Mark Brown Benjamin Thompson 55 NFL spends most every Saturday Q6 to Sl at a speech meet. lt seems that despite their efforts. the student body remains generally unaware of their time and effort, The group itself not only spends a lot of time preparing and delivering their speeches, but in representing the schoolg therefore, it seems they should receive as much publicity as the football team, Qwell .. . . . because they come home with honors consistently. Most ofthe tro- phies on display in the school ARE for them, so perhaps next year, they can get a little recognition. BRBC, or Boulder Radio Broadcasting Club, is responsible for the weekly Panther Party, which is broadcast Wednesday nights on KBOL. The show concerns itself with the general affairs of the students, and the more subtle social issues and conditions that exist within the hal- lowed halls of BHS. Some of these features have included Hodd Man Out , a program dealing with prejudice and the black student at Boulder High, and Where Have All the jocks Gone? , which highlight- ed the decline ofthe athlete, and athletics in general at Boulder High. In the fall. some ofthe Keyettesjoin- ed the Key Club and took kids from Boulder Day Nursery to the zoo in Denver, and planned Halloween parties for them. as well as the children in the Follow-Through program at Lincoln School. Throughout the holiday season, the girls sang at various nursing homes around Boulder, and helped with the city-wide CROP drive. Many ofthe members this year were new. but the club maintained a lot of unity, due to President Nancy Coburn's philosophy: Let's have a party! Keyettes Officers-Nancy Hitchcock, Diane Dougherty, Nancy Beal, and janet Beecher a it 'N if A Tru. ,,'n,w1'f,, , wi, ,,., -5- R Key Club The Nonexistent Key Club. Continuing the trend of past years, Key Club's membership dropped in 71-72 to three members at the beginning of the year. Tickets for the tradi- tional Christmas Dance, even the informal dance planned to draw more peo- ple, had to be given away free because nobody wanted to buy them. But wha is a club? Is it a group of people who pay dues and sit through every third meeting? ls it a fancy title and prestige? Ifso, there was no Key Club at BHS this year, But something happened one day this fall between some guys from Key Club, or at least its remnants, and some little kids from Boulder Day Nursery, which is why Key Club has a page at all. These pictures were shot that day, and perhaps come closest to saying what this year's Key Club was all about. Q .rar if Y a. Q Amateur Radio Club 5 Amateur Radio Club took a long time getting organized this year, due to the fact that most ofthe people interested in the club, and Ham radio, didn't have their licenses. However, with the encouragement of Mr. Noss, and Gary Harms, who both have licenses, this situation couldn't last very long. Hopefully, an informal class could be set up to guide and help those working for license, and then the club would really get underway. E. P. This year's -IEP, united by the experiences of some of the members in Japan last summer, prepared to host the students from the sister school in japan this summer. The club en- couraged any interested student to participate in the ex- change by hosting a student in their home, andjoining with the group in picnics and hikes scheduled for the spring and summer. Of course, hosting japanese kids is not cheap, so JEP showed movies, had bake sales, as well as the traditional .IEP valentine sale to raise enough money for the exchange, and pleasant experiences for the Japanese students during their stay in America. Aff! f - Paul Mijac and Stephanie Szobta, officers Ski Club Ski Club is one of those clubs with really enthusiastic mem- bers, they're all crazy about skiing and snow and mountains and everything else associated with the sport, Qexcept, perhaps broken bones!j They get together to see movies, and to plan ski trips. This year, at least one overnighter, and hopefully two, was planned to satisfy even the most avid of skiers, along with many day trips to please every one from the snowplower to the racer. I 1 Lfzvw Science Club Science Club is a diverse group of students who meet once a month to hear speakers of interest to the members, hold discussions, and take care of business. Under Mr. Holland's sponsorship, and the strong back- ing of the Science Department, the club takes a field trip each semester to some region of unique natural interestg this fall, members chose Echo Park as their destination. Field trips seem to be the favorite activities of the club, because members can learn through first hand observation, and have a lot of fun being with everybody else for those three whole days. .-ifiii t q -Q. Putting out a yearbook consists of taking pictures, developing them printing them, cropping them, laying them out, stamping them, num- bering them, and sending them to the publisher. Then you hope all of this comes back as a unified book. You hope! This year the staff was overstaffed to the point of having some peo- ple standing in the hall when everyone tried to come at once to the little-hole-in-the-wall called the Odaroloc room. QNot that that happen- ed often!j An entire day was spent driving almost to Colorado Springs looking forthe Exit 72 sign you see on page 280. The deadlines were met only through the devotion of about four or five people who put out the book practically by themselves. Thanks to the few who helpedg to those who didn't ?M+F ! This fall, the all-school play was Nothing But the Truth , a comedy about a man who could earn 310,000 by telling the truth for twenty-four hours. Sound simple? Well, as the play demon- strates, there is a lot oflying that goes on in the world, and the web one weaves by total truth is almost as difficult to unravel as a web oflies. With newcomer Mark Green, Suzanne Wilson, Gene I-Iaagenson, and Nancy Io Ball in the leads. However, more important than the ac- tual play is the work involved in making it. Thespians find themselves together all the time for rehearsal, and naturally grow very close. The friendships that begin in the group dominate most ofthe high school period, and often last many years, as evidenced by the presence of former Thespians wherever the present club is found. 4, X OfHcersfBrucc Forshay and Rici Peterson 81 Rubber Chucky, You're the one. These shows went on only after the infamous Thursday night rehearsals which any band member will long remember. An addition this year was the sixteen flag girls who gave up hours of their free time to practice for the shows! The band also marched in CU's Band Day and traveled to Fort Collins to perform in CSU's Band Day. They received su- perior ratings at both Contests, With a record like this to build upon, next year's band should be even better! - 1.-was , or s -- -,Mr . l , Concert Band Who has the music for this piece? The concert band has attempted more difficult pieces this year than ever before, under the able direction ofChuck Cassio. They played three concerts, one more than in past years, one in February, one in April, and a pops concert in May. In addition to playing, the band attempted two money-making projects which were supported half-heartedly by the student body. They sold cushions and Big Mac tickets, trying to make enough money to buy new hats for next year. Despite lack of enthusi- asm from the school, the band is looking and sounding much better than in past years. I 85 Pep Band Pep Band means hernygerns forever. Wherever one finds BHS cheerleaders, one finds Pep Band. It is easy to recognize the Pep Band, because it is a very quiet and unobtrusive group. The only ways to distinguish Pep Band from the crowd are lj Pep Band members have been known to wear Christmas tree lights, roller skates, high wader pants, and other apparel such as that. 21 Pep Band members usually carry some type of musical instrument, and at times, cause a lot of sound to be brought from these said instruments. 35 Pep Band members make these sounds come from their instruments, at appropriate times, and cause the cheerleaders H'-N to commence dancing around and making strange movements. 4j Pep Band members have alot of spirit, and have gone so far as to make their own parade through the halls, playing Mickey Mouse. ,Arr -gi rv: ,sw iso... Q ' af f Q 86 Stage Band Stage Band met every morning during first period, as a regular class. Because of new direction, QMr. Cassio, along with guest con- ductorsj, the Stage Band experienced a new atmosphere, and some new styles of music and playing. Whereas the previous Stage Bands have concentrated on blues sounds, this year's Stage Band has ex- panded into popular and soft rock sounds, with a repertoire inclu- ding such songs as MacArthur Park and Light My Fire. They present ed a concert in February with Concert Band, which featured them in many moods and techniques of playing, and could please the tastes of almost any listener. ,..i ....., .- ML' M ..J .......s , , IJ The -.,.......,.. M Concert Choir Girls, Choir All the choirs at BHS are under the direction of Mr. Haley, and produce combined programs throughout the year. Perhaps the most beautiful and most inspirational of all these is the Christmas concert, held the last week before vacation. The power of all the voices is amazing, as evidenced in the standing ovation performance of 'AO Holy Night at the Christmas assembly for the school. Of course, seniors always remember the Spring Con- cert, held in the courtyard, which seems to represent all the nostalgia of the high school years, as well as hope for all the things ahead. Concert Choir, which is composed of the best vo- calists in the music department, and is entered only on audition, is mainly responsible for the production of the spring musical. Fiddler On the Roof was this year's show, enjoyed by students and the general pub- lic both. It is the story of the Russian Jewish commun- ity of Anatevka and its inhabitants, in particular, the milkman Tevye, and his attempts to find suitable hus- bands for three of his five daughters. The production, almost a classic, held its success as the choirs were met with perhaps their greatest challenge yet. Show choir and Madrigals is an off-shoot of Concert choir. They perform throughout the community all year, and participate in all combined concerts. The highly-trained girl's choir andjunior choir complete the picture, and provide an interesting balance to Con- cert Choir. Mixed X K X 1' Chorus j WX A -X. W ig, f 5 5 PSA 3,1 .. Madrigal singing was popular in the Renaissance era in Europe, and began as informal gatherings of friends and neighbors to enjoy music and each others' company. Most of the songs center on the joys and sorrows of love, or the glories of nature and songg all singing is a cappella, or without accompaniment, depending on the spontaneous andjoyous melodies which reflect each singer,s personal enjoyment of the music. .. Z 'Wf Once upon a time, some friends got together to share the experience of music. A man named Uncle Rico came and told the musicians that he would help them and be their director, and that is just what he did. The friends got together and began practicing, and soon some other people from a band, who played other instruments, joined with them, and together, all these people made concerts, one before Christmas, and one in the spring. But that is not the end of the story. You see, all those people continue to be friends, and keep on sharing all the things they think are beautiful, and they probably always will, long after orchestra is over and Uncle Rico is gone. Orchestra ,i,,, V p . c H c , . r , Chamber Orchestra Chamber Orchestra is a little brother of regular orchestra. QThere are only about twenty people in the group, and much of the music is baroquej. During the fall and spring, when the weather is nice, people in Chamber Orchestra, and anybody who wants to, hold FREAKS vs. STRAIGHTS football games between rehearsal times. Qevery other Fridayj The group holds informal concerts throughout the year, which have shown the versatility and ability of this newly-formed ensemble. fn H , A Z In I A' W Q.. -- f gy A sf? 3 57 QM ' fi -if ' ff' H , 'Z .,A.- an f ig ' il f ,,' 1 ' V M K Q A 1, ,6 ,, 4 Q ,H w I ' Q V 1 V i Y , is , if gg i VV ' 4 A, I 'D J fm If I Gb bww? Here you can see the happy students hreezing merrily through the lines, especially for their English classes, and the calm teachers cheerfully guiding the students in their decisions. Actually, this year's system does have many advantages over pre- vious attempts at easing the semi- annual registration headache, mostly because it allows students to plan a schedule to fit their needs and teacher preferences. wguy . Sophomore Lettermen: Scott August, Tim Coyle, Park Goodman, Lucin Hardy, Rob Link, Scott Miller, Mark Ward. Football Frustration is one way to express a 1-9 season. First, losing tri captain Barry Paddock as a result of ineligibility. Secondly, five seniors decided football was not their sport which dropped the varsity down to only seven seniors. Frank Buchanan, Todd Dutton and Wendell Hardy led a strong defense which was the stand out portion of the Panther team. Offense was not known in Boulder only putting a total of 70 points on the board all season while other teams to- talled 235 points. What offense there was, was led by the quarterbacks Mark Buchanan, and Dave Hindman and by the line, Tom Lutz, Jim Helgoth, Frank Buchanan and Wendell Hardy. This year's team was primarily a sophomore, ju- nior team. This will provide valuable experience which will benefit next year's team greatly. Exper- ience was acquired by many underclassmen in hopes to prepare them for future years. With this exper- ience these players should bring Boulder back to the top where it belongs. . ev , . . Senior i k,,,.,. .., Cub Initiation g-:iz What does it mean to go to a band day? For BHS March- ing Band members, being in a Band Day means a lot of things. It means Thursday night rehearsals on the field, and practicing for weeks before the big day. It means waking up early some Saturday morning to board a bus, and having to change into your uniform with a million other people. It means being ashamed when Boulder High only gets a 2 on its first maneuvering contest, and Fairview gets a 1, and all the Fairview kids Put you down. But it also means being together with other peo- ple, and marching down a shady street with autumn leaves falling all around, and being ecstatic at hearing that you finally got that superior rating in maneuvering. And when it is all over, and you return home so exhaust- ed and hungry, you are glad the pressure is off for awhile, but are glad you were part of something that happened with all those people and sounds and colors. ,ff Fi 1 N-4 li je Band Days I . iv' ,AA 130 Pie Eating Contest Inconsistancy, perhaps the greatest nemesis of all coaches, plagued coach John Lunn and his harriers all season long. Led by senior lettermen Bill Pappas, Paul Smith, and Wayne Pallas, Boulder ranked high in preseason polls. At times the Panther runners competed well, finishing a strong second to eventual state runnerup Arvada West at the Jeffco Invitational Meet in early October. Unfortunately, Boulder was unable to put it together two weeks later in the Centennial League Championships, finishing a dismal fifth. Pappas and Smith placed second and third respective- ly but failed to receive much support from the rest of the team. One week later the script ran the same as the Boulder team failed to qualify for the state meet. Pappas qualified individually, however, and eventually finished 19th, far off his usual form. Untimely injuries to Pallas and sophomore standout Todd Gutzmer proved costly, as did the lack of depth. Nevertheless, Lunn looks forward to the 1972 season. Although seniors Pappas, Smith, Pallas, Jim Graham, Terry Hill and Rob Hutchinson will not return, juniors Art Heafer and Graham Fowler, along with sophomores Gutzmer and Dave Bunnell will form a sound nucleus. Lunn will look to juniors Paul Beaty and Terry Maurer and sophomores Bill Platts, and Paul Shedlousky and Dave Mosley for support, but still lacks depth. Lunn heads one of the strongest and most respected distance running programs in the state, but unfortunately, because of its reputation, many potential standouts are afraid of doing che work involved. sv PY' .x N., 1 E' an' .:, 1 ,W r .1 QA, ,X 1 ' .-.P f '. 4. Meanwhile, the football team, a little over midway in its losing season was trying to put everything together for a win on Friday night. They succeeded in ,pulling ahead in the first half, and by the beginning of the gala halftime, Boulder fans were in pretty good spirits. Excitement mounted while the lively BHS Band performed its portion of the halftime show and everyone awaited the crowning of the queen. Finally, can- didates Paula Chulcoski, Laurel Haynie, Gwen Holloway, Bar- bie Reeves and Janet Zemeckis approached the stands with their escorts. Gwen Holloway, at the side of former Panther Mark Goulette, was crowned Queen for '71g then, everything was over, and the floats and glitter merged into the tension of the contest at hand on the field, and another Boulder High defeat. After much planning and hard work by val and crew, and girls wondering what to wear, and guys wondering if Burger King wouldn't be the best place to eat after all, Saturday night arrived. Moonshadow was the theme, and the music was fine for listeningg and in one way or another, nervous onies and senior sophisticates alike engaged in a most memorable evening. 142 5 E it V A l nf' ik ffs MQ' . More girls placed in state than ever before Qsevenj, including Marcia Wolfersperger, Sandy Drexel, Roby Rogers, Kathy Friend, and Lori Langorg and in general the team was stronger than ever. The season was early this year, in the fall instead of winter-spring, which may account for the lack of new sophomore blood on the team, as practice began in the summer, and ran well into the school year. Although these girls gave up many afternoons and weekends, the general spirit was high throughout the season, and nobody really seemed to mind the effort, because the final victory was really worth it. Girls, Gymnastics Propinquity Propinquity is a group of BHS alums Carla Sciaky, Mel Stonebraker, Pat Hubbard, and Julie Johnson who brought their music and good feelings to the school twice this year-at the beginning, and at Christmas. Singing to regular large crowds at Farmer every Sunday night, they have developed a fantastic repertoire and have a way of doing just the right song at the right time in the right way to put everybody in a really fine mood for days after, and that's just what they did. Emerging from a previous 7th place rating, BHS showed the league that they could put k together and execute a meaningful basketball organization. C Boulder proved that experience is not always the essen- tial ingredient of success. Hard work, determination, t self-discipline, and poise combined with young men willing to sacrifice and unite as one, brought the Pan- thers up from the bottom rung to a position that rat- tled the league leaders. Boulder made its Centennial League opponents sit up and take notice. af Consequently, the 1971-72 basketball team has much for which to be proud. They proved themselves, both 1 as a team, as individuals, and as young men. 1 Kent Smith .,.. , Varsity: Standing QL to RQ Len Hernandez, Paul Survis, Terry McClain, Mark McKean, Glen Gondrezick, Gordy Gon- drezick, Earl Duncan, Rod Sinner, Kneeling: Kent Smith, Bob Logan. -f we S 1, , ,, Q L L A--M M fr of . ff ,hL . 5 Q ' if , S tiff T ei e in r x 1 Q .1 , - ' at ,, hif i' iw ' 'fi' ...f - A i E in fx Man , , urs JUNIOR VARSITY: Alen Schulz, Mark Ward, Matt Maras, Lucien Hardy, Dave Rice, Scott Miller, Rob Link, Gene Goble, Rich Marlow, Les Wood. Their third new coach in three years brought his own.new philosophies and tactics to a basically inexperienced squad, and the success of the team seemed doubtful at the begin- ning of the season, however, under the leadership of Sal Gomez, Mark Heinly, Seiji Ishiguri, and Dave Witter, the team earned the pride of the school by the end of the season. -I.V.'s, following the trend of the Varsity squad, were looking bright with only one loss. The team is not under funding by the athletic department, and the members of the club had to pay for their ovsm equip- ment and' uniforms. This years' interscholastic competition was mainly against Fairview, although the team hopes that eventually hockey might become a league sport and receive funds as part of Boulder High athleticsg as for now, every- body just has a lot of fun, and enjoys playing in an easygoing type of atmosphere. First, it was postponed a week after the basketball team was to play in State Tournament so that students could attend the games, and then there was the problem with the script. It went something like this: first, a mousetrap theme was used to tie in with the title, 22 Catchesg later, a humorous script, to be a take-off on the movie, Catch 22, was Written, but that didn't Work out either . . . Vodvil finally took place the nights ofthe Fairview- BHS faculty game, and the night of the donkey game, which took some of the crowd, but that's how it goes . . . The acts? Well, see for yourself-they were pretty good. The Owl Staff? Mighty tuckered out! , ffm, , fm.. ,eff , --H?
