Yet we can look back to our high school days and remember the elements which were combined there to start us toward a successful life. ln high school, as in life, each is on his own, with unlim- ited opportunities to complete the first step of the Formula for Success. Formula for Success has been chosen as the theme of the l948 Odar- oloc. As the Chief Scientists, the faculty experiments and works with the Elements, or students. Successful experiments result in New Discoveries, Radio-Active Compounds and Atomic Energy, representing the queens, the clubs and the sports respectively. Every Boulder high school student has at one time or another been influenced by the lives of these two, who were not only fine teachers, but also real friends. With great respect the l948 Odaroloc is dedicated to them. Headed by Jerry Wolny, the other officers-Chuck Gathers, Raymond Sword, Janice Carlson and Joanne Atanasofffeworked on such major problems as the junior prom, junior dues, Christmas decorations and the tradition- al cakes for the senior breakfast. Miss Kathryn Willis and Ed Swinscoe helped the hard working five and guided them over the rough spots. This year's junior class is proud to soy that they won The Rough- house, the annual event between the sophomore and junior classes. By winning this the juniors kept the Onies from wearing the school colors until later when Chuck Gathers presented them to the Toot King Larry Hopkins at the Sock Hop. This year's junior prom was a success also. The theme was Stardust and the council, with the help of the junior class, put on what was termed one of the most successful junior proms yet. Sharon Helm, head majorette, has twirled all three of her years in high school, succeeding Shirley Sue Jackson as head twirler this year. Peggy Piper, the other senior major- ette, took up strutting with the band in her junior year, while Darlene Deapen and Dolores Stockman, junior prancers, will be around next year. Sophomore Virginia Callen hails from Casey and has two more years to serve with the band. Ned Blackmarr completes the corps as the only male member and as drum major. Sponsored by Randall Spicer, the majorettes and drum major have com- pleted a successful year and have been a decided addition to the public appearance of the band. 0 0 Directed by Randall Spicer, the BHS band took part in many school and community activities during the l947-48 school year. The newest addition for the band was small cap lights donated by the Elks lodge. With the aid of the lights, many clever stunts were pre- sented at all home night football games. Music was also provided for rallies, basketball games and an assembly concert was presented each SSFYTCSTEF. Civic functions included the welcoming of Santa Claus and Miss Merry Christmas and Armistice and Memorial day parades. The Uni- versity of Colorado band day was also enjoyed by the musicians. This year the northern district of the Colorado State Music Festival was held in Boulder. About 25 schools sent bands, orchestras and choirs to the April I2-I3 classic. Featured were marching, group playing, solo competition and a street parade. As an additional honor the magazine, Musical America, Who's Who in American Bands, has mentioned the BHS band for the third straight year as one of the outstanding high school bands of the United States. From these choir organizations are formed the boys' and girls' ensemble groups. The vocal groups' activities are varied. Front row-Basil Allen, LeRoy Opdycke, Back row-Ed Swinscoe, Christian Recht, Merle Lefferdink, Paul Rose, Clyde Gelwick. 0 0 Boulder High's l947 edition of the Panther grid machine ended the season with an impressive won 5, lost 3 record after Wayne Williams, senior left half, openedithe sea- son on the first play from scrimmage with an auspicious 64-yard touchdown gallop. ln the rough Northern conference the Panthers lost two games and won three. Rousing defeats over Englewood, 20 to 0, over Greeley on homecoming, 2l to O, and over Longmont on Armistice day, l9 to 6, gave the Panthers third place in the final conference standings. The Panther Bees had a successful season under the tutelage of Ed Swinscoe. They won two and lost their last one, l3 to O, at Longmont. The future Panthers won over Greeley 7 to 6 and over Englewood l9 to 6. Basil Allen assisted Swinscoe in preparing the sophomores for years to come. N J B Squad Basketball Team-Left to right-Bill Forest, Orville Rose, Larry Hopkins, Allen Duane, Earl Cummings, John Becker, Duane Winslow, Raymond Shepherd, John Little, Don Switzer, Neil King and Coach LeRoy Opdycke. 0 0 Although their hopes for the i948 state high school basketball championship were shattered by Colorado Springs 34-27 in the opening round, the Panther Hoopmen completed a very successful season. The BHS basketballers retaliated from the loss to the Terrors to post victories over Brush, 56-47, and Pueblo Central, 54-33, thereby captur- ing the consolation title. ln addition to taking the state consolation title, the Boulder squad swept over all their league opposition to garner the Northern confer- ence crown with a perfect lO-O record, For a season's record the BHS squad possessed a very impressive l6 won and only three lost. Manual of Denver, West Denver and Colo- rado Springs were the only opponents during the entire season who posted wins over the Boulder five. To add to the numerous laurels already received, Lael DeMuth, lanky BHS center, dropped in l39 points in conference play to edge out Lou Koeppe of Greeley by one point for the Northern league scoring honor. For a season over-all record, the B squad won six and dropped ten. Most of the losses can be attributed to the fact that the Boulder team used sophomores for the greater part of their games, while their op- ponents employed juniors. However, in the season competition, two school records were shattered by two of the lettermen and the other has another year of eligibility. Boulder thinclads placed a strong third in the conference meet held in Greeley on May 7 after placing third in both the heavyweight and lightweight divisions at the Northern Colorado meet held the previous week. At the Colorado university relays Wally Tanner won the shot put, Bob Platts the 60-yd. high hurdles and the two-mile relay fin- ished second. Twelve men qualified for the state meet held at Folsom stadium on May l5.
