E D WARD SARA BOUND BROOK HIGH SCHOOL opened the 1942 sea- son with a slashing win over Regional. The score was 37-O. Thus began one of the Crusader's finest sea- sons to date. Upon returning to school, local students discovered a complete new coaching staff because for- mer Head Coach Peel and Assistant Coach Bradford had left for the armed forces. Mr. Haines became head coachf Mr. Dotti and Mr. Savelli b' me assistant coaches. X U Q i - ' . sf 'fs 1 ' 4 ,f i . , K' ' si 1 1 u ' l ' South River dampened an over-confident Crusader spirit by completely out-playing the locals in handing them an 18-O trouncing. The Brown and White recov- ered quickly and battered Plainfield High 33-6 the ensuing week. Bernardsville was the first county mem- ber to fall to the local forces. The score was 24-6. The marching Crusader might disregarded the Union High School jinx and tramped on to win 20-7. Westfield fell 24-7g a powerful Woodbridge squad barely man- aged to tie the locals 6-6. North Plainfield finally took the county championship by tripping the high flying Crusaders 6-O. Bound Brook took revenge and bat- tered the traditional Somerville rival by a 13-6 count. Al Chubby,' Miranda won wide acclaim by lead- ing the section in scoring 84 points. Miranda and Tony Marino are the '4 grid cap ' s. . D ICK CARMEN SCRAPPING never-say-die basketball quintet repre- sented Bound Brook High School on the court in 19-43. The team composed of practically all newcomers, with only three lettermen returning, never stopped fighting until the finish whistle blew. This year's squad was built entirely on team play instead of individual play and no one can be hailed as the star of the season. Although the record was four wins against ten de- feats, this does not really indicate the strength of the team. Two defeats were suffered by a single point margin and they could have been converted into wins with just the slightest help of a little luck. Coach Haines had to experiment with different starting line- ups to see which of the courtsters were ready for start- ing berths, and this accounted for the initial defeats that were suffered. The seasonis percentage was an improvement over last year's mark. To help the morale and to encourage better play, the captain was chosen before each game. An honorary captain was chosen by the team at the end of the season. Hank Karpinski was high-scorer for the year. Other lettermen were Birchak, Miranda, Sulmonetti, and Maimone, guards, Oliver, center, Karpinski, Cher- nock, Grogan, Geba, and Capano, forwards. 4 ffg, waz -sf ' 4, 5, o ASEE LL s .aww .ufnyif-454 fini: Coach ..........,.... ,.,..,...... GEORGE MINERD coMPAcT, smooth playing baseball team was Coach Cramer's assignment last spring. He had to start from scratch and finally managed to put the 1942 edition of the Crusader baseball team on the field. They compiled a record of seven wins and four losses, which, considering all handicaps, was a highly successful season. The team found itself without a single twirler at the beginning of the season. Captain George Minerd filled in on the mound and did an excellent job. He played his third base position when he wasn't pitch- ing. Walt Eigel decided to return to the game and was very useful on the mound. Another valuable member of the team was Chubby Miranda, who alternated at himself capable of turning in a well played game at either position and was a demon at the bat. The team started badly with the hitting power in a slump and the pitching handicapped by poor support. Experience proved to be the deciding factor in the team's campaign and each game saw a better manned nine take the field representing the Brown and White. Ben Oliver, Captain-elect, was sorely missed, be- cause of ineligibility, but returned to pitch in his senior year. The infield was composed of Zujkowski and Donatelli alternating at first base, Barch at second base, with the aforementioned Miranda and Minerd playing shortstop and third base respectively. The out- field featured Blasse, Hall and Marino. Turner, a freshman, proved a find in the catching department. ini fi.
