A year of newness and change ... of time steadily passing clock hands endlessly making circles on the face of a clock. . . . of As sophomores, juniors and seniors, the school vear of 1964-1965 has brought not only change in the physical structure of the school building, creating a modern study atmosphere, but also new ideas, new experiences and new challenges. The friends made, the courses taken, the athletic contests attended, the musical and dramatic productions performed, all have made Boulder High, 1964-1965 a step on the ladder of maturity, a step never to be returned to. The goal is always ahead. And if the step was weak, climb up with hope for the future. If it was firm, go forward with confidence, 1 our i - ■U .ijK-i- ' e v- ?- - ; t- ■vl X _-.. ri}L. id— LM - 38 c r. 20 ,184 Bonnie Fittie, Toni Berg, Mary Helen Carroll. . . A YEAR OF LEARNING . . . Mexico came to Boulder High participating in the third an- nual Tolucan student exchange. Under this program the Mexican students attend classes here during the winter and in turn Boulder sends students to study at the University ' of Toluca for the summer. Alonzo spent his third. Alba the second year at Boulder High. Ame Ludvigsen of Norway, and Tienchai Mahasirik of Thailand also attended BHS for their second years. Other foreign students were Everker Holm- berg from Sweden, Mauno Feanot of Fin- land, Charles Spinney from New Bruns nck. Canada, and Prudencia Daniels who came from Panama. New faces? — This year ' s sophomore class alone ap- proached 600. New practices? — Who will ever forget math class in good ole ' Central? And, new look? — Indeed, there was a new look to all of Boulder High, all of the school, that is, except the OWL room. A new teacher was all the high school ' s journalism de- partment received. Miss Susan E. Sayre served as journalism instructor and OWL advisor dur- ing the year, bringing, perhaps a bit of joy, much chagrin, and a new idea or two. She joined aspiring journal- ists, big and small, and a gig- Miss Susan Sayre OWL Adviser gling gaggle of Owlies. Chief of all Owls, Tom Wolzien, was joined at various times by assis- tant editors, Cassie Nelson, Joyce Hansen, Mary Jane Davies and Iris Connolly; news editors Iris Connolly, Anne San- doe, David Graham and Cassie Nelson; and feature editors Shari Brown, Nanci Quiggle, Monica Hoffman and Marc Schipper. Sports editors Steve Clark, Ron McGuckin, Bob Dugan and J. T. Garcia, and advertising managers Ann Willyard and Cici Gold. When the first semester pass- ed on (as all first semesters do), a group of worthy, young cub reporters joined the staff. Added to the ranks of the Owlies every- where were Sally Aspinwall, Paula Bernthal, Mary Helen Carroll, Kipp Downing, Janet Groft, Mary Hale, Frank Lister, Jack Ott, Stephanie Sears, Gary Warner and Anne Zier. The OWL staff ended the year, as always, with fond mem- ories, aspirations for the future and visions — of some new lino- leum tops, maybe, some new paint for the room, perhaps, and, above all, the hope that their newspaper could continue to be the Best Ever! OWL Editor Tom Wolzien Editor Unique Not since 1955-56 has there been anything but female OWL editors. So for almost a decade there have been dainty, sweet girls atop the high stool in room 254 — all of which seems to make Tom Wolzien something unique among OWL editors. He is a boy; he was the OWL editor. And, during the 1964- 65 school year, Woixien led his staff through all manner of activities, not the least of which included weekly publication of the high school newspaper, sponsorship of the gala, all- school talent exhibition, Vodvil, and numerous other projects. A whole gob of kudos is in order to Wolzien — truly unique among OWL editors. Lit Section Begins Favorable comments are still being heard, even today, regard- ing the inclusion of a literary section in three issues of the OWL during the past year. in an unprecedented action, the members of the OWL staff voted to include the sections and then, they accomplished all of the page layouts and arrang- ing of the various works. Members of Boulder High ' s English department who first came up with the idea of a liter- ary supplement to the news- paper were instrumental in en- couraging students to submit their creative works to the staff for inclusion in the sections. •cr m Jay Tea tries to convince Big I that he really does have to visit a sick friend. This year the Cubs followed tradition by attending all games, having pot-luck suppers in connection with some of the athletic events, making posters and banners, and helping with the B-Club candy sale. In the fall an initiation took place for the sophomore members, the annual Cub Dance was sponsored at mid year and the Cub recog- nition banquet was held in May. Adding to these traditions, u nder the in- itiation and leadership of Ginny Vielehr were a senior honorary program, and a new merit system with the use of punch cards. In a busy and prosperous year, the Cubs successfully achieved their purpose of raising high school spirits for athletic events. The pom-pon girls, junior, and senior varsity cheerleaders for 1964- ' 65 have maintained the high standard of excellence which has been established throughout pre- vious years. Due to a change in last year ' s constitu- tion, six varsity cheerleaders were elected instead of four. Head cheerleader Jill Coppom, Barbi Mack, and Sue Preston, all of whom were junior varsity cheerleaders, were joined this year by Alice Bayne. Cid Fightlin, and Kathy Stiles. All were elected by the student body in May of their junior year. At the same time the four junior varsity cheerleaders were elected. This year they were Nicci Edwards, Dianna Elliot, Sharon Moate, and head JV, Priscilla Bowdy. Their duties included assisting the varsit) cheer- leaders and leading cheers for the B and C squad games. The pom-pon girls were elected by the members of pep club. They were Sally Aspinwall. Susie Bennett, Mary Jane Davies, Pam Penfold, Ellen Craven, Nancy Hutchinson, Linda Redus and Ann Tooker as alternate. They added much to games and rallies by keeping time to the cheers with their colorful shakers and by partici- pating in halftime activities. In addition, the Bt)ulder High team members were hosts to the Japanese National Champions and wre stled before 4500 fans at the University of Colorado Fieldhouse. This was the largest crowd ever to watch a dual meet in the state of Colorado. The Boulder High team was led by six outstanding seniors: Gil Espinoza, last year ' s state champion at 95 lbs., had a 15-0 won lost record in duel meet competition this year; Conard Metcalf ' s 15-1 record was blemished only by a defeat at the hands of a member of the Japanese team; Dave Wergin 11-4; John Geandreau 9-1-3 (ties) ; Gary Pine 7-4-1; and Lew Dukes 7-4-1; helped to strengthen this very fine wrestling team.
