The Bourne High Field Hockey team set out to improve their game. And that they did! Captained by Jan Thompson and Deb Oakley, the girls broke even with 4 wins and 4 losses — the most successful season since this sport was re-established at Bourne in 1967. A good year with hopes of more to come. Head Coach Russ Burns, along with assistants Dan Hostetter, Rene Mons, Frank Kochnowicz and Ben Hatch were faced with a rebuilding year after last year ' s undefeated season. The team was built around Seniors Robert Cardoza, John Edwards, Arlandos Lee, Stan Thompson, Steve Fougere, Joe Sweeney, Craig MacKay and Richard Mohre. However, the experience gained by such underclassmen as John Gould, Bruce Gendron, John Cook, Keith Woody, Mike and Ed Gregory, Dan Hawkins, Ellix Powers, Rick Consoni, Paul Palo and Scooter Smith along with Freshmen such as Butchie Bruce, Jackie Burns, Bernie Burns and Chuck Brite should restore Bourne to the status it has enjoyed since Coach Burns has been at Bourne. The season opened with Bourne dropping a heart- breaking 9-6 decision to eventual Class C co-champ Coyle in the final minute. This inspiring performance was followed by an impressive 30-7 victory over Barnstable in which Powers, Edwards, Sweeney, Lee and the whole line were immense. A powerful Falmouth eleven shattered Bourne ' s hopes for two in a row as they crushed the Canalmen 50-23. This loss seemed to drain the Canalmen of their inspiration and in successive weeks were beaten by a strong Ipswich team 30-7, struggled to tie Durfee of Fall River 6-6 and lost to Fairhaven 41-20. Faced with the prospects of a losing season, the seniors attempted to rally the team for its last three games. Thompson, Powers and Sweeney scored as the Canal nnen downed D-Y 18-8. John Edwards, Bob Cardoza and Steve Fougere all played well. The next week. Bourne played perhaps its finest game against heavily favored Dartmouth. Bourne controlled the ball and led at halftime 16-0. The Canalmen desperately attempted to hang on, but the final score was 25-24. The Thanksgiving Day game proved the end to a disappointing season. Missing several key players, and hurt by countless turnovers. Bourne fell to an out- played Wareham eleven 7-0. Bourne ' s Junior Varsity enjoyed a fine season. Rick Consoni, Paul Palo, Tom Cook and Tom Morrison will prove valuable additions to next years varsity. The Freshman team also had a fine season, losing only to Falmouth and tying league champion Barn- stable. Quarterback Jack Burns, backs Butch Bruce, Tom Muse, Stan Howard and Dick Butler and linemen Bernie Burns, the Llanes brothers and Chuck Brite were the mainstays of the successful team. Junior Varsity (No names) With the field hockey sticks in storage and bruises fully doctored, the Bourne High girls moved into the basketball season guided by second year coach Vernon Costa. The team met its toughest oppo- nent— D.Y. in a championship game in which Bourne emerged the victor to take the Cape and Vineyard League title. The girls lost the Principle ' s tourney by only one point (41-40) in overtime to Sandwich. Rover Deb McCullough helped to carry the team with superb ball handling while Jo McKenzie set up most of the point scoring plays. Sophomore rookie Pat DeLoach added much strength to the team with her height and determi- nation. The backbone of any team is its defense and this team proved no different as guards Judy Cox and Sharon Long continuously fed the offense for points. This should not prove a problem for the Bourne girls who work indefatigably and have practiced form and a few plays with the five man set up. Anyway, its i not the quantity, but the quality of the girls on the court ■ that makes a winning team and the quality of our girls indicates that they will be winners for a long time to come. The Bourne High golf team, under new coach Rene Mons, had a disappointing 3-9 record. The team lost some early matches, and never regained its confidence until late in the year when they won two in a row and narrowly missed knocking off the two top teams, Dartmouth and Barnstable. The team consisted of seniors Scott Anderson, Joe Sweeney, Craig MacKay and Henry Spencer, as well as Mike Zifcak, John Mannion, Marty Fahey, Steve Zavrid, Jim Sweeney, Scott Hayes, Steve Bachand, and Henry Smart. The team was missing some key player for nearly every match, and were never at full strength except for their two winning matches and the narrow loss to Dartmouth. Craig MacKay was the team ' s leading putter, while John Mannion and Scott Anderson were high in all other departments. A great deal of thanks is due the Pocasset Golf Club for their generous offer of the facilities of their course for the team ' s use. Coach Rene Mons gives a few helpful pointers to Joe Sweeney and Craig McKay. The Word Enjoy Was Born Here Craig McKay. A man and his gloves. This is going to be some shot. There was much new blood injected into the girls softball team this year and unfortunately, new blood takes a while to get :irculated. While it did not have a winning season, the team was close in every game and always gave a good account of itself. The record was 8-10 overall, but only 3-9 in the league. A few clutch hits in certain games would have made a great deal of difference in the record. The team was bolstered by seniors Peter Tilton, Tom Cahir, Dave Llanes, Tom Branes, Fred Lindstrom, and Don Jones. The early loss of Steve Ouellette was damaging. The burden of the pitching chores fell to sophomore Steve Gendron who had a fine season, winning 5 and losing 3, and junior Bruce Murphy who gained valuable experience for next year. Individual leaders of the team were Steve Ouellette who hit .361 and had 2 homeruns, Fred Lindstrom, and Bart Perry, each of whom had 14 hits. Steve Gendron closed the season with 42 strikeouts. Next year ' s team will be missing the services of this year ' s captain, Tom Cahir and also Pete Tilton, Peanuts Ouellette, Dave Llanes, Don Jones, Tom Barnes, and Fred Lindstrom. However Coach Sharp can look forward to Steve Gendron, Bruce Murphy, and second-baseman Tim Bulla, third- baseman Bart Perry, and outfielders Ron and Bruce Gendron. The JVs had an 8-7 season and were led by pitcher Chuck Quintal, Ron and Bruce Gendron, and Jerry McCone. Included in their season was a fantastic 32-26 win over Harwich.
