McWlLLlAMS For the tremendous school spirit which was reflected in all he did, his great capacity for humor accompanied by a contagious laugh, a sincere dedication to his subject, and a willingness to help anyone at any time, we the class of '56, dedicate our Echo to Emmet F. McWilliams. A graduate of Rutgers University, Mr. McWilliams came to B.B.H.S. in l952. Since we entered in the same year, he became our special friend. Working with the Student Council and the Pep Club were two of his major extra- curricular interests. We will always remember the cheerful atmosphere of room l l0, the ruddy complexion, the Phi Beta' Kappa key, the flair for clothes, and, we hope, a few of the history facts he labored so long and so hard to teach us. fx X QP faculty Greig administration i 5, ki X 6 L X V and ADMINISTRATIO Board of Education Seated, left to right: Iva Maclennan, Dr. Neil Mackenzie lPresidentl, Ross Slingman, Lilyan Adler. Four years ago, after entering as frightened freshmen, we saw only work and the life of an understudy ahead of us. We tried, though, to show our interest by having the usual freshman magazine campaign, skating party, and picnic. As sophomores, we became more active and a better part of our school. We held positions in clubs, and some of us even became dramatists. Our sophomore dance was a great success, and the members of our class represented themselves well at our skating party and picnic. When we returned to school in September, l954, we realized we were no longer understudies, but rather the new starlets who would soon be playing the leads. Our iunior year was a hard one, but it was full of fun too, We had a skating party and picnic, but the biggest moment of the year was our Junior Prom. Our theme, Ebb Tide, was a huge success, and we were all very proud of ourselves. The end of the year found us saying good-bye to our dear friend and counselor, Mr. Nicholls. The following September, we went into production for a final season at B.B.H.S. This time we were the stars, the directors, and the leaders of the school. We had the honor to receive Mr. Jensen as our new principal, and we grew up learning that what was best for the school was not always what we wanted, We worked hard at the iob of editing the Echo and Searchlight, and we took our place in the dramatic field with the presentation of The Bishop's Mantle. Our athletes took their place in all sports, and members of the class of '56 were leaders and participants in all phases of our extracurricular school life. Our goal was finally in view, and we realized that our Senior Ball was the last dance we would hold as a class. We had our Senior Trip, and now it is the moment-the time for us to leave our friends and the fellowship which we enioyed and face the world. Therefore, as we leave you, B.B.H.S., we say good-bye and thank you for the best years of our lives. We hope we have helped to pave a successful way for future classes to follow. I4 Class Will We the class of '56, of the Bound Brook High School, of the town of Bound Brook, county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, being of sound mind, memory and standing, realize that we are ready to depart from our school, and deem it necessary to record a last will and testament on the l9th day of June, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-six. DANIEL ALTIERE Dan was a great asset to B.B.H.S. -both in school government and in football. His winning personality and drive was shown to best ad- vantage as freshman class presi- dent. This senior, who did a splen- did job of rewriting our school constitution, should make a success- ful engineer. Besides 'her delightful hobby of making jewelry from sea shells, Angie had much experience writ- ing letters, which we know will help her to become a top-notch secre- tary. Be- sides singing with the Glee Club, Alice was a member of the Echo circulation and advertising staffs. ROSALIE BIELANSKI Rosalie actively participated in the Mask and Wig and Commercial Clubs while at B.B.H.S. She also enioyed square dancing during her leisure hours. We recall how our skating party was the first one of the year and remember what a success it was. Of course, we can never look back on this last year without thinking of our Junior Prom, which we held at the Elks' Ballroom on January 2l. Our theme of Rhapsody in Blue pro- vided a beautiful atmosphere, with its array of silver stars and blue drapings. Then, too, there was our sport dance, an informal gather- ing which brought an evening of pleasure to many of us. Lastly, we think of our annual picnic, held at the end of the year and one of the pleasant highlights ofthe year. As the program comes to an end, we think for a moment of those students who have brought recognition to our class, either in the field of sports, as cheerleaders or twirlers, or by serving on the important committees, which help to make our school a success. We change the station now, and think about our coming year at B.B.H,S. We realize that our time is running short and wonder what the future holds for our Class of '57. We can only hope that we will find our last year in high school as rewarding as the three preceding ones. Many sophomore boys participated in the school's sports program. All of them did a fine iob and brought much honor to their class and school. Before most of us knew it, our sophomore year had come to a close. The role was about to change, and next year we would all be upperclassmen. We won six, tied one, we were only beaten by St. Peter's. The team showed outstanding ability, even though they played to very few viewers. ln December, students were nominated for class offices. After Christmas vacation, students were elected to fill these offices. We really got the show on the road, and on January 7, our skating party at the Plainfield Rink came into the spotlight, and our rating went way up. ln June we had our annual picnic, and it was a great success. This was the last scene of the first act. Now, with the first act over, we will put away our cameras, booms, and other equipment for the summer intermission. We will soon be back though, longing for the curtain to rise on act two. County-wise the gridders were winless in three tries. Wins were recorded over St. Peter's, Highland Park, and Hamilton, with the South River game ending in a 6-6 tie. , Inability to put together sustained drives was the big drawback to the team's offensive. Dave Ridley and Joe Setteneri proved the best pigskin toters and carried the bulk of the Brook's offensive. Ridley's end runs provided several thrilling moments for Bound Brook fans. The defensive line was the Crusaders strong point. Sparked by seniors Emmett Capanna and Bill DeMato, the line gave ground grudgingly throughout the season. A goal-line stand against St. 'A' X57 Peter's was the high point of the defensive team's performance. Defensive backs Mike Blake and Art Holder broke into the scor- ing columns by scoring on intercepted passes. Coaches Furino, Barile and Rodgers Co-Captain E. Basketball Lacking the necessary height, the Crusader basketball squad finished another season of play with a dismal three win and thir- teen loss record. The cagers opened with a victory over North Hunterdon Regional. The Brook Five followed by stopping Bernards- ville and six games later again turned the trick over the winless Mountaineers. lnconsistant shooting sprees resulted in all of the starting five averaging around ten points a game. Leading the attack were Dave Colombaroni, Tony Barber, Albert Wedderman, Charles Smoot, and Pete Hall. ln addition to Dave and Tony, other seniors on the squad were: Emmett Capanna, Angelo D'Ambolo, John Vayda, Francis Januzzi and Ken Parish. The Crusader Quintet finished third behind North Plainfield and Somerville in the county loop. A loss to North Plainfield put the team in the number two slot in the Somerset Jamboree. Next year, Coach Barile will have to mold a new squad from the JV's. The prospects, however, look good with the calibre of players moving up from the JV and freshman squads. Good luck, Coach Barile. Starting the season with a no-hit, no-run performance by Bob Johnson against Westheld, the Crusader nine continued at a respectable clip all through the season, ending with a 9-5 record, and finishing second in county competition. The Brooks remained in the race right down to the wire, when they were stopped with two solid defeats by the Canucks of North Plainfield. Besides Johnson's stellar mound performances, other out- standing iobs were turned in by John Wasenda, Jim Stone, Mario Maggio, Dick Mignella, and Bob Behler. Wasenda, with his con- sistent hitting, and Stone, a long-ball hitter, led the Red and White attack. Defensively, Mario Maggio in center-field exhibited a fine talent for hauling in those long drives. Dick Mignella's pitching gave Bound Brook a fine one-two mound combination. Behler persevered through several iniuries and was a mainstay at his backstop post. For their fine performances, Stone, Johnson, and Maggio merited All-County honors. For the first time in many seasons, the Crusader cindermen came through with an even .500 year. To climax the season, the squad ranked second behind North Plainfield in the county track meet. Taking all first place awards against Dunellen, the tracksters followed with wins over Bernardsville, South River, and St. Peters. The Crusaders suffered defeats to Somerville, Highland Park, North Plainfield and Westfield. The big triumph of the season was the new school record in the iavelin throw set by Fred Adams in the final meet.
