For THE CLASS OF 1962 BOUND BROOK HIGH SCHOOL BOUND BROOK, NEW JERSEY THEME IDEA AND ART WORK By Diane Felkowski UVEWOWZ OUR HANDS ARE A SYMBOL of our hopes and achieve- ments. They have helped us to obtain those things of which we have dreamed 5 they will, properly used, help us to attain future goals. But our hopes are valid only if we are willing to transform them from idle dreams into reality, our achievements worthy of praise only if we use them as a basis for further accomplishments. To this concept is The 1962 Echo Theme dedicated. THADDEUS TULEJA Editor-in-Chief PAGE 4 MRS. JAMES F. STEIDLE Qedzm izbn THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1962 are dedicating their Echo to a person who has been both an efficient instructor and a de- voted friend. She has distinguished herself by her diligence in classroom instruction, her concern for each of her students individ- ually, and her interest in the cheerleaders. Mrs. Steidle's geniality and vitality were inspirations to every one of us who knew her. Neat, bright, and cheery, she put each of us at ease by her mere presence. Her lectures were not only precise and scholarly, but also animated , never clouded by wordiness, they were enriched by her sparkling wit. Moreover, Mrs. Steidle was always ready to help us. Before, during, and after classes, she was prepared and willing either to elucidate unclear items or merely to chat with her students. This helped us both mentally and emotionally. For her untiring efforts to be a patient ad- visor and an interested friend to each o-f us, we dedicate the 1962 Echo to Mrs. james F. Steidle. BROKAW 1 President, Board of Education Superintendent of Schools Board Secretary The graduating class of 1962, com- posed of sons and daughters of the area's citizens, has attained high stand- ards of excellence while attending the Bound Brook schools. Whether in pursuit of further edu- cation or vocation, Bound Brook may be assured of a constant outstanding performance by these young men and women. They, in turn, have become fine citizens worthy of taking their place in the community. Ross A, SLINGMAN President, Board of Education To the Class of 1962: I hope that your minds are filled with big and searching questions, such as what is the chief end of man?,' or what am I here for?,' If they are, you may learn that there is much more to life than growth, self-fulfillment, and becoming what you ought to be. You may learn that the great use of life is to spend it for something that will out- last it. RALPH P. GALLAGHER Superintendent of Schools My congratulations to each member of this wonderful class. I hope that you will persistently follow a course in life that you know is honest and true and that these studies which you have just completed will have even greater mean- ing in the years ahead. SPERDLITO CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '62, have finally reached the end of four busy years of high school. We entered as freshmen with the most successful magazine drive in history. We took pleasure in our picnic, skating party, and dance. As sophomores, we became more active in all functions of the school. Our main event of the year was the Sophomore Sock Hop, which took on an informal air with all dancing in socks. Our picnic and skating party were also successful. As juniors, and upperclassmen, we found delight in bossing freshmen and holding the second biggest dance of the year, the junior Prom. Our theme was Wonder- land By Night. All had a marvelous time, but some disappointment was expressed by the decoration committee when a mural fell. The following September we began our final year at B.B.H.S. We worked hard at editing the Echo and Searchlight, and our athletic teams held high honors in all sports. We shall never forget our class trip which highlighted our senior year. Through the years, B.B.l-l.S. has become an integral part of our lives. It will certainly take an adjustment after graduation finding that we are no longer united with this great association, our Alma Mater to be. Class Council Tirst row: Rita Freedman, Robert jannone, Chris Yarnell. Second row: Robert Lapinski, Vicki Mat thews, Thaddeus Tuleja. Third row: Karen Carlson, Stanley Dreswick, Carol Masters. ml .II WHEN, IN THE couRsE OF HIGH SCHOOL events, it becomes necessary for one class to dissolve the bonds which have connected it with others and to assume other responsibilities, it is essential that successive classes nobly uphold' the traditions of this institution. Therefore, we the Class of 1962, do 'hereby bequeath to our successors and advisors our great honor and fortunes. V' PAGE 62 QA Senior and W'if6J MFAREWELL TO BOUND BROOK HIGH SCHOOL For four years now, we have trampled through your halls, slammed your lockers, scribbled on your desks, and lunged through your use-worn doors at the end of the day. We took you for granted and dreamed of the day when we would be free to wander in the ruts fate has carved for us. Graduation was only a word until now. Somehow the things we couldn't wait to leave behind have come to be major fea- tures in our daily routines. We will miss your football games at LaMonte field. Soon our cheers will fade , no longer will B.B.H.S. be ours, instead you will fall into the fumbling 'hands of the generations to come. We will remember those crisp fall mornings when the drums of your band combined with rattling papers and rambling lectures. Your new addition will knit together with the rest of your tired body and our names will no longer echo in its crowded halls. The center section of your audi- torium will not belong to us as it has this past year. We will be ignorant of your assemblies and plays. We will sing your sad song of the Watchung Mountains no more and it will grow dim in our memories as will the things about you we disliked. We will remember your teachers, dear old lady, and most of them will remember us. Mr. Rodgers will demand complicated notebooks, Mr. Eppley will lecture on how to do Algebra l the hard way, Mr. Weidner will call for perfect S.O.P., Mr. Steidle will interrupt his classes to tell of his baseball days, Mr. Stearns will throw chalk, and Miss Hauber will ask for outlines on how to write outlines for many years to come. How could we forget wide tie day , the Somerville pep rally, our great basket- ball team, the gym exhibition, the prom when one of the walls fell down, our S-enior Ball and trip, the Echo dances, the last assembly when that lump in our throats bnmmt a tear to many an eye, and most of all, how could we forget you? You are forced upon us now, but later, not too much later, we will be on our own to use the knowledge we have taken from your battle-worn rooms to earn a living. Then, and only then, will we realize how you have guided us with your steady, experienced, and, sometimes, harsh hand. lt is not enough to say thank-you, you do not have time in your long journey to pause and look over your shoulder to give a nod of acknowledgment. I hope our class has helped your great name. Protect our trophies, digest our harsh criticisms, keep our spirit alive, and treat our children and grandchildren with those kid gloves you wear. We know you well and'love you deeply, thank you and farewell. JUDIE WALL QA Facult and Writes. .. FOR SENIORS If 7f you have learned mistakes are waysof learning That all will make, that teachers are your friends, That they are hest when they are most demanding, And that your education never ends, 7f you have learned that grades are rings on targets Put there to help you really hit the mark, And that if youre a cheater, you're the cheated To turn from truth and light to choose the dark, if you have learned that facts are tools of learning To help you think, that judging is your aim -To find the facts, then weigh in halanced measure And count that good which has the hetter claim, Tf you have learned that rules are made for reasons The purpose heing that they help us all, And that the heart in youth will have its seasons And like the tides ofspring will rise and fall, Tf you have learned to laugh, hut not at others, And to he clean in hody, soul, and mind, flf you have learned that you hest star in teamwork, And most of all the gift of heing kind, flf you have learned that you must serve to master And having mastered, then you owe your hest, lf you can smile when you have met disaster And start to work again with greater zest, Tf you have found all men are really hrothers And that together we must rise or fall, That he who does the most in helping others Ts at the last the greatest of us all, Tf you regard your promise once it's given As sacred as an altar's holy flame And treasure most of all things under heaven your self-respect as well as your good name, flf you have learned that error's often lauded, That truth is very diffcult to find, you will have earned that coveted diploma And what is more, you'll have a well-trained mind. JAMES GONNERTON CLASS I-HSTGRY Entering B.B.l-I.S. this year, our class missed many of the Franklin students who had been with us for two years. The junior Sports Dance, our first social activity, rounded off a mildly successful football season during which all our junior class sportsmen played on the varsity squad. ln other sports our teams did very well. The results of our November elections showed Bill Kline, president, Francis Rick, vice- president, Pat Maltese, corresponding secretary, Marilyn Rossi, recording secretary, and james Connerton, treasurer. Who will ever forget our junior Prom? As we entered the gaily decorated gym, passing by balconies of Old New Orleans and emerging from a clown's smile, we were put in a mood of the Mardi Gras that lasted the entire evening. Other decorations, such as the masquerade party, ballerina and harlequin, the intricate streamers, and the float, reflected the time and effort put into them. Finally the king and queen were crowned under a balloon barrage. Now we await our senior year, but we hold fond memories of 1961-62. FURINO CLASS HISTORY We look back on our sophomore year as one in which we became a more in- tegral part of the school and its activities. Contributing to the success of the past year were our officers, which we elected early in November joyanne Carroll was elected president, Frank Warner, vice- president, jack Prugh, treasurer, Peggy Smith, secretary. Perhaps the biggest event of the year for us was our Sophomore Sock Hop, the theme of which was Under a Christmas Tree. There will probably never again be an opportunity for us to dance underneath a Christmas tree among gaily wrapped presents and toy trains. We instituted what we hope will become a custom by collecting money from the students in order to buy a Christmas basket for the needy. Both girls and boys contributed actively to sports and made up a large part of the junior varsity teams. We ended our year with the annual class picnic. As we complete the first half of our high school education, we look ahead to the future and wonder if we will ever have the same exciting opportunities that were open to us before. Like many classes before us, we had a successful magazine drive. Our mascot, Yogi Bear, was awarded to the band homeroom for the highest sales. There was much conflict about the nominees for our class officers. Petitions circulated through our student body. When we did have the election, Alan Beatty was elected president, Chuck Esposito, vice-president, Judi Rotunno, secretary, and Cathy Gallo, treasurer. Our almost invincible football team lost only two games. The gaily colored geometric leaves added a spark of life to our school day. In 202, where many dissections took place, something else held our interest-the walking desks. Our English teachers introduced us to Ivanhoe, a new friend Cor was he?D. A good time was had by all at the Freshman Dance. We now look forward to attending the second assembly and having the many joys of being a sophomore. CLASS HISTORY As we stand on the threshold of high school, we find that school is not all work. There are dances and parties, plays and concerts, trips and finally graduation. The eighth grade students participated in many more activities this year along with our own dances sponsored by the newly created Club 87. This club was organized as a service club to work within the seventh and eighth grades. There were also more fields of sports opened to the eighth grade pupils: modern dancing for the girls and bowling for both boys and girls. An Evening of Music and Drama with the Seventh and Eighth Graders was presented February 17. The annual eighth grade trip was a boat excursion around Man- hattan lsland and a memorable visit to the towering United Na- tions Building in New York City. Last, but not least, was the eighth grade graduation. This was probably the happiest and most exciting day of the whole school year. Next fall we will be entering the high school as freshmen! The Class of 1967 cLAss HISTORY It's the end of another year and as we look back we re- member how the year started in mass seventh grade con- fusion. However, many seventh graders adapted themselves quickly to their new routine. We enjoyed two sessions of dancing lessons given by Mr. Thomas. Available to us as extracurricular activities were bowling, basketball, wrestling, flag football, modern danc- ing, and volleyball. A new club, Club 87, was formed to replace the seventh and eighth grade student council. This club sponsored dances during the year. A seventh and eighth grade talent show was presented as well as a public speaking contest. This year we took a three-in-one class trip. First stop was Princeton to see Nassau Hall and Morven, the Gov- ernor's home. Then we proceeded to Trenton where we visited the State Capitol and saw the Assembly and the Governor's office. We also toured the State Museum. The trip was highlighted by Independence Hall and Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The musically inclined enjoyed a trip to Carnegie Hall early in the year. B.B.H.S. has shown us a very successful and exciting first year. Now we look forward to eighth grade , one step closer to our goal-graduation. Graduating seniors include Bart Rossi, Stan Dres- wick, Marty Perdue, Richard Sharp, Frank DeLisi, Dave Romanok, and jim Jannone. In Somerset County the Crusaders finished second to Somerville. Their only losses in the county were two to the Pioneers and two to Bridgewater-Raritan. The victories were over Bridgewater- Raritan, Middlesex, Edison and Manville. KEN SINIBALDI , Co-Capt. CHRIS STARBALA Inexperience plus injuries lost many of the meets for the Crusaders.
