In no other area is this parable of the talents more true. Read daily, not only the sports page, but the editorials and spe- cial articles. Read good books. Learn how to recognize propagan- da. Pray for wisdom. Keep in tune with God’s purpose. Learn to listen. Observe what others have done, and in all your learning, get understanding. JAMES F. PUBLES % Through these trying times, in which the greatest ingenuities and exertions of mankind are being tested for our very existence it is hopeful that the pillar of education in its various facets will so influence the thinking world, that the noblest of qualities and attributes will prevail, shaping a world of progress, peace, and hope, hitherto unknown. We, each of us, in our own way, how ever small, should strive to contribute to this world at every op portunity, for by so doing, we ourselves become abundantly en riched. There is no substitute for morals and knowledge, upon which is based the philosophy of successful living WALTER STAHURA Office 0 iris MRS. JUDY HENDY School Secretary This year the office is practically another class room. The girls are sent on errands, type letters, take dictation, and keep the office and teachers ' room tidy for guests and the administration. These girls gain excellent experience in many of the phases of secretarial work; into which many go after graduation. The Junior and Senior girls get special help in taking shorthand and typing from Mrs. Hendy. We feel that this is invaluable train- ing for all of them. The office girls are very fortunate to have this opportunity and we are sure that they will profit from it greatly. L 1 - — 1 J J 1 1 j 1 1 1 l ) Left to right: F. Jackson, E. Wright, J. ACTIVITIES I i The Bourne High Student Council of 1954 consists of Mr. John Margarones, Advisor; Whitman Perham, President; Cynthia Courtney, Secretary-Treasurer; James Atherton, Frederic Mitchell, Robert Weston, Faith Jackson, David Crosby, and Kevin Fielding. Our Student Council delegates attended a meeting at Plymouth of the Southeast- ern branch of Student Councils of Massachusetts. The first activity of the Council this year was to put on a square dance. It was enjoyed by all whom attended. At present we are working on a book to give the new members of the school; informing them of the rooms, teachers, courses, etc. The Student Council is open for constructive criticism from any member of the student body. We, in turn, will cooperate to the best of our ability to keep the School proud of its representatives. 18 Orchestra The Shawme Orchestra consists of the musically talented students of the Bourne and Sandwich schools. Under the direction of Mr. Carlton Thorne, the music su- pervisor, the orchestra rehearses Monday evenings throughout the school year. Tra- ditionally scheduled appearances of the orchestra are at the Bourne and Sandwich senior class plays, Bourne Class Night, and at the graduations of both schools. In the last few years much progress has been made in the formation of the Shawme School Band. It provides music for Pep rallies and made its first public ap- pearance in uniform at the Bourne-Wareham football game. Within a few years we hope to have a marching band playing at all of the football games. The new school year brought several surprises to the hallowed halls of Bourne High — chief among these was the vast and sudden increase in attendance at Mixed Chorus and Girls’ Chorus. Each Thursday morning we made our way to those gay and hectic gather- ings of interested students. After three or four weeks of melodious bedlam, some sem- blance of order was brought to the various choruses. We were pleased to find that Mr. Thorne, our new instructor, was possessed with a pleasing appearance and an engaging personality. In all three choruses our vocal arts developed remarkably well under expert conducting of an interesting and varied program of music. The Boys ’Chorus made its debut at a Pep Rally in the fall and was a huge success. The annual Christmas party was graced by the appearance of the Girls’ Chorus. The Tide Club extended an invitation for the girls to present a program of Christmas music. We gladly complied and had a won- derful time. In the comparatively short period we have for Mixed Chorus a surprising amount is accomplished. Mr. Thorne is doing a fine job. It has been said by one with whom we are closely connected, You are the best part-singing group in the school, and I never have any trouble with you.” Even though this statement may have been made in a rash moment, the fact still remains that this is an above-average group of singers. This Spring the Cape will be treated to the talents of a large group of high school pupils who will participate in the band, orchestra, and chorus sections of the Music Fes- tival. Certain select sopranos, altos, and basses will form the various choruses and Bourne High will be represented. If this All-Cape Chorus is like that of 1953, those attending may expect to have a wonderful and rewarding time. When the Mixed Chorus makes its final appearance of 1954 at the Graduation exercises, all those who participate, as well as those who listen, will wholeheartedly agree that those hours of practice were definitely worth while; and the greater joy will come to those who have participated. Bob Roth, Evelyn Lau and Joan Wallace entertained the many guests at this time. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Queen. The members of the class formed an arch down the center of the dance floor and Polly Norris took the hon- ors, escorted into the hall by Jack Ladetto. She was presented the crown of red roses by our class president, Dom Bernabei. The class of 1954 would like to express their appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Mathews for all they have done for us. Thanks to you both from the bottom of our hearts. We also extend our thanks to Mr. Stahura and all who helped in any way to make our prom a success and what we think was the best prom ever to be held at Bourne High. JUNIOR PROM OF 1953 In February of 1953, the junior class got down to brass tacks and decided the title of their prom which would be held on May 22, 1953. Prom Night at the Club Tropica- bana” was chosen over Springtime in the Rockies.” The scenery was created from a South Sea Island theme and was a beautiful sight. Part of the colorful decorations were palm trees, tropical flowers, and orchid streamers. 1953 Dances 4t th e b l ld Ae ' ■gin. At first we were bewildered by all the new faces. Then too, the teachers were new to us. However, it wasn’t long before we became accustomed to the daily routine. | su At our first class meeting the following students were chosen as of- ficers: Richard Smith, President; Louis Pappi, Vice President; and Polly L Norris as Secretary -Treasurer. At the same meeting we planned what we were going to do in the coming year. But before we knew it June came around and with it came the end of our Freshman year at dear old Bourne High. With renewed vigor we returned to school in the fall of 1951. This year, under the leadership of Mr. Gray and Mrs. Kiniry, we again elected our class officers. Those chosen to lead the class were: President, Richard Smith; Vice President, Janet Manchester; Secretary, Dominic Bernabei, and Treasurer, Polly Norris. Having selected our leaders for the coming year, we at once began to plan for our coming activities. A committee was selected in order to prepare for the Sophomore Hal- loween Party, which turned out to be a wonderful night for all. Seniors The next term we picked out our class rings. At the beginning of our Junior year Dominic Bernabei was elected President; Bob Smith, Vice President; Barbara Morse, Secretary; and Polly Norris, Treasurer. The big event in our lives this year was the Junior Prom. This was a great success and a most enjoyable evening. In our Senior year two changes were made in the class officers. Jack Ladetto, took the chair of Vice President and Judy Sorenti, the position of Secretary. This year we have the two greatest pleasures for ourselves and the people of the town — our class trip and the Senior play , January Thaw.” Now the time is drawing near when we, the class of 1954, will be leaving Bourne High School. Some will be joining the services or getting jobs, while others will be going on to school. Wherever we go we will always look back upon the high school years of our lives. To each of the teachers, underclassmen and all the others who have helped us during our four years, we, the class of 1954, say, thanks.” May your lives be enriched as ours were by our most memorable years at dear old Bourne High. Once upon a time there was a man named Rip Van Winkle, who slept for fifty years under an elm tree on a hilltop. One day in December he was awakened by a loud chorus of Santa Baby” and Crazy Man Crazy.” Dazed, he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, scratched his head, stretched, and yawned. When he looked about, he saw a red brick building and exclaimed, Pray tell, what’s this? Why, it’s a school.” Rip scrambled up the long walk and peered through a window. Then he shuffled around the building to the front door, crept in, and climbed a long flight of stairs to the second floor. As the chorus grew louder and louder, Rip clutched his musket more desperately. Quickly he hobbled through the corridor to Room 35. There he saw IT ... a crowd of fun-loving boys: Ben Tobey, Bill Savage, Edgar Elderidge, Sterling Pina, and Pete Mondello. Still startled by their foolish appearance, he cocked his gun into shooting position and blurted out, Stick them up, and give them thar names.” 1 Thinking that Rip was tiny” Dick Butler, the boys shouted, Oh, cut it out, Dick. You know who we are. We’re all on the same football team.” Then immediately the fellows rushed upon Rip and began tugging at his long white beard. Leaving part of his treasured beard behind, he raced through the long dark corridor. S-c-r-e-e-c-h-! He tried to stop, but it was too late. He crashed right into a grey-haired man with a brown leather briefcase. The gentleman mumbled, Excuse me,” then hurried away. After stumbling into Room 31, Rip searched for some place to hide. He quickly hopped into a closet, shut the door, and frantically climbed upon a shelf. There was a dead silence for two minutes; but suddenly out of nowhere the old man heard the sound of a thundering herd of cattle. Hey, let’s look in the closet!” Someone flung the door open. Rip stared down into the excited group of teenagers. Can you reach him?” asked one. No. Let’s let Ben Tobey and Sterling Pina get him. They ought to be tall enough . . . since they are on the first team in basketball. Better get Smokey Stover . . . he’s on the first team, too! !” In a few minutes the old man was dragged down from his post into a chattering mob. He noticed three new faces . . . Pat Waterman, Rhoda Tobey and Helen Wallace, all dressed in short purple skirts and heavy white sweaters with a purple B on the front. Immediately Rip blushed; for in his time, the women wore long dresses and considered it indecent if the dresses were above their ankles! {juniors Hey, fellows, get a load of that real gone beard,” hollered Bob Weston, a member of the Student Council. Let’s pull it off!” Before action was taken, in marched Dick Butler, who shouted, What goes?” Everyone stared at Dick then at poor Rip Van Winkle. Gee!” someone murmured, if that’s Dick, who is this character?” Before he could reply, a young teenager, Fred, Mitchell, also a congress- man on the Student Council, asked, parlez-vous francais?” (Do you speak French. ' ). Rip shook his head. Later Fred introduced him to Roger Kennedy, President of the Junior Class; Donald Lince, Secretary; Warren Freeman, Vice President; and Pauline Mondello, Treasurer. Say,” drawled Lince, he could be Mr. Nicholas in our play, It Might Be St. Nick. He sure looks like Santa with that beard. I’ll ...” The bell suddenly buzzed. Immediately the crowd vanished . . . running in one direction ... to the lunchroom. Soon Rip Winkle, caught in the surging traffic, was shoved, pushed, and literally carried down stairs by a mob of girls: Diane Boesse, Mary Mendes, Helen Wallace, Priscilla Alden, and Rhoda Tobey . . . all members of the Girls’ Basketball Team. Finally in desperation he sought safety at an empty table. In weariness or perhaps disgust he sank down in his easy” chair. After looking about him, he sighed, What a crazy mixed up world this is. Humph! Just listen to that crazy talk . . . ' go, go, go, every- body’ and ' s-l-i-d-e’ and even ' dig your way to the Senior Class! Gad, those Juniorites are so odd, but so happy, I’d hate to see this class rule the world; yet it might not be so bad after all. Perhaps this silly bunch of kids could bring happiness to the world.” Rip Van Winkle, wearing a bright smile, hobbled out of the red brick building down the long walk to his elm tree to sleep for another fifty years. «• Three cheers! We’re Sophomores at last, and well on the way to finding a place among the honored few of Bourne High. The school year started off very smoothly, and there were a few weeks of temporary bliss for our teachers. We soon adjusted ourselves with our new homeroom teachers, Mrs. Kiniry and Mr. Gray. Being the rulers of the first floor,” our first project was to razz the already harrassed but still eager Freshmen. F ou iepi larf The election of officers was the first big undertaking of the class. Those elected were: President, Ben Quimby; Vice President, John White; Treasurer, Jim Jenkins, Secretary Clayton Moore. The females definitely lost out on the campaign, but behind the scenes they pull all the strings. pas: era; Next came the annual fiasco, which is commonly referred to as the Halloween Party. It was a surprisingly well-attended affair, and turned out to be a tremendous success, socially as well as financially. 1 vac inc When the big sports event of the year, the Thanksgiving game, rolled around, both the Grayhounds and the Sophomore class were sadly in Sophomores need of funds. Therefore these two organizations pooled their efforts and sold programs for the game. The profits were divided with each group netting a tidy sum. Next on the agenda of main events was the election of Student Council representatives. Faith Jackson and Cynthia Courtney were the winners by a large majority. The Sophomore Class is also lucky in having several boys and girls on the various athletic teams throughout the school. Most all of us are waiting in anticipation for the selection of a class ring which takes place near the close of the school year, and as the months pass by, all look forward to the picnic at which everyone releases his crazy pent-up actions and has lots of fun. Last of all, before leaving the old brick building before the summer vacation, each Sophomore looks back on the good times and comical incidents that happened to him during the fun-packed year, keeping in mind that in the on-coming year he will be treated in a different way — as an upperclassman. It was soon made clear by our class advisor, Mr. Margarones. After three or four days of wandering about and getting lost in the wrong classrooms we finally became used to the idea that we were high school students. It took us a little longer, Tow ever, to master of the fine art of opening and closing locker doors, but of course when we finally accomplished this magnificent feat we were really proud of ourselves. It wasn’t long before we had our first class meeting. At this time we found that we had a great need for class officers. We elected Leonard Moore, President; Rogert Cushing, Vice President; Lois Philbrick, Secretary; and Sandra Neal, Treasurer. The Freshmen immediately took a great interest in school activ- ities. We have had some wonderful times at the school dances, par ticularly the Halloween Party given by the Sophomores. A Jreshmen Every Freshman is interested in the Athletic Program. At all the games you will see come of the Freshman girls and boys cheering with all their might. We had two members of our class who were substitutes on the football team. They were Robert Cushing and Harold Wordell. Quite a few of our Freshman boys and girls went out for Basketball. We also have some mad musicians” in our class. These people play in the Shawme Orchestra. They are Carol Dainty, who plays the Clarinet, Nan cy Wheeler, piano, and Dave DellaPenta, trumpet. Many of the people in our class sing in either the boys’ or girls’ chorus. The Freshman class also has a good representation in the Art Club. Two of us took an interest in writing and are on the yearbook staff. We are Carol Dainty and Karen Robertson. The Freshman class of Bourne High believes that the best is yet to come and we are looking forward to three more happy years. - - - - hJ H-l c c T t£) d -o c c -S 3 o CL L S 15 Pu uT L d K-i cl C c c g: o ' o d H o U-4 o to to t-4 L 4j L H3 CL c HD c o C uT 1-4 u L — ■ QJ CQ jg l n u« L O H uT u l2 Oh O o £ s ' cl CQ u c o to ' s d d N O -{H 1-4 d X n HD u _Q o Oh c4 a, QJ 2 d u Pi Pi C D CL X J U v 6C C c d G C d a. 60 u, 12 6 u Ch O D to 3 15 £ a, o u U lT pd CJQ a. I Promptly, or usually so, at 2:30 to 4:30 on Wednesday afternoons during the months of September and October, the Buzzards Bay Bowling Center opened its door to a gay group of Bourne High gals.” These gals,” ranging from twenty-five to thirty in num- ber each week, provided their own transportation to and from the alleys, and proved to be very capable of setting up each other’s pins while they bowled in groups of three to six. The girls also proved to be capable of gaining high scores sometimes ranging as far as 96, but under the guidance of Coach Elaine Gifford everyone managed to get an aver- age of 70 or better. All in all, the girls had a great time. They were really interested in this sport and showed tremendous co-operation. OUR BOURNE CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders In May 1953, there was great excitement to be had in Bourne High. The cheer- leaders -were to be chosen by the student body and faculty for next year’s cheering squad. An assembly was held, and the following girls were chosen: Joan Wallace, Captain; Judy Sorenti, Polly Norris, Helen Wallace, Rhoda Tobey, Ruth Tucy, and Pat Waterman. Ellen Savage was chosen as alternate. When September rolled around, these girls were all pepped up to start cheering right away, and cheering practice was held at least four afternoons each week. From the first game until the last these girls helped to cheer our boys on to many victories. However it didn’t matter whether the boys won or lost, the girls were always on the field cheering just as hard as they could. During the football season Pep Rallies were held every Friday afternoon. These Rallies were planned by the cheerleaders, and it is said that they helped a great deal in boosting the morale of the boys. Then basketball season rolled around, and the cheerleaders were once again in action. Let’s not forget -to mention that we also had another alternate, and since for a few games Ellen was not able to come, Yvonne Mitchell took over. Yvonne was a very spirited and peppy cheerer, and we enjoyed having her with us. May I add, that we as cheerleaders wish to thank everyone who has helped to make our pep rallies and cheering season a success. And, as the season draws to a close, we are all looking forward to next year, when we know that with the cheer- leaders and the student body behind us, our fighting teams will be successful. oO’ sc Bou J ° e BovJ loe ■g,o - itoe •g,ou e ftou toe o ' i fne tucV i ... ..-■--- Ya-t Vo ja •pt° vv f . On that heart warming day of reunion, school books were not the only things passed out. Coach Comings had a few gifts for the group of larger and ambitious men. These were shoulder pads, hip pads, helmets, football jerseys, and football shoes. Then, twenty four days later, co-captains Dom Bernabei and Ralph Forni led us in our opening game against Nantucket. Although the record doesn ' t show us in the winning column many times, Bourne High is proud of its boys for showing good sportsmanship and doing their best. PETE MONDELLO BEN QUIMBY BILL SAVAGE COACH LAUGHTON BOYS’ BASKETBALL About twenty-five hopeful candidates reported to Coach Andy Laughton as the 53-54 season opened. Returning from last year’s varsity were John Robbins and Ben Tobey. The Canalmen opened their season with the Mari- time Junior Varsity team in an exhibition game. John Robbins with 22 points led his mates to a 47-33 victory. At this time Johnny Robbins and Dom Bernabei were chosen as co-captains. In the first regularly scheduled game of the season Ben Tobey scored 17 points as Bourne defeated Harwich 63-33- Robbins and Tobey were instrumental in the 55-47 victory scored against the alumni. In a game played at Wellfleet an over-confident Bourne team was defeated by a never-say-die Wellfleet 54-48. This game was later awarded to Bourne because of an ineligible player. Returning from the Christmas vacation, Bourne traveled to Wareham and was defeated by an experienced combine 70-39. In their next game played at Barnstable, the Bourne team fought desperately in the last minute of play to overtake a five point Barnstable lead. The game ended in a 59-59 tie. In the three minute overtime Barnstable scored and won 67-65. Ben Tobey got Bourne in the winning column at the expense of Falmouth as his twelve points were tops in a 44-39 win. Bourne next edged Sandwich 62-61. Johnny Robbins led the scoring with 28 points. Provincetown, after trailing most of the game came through on top by a 53-45 score. Yarmouth, No. I on the Cape, dealt the Bourne five a 57-28 loss. We again went to Wareham only to lose in the last two minutes 64-59. Our next game was at Harwich, where we won 76-63. Four of the next five game were disastrous for Bourne: Sandwich 63-56; Yarmouth 55-39; Fal- mouth 72-62; Barnstable 77-49. Tisbury was our only win 62-42. Bourne ended in fifth place and played Provincetown in the Tourney. We were de- feated 59-43. ! 1 FIRST TEAM Front row: R. MacNamara, J. Hickey, J. Robbins, D. Bernabei, B. Tobey, B. Quimby. With much spirit and exuberance the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team of 1953 and 1954 was quickly organized under the supervision of Miss Elaine Gifford, a newcomer to the halls of Bourne High. After Clara White was chosen by her teammates as captain, the girls were off on a rampage to win the first four games of the season: Harwich, Alumnae, Barnstable, and Fal- mouth. Although the team lost four season games, two to Sandwich, one to Barnstable and one to Wareham, the season’s record was good. Although the Juniors and Seniors took most of the active part in the playing of the games, there were a number of Freshmen and Sophomores who did surprisingly enough to make the first team. Anxious to attain the much coveted Cape Cod Championship which was won last season, the team finally entered the Tournament. The girls’ first opponent was Harwich. They had defeated Harwich twice during the season and this game was also an easy victory with a final score of 48-27. The second game with Provincetown was much harder, but the girls finally were victorious after a hard struggle, 71-60. The final tournament game was played against Sandwich to whom we lost both times during the season. The Bourne girls led by Clara White, kept ahead during the first half, but during the last half Sandwich slowly boosted their score. At the final buzzer the score was 41-46 and the Cape Cod Championship was lost to Sandwich. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Front row: J. Kennedy, J. Koskela, H. Wallace, J. Sorenti, C. White, N. Kel- ley, M. Loud voices raise, in songs of praise, For our dear old Bourne High. Remember all the friendships made, And memories that ne ' re will fade. Through your ideals, we ' ll reach our goal; Bourne High, dear Bourne High. And when from your loved doors we go, We ' ll go with pride because we know Within your walls, the lessons gained, Will help us all our goals attain. When we return in later years, From far and wide we ' ll gather here And sing your praise for all to hear; Bourne High, dear Bourne High. — HELEN MURRAY ' 43 inilWMIllIMKIIIWimiii — MIIP ' IIII nmum
