Sports ..... Student Life . . . Advertisements . . . .. . Now that 1979 has arrived, we are ending another decade that has been filled with many memorable events-a decade that we can reflect on. During the 70's we have had our share of triumphs, victories, and happy times. The whole world rejoiced when American astronauts walked and worked for hours on the moon's surface. A few years later, America's longest war was brought to an end when the Vietnam Peace Pact was signed. Our Bicenten- nial celebration renewed America's patriotism. The last decade also marks a period of growth at Bound Brook High School, with Co-ed gym classes and increased participation in girls' sports. A refurbished gym, auditorium, and cafeteria along with the landscaping behind the school also show signs of progress at B. B. H. S. But we also shared tragedies and sad times. President Nixon resigned after the Water- gate truths were revealed. The deaths of Elvis Presley, Pope Paul Vl, and Pope john Paul I left the world in shock. The great flood put Bound Brook on the map. These are only a few reflections which will someday help us to remember life in the 7O's. One of the best ways to remember, however, is to look at some of the people of the 7O's. This is Bound Brook High School in 1979. , W 'M' 4 w..,,M R sf Q :ak f ff sis ocigcs f 3 A 1 7' . w n Xu . v Mm m y , , ff' Q '4 Y, ww ' W f Hia' f ws . , 3 HRM ......, W1 mg Q i if ' A, -ubgif P, mfw 5? y 5 V sguq, u,!k ,V -4, , 12 , ,f5'f '!ffff QL f X' -5 5 ' A ETWM mf ' WMM QL, .W f 9 - 4 . These funds together with money made from basketball concessions will be used partly to offset the cost of a class trip to Great Adventure which is scheduled for the early spring. On the contrary, the members of the Board are willing to give up many hours of their time to try to provide the best education possible for the students of Bound Brook. The Board of Educa- tion, which consists of and is elected by the citizens of Bound Brook, sets the policy for the entire Bound Brook School System. Mr. Donnelly and Nlr. Spain then put the policy into effect. One of the most important aspects of the Board is that it is not out of touch with the students. The Student Council sends a representative to almost every Board meeting. Special meetings are also arranged to hear the suggestions or complaints of the students. At any school event Qathletic contest, concert, etc.l it is possible to find one or more members of the Board, once again pro- viding proof of the Board's interest in the students. S., the Guidance Department has not undergone any changes in administrative structure. The only major change to occur in i978-79 has been an increased effort to establish a career resource center. lt is very helpful for a student to know what he intends to do after high school by the time he is a sophomore. For that reason, many books, magazines, and other materials are being collected to help a student choose a career. The Project is a detailed method to help students become skilled writers. The use of such tech- niques as slotting, expanding, and outlining has already had an effect on student writing. Another major change in the English Department will take place next year. The phase-elective program for juniors and seniors is being elimi- nated. Taking its place will be a semester curriculum. Each year a student will take one semester of required English. The other semester, the student will be given an opportunity to choose one of four English courses. These elective courses are composed of the more popular phase-electives such as Science Fiction, The Detective Story, Worlds Beyond Reason, and Creative Writing. By reducing thirty-three electives down to eight, it is hoped that the scheduling problem will also be reduced. The English Department is comprised of itop row, left to rightj Chair- person Dennis Donahue, Marge Anton, Kathy Battaglia, judy Gerber, Tony Kruzelg Cbottom row, left to rightj Christopher Nlorley, john O'Connor, Victor Saginario, Edith Trautwein, and Dianne Wagner. .ff N' . its Soon English classes will return to the traditional division between fupper rightj and seniors fabovej. The State of New jersey has established certain levels of mathematical ability which must be reached by students before they can be granted a high school diploma. Remediall math classes are Bound Brook's answer to the state requirement. 1 The horizon also holds some innovations for B, B. H. S. ln the planning stages is a computer course for grades nine through twelve. The benefits of estab- lishing a Math Lab for use by students during study hall periods is also being investigated. Finally, more use of calculators in the classroom is being planned. The figuring of speeds, feeds and gear ratios certainly proves the need for accurate mathematics. A good application of physics can help determine which tool to use for a specific job, and how to set it up. Even the less technical subjects, such as Social Studies, models and displays built in the Industrial Arts laboratory can further help understanding. ln some ways the various character building traits learned in a good Industrial Arts program may be of more importance to the academic area. This learned behavior is vital for social, business or personal success later in life. The ability to work in harmony with a group, to get along together, and to develop a sense of craftmanship is critical regardless of one's future vocation or profession. Basic organization, good housekeeping and neatness, plus the ability to see a project through to the end, will always be valuable traits. Shop or laboratory work is also excellent training in patience in addition to developing an excellent background in the general rules of common sense and safety. No longer are the courses regarded as fun and games or easy pass. Many students are working on or near college level. The current aim is for originality rather than copying works from magazines or music from records. A new course added this year is the teaching of guitar. Other plans for the future involve incorporation of a textile course taught by one or more teachers. The Fine Arts Department is also trying to purchase more equipment such as potters wheels and looms so that more fields of art can be explored. The Music Section of Fine Arts consists of lfrom left to rightl Chairperson Herbert Benge, Mace Loock, and Diane Nelson. Next is the Art Section with Kathryn Davitt and Greg Miller. C. O. E. lCoopera- tive Office Educationl is still an integral part of the Business Department. In this special program, twenty students go to school for part ofthe day and work in an office part of the day. However, not all students can fit C. O. E. into their schedules. Sometimes the students are enrolled in dual programs, involved with extracurricular activities, have home responsibilities, do not have the necessary transportation, or many other reasons. To remedy this situation, the Business Department is planning to set up an in-house, teacher directed, office simulation. Another innovation in the Business Department is the word processing learning center to prepare students for magnetic media: data processing from transcribers and text-editing equip- ment, modern methods infput outfput, retrieval, and filing. Although in the planning stages, the word processing learning center is designed to give slower students more learning time to master job entry skills which companies usually cannot do because of lack of time for training. This year, the major change has involved the transfer ofthe universal gym from the fieldhouse to the gymnasium. The universa gym makes it possible for more students to use weight training to achieve bettel muscle tone and physical fitness. The scheduling of double gym periods has prover to be somewhat of a problem, therefore, this year some classes meet for single gyd periods. i The Physical Education Department is made up of ftop row left to righ Chairperson Sam Gramiccioni, Athletic Director Mike Schibanoff jack Kelly 1 Steffner, Chris Steffner' Qbottom row, left to right Kathy Stiebritz Nancy Y 1-L: .5 .M .4 f, 1 7 1 , , .1 .f ff!! ,f J! v :WM 1641 'X if J fxffl rfvf' 1 4 z, ffff ,mff f ff f ff, ..,,N., Alf, f ,fff 1 ,. um, A ,Q , ,AL .,f,,,,,ff f ff f f fnff.-ff f f w ff f . ff f-.mffm 4,-f.. ,f , ,'-ffw,-X K f f ,,f,, . ffxffwff ,' ,f ,1f.1f,f,f , 1 ,f, ,,,,,f ,f ,f ,, ffxff ff 1 1 1 , I N, if 9 F fx, ,l 429 f vi I' :GMI 1' Af .f f .f , V ff, rv 1 f fffff fl f ff! r vi :N R X QNYA fs X iX'HQO Q M '4 .rv 'ma Q x History's Getting Better All the Time The curriculum of the Social Studies Department has been improved, especially in terms of updating present courses of study. This would result in a reduction of mini courses or doing away with them totally. Another highlight of the Social Studies Department is the involvement of students in trips and projects. From September through October, many students worked on a voter registration drive. In October and November the students con- ducted a pre-election telephone poll. Every member has at least a 3.3 grade point average, belongs to at least three organizations, and has been highly rated by teachers in the areas of leadership and character. The guest speaker at the N. H. S. induction ceremonies was Father Eugene Prus, Pastor of St. Mary's Church. Student speeches were made by Diane Gombeda on scholarship, Lynda Paduch on leadership, Brenda Sara on service, and Maureen Yanchuk on character. The National Honor Society is responsible for Student Exchange Day, a program called lt's Aca- demic which matches scholars from many area schools in an academic quiz program, and tutoring. The N. H. S. is led by President Carl Franzetti, Vice President Donna Bodnar,Secretary Maureen Yanchu k, and Treasurer Shari VanDoren. The Gold Double B is another honor organi- zation. Meets the Challenge Future Shock is here. lt is no longer possible for students to learn all the knowledge required from books and lectures. A. V. is no longer an aid, it is a necessity. Films, slides, video tapes, records, and film- strips are valuable assets for the study of any subject. Equally important are the students who deliver and collect all the A. V. apparatus. Students arrive at school early in the morning to begin setting up and delivering equipment. They also stay long after school to check and collect equipment. Anyone who has watched an interesting film in Social Studies or seen an exciting video tape in Science Fiction can really appreciate the efforts of this organization. . Musicians Swing at B. B. H. . Sometimes people just tap their feetg sometimes they whistle. But if a person is really interested in music, he usually joins the band or chorusg if he is really interested, he joins Bel Cantos or the jazz Band. Bel Cantos is composed of chorus members who want to go beyond the musical offerings of the chorus. Members have to audition for the group. They must also be willing to give up a lot of time after school for practice. But the results are worth it. Bel Cantos performs not only at B. B. H. S., but at malls and hospitals throughout the state. The jazz Band, although a credited course, also requires a great deal of home practice. Students do not sign up for the course unless they are willing to really study their instruments. Once again, the hours of practice result in fine performances. . 1. -va veg. T' - Ti. The SEARCHLIGHT staff would like to put out eight to ten issues a year, but as of February, only one paper was published. The staff is currently considering ways of giving students credit in an English course for writing news stories. The SEARCHLIGHT staff includes Paul Dura, First Page Editor, Stan Zagula, Second Page Editor, Shari Van Doren, Third Page Editor, Beanie DeRosa, Fourth Page Editor, Patty Viscione, Art Editorg David Wells, Distribution Editor, and Bennett Galvacky, Photographer. The Artists are Scott Ciencin, Helga Grev, and Donna Sloben. lVlr. O'Connor is the advisor. The El.YSlUlVl has been in existence for over twenty years, but it has been known by many differ- ent names such as ECLIPSE OF THE MIND, XANADU, and HELICON. ELYSIUM gives all stu- dents the opportunity to express their minds and to have their creative expressions published. The stu- dents also get the satisfaction of putting the magazine together, from the illustrations to the final layout. Mr. Donahue has been the advisor for the past five years, and he feels it is worth the effort to help the students in their creative endeavor. Among their activities were a Halloween trip to Somerset Medical Center, a Christmas project with the Key Club, ushering at Back to School Night as well as other school functions, and a trip to New York just for fun. The officers of the Z Club are President Angel Longo, Vice President Tina Mickel, Secretary Mary Beth Sara, and Treasurer Debby Lore. The Key Club also had a rather active year by sponsoring a basketball game with professional base- ball players and a chicken bar-b-que at the 4-H Fair. The club finished its year with its traditional State Convention. The Key Club is led by President Bruce Locke, Vice President Richard Sands, Secretary Tom Trombadore, Treasurer Pg Steinhauser. Bill Vadinsky and lack Schrader serve as Sergeants-at-Arms. Mr. Don Grimes and Nlr. Barry Franzyshen are the advisors to the club. The Interact Club, under the leadership of lVlr. Finnerty, kept busy this year by keeping the current events sign up to date. The primary purpose of the sign is to keep people aware of the numerous school activities occurring throughout the year, but the sign has also been used for inspirational messages as well. Another important responsibility of the club is to operate the satellite libraries throughout the school. The Z Club can always be counted on to assist people in need 120 The Interact Club poses in front of their current events sign. S. are usually so large that they require the efforts of at least three different organizations. One of the main organiza- tions is the B. B. H. S. Players. The Players conduct acting classes and folk dance classes throughout the year. This year they performed BRECHTGN BRECHT as a tournament play. However, one of the club's most important activities is the spring musical which involves students, teachers, and citizens of the town. CAROUSEL is scheduled for April and, if past per- formances are any indication, should be a smash hit. The B. B. H. S. Players are led by President Robert Romano, Vice President Chris Albert, Secretary Nancy Preteska, Treasurer Maureen Mulvihill, and Historian Scott Kincel. Mr. Saginario serves as advisor. If a student takes an active part in the work of the B. B. H. S. Players, he or she may be elected into the International Thespian Society. The International Thespian Society is an honor organization. Among its many activities the Society raises money each year for a scholarship for one of its senior members. The Society is led by President Bob Wentworth and Vice President Larry Gambino. The advisor is Mr. Saginario. Of course none of the stage productions can take place without the expert work of the Stagecrafters. These students do the creative and imaginative lighting and scenery for all assemblies, plays, and con- certs. The organization is Ied by President Chris Albert, Vice President Patty Salvatore, and Treasurer Kelly Clark. Mr. Miller is the advisor. Three big organizations involved with the stage are the B. B. The turnout at the first drive, October l0, was so enthus- iastic that another one was planned for the spring. In the same vein was a Non-Smoking Program for stu- dents and teachers during the months of November and December. Other activities sponsored by the StudentCouncil are a car rally, a student fair, a school picnic, and various dances held throughout the year. The officers of the Student Council are President Richard Sands, Vice President Brian Gibbs, Corresponding Secretary Brenda Sara, Recording Secretary joe Wroblewski, and Treasurer Paul Dura. While winning the Valley Division of the Mountain Valley Conference, the Crusaders recorded impressive victories over lmmaculata, 6-0, Kenilworth, 18-8, Manville, 24-0, and Metuchen, 20-8. The only conference loss came against Roselle Park, 14-O. Other regular season wins came against Bernards, 32-14, Middlesex, 16-15, and Green Brook, 146. The only other regular season loss came against Somerville on Thanksgiving Day, 24-O. This years team was also Central jersey runners-up by decisively defeating Keansburg, 20-16, and Green Brook, in the midst of controversy, 18-8. The Crusaders lost in the Central jersey finals against a tough Highland Park team, 24-6, while playing on a rain drenched field in freezing weather. High Powered Gffense The Crusader offense, led by the running of tailback and cocaptain Larry Gambino C1462 yards rushing and 10 touchdownsj and the expertise of junior quarterback Nick Palzcuk j36 completions for 437 yards and five touchdownsj compiled a total of 2806 yards and 168 points. An important factor in the success of this year's team was the versatility of the offense. When the running game, led by Gambino l6.06 averagej, jack Schrader i463 yards for a 4.13 averagej, and joe Minerd C156 yards for a 7.42 averagej wasn't working, Palzcuk switched to the aerial route. The success of the passing game this year was instrumental in achieving the outstanding record of 9-3. The receivers, led by seniors Bob Mackey l18 receptions for 188 yardsj, Pg Steinhauser l1O receptions for 143 yardsj, and junior Ben Fiorentino ls receptions for 56 yardsj, combined to score 60 points. It is a proven fact that the offensive line either makes or breaks a team, and this year's record is indicative of the fact that the Crusaders' cast was second to none. The line was led by seniors Dave Wolk, guard, Ken Morrissey, guard, Brian Gibbs and Tom Applegate, centers, and Pat lzzo, tackle. Also turning in impressive performances were senior john Wroblewski, junior joe Ciminelli and sophomore Mike Peppe rotating at the left tackle position. Another sign of an outstanding team is the ability to rebound after a key injury. This trait was clearly evident when senior Ken Barna, coming off of an earlier injury himself, filled in late in the season for injured quarterback Nick Palzcuk and turned in a fine performance. With the success of this year's team, Coach Eutsler can be very optimistic about next year. With an outstanding corps of underclassmen returning, including juniors Nick Palzcuk, Ben Fiorentino, and joe Ciminelli and sopho- mores Tom Wolk, Mike Peppe, and Steve Morrissey, the outlook for the future looks bright. l l Larry Gambino jupper rightj breaks away. The Crusader defense, led by senior linebacker and co- captain lack Schrader, allowed the opponents only a stingy 136 points in 12 games. The defense also accomplished an almost impossible feat by registering three safeties in the season including two in one game. Outstanding performances were turned in this year by seniors Schrader, Pg Steinhauser, defensive back, Bob Mackey, defensive back, Ken Morrissey, end, joe Porembo, tackle, and Dave Wolk, middle guard. juniors john Maggio and Carmine Pirone, and sophomores Fred Pirone and Ken Spiller, helped the staunch defense gain its tough reputation. The defense registered two shutouts: lmmaculata 60 and Manville 24-0, and proved extremely rapacious in the other games. With the outstanding performances turned in by under- classmen on this year's unit, the tradition of tough defenses at Bound Brook seems to be in safe hands. . gls, Q, , l l Schrader fupper righti makes a crunching stop at the goal line. Out- standing performances were turned in by Dennis Romano, nose guard, Steve Morrissey, end, and Fred Pirone, linebacker. The offensive standouts were high scoring Tom Wolk, halfback, Mike Peppe, end, and one of the most improved line- men Ken Bedi, guard. Coach Franzyshen was also quick to add that Ken Spiller, who was out all season with an injury, would have helped the team tremendously. 146 Freshman TeamefFirst Row, left to rightl R. Other achievements this year included a third place in the Bernard's Invitational, a fourth place in the Shore lnvitational, a third place finish in the Mountain Valley Conference, a second place in the Central jersey Group I Tour- nament, and a fourth place in the Group I State Meet. For Coach Bauer, who smashed the 100 win barrier this year, it was, One hell of a season. A season marked with injury, illness, and lack of depth turned into a very successful season through guts, hard work and determination from all mem- bers. Experience in a winning tradition played an important role in this year's season and this exper- ience was provided by a solid core of seniors: Captain Tom Trombadore, Cocaptain Stephen Lee, Ken Lewis, Brian Sudano, and john Machala. juniors: Frank Nanna and Bruce Enalls turned in excellent performances throughout the year, while Todd Teryek and the famed Charlie Lewis provided the team with guts and grins. The mainstay of the team, however, was only a sophomore. Super Soph, Dan Kopf, led the team to endless victories. He was only the second Bound Brook harrier to make the N. j. Three of the girls qualified for the sectionals: Patty Nloraski, in vaulting and bars, Laura Keogh, in vaulting, and Theresa Boyea, on beam. Patty Moraski also took a second place in vaultingin the Somerset County Tournament where she scored an 8.7. Patty won the team's Most Valuable Player award. She, along with Laura Keogh, is a senior, the rest of the squad consists of underclassmen which helps make the future look brighter. Seniors accounted for most of the action. Bill Vadinsky was super all year with his 21 point scoring average and his contribution of 13 rebounds per game. Bill wound up with a career total of 1314 points, making him the all-time leading scorer at B. B. H. S. Another potent offensive machine was Brian Sudano who hit for almost 15 points per game. Mark Wooden was an all-around type ballplayer who averaged 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. Ken Lewis was yet another double figure scorer with an 11 points per game average. Scott Truesdale provided much of the muscle under the boards and grabbed 8 rebounds per game. He was spelled by Rick Sands, who added an average of 3 rebounds per game. Other seniors who helped through the long season were Pat lzzo and Craig Greco. The only underclassman to see any amount of varsity action was joe D'Alessandro. Some big hitters are also returning as in the case of Brian Sudano, Pg Steinhauser, Ron Ambrose, and Perry Sacca. All in all, the team shapes up as I having great speed, thus, they should be running a lot. At the very least, the team will be exciting to watch. Coach Martin was quick to point out that i978 ' graduation did cause some losses. Coach Martin lleftl hopes that last year's play will help the performances of Pg Steinhauser fupper leftl, Bob Resuta lupper rightl, john Maggio fcenter leftl, Greg DePaolo fcenter rightl, and Ken Barna fabovel. 175 This Could Be the Year for Softball Coach Yuzuik predicts that the '79 Softball Team will be every bit as good as last year's l4-6 team. One of the main reasons for this bright outlook is the return of MaryAnn Tarantino who batted .709 last year and made All-State. Another hot hitter, Nancy Grabener l.408l will also be back for her senior year. Two returning pitchers, junior Tracey Stewart and sophomore Donna Orlando, help the squad out in that department. Another outstanding defensive player, junior Trish Nlirando, will also be back for another season. After placing second in the conference last year year, Coach Yuzuik is hoping that this may be the year to win it all. Coach Yuzuik also mentioned the strong jV Squad which should be a factor throughout the season. . . . . any Maw. .. Z. If M 4' Th' ,N 'pax 'ff ff ' 2' Y H , .t A 1.5.4 - ' v if . Much of this optimism rests with veteran letter winners like Stephen Lee C880 and 440l, Mark Wooden ilong jump, dashes, 440, and relayj, Ken Lewis flong jump, high jump, and hurdlesj, Dan Kopf ltwo milej, Tom Trombadore itwo milej, Bruce Enalls llong jump, hurdles, and relayj, and Rich Schindelar fpole vaultl. Coach Holiday is also looking for some help from last year's freshman squad. About the only area that could use help is in the weights, but Coach Steffner is bound to find some athletes to fill the gaps. M 9 E if if as 'Wf Wi? Coach Holiday lupper rightj surveys his team and likes what he sees. Rich Schindelar labovej flies through the air via a pole, while Bruce Enalls lleftl flies without one. 179 Girls' Track Shaping Llp Coach Bauer feels that the '79 Girls'Track Team should reach at least a .500 record. His two biggest point getters will be Tammy Violka ll0O, discus, shotput, and relayl and Beth Ryan fhurdles, iavelin, long jump, and 22Ol. The longer races, such as the 880, the mile, and the two mile, should be handled by lVlaryAnn Trombadore, Lisa Stewart, and Theresa Howell. Nlaria Rodriguez should also do well by con- tributing points in the lO0,440, and relay. Other girls who should be awarded points will be Patty Holub fspringsl, Cathy Schuyler lhurdles and 88Ol, and Diane Gaglia lweightsl. ss . Beanie DeRosa iupper rightl gives the shotput a shot, while Lynda Paduch iupper leftl works on the discus. Working to build endurance and speed are Cathy Schuyler fcenterl and Bernadette Ulmer lcenter rightl. Tammy Violka fabovel throws the discus, while Beth Ryan irightl practices her hurdling technique. 180 Golf and Tennis: Too Close to Call Both the Golf and Tennis teams are somewhat npredictable at this time. Both teams have lost out- tanding players. The Tennis team, however, seems to e in the better shape. lack Eustace and Carmine xirone are returning and both will be fighting for the number one position. Carl Franzetti and Tom Smith are also returning. Coach Augus is optimistic. Based pn early spring practices, the team looks as if it lhould win its share of matches. Golf, on the other hand, faces a season of iebuilding. New coach, lack Eutsler who has not poached golf for years, will be returning to the helm. The only golfer returning from last year's squad will e john Fasanella. lt could be a tough year, but oach Eutsler is always full of surprises. r Q- ff T 5 ,, f y f. ,if gi- tvwf .. if 'T ef jigghtiisg .': arf' 4 T, ,. . for top spot on the Tennis Team will be jack Eustace leftl and Carmine Pirone labovel.
