Sponsored by the American Legion, the purpose of the conference was to give boys from all over Colorado the experience in handling the prin- ciples and practices of government. The girls who attended Girls' State went to Colo- rado Womens' College in Denver June 21-27. The girls were required to write a letter of application and make a three minute speech on their reasons for wanting to attend Girls' State. The girls and boys were selected on the basis of leadership, character, courage, honesty, scholarship, cooperation and health. TRAVELCADE Far in advance of the exciting Travelcade trip, twenty-four students and their sponsors began making plans for the joumey to Wyandotte, Michigan. To raise most of the 32,800 needed to finance the trip, members worked on such proJects as the spaghetti dinner, skating party and dances. The group was also well versed on the history and attractions of Michigan and Colorado. Much credit goes to the sponsors, Miss Ruth Harrower and Mr. Charles Blubaugh, parents faculty committee and steering committee, composed of Jim Copeland and Judy Repplier, co-chairmang John Wittemyer, treasurer, Diane Maslin, recorderg and Nancy Bellitt. The group left Denver's Union Station for Wyandotte on April 6. They were entertained with sight -seeing tours, as well as attending classes and social events at the school. Each Boulder student stayed in his exchange partners' home for the week at Wyandotte. On the retum trip, the group took in the sights of Chicago. On April 17, the students arrived home and prepared to receive their exchange partners for a week beginning May 3. The Council, re- presenting the Junior Class, awarded the Sophornores the school colors for the last football game after the Juniors won the Roughhouse. Tom Sawyer , the famous American classic, was ably presented on November 15th by a Junior cast as the class play. December 15 was the date of the annual Junior Prom, the theme being New England Winter . The prom was very successful and will be remembered as one of the nicest dances at Boulder High. The halls were beautifully decorated for the Christmas season by the Jtmiors. The Trip Council served the Sen- iors at their annual Senior Breakfast and the Juniors ushered at Class Day and Graduation Exercises, June 6. A great deal of credit and thanks go to the Junior Class sponsors headed by Mrs. Ward. The other sponsors were: Miss Duhon, Mr. McCammon, Miss Mitchell, Mr. Einert, MI. It ex- panded its activities by dividing itself into special groups for electronics, chemistry and math, astronomy, biology, and geology. At the bi-weekly general meetings Science Club members heard many excellent speakers present interesting programs about every- thing from fossil pollen grains to recent atomic bomb tests. One of the year's activities included a trip to Denver to visit the airport, stockyards, and the Coca -Cola bottling company. In April many of the members of Science Club were active in the Regional Science Fair at the Bureau of Standards. Several of the special di- visions entered group projects also. Two members of Science Club won honorable mentions in the nationwide Westinghouse Science Talent Search. The gridders came within a whisker of going to the state playoffs and were held back only by a couple of wrong bounces in N 5 K in X ' , 'i the Longmont game. The three losses were a 7-6 toughie to Pueblo Centen- nial, a 19-12 loss to Longmont, and a 20-12 setback at the hands of Greeley. The Panther's best game was a 19-12 Homecoming victory over previously un- defeated Englewood, a team that wound up in the state AA finals. Guard Jack Olsen was named to the all-state team, and Olsen and back Ron Smith were picked on the A11-A merica high school team. Also leading the squad were cen- ter Dave Baker, tackle Dan Gonzales, end Gordon Thompson, and junior backs Bruce Keim and Clyde Gossert. This page is sponsored by CITY PLUMBING and HEATING 101 A. BASKETBALL As fam as this year's athletic activity was concemed the hard-luck squad was the basketball team. The round- ballers battled their way thru the toughest non-conference schedule in the state before they began to click. As the conference season began the Lefferdink crew got off to a good start and managed to stay solidly in the middle of the league despite the all-around talent and strength displayed in the Northern conference this year. One disastrous February weekend, which saw a 41-37 loss to Englewood and a 43-42 squeaker to Fort Collins, ruined BHS title hopes. The team was led by the shooting of seniors Gene Hoehne and Bob Bartelema and the aggressive back-court work of Gordon Thompson and Ron Smith. A potent group of juniors, including Bruce Keim, Jim Parsons, Jim Ly- man, and Bob Preston, will return next year to anchor a team which could well be a title contender. Coach Fred Iohnson's B-Squad was again one of the outstanding B-Squads in the state, with an impressive won- lost record. Top players for the B's were Rick Robertson, Jim Stokes, Mick Bigbee, Roland Rudosky and DonSmith This page sponsored by SMITH 'S KARMEI. The 1956-57 Panther wrestling squad, coached ably by Allen Pat- ten, had an outstanding season. The squad compiled an ll won and 4 lost record. The season-ending Longmont loss was especially hard to stomach for the Panther crew because it dropped BHS from a the- oretical three-way tie for the conference championship with loveland and Fort Collins. The grapplcrs then placed second in the conference meet and 8th in the state meet. The squad was led by Bill Loomis, 130 pounder, who won 20 straight matches before losing in the state meet, and two conference champs, Dave Eggleston at 137 lbs, and Dan Gonzales, heavyweight. Other Panthers in the state meet were Kent Swedlund, Tom Tisone, Clyde Gossert, and Dave Baker. Coach Lynn E1liot's B-squad had a 7 win l loss dual meet record and culminated a fine season by winning their own invitational toum- ament. Particularly outstanding triumphs included a tension packed, 2-1 win over Englewood, a 6-2 conquest of Longmont, a 3-0 edging of Ft. Morgan, and a 21-5 shellacking of Loveland. Outstanding play throughout the year came from Gene Cassidy, Ken Stancato, Jerry Hubbard Dave Wagoner and Bob Emerson, seniorsg Cap Sheperd, Jim Neher, Don Baxter and Gene Hoe- hne, juniorsg and Bruce Keim and Dave Carlson sophomores.
