SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS THE DIOCESE OF TUCSON, ARIZONA This second edition of THE ANCHOR is respectfully dedicated to our Diocesan Superintendent of Schools, Father William B. McCartin, All of us at Bourgade know from personal experience the zealand generosity that animate him in his indefatigable efforts to better Catholic education in our diocese and his constant willingness to assist the various schools in all their endeavors. This dedication is our way of saying our sincere thanks to Father for all he has done for Bourgade. There Was a an Sent rom God Whose Name Was John liars ' No record of 1962-1963 would be complete without a mention of the great and saintly Pope .Tohn XXIII, Certainly historians will write that our world was greatly improved by the example and deeds of this great leader of the Church who won the hearts not only of those of His own Faith but of all men of good will in the short years of his pontificate. The great ecumenical movement whose beneficial effects we are presently feeling and will continue to feel for years to come had its origin in the love of this great .T ohn. Bourgadeans learned to love Him as their Father and Leader in the movement to try to win souls for Christ. Things came to a sudden standstill at Bourgade when the news of the assassination of President Kennedy was announced over our PA system. Shock and griefoverwhelmed all. Prayers were immediately said forthe repose ofhis soul. School closed in his honor, A Solemn Requiem Mass was sung at St. Louis King Church for the repose of his soul, All the students attended. Father Hillmann, S.M., Principal, delivered the eulogy at this Mass and pointed out that the late President had set a very high standard for all Americans, one which students at Bourgade could very well carry into their life here at school and later on inwhatever field ofendeavor they might enter . . . the idea of forgetfulness of self for the common good . . . the charity of Christ which should animate us all! Simon and Jude parish, listen attentively. Father Paul Smith later was celebrant of Benediction to close the ceremonies for the evening. Our first May at Bourgade brought with it our first Mary Procession and crowning. Bourgade students have a special devotion to Mary, Queen of May. Here we see the procession forming at the administra- tion office. .. all students and faculty members walked in procession reciting the Rosary and singing hymns to Our Lady. Parents and friends joined the prayers and hymns. All in all, our first May was truly Marian. 0 73 The Girls' Sodality President, Norma Terborg, and her court of honor walk in the procession. Ladies ofthe court include Rita Ruminski, Georgiana Duf- fy, Virginia Austin, Barbara Weidler and Martha Flores. Greg Kalkbrenner is seen in the background. Norma Terborg places the crown on the statue of Our Lady. Mike Vasquez and Greg Kalk- brenner assist. Our outside altar was prepared by the Ladies of Loretto and the girls of Bourgade. The boys did a lot of chair-carry- ing for this first annual May Crowning. September 8th, Our Lady's Birthday, was the occasion of the Perpetual Profession of Brother Peter, S.M. Pictured at St. Gregory's Convent Chapel where the ceremony was held are Father Hillmann, S.M., Father Emmerth, S.M. and Brother Peter, S.M. Father Blee, S.M. who also assisted at the profession is not shown. Since our chapel is not big enough to hold the entire Student Body we held our Advent Wreath Ceremony in the chemistry shell. Father Emmerth, S.M. here blesses the Advent Wreath. Theresa Risola and Joe Lees represent the Student Body in leading the Advent Wreath prayers. The girls choir sang the hymn for the occasion. Distinguished Visitors During the last few months Bourgade has had several distinguished visitors. Coming to see us from the Marist Fathers' General House in Rome, Italy, was the Very Reverend James Lambert, S.M. , Secretary General of the Society of Mary. Father Lambert was making his canonical visitation of the Phoenix Marist establish- ment. Pictured here with Mrs. Reardon and Father Hillmann, S.M. , Father Lambert goes over the financial accounts as part of his visitation. Yet another distinguished guest was Reverend Mother Mary Nicholas, C.H.M. , Superior General of the Humility Sisters. Mother Mary Nicholas came to see us from Ottumwa, Iowa. L-R. Fr. Hillmann, Sr. Augustine, the Reverend Mother General, Sr. Si- mone, and Sr. Lorene. The Very Reverend Julian S. Marquis, S.M. , Provincial Superior of the San Francisco Province of the Society of Mary, honored Bourgade with a visit on the occasion of his canonical visitation ofthe Marist Fathers house in Phoenix. No record of Bourgade High School would be complete without a mention of our Bourgade Home and School Association. The Home and School Association has clone much to help with providing various needs at Bourgade. The contribution of this organization towards the bettering of our school cannot be counted in dollars and cents, although their generous work has brought us much in this line. It is the FAMILY SPIRIT that animates these good fathers and mothers and friends of Bourgade that has done so much for us. All at Bourgade are most grateful to our efficient and zealous Home and School Association. Mrs. Don Warner Religion - irls fi.. They later on put this why into action throughout their whole school life, and it is hoped will continue to use their knowledge as long as they live. Religion Class is always an im- portant part of each day at Bourgade High School. Well, sometimes they do. . .it all depends on what's being studied .... and what you have to do with what's being studied. Sister Mary Lorene 's students are getting very adept with scapel and whatnot. Take a look at the picture. . . Cathy Connell really doesn't think it as funny as Norma Terborg would have us believe! The big event of the year was the BOURGADE FAIR .... ..... Roses for the Queen ......... Every Fair has a Queen. Bourgade's Queen of the Fair was crowned by Monsignor Gordon and received a bou- quet of red roses from Father Hillmann. A real Queen, Nancy Facio reigned over the Fair with regal beauty and grace. Nancy received the hon- or as a result of hard work in a busy election campaign. The Fair Entertainment ,Q .nl NATIVE ARIZONA INDIAN DANCES .... .. .AND. . .THE FAMOUS NUINSKI PUPPETS. . . . The celebrated Hoop Dancers from St. John Indian Mission performed many intricate and in- 's ternationally famous dances at the Bourgade Fair. Costumes made of native materials added gay color to the interesting stories told by the In- dians in their dances. Everyone who saw the performance praised the young men for the real artistry they mani- fested. . . .And then there was the marvelous Puppet Show put on by Tamara Nijinsky and her troupe. Youngsters of all ages were enthralled by the life- like actions of the teddy bears and other animals. Bourgade was honored to have such a famous puppeteer perform at our Fair. . .Too bad Tamara is not peeking out in this picture. . . Dances Q ,.,...-ve 3 C l New l l . .Some wink, huh? . .THE WINNAH ! Blue Angels Visits Bourgade wlkdlll: Q sur Very few schools can actually have living, talking mascots! Bourgade has them and they are the most. The Navy's Blue Angels are our mascots and they are also our very good friends. The Blue Angels are especially interested in Bourgade and have shown this by visiting us, appearing at our benefit dance, and also giving us several autographed pictures for our school. Pictured above are: Marque, Kalkbrenner, Mandau, Lt. Robert Cowles, Richardson, Burns and McCormack, on the occasion of our famous BLUE ANGEL ASSEMBLY when Lt.
