Wareham John Gould and Bernie Burns protecting their ball throwing quarterback. The Freshmen, under Ed McCarthy, had a disappointing 1-4-1 season. Never giving up hope, however, the Freshmen fought gamely with Mike Roberts, Rusty Burns, Danny Sweeney, Jim Burgess and Eddie Gendren playing exception- ally well. After dropping their first two games the team battled Fair- haven to a 0-0 tie and the following Friday completely over- whelmed the Dennis-Yarmouth Freshmen 44-6. Even though their overall record for the season was not good, these Fresh- men showed a lot of determination and a willingness to put in a lot of hard work. Perhaps with a little more experience they could be a good addition to the Bourne team. Tom Cook grabbing a high one. Bourne Hockey 1970-71 — a year and a season that will be remembered in the record book as a losing one. Yes, the record book, the great historian of the athletic competition at Bourne will show the Canalmen defeating only D-Y and battling to a 2-2 tie with the same D-Y team. But that ' s all the record book will show and that ' s a shame. What the record book will fail to outline are the numerous pieces of information, none offered as excuses, but rather as facts, which must be pre- sented if there is to be a fair and honest evaluation of the season as a whole. The record book will not show, for instance, the degree of difficulty of the schedule in the Capeway Conference or the basically young Bourne Team, or the two very close games with the league champion Falmouth, that were won by Falmouth duringthe last periods. Neither will the record book show the fact that Bourne didn ' t play one home game, because there is no rink in Bourne. Yet, despite all this, there were individual honors taken by members of the Bourne team. Senior Brad White, Freshman Chris Shuck, and Freshman Dan Sweeney were all in the top ten in scoring in the Capeway Conference. Picked, from Bourne, for the Capeway All-Stars was Senior Captain Jim Sweeney. Bourne Beats Falmouth . . . The boys varsity basketball team started the season with a lopsided win over Sandwich, 90-68 and went on to win five non-conference games with no losses. The first conference game was against Falmouth, home, and the Canalmen re- sponded to the terrific pressure by winning by one point, 67-66. Steve Gendron won the “Player of the Week” award, from the Standard Times, for his play during the game. After this first Capeway win in almost two years, the Canalmen went on to beat D-Y and Wareham. The team, with a record of nine wins and no losses, went to the Boston Garden to play Barn- stable (9-0) on March 21. Bourne ' s game faltered as the Red Raiders stunned them, 84-44. During the remainder of the season Bourne was unable to get back the momentum they had lost that Friday night. The games were close, yet the Canal- men remained on the low side of the score board. The quickness and potential of the team showed again only once, as they defeated D-Y for the sec- ond time, 69-59. I don ' t care if both shoes come untied! Two points for Dan the Hawk I Oh no! You can’t have it, it’s mine . . Two more big ones. “Scooter” Smith Breaks School ‘Last one is a rotten egg.” TRACK TEAM This years track season turned out to be, in more ways than one, pretty good, even though the team suffered tosses towards the end of the season. Our squad won their first three track meets and this boosted the team morale for a winning season, because as you recall last season, the team lost every meet they ran in. This year the team was larger and this enabled our coach, Mr. Cardoza to place each individual in a particular event that he felt would make us a stronger contender against the other teams. The captains elected to repre- sent the team, Dan Hawkins, Preston Smith, and Artelle Peters, turned out to be good choices giving the team good strong leadership, while always staying in contention. Preston “Scooter” Smith, who started off with sore legs, came back and broke the school’s record of a 220 yd. dash. Preston’s 22.8 beat the old record of 23.0 by 2 tenths of a second. In the Boston state finals at White Stadium, he broke it for a second time with a 22.2. The season officially ended after the Boston state finals. Five members of the team participated in this event. Artelle Peters, Dan Hawkins, Russ Jones, Scooter, and Paul Palo. ‘Dm . . . that blond was nice. I get that bird, this time. Record in 220 dash No-luck Team Shows Future Promise Uh-Oh “What happened; VARSITY BASEBALL This year ' s Varsity baseball team, like all the rest of Bourne’s athletic teams, was picked by the local newspapers to finish near the cellar with an atrocious record. They beat Chatham 5 to 4 and then dropped games to both Ware- ham and Barnstable. Their record, 1-2, proved everyone’s idea that Bourne was a cellar club. They split the next two games, still being unimpressive. At this point, the club began playing ball and rattled off wins over Fairhaven, D-Y, Ware- ham, Dartmouth and Barnstable. The “cellar” club was battling at the top of the pack. The team be- gan losing, dropping the last 5 games, making their final record 6 - 8 . True, a lot can be improved upon, but the Canalmen showed the league and the fans that they will be heard from in the coming years. J.V. Baseball “Now where did they put that four-leaf clover? This year’s J.V. team did not post an impressive record, though they did make it clear that they will be ready to fill the ranks of the graduating seniors, and help im- prove the future baseball teams of Bourne. The team was very impressive in their first victory beating Chatham 11 to 2. They lost to Barnstable then beat Fal- mouth 7 to 6 in a hard fought contest. They could not sustain another victory until they beat Wareham 5 to 4. They came right back and beat Tabor Academy 6 to 2, before ending the season with a loss to Dartmouth. Girl’s Varsity Basketball It was a team that almost made it, a team that almost upset the undefeated team, and it was a team that almost captured the Capeway Conference Champion- ship for the third straight year. But. there was something miss- ing, something that just wasn’t there, something very slight that separated this team from the laurels of the past years. Never- theless, it was a good season that seemed mediocre, only perhaps because it wasn’t a great season. It’s so easy to take a winner for granted, to forget how good it was. until . . . It was a season that left Bourne in a second place tie in the Cape- way Conference, a season that left an overall record of thirteen wins and six losses, and it was a season that, for some, just left. It was the type of season that most coaches would call a build- ing year, except this team lost five starting Seniors (Judy Cox, Now girls. I ' ll see to it that you Sharon Long, Deb McCulloch, Patty O’Reilly, Joanne McKenzie). It was a coach that practiced with the team, laughed with the team, cried with the team, but always rooted for the team. It was a coach some will dislike, some will love, but none will for- get; Mr. Costa! It was a season made up of in- dividual games each seeming to be the beginning or the end of the universe until that game was over, and another of greater im- portance took its place. Through- out the long winter schedule the aging season, unaware of the great crescendos of desire and pressure within, coolly unfolded its secret destinies. It was a year, as are all years, born of triumphs and defeats, lived on singing and sometimes solemn bus rides, buried in friendships and remem- bered in unquenched aspirations and thoughts of “next year’’! all have dates after the game. 2 points for Judy. It was the kind of season after which one would sit back and say, ‘‘So that’s what it’s like to play high school basket- ball”. It was a season of some ludicrous blunders, some easy wins, and some dis- heartening almost-wins. For the JV’s it was a year of big mistakes, long practices, and constant learning. Sue Jarvis, Secretary; Sandy Wiesner, Vice-President; Dan Sweeney, President; Mary Jane Anderson, Treasurer. Going to High school for the first time was a lot easier than we thought it would be. People told us that we would get lost the first time we walked in. Well, to tell the truth we did get confused going to our first classes, but after that it was quite easy to find our way. The classes were easy but it depended on the teachers and the amount of time we put into each class. Being a freshman offered a lot of ex- periences, such as pep rallies and assemblies. Note: The Freshmen Class made themselves heard at our Pep rallies — but they had the most numbers. Freshmen experience learning from others. Freshman Representatives Carole Bradford. Soph- omore Class Advisor, As sophomores we climbed one more step up but we were still considered Underclassmen. As sophomores we voted for our class officer and student council representatives as well as girls for the Homecoming queen ' s court. We were proud to have fellow classmates on the varsity teams of football, basketball, baseball and hockey. This year it was decided to have a new design for the ' 73 class rings, which we ordered this fall. Also for the first time the Sophomore Class was able to go to Class Day. Our sophomore year proved interesting and fulfilling and as the doors open to next year we will at last be con- sidered upperclassmen! ROOM 14A. First Row: Sheri Woodall, Vicki Alhouse. The talented chorus girls provided background singing and a Can-Can that will never be forgotten.
